@MrGawain You would set this up once to your ideal setup and probably never do it again unless you wanted a different way for a specific game. And it would take seconds.
@KTT I don't think it's cheating, I just think there is two aspects to the gameplay, training and battling pokemon is one, and the other is finding and catching them. If the app tells you exactly where the Pokemon are, the finding and catching part is dead in the water. It's like if in the DS Pokemon RPGs, the Pokemon's sprites were visible in the long grass. You would just walk to the rare ones and walk around the rubbish ones, breaking the game.
I have had the game from day one and haven't used the footprint tracker at all (partly due to it not working of course) and I have over 100 Pokemon. If the tracker was working flawlessly and I used it every time I played, I would have caught them all in no time with virtually no effort. I think having to find them yourself adds a ton of playability, makes "the hunt" a fun part of the game, and makes a rare pokemon, (or any one you haven't caught) popping up a surprising moment, that feels just like in the old games when one would pop up in the grass, or even finding a rare trading card in a pack! It's a very exciting feeling that is intrinsic to Pokemon, and would be completely gone from the game if you knew where the Pokemon were, making it a generic collecting game.
It's also worth considering part of the reason they got rid of this feature may be trespassing. If you're stood by a wall, and it's telling you the Pokemon is on the other side, that could be construed as the game convincing you to jump over the wall. With people falling off cliffs and in front of trains while playing the game, Niantic will be trying to avoid any and all blame (rightly so). With the footprint tracker gone, it's your responsibility to look around with your own sense of logic, and if you trespass or jump in a lake, that's your own choice and not the games fault.
All of this is without even mentioning the server problems that come with the game having to check how many footprints away from the pokemon you are every time you move a few steps. Same with the third party apps, they are constantly checking the game servers for Pokemon movement and killing the servers for real human players.
I do appreciate some people prefer to be told exactly where to look, and I'm sympathetic that the game may be less fun for them now. But the footprint tracker, and even more so the third party apps, caused way too many problems to be considered feasible without a massive do over.
These third party apps didn't add to the game whatsoever and only hurt it. I've been a pokemon player since Red & Blue launched and I still much prefer walking around trying to find pokemon, and it's not like duplicates are a problem anyway, you need to catch and evolve them to level up. If I want a specific Pokemon I either raise the respective egg and hope I get it or look around and hope I get it, as it should be. If I could look exactly where it was, go there and catch it, I could fill the Pokedex in less than a week, making the entire "hunt" worthless.
this is a crazy experimental Japanese side game with the story not being a good part of it. Plus Pikachu TALKS!!! There is no way this can be a good movie....they could have just remade The First Movie with Mewtwo, or summarised the Indigo League into a dramatic trilogy. this is the worst move they could make. Hopefully someone else gets right to Pokemon CGI movies, would be a much better fit than LIVE ACTION DETECTIVE PIKACHU of all things.
What if it's a small health based tablet? Like a cheap smartphone without the phone capabilities but with a wristwatch. Could include a ton of health apps including Pokemon Go, other more serious ones like Nike Running, but have a social streetpass/Miitomo/new Animal Crossing game aspect to it too. As well as certain games from the NX handheld.
@memoryman3 Well "no incentive to do anything at this point" is simply an opinion, it's fine if you feel that way, plenty of others do too but you can't state it as fact. The incentive is to catch all the pokemon and train them up and take over the gyms. Either that's fun for you or it isn't but it's an incentive nonetheless. I don't think my opinion is absurd it's just different to yours which is ok. Millions of people are enjoying it and the servers have been flawless for at least 48 hours now. It will probably mess up again when they launch in a new country but it shows they're working on it.
@Megas here in the UK I see about 50/50! Even saw a group of 15-20 girls in there early 20s drinking in a field and they were all playing, not to mention a lot of Asian girls.
@Kiyata It literally is like a trailer in the sense the benefit of the game from Nintendo's point of view besides the microtransactions is to attract people to Nintendo hardware. So yeah you already answered your "WHY". I've been playing Pokemon since Red/Blue launch day 20 years ago and I have a ton of fun with this. If you're comparing them to the mainline games you are misunderstanding the game entirely, it isn't even the same genre.
@memoryman3 Mario & Sonic Rio is an awful game, and Pokemon has been running pretty much flawlessly for the past 24 hours. And is a better game. It's only been out just over a week too. This is from a Sonic fan since Sonic the Hedgehog.
@naut It's a fun game that's a completely new idea and implemented well. That's really all there is to it. Obviously there is issues but "garbage" is absurd, even if it's not to your taste you can't say it's not a good game. Each to their own though I guess.
I had this idea for years but I always imagined it as just having a hard drive and access to the eShop but only the NES games. This way having them built in is much better as long as the ones you want are on there! As someone who owns a NES, all the NES games on Animal Crossing Gamecube, a bunch of NES games on Wii and WiiU, I'm still definitely gonna buy this lmao.
I used to imagine one for each console too, a SNES HD, N64 HD etc, which is still possible and would be amazing.
A Game Boy would be an incredible one too! It would have to be a bit more expensive and better made than this...but imagine a 2016 game boy with a backlit HD screen, rechargeable battery and charger. If Pokemon was one of the games and it released this year, it would make millions off the Pokemon Go nostalgia. It could even come in OG Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance shells.
@avarisclari It seems logical but that would completely negate people playing in passenger seats, on buses and trains, etc, which would be much higher in number than the idiots playing while driving. The last thing they will want to do is make it so thousands of people are unable to play just because they're travelling, when they aren't even driving. I'd say public transport is one of the most popular places smartphone games are played. A warning about driving on the startup screen like the one about watching where you're going would make more sense. If they do that then Nintendo can't be responsible for anyone who ignores it and anyone who causes an accident is fully to blame, just as they would be for crashing while texting etc. That's all that matters from a business standpoint.
@OneBagTravel Yeah I hate it when Nintendo news websites post about the biggest Nintendo news in years too. -_- What else were you expecting to see here?
@KrakenSoup The entire point of the app is that it takes the exact amount of time you want it to! I have 2 jobs too and have assembled a decent team of Pokemon in under 5 minutes per day. You probably could have caught 2 pokemon in the time it took you to post that comment! I'm not saying it's for everyone obviously but you should definitely give it a chance!
@gatorboi352 of course it's ok to be weary, I never said otherwise. I'm weary myself after how bad the marketing on the wii u was, but that wasn't the debate, someone said they "don't know how" to market the NX. Considering they haven't announced what the console is and all marketing plans are still under wraps that's a crazy thing to say unless you're a Nintendo board member lmao. And I'm guessing they made that E3 decision because NX wasn't ready to be shown, if I'm right it was a smart decision, and doesn't reflect on their marketing of the console in any way.
Also not that it excuses anything, but breath of the wild was arguably the best Nintendo e3 showing since twilight princess, possibly the best from any company.
@XCWarrior You're right that they might not have had a surefire pitch ready but that just shows they are planning the marketing strictly and are very conscious of what they're putting out. Spending more time figuring out what the message is going to be is a good thing and the failure to do that was one of the biggest issues with the Wii U. They will begin to market it when they know exactly what it is and how they want to market it, I say again you can't comment on how well they're marketing it until that happens. And this is Nintendo, they may full well not be planning that March date anymore. Even if they do they still have more than enough time to show it to the world and begin advertising it. Rushing all of that just to get a jumbled message out at E3 would be the most idiotic thing they could do.
Plus you can't say the reason they didn't show it at E3 was simply because they were worried about VR and NEO. Nintendo isn't that one dimensional to make a massive decision on one factor like that, there are countless to take into account. The buzz from E3 is long gone so if that was true they would have shown something by now. It will be shown when it's ready, it's that simple. Until that happens, commenting on their marketing methods is nonsense.
@dew12333 Lmao that's true actually. It's the same thing they do before every console launch. I remember waiting for over a year to find out what the Revolution (Wii) was.
@gatorboi352 You think that's a silly assumption, but it isn't one to say they don't have a clue how to market NX, before they've announced the console or had any possible reason to market it? Once they start marketing it, you can freely say they don't know how, if you aren't happy with the marketing. Until then it's an utterly ridiculous thing to say.
@mordecai Maybe they're waiting for a time for it to be actually relevant? Marketing it now but saying you can't buy it until next year would be almost worthless...The only people that would pay attention are the die hard Nintendo fans that already know they're buying it.
@XCWarrior How do you know they don't know how to market the NX? Since they haven't even announced what it is yet or made any attempt at marketing it that's some pretty deep insider knowledge you have there.
Yes, I'm feeling this "Multiple systems" idea. What if "NX" was just a new platform, imagine an up to date eShop with proper account systems, a massive virtual console with most games from Nintendo and other consoles history, all the indie games from Wii U along with a ton of new ones, plus the NX's own games. A handheld and a console could then launch with access to this eShop meaning both systems have the same games, which would massively increase Nintendo's output since they wouldn't be working on handheld and home games at the same time. Games could benefit from the postitives of both console and handheld gaming, for example a new Fire Emblem could have the HD graphics and animations of a 2016 HD Fire Emblem but still be portable for those who have the handheld, Mario Galaxy 3D could be playable on both in HD etc.THEN the exciting part they could use that platform on anything they want. Want to release a lower cost, 2DS like handheld aimed at kids? Do it, and it will already have a massive launch line up for the games already released on NX. Want to release a higher powered version of the NX home console for hardcore gamers? Carry on! They could even do a retro console, like a NES HD with access to the virtual console side of the eShop. Connect all these together with one account system like iPhones do and you're onto a winner I think. The other benefit would be all these systems would add up together, each applying to their own target audience, to give the overall platform a pretty large userbase. Which would/could lead to third party support.
He was a great guy and I wish him well and thank him for his service, but I also hope this is the change needed for Nintendo to actually DO some Sales and Marketing
@Wexter @Plywoodstick @roboshort Thanks a lot. So it's basically a Persona game with a few Fire Emblem characters. Shame it didn't fit some FE style battles in there somewhere but it's still awesome. Fire Emblem Awakening and Persona 4 Golden are two of the best games I've played in recent years so this is a must buy for me. Still kinda disappointed about the subtitles though.
So many questions. Apologies for being a noob. Is this Shin Megami Tensei vs Fire Emblem? I remember that announced years ago but didn't hear anything else about it, especially a name change. What is Tokyo Mirage Sessions and why has the name changed? Or is this a different game?
I've played and loved Persona 4 Golden but don't know anything about Atlus or SMT outside of that game. Is this going to play like Persona but with Fire Emblem battles? That would be so incredible. The walking part of this video is definitely reminiscent of the Persona 4 dungeon gameplay but the battles seem 100% Fire Emblem. Tbh this is a must buy for me no matter the answer to these questions, I'm very disappointed it's only subtitled though, considering how incredible the P4G voice acting is.
@kurtasbestos I know, it's so annoying. Even if this is a meaningless rumour it's still fun to discuss and brings up possible ideas. This is a Nintendo news site and there isn't any other Nintendo news today, what do people want them to do?
Ideally the handheld and the home console should be separate but have identical power and games library. So you purchase a game on the home console online store and can download it to the handheld too with gorgeous Vita style HD dual analog gameplay, and even share saves. This would essentially double Nintendo's output as they wouldn't have to focus on making games for two systems. Same with Virtual Console releases.
It would also be a huge attraction for third parties as anything they would develop would sell on two fronts. Since the handheld would be the only dedicated games handheld at the time and have full console games it would do pretty well I think. Which would mean it wouldn't matter if their home console didn't do great at the start. But with third party developers happy to release games to it due to the handhelds success, it probably would eventually do pretty well.
They could still connect to each other for second screen gameplay and even Wii U back compatibility. This idea would be both, two separate systems but still a "unified platform" in the sense of the development environment and eShop being one and the same.
@Rin-go You're acting like everyone is attacking him for this. People are saying they didn't like Star Fox Zero, that's it. It doesn't change the fact he's one of the best game creators of all time and a creative genius. No one is flawless.
@Captain_Toad Not really. It's virtually guaranteed to suck but if it can make a nice profit and convince a ton of kids to download the games then it's a success from Rovio's point of view.
That's a terrible idea. If anything the handheld should be a full handheld console itself, capable of sharing the NX library but downloading/playing the games itself with it's own processor etc. At least then it would be playable without internet connection. If this happens it will be a handheld that you take with you yet is useless unless you're near a wifi hotspot, which wouldn't be worth taking out with you at all. I can't see Nintendo putting a sim card in it to allow you online play everywhere.
Not censoring anything was genius. Every time I log in I get friends visiting me saying the most outrageous stuff they can think of, and it makes me laugh every time to see a Mii saying it. Hope this is a sign of a more "open" Nintendo
@Yasume Within 24 hours after being released in the West? That was an absurd expectation. Wouldn't be surprised if it hits it in the next week or two though.
Dunno if this has already been mentioned as I didn't get chance to read all the comments, but what's on the screen isn't "scruffy and random" it's a close up of this from the Unreal demo: http://i.imgur.com/IFQjguB.png
I hope they release a "My Nintendo" app with access to the eShop and remote downloads, Friend List and messaging, Nintendo news, links to new Nintendo smartphone games/apps, access to your "My Nintendo" points and the incentive store etc. Seems like a no brainer and much more attractive for adult/serious gamers than this Miitomo, but given Nintendo's fear of messaging apps I fear it's not likely.
@GoldenGamer88 I hope so. That could mean NX could launch with a huge selection of indie games and maybe even some Wii U retail games. Plus if you could do a system transfer, you could use your whole Wii U purchased library on NX instantly. Maybe even your Wii Shop games too from Wii mode? If they do that and continue adding to NX VC and continue their good relationship with indies, the NX game catalogue could be pretty huge pretty fast which it desperately needs to be honest.
@Plainsville Yeah but that's all anyway had any business expecting it to be. If you like Minecraft and Telltale Games/story based games it's impossible not to like this. If you don't like one or both of those and bought it, well that's your fault. (Not aiming this at you obviously).
@mjc0961 at least your comment had reasoning though. Now you put it like that I see what you mean actually, even though I don't quite agree as this was interesting to me. His comment was a drive-by insult with nothing worthwhile to say though lol.
@Minotaurgamer Quite a lot of people. Why do you have time to read articles you don't care about and post meaningless comments should be the real question.
On topic I always kind of knew this could be the case, but to be honest I do still believe around the time I was playing the game daily, that I felt a bit sharper and had improved concentration. Not evidence by a long shot but even doing a page of sums every day would help keep your mind active so I do believe this helped somewhat.
What's the USB keyboard for? I've never heard of the other console versions using one and I can't see any benefit to it , unless it's just for text chat? But even then it would be just as good with a keyboard on the gamepad.
Sigh, all the worthwhile ones are Japan only, as usual. Unless the eShop for NX becomes the same for every country or at least more fair, I won't bother buying one.
Control wise this makes perfect sense and I wouldn't be surprised. But performance wise I'm worried tbh. The game struggles on even the most powerful pcs as your vehicles get more complex. I hope they do some MAJOR optimisation, otherwise the wii u version may very well only be playable for the first half.

Re: Video: New Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Story Trailer Sets the Scene Rather Nicely
Re: Talking Point: The Online Reaction to Teddy Together Shows Why Nintendo Needs To Target Kids More Directly
@arnoldlayne83 Never. That market is oversaturated, they have no possible reason to want to.
Re: Random: Japanese Gamers Decide Which Starter Pokémon Is The Most "Seriously Useless"
Chikorita, one of the best Pokemon of all time number 1??
Bulbasaur, the FACTUAL, UNDENIABLE NUMBER ONE BEST POKEMON OF ALL TIME AT NUMBER THREE??
I will kill someone today
Re: Poll: Do You Want The Rumoured 'MH' Next Generation Portable to be Separate from NX?
@kurtasbestos I know, it's so annoying. Even if this is a meaningless rumour it's still fun to discuss and brings up possible ideas. This is a Nintendo news site and there isn't any other Nintendo news today, what do people want them to do?
Re: Poll: Do You Want The Rumoured 'MH' Next Generation Portable to be Separate from NX?
Re: Third Party Developers Share Their Hopes For Nintendo NX
@Neon_Blues Because nobody would have bought them
Re: Nintendo Publishes Part Two of the Miyamoto and Hayashi Star Fox Zero Interview
@Rin-go You're acting like everyone is attacking him for this. People are saying they didn't like Star Fox Zero, that's it. It doesn't change the fact he's one of the best game creators of all time and a creative genius. No one is flawless.
Re: Nintendo Publishes Part Two of the Miyamoto and Hayashi Star Fox Zero Interview
@rushiosan Actually your comment was the childish one. What he said was his opinion, and as a lifelong Nintendo fan who idolizes Miyamoto, I agree
Re: Nintendo Defeats Yet Another Patent Claim Against the Wii Remote
@Gerbwmu Yeah but it wasn't and they would have known that. The chance of winning was always zero.
Re: Editorial: Nintendo Should Shamelessly Exploit Its IPs to the Full
@Captain_Toad Not really. It's virtually guaranteed to suck but if it can make a nice profit and convince a ton of kids to download the games then it's a success from Rovio's point of view.
Re: Rumour: More Sources Highlight NX Controller 'Gimmick' and a Major Game Project
Re: Editorial: Miitomo is Surprisingly Strange and Compelling
Not censoring anything was genius. Every time I log in I get friends visiting me saying the most outrageous stuff they can think of, and it makes me laugh every time to see a Mii saying it. Hope this is a sign of a more "open" Nintendo
Re: Miitomo Tops iOS Chart in the US and Hits Three Million Global Downloads
@Yasume Within 24 hours after being released in the West? That was an absurd expectation. Wouldn't be surprised if it hits it in the next week or two though.
Re: Rumour Buster: Let's Have A Good Look At That "Leaked" NX Controller
Dunno if this has already been mentioned as I didn't get chance to read all the comments, but what's on the screen isn't "scruffy and random" it's a close up of this from the Unreal demo:

Re: Rhapsody is Now Available on the Wii U
@SanderEvers Same, it's the best streaming service by far. Unfortunately Apple want you to buy an Apple TV so would never do that :
Re: Reminder: Mythical Pokémon Celebi Is Now Available to Download in Current-Gen Games
Why is it level 100? 80% of the fun of these games is raising pokemon to make them unique. A level 5 would be way more interesting to me.
Re: Miitomo to Include Photo Mode and Pre-Registration Will Bring 'Platinum' My Nintendo Point
Re: More Details Emerge on the Launch of My Nintendo
@GoldenGamer88 I hope so. That could mean NX could launch with a huge selection of indie games and maybe even some Wii U retail games. Plus if you could do a system transfer, you could use your whole Wii U purchased library on NX instantly. Maybe even your Wii Shop games too from Wii mode? If they do that and continue adding to NX VC and continue their good relationship with indies, the NX game catalogue could be pretty huge pretty fast which it desperately needs to be honest.
Re: Review: Minecraft: Story Mode - Episode 1: The Order of the Stone (Wii U eShop)
@Plainsville Yeah but that's all anyway had any business expecting it to be. If you like Minecraft and Telltale Games/story based games it's impossible not to like this. If you don't like one or both of those and bought it, well that's your fault. (Not aiming this at you obviously).
Re: Catalis Group Acquires Curve Digital To Create "Major New British Games Publisher"
@Moon This was a strategic decision by Curve and can only be a good thing for them.
Re: 'Brain Training' Games Aren't All They're Cracked Up to be
@mjc0961 at least your comment had reasoning though. Now you put it like that I see what you mean actually, even though I don't quite agree as this was interesting to me. His comment was a drive-by insult with nothing worthwhile to say though lol.
Re: 'Brain Training' Games Aren't All They're Cracked Up to be
@Minotaurgamer Quite a lot of people.
Re: Minecraft: Wii U Edition Will Support the Wii U Pro Controller, Voice Chat, and USB Keyboards
What's the USB keyboard for? I've never heard of the other console versions using one and I can't see any benefit to it , unless it's just for text chat? But even then it would be just as good with a keyboard on the gamepad.
Re: Nintendo of Europe Launches Its Cyber Deals Weekend With Four Major eShop Discounts
@The_BAAD_Man Why would you want that when it could only be more expensive and slower than a regular one.
Re: Rumour: A List of Unreleased Titles for the eShop and Virtual Console Just Leaked
Sigh, all the worthwhile ones are Japan only, as usual. Unless the eShop for NX becomes the same for every country or at least more fair, I won't bother buying one.
Re: Nintendo: Wii U Version Of Kerbal Space Program Is The “Definitive Version”
Control wise this makes perfect sense and I wouldn't be surprised. But performance wise I'm worried tbh. The game struggles on even the most powerful pcs as your vehicles get more complex. I hope they do some MAJOR optimisation, otherwise the wii u version may very well only be playable for the first half.
