Re: Hardware Review: Nintendo Switch 2 - A Faster, Slicker, Sexier Switch

PorllM

@WiiWouldLikeToPlay Why do I keep seeing comments like this about the price?

Not calling you out personally, but it's being discussed a LOT

It's £395.99 in the UK, Switch 1 launched at £280 in 2017!

Given that we have almost a decade of prices rising across the board since then, it's really not a high price at all.

Re: Tag Heuer Reveals Two Mario Kart Watches, One Of Which Costs $25,600

PorllM

@Shambo Not sure if you're aware of this but watches only go up in price, especially those that are made in limited quantities.

IF you bought the 25k one and kept it in perfect condition, you could probably sell it for 35k+ in 5-10 years. Significantly more if not many others are available for sale at that point. That's why people buy such things. It's more an investment than vanity, unless you're so rich that you just wear it all the time and let it get worn down, which I agree would be stupid (but outside of billionaires, generally doesn't happen).

Now, obviously that's a major issue with capitalism itself that it works this way when people are starving. But to answer your original question of "why buy it just to be tied to a clock", nobody who would buy this would actually be looking at it.

Re: Mini Metro Copycat Game Has Been Removed From Switch eShop

PorllM

@abdias Not a relevant comparison. Those games you mentioned are the same genre as Smash Bros and Mario Kart and clearly take a lot of influence from them but they have their own characters, art style and unique features to make them a unique game.

This was literally the exact same game with nothing new added.

Re: Masahiro Sakurai Is Almost Out Of Smash Ultimate Screenshots

PorllM

@dew12333 Well he's obviously saved all of these in a folder and is posting them one per day. It's more likely to be an assistant than him directly, too. This takes, what, 30 seconds? Absolute maximum.

It couldn't possibly get in the way of him making games, but you know that

Re: UK Government Warns It "Will Not Hesitate To Consider Legislation" Against Loot Boxes

PorllM

@Tempestryke kids what young? No age has been mentioned. The kid could be 3 or 17. Also that doesn’t solve the issue at all anyway. These games are designed to be addictive for everyone including adults, it’s not a child specific issue. Yes you can say in that case it’s the adults fault and they should be careful what they spend, but you can say that for gambling and drug addiction too. The fact is no game developer should be allowed to release a piece of software that is specifically designed to be an addictive “press button to pay more money” machine that offers no actual content or value beyond that, or the content is only designed around that. That’s not comparable to DLC or selling content for games, it exists only to manipulate and drain the wallets of those who are vulnerable to it.

It’s like saying “your kids bought drugs? That’s your fault why did you let them talk to a dealer?” Well yes that’s a major factor and you need to be more careful, nobody should downplay that but we need to go to after the dealer who’s actually victimising people too or it’ll keep happening

Re: OddWorld: Soulstorm - Oddtimized Edition Announced For Switch

PorllM

@jojobar Typically I'm on your side of this type of argument and don't mind for example games being added to PS+Premium that have been monthly games before - but the answer is yes. Value and perceived value are based on supply, demand, availability and perceived availability more than anything else, so more people receiving a game for free or discounted absolutely does dramatically reduce the value.

Re: UK Government Warns It "Will Not Hesitate To Consider Legislation" Against Loot Boxes

PorllM

@Shade_Koopa You could make the same argument for kids buying drugs off a dodgy guy in an alley. Yes it's the parent's responsibility first, and no they shouldn't take their kids near the drug dealer or leave them in the alley unintended. But do we need to leave the guy there in the alley selling his wares? Why is it necessary to make it one or the other when tackling both can be fairly trivial?

Re: UK Government Warns It "Will Not Hesitate To Consider Legislation" Against Loot Boxes

PorllM

@dkxcalibur This is a really poorly thought out viewpoint. Yes it's the parents job first and that should be the priority but why are we allowing companies to create software specifically designed to manipulate children into rinsing their parents bank accounts? If they were selling something of value it wouldn't be a problem.

Also you say "waste time and resources" but the government is discussing all relevant topics 24/7, it takes close to nothing for them to go "yeah ban that"

Re: UK Government Warns It "Will Not Hesitate To Consider Legislation" Against Loot Boxes

PorllM

@VancouverVelocityFan That's not comparable at all. If your child says they want a book and you say no, you just don't take them to the book shop, or don't give them card details to buy one online.

With game microtransactions, they don't need any card details and they don't need to go anywhere. They just tap a button in a game they're playing (usually one very specifically designed to be tempting for kids) and it's done.

Not to mention, most of the cases of accidental overspending with microtransactions have been by toddlers too young to even understand the concept of buying something.

Re: Rumour: Potential Screenshots From A New "Finished" Fire Emblem Surface Online

PorllM

It's pretty annoying that this has potentially been finished a year.

I know game companies do that often, and especially Nintendo.

I know it's a strategic choice to not let games cannibalise each other, and ensure they're launched at the right time.

But really that should be a privilege you have when launching a lot of first party games. There has been barely anything from Nintendo this year, and this being released was sorely needed.

It's typically hardcore gamers who enjoy bigger, meatier titles who complain about switch releases because things like Mario Strikers can't keep them busy for long. Well, this is the exact game that could have kept those people happy for a while.

Re: Rockstar Has Released Its First Update For The Grand Theft Auto Trilogy

PorllM

@RasandeRose Not what he meant lol. If you tell your investors you have a big release in a certain quarter, and they're expecting that income, neglecting to release it will lose you a ***** ton of money.

Delaying is the right thing to do for the consumer, but very few gaming companies care about that and Rockstar arguably least of all

They would rather have their money up front and fix or "fix" later, and if the consumer doesn't like that, well stuff them as far as the suits are concerned

Re: There's Still One Way To Get Super Mario 3D All-Stars' Digital Version After 31st March

PorllM

@EVIL-C Dude it literally is a fan blog. It started out as a few guys posting articles and became pretty popular and monetized but it still has the same core team and is a very small company. I know your point was not to expect high quality journalism from them so I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you or anything but anybody who's looking for that here has major issues. To be honest, gaming isn't a serious topic period.

Re: Review: Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise - A Fun Game, In Disguise

PorllM

@halljames In all honesty, this review has undersold how much the bad performance was not a downside in the original game at all.

It added to the atmosphere if anything.

Maybe this one isn't the same, but if it is then the performance is a non factor and shouldn't have been discussed in this review so much.

It's quite literally the only game series in the world you can say that for, and that's what makes it so brilliant

Re: UK Charts: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Soars To Number One As Nintendo Takes Six Of The Top Ten

PorllM

@LavaTwilight It'll happen on the next console regardless of whether it continues to sell as it has or suddenly dies out.

To release a MK this late in the life of a console that already has one would be an idiotic move from a business perspective unless they were launching it on the new console at the same time BOTW-style (or making Switch 2 play Switch games natively like GBC)

Re: Why Does Nintendo Use Friend Codes Instead Of Screen Names? Leaked Documents Reveal All

PorllM

Makes perfect sense and has been proven to be better in cases like AC:NH. The current friend codes aren't anywhere near as awkward as the old ones either and adding friends is about as quick and easy as can be.

I'm willing to bet people complaining about this are comparing it to consoles targeting a very different audience and are a little out of touch with who the majority of Nintendo players are
