@Aurumonado Because they enjoy it? Other opinions than yours do exist you know.
I've never watched this guys videos or any Let's Player, but after 100s of hours building a Minecraft city with my flatmate, we had to go online and look at some videos of other people's creations. It gives the game more of a community and makes building things more worthwhile, as well as teaching people to play the game and giving inspiration for builds.
I could say why do people post worthless negative comments if they have nothing to actually contribute but I appreciate people are different and let people enjoy what they enjoy, you should try it.
@SharkAttackU Sorry I think I wasn't clear, I wasn't suggesting for a second that a system this generation couldn't sell more than one last generation. In fact with PS4's runaway success and Switch's early movement I think that's guaranteed.
What I meant was in regards to a company having a home system and a handheld at the same time and do incredible numbers with both, like what happened with Wii and DS.
Sony tried recently and the Vita died but the PS4 lived, Nintendo tried recently and the Wii U died and the 3DS lived. Sony adapted to this by killing the Vita, Nintendo adapted by combining both into the Switch (and killing the Wii U, although of course that had it's own problems).
It's just too much of a massive constraint on resources to keep providing games for both at once. I think Wii & DS only managed it because 1: motion controls were new and shocking to people 2: phone gaming wasn't a thing yet making the DS much more viable and 3: the majority of Nintendo games at that time were very low budget and low resources, e.g. Wii Sports and Brain Training.
For Nintendo to keep being successful and create a worthwhile library in 2017, the end of the "two punch strategy" and combining all their software into one system was a no brainer and a necessity, in my opinion.
I think the only way Sony will ever have a successful handheld again is if it was a handheld PS4 with the exact same games library.
if you think about it the Vita did ok at first but had almost no first party games. Once the PS4 really kicked off this became absolute zero, because frankly, the PS4 was selling so well they would have been idiots wasting time developing Vita games. This is why switch is such a great idea, you develop one game and have it as a handheld or home experience, whichever the customer wants at any given time.
"For some this prompts concern, mainly that Nintendo can't duplicate the raw sales numbers enjoyed in the peak of the two system strategy, such as in the lucrative DS and Wii generation."
Those people need to wake up and look at 2017, there is zero chance of that happening again, by any of the big 3. The switch was a genius idea in the long run.
@ballistic90 I didn't read his entire statement, I was just responding to this article, in which the word promote doesn't appear whatsoever (in quotes anyway, it is used once by NL). If you're responding to the whole statement then I apologise. The quotes in this article refer to quality control and hardware, there is no mention of promotion.
@ballistic90 That's very obviously not what he was saying. Sony & Microsoft didn't market Oddworld for them, but they certainly work with third party devs to give them the support and advice they need to make it as easy and smooth as possible to bring their games over, and try to make their development environment friendly. Nintendo show very few signs of caring about that. It's not about marketing.
@PigmaskFan what do you mean by that? I know when AM2R launched, that has no relation to anything in my post nor did i suggest otherwise. If you mean they should have allowed it to continue just because it wasn't brand new, that's not how reality works, it was still a competing product using Nintendo's IP.
Can't believe people in the comment section are still not getting this? Yes AM2R was free and yes the devs were making zero money from it. Yes that is also entirely irrelevant. It would have been C&D'd day one if they were making money, but even when they aren't it's a direct competitor to Samus Returns which is what Reggie means when he says it's a commercial product. If you were a game developer releasing a version of Metroid 2 with better graphics tomorrow, would you be happy with a free version of the same thing being available to anyone who wanted it ? Of course not as it would obliterate your sales. Some people would still buy your game, most would not bother.
A free product will always do extremely well against a priced one, regardless of quality level or which one is considered "real". When that free competition is using your copyright, you would be a blind idiot to not issue a cease and desist.
@MisterKorman I don't have a source to hand so don't take this as gospel but I heard DeNa were involved in the new Nintendo account system and also since they had been hired by Nintendo to create their phone games and apps, I assumed they had a big part of the chat system being an app.
Makes sense to me because I feel like Nintendo don't like spending a lot of time and money programming things that aren't games, so letting them take care of it would be a big load of their plate, if I'm making sense at all
@MisterKorman I agree with that! one occurs many many times more often than the other though. Not saying it wouldn't be nice as an option. Just that I understand why it wasn't a priority for Nintendo. The simple UI of the switch shows they'd rather spend time on games when it came to getting switch to launch, and handing the chat off to DeNa is surely part of that. Could happen one day.
@brutalpanda is that why next to nobody is ever talking on headsets online on PS4 and Xbox One? Teamwork chat is a great idea but the vast majority of gamers don't want to use it
Does anyone actually use online chat anymore? PC gamers for complicated tactical MMOs do I'm sure, but I can't think of many Nintendo games that would benefit from it enough to be worth Nintendo programming an internal system. Outsourcing it to a DeNA phone app saves time money and makes sure the 15 people who want to chat on Switch still have a way of doing it.
That's without going into Nintendo being terrified of voice chat directly through the console because of the children/potential bad language etc, so I think this choice makes sense in all honesty.
You could argue Splatoon 2 would benefit from voice chat but there aren't many others if any, and Splatoon 2 needs to be suitable for children so voice chat probably wouldn't be allowed anyway.
Console voice chat has been obsolete since Discord came out tbh.
Also there is this comment by Wolfgabe below:
"Remember people Reggie said this is just ONE solution not the only one"
But anything to panic over nothing am I right guys?
Disappointingly ignorant quote for an industry figure. The PS4 is just a PS3 with better graphics and the same for PS3-PS2. Xbox haven't really changed anything in 2 generations either. I've never heard of a portable and home console in one with traditional twin stick control, motion control, pointer control, touch screen and full controller support all in one tiny little tablet though.
If the Switch isn't surprising to him the rest of the gaming industry must be sleep inducing.
@LiberatedAnimal I suppose you're right, interesting how they're all Japanese. Maybe it's a culture thing. I would agree those companies are among the least buggy third parties but I still wouldn't say they are on the level of Nintendo. A bug in a Nintendo game is so unexpected it is almost guaranteed to make news. Square Enix, even on FFXV one of the best looking games ever, have the type of frame rate issues that have never occurred in a Nintendo game.
@retro_player_22 yes but organising the digital access and the eshop is less than 1% of the work. You couldn't simply Port the Wii U eshop version of super Mario Galaxy to the switch for example, it would be emulated in a completely new way and likely take months
Reggie has always been known as the king of spin but I feel like you're being a little harsh here.
"So where are these third party games?"
Literally everywhere? Nothing on the level of Xbox or PS but we would be idiots to expect that, it's not Nintendo's market or priority. Despite that we have a custom FIFA, Skyrim, Minecraft, Rocket League. Those are 4 of the biggest third party games of all time and the last two are cross play with Xbox. There are way more, Payday, NBA, tons of Japanese games etc. Once again not on the level of other platform holders but far more than would ever logically have been expected of Nintendo.
"Right, because Star Fox Zero is perfection. But let's bring in Miyamoto when talking about that steaming pile."
Yes Starfox is a bad game but mainly because of the controls, the actual level design and combat is incredible. Miyamoto holds the sole blame for this as he is simply not the same as he used to be. Unfortunately nobody in Nintendo is qualified to tell him what to do, or to launch a game before he's done. You can't deny Nintendo in general though have the highest level of polish and quality assurance in the industry. Only Rockstar come close and even they aren't that close.
Don't forget Reggie is a salesman, spinning things is literally why they pay him.
I actually think that last quote is the ideal situation for Miyamoto. Hand the main dev teams over to younger people with new ideas like what happened with Splatoon. Give him a small team to work on smaller more creative things. It is obvious he can't handle AAA games anymore and that's ok.
@retro_player_22 Every single one of those games would require work to run on switch. Wii and Wii U had similar architecture to each other and Switch is completely new. What you're talking about would probably take 2-3 years.
This is so dumb! Nintendo specifically designed the console with the same buttons in handheld or console mode, and pointer controls in console mode to cover touch screen inputs from handheld mode. It's a complete non issue if they put 5 mins thought into it.
@olrodlegacy The chances of Nintendo funding this are pretty much zero. Either Activision decide it's worth it, or they don't. If Nintendo were to fund some 3rd party games there are about 300 that would be higher priority than the new CoD.
@olrodlegacy "letting them get away with it"?! What do you mean letting them get away with it? It's Activision's game and if they don't think it's worth doing they aren't going to do it, Nintendo have no say in the matter, unless they're willing to pay the development costs.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE They released Assassins Creed for Wii U, great port too. Nobody bought it. Also all the AC games play identically and control terribly so don't feel like you're missing anything. I would have liked Skull & Bones on Switch though, I'll give you that.
Anyone saying W102 needs to adjust their expectations. W101 sold awfully and there is no possibility of Nintendo or Platinum ever taking that risk. If Nintendo is paying for a new exclusive I'd say it's either Bayonetta 3, or another sequel in a similar vein e.g. Vanquish 2.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if it's a multiplat based on an IP similar to what they did with Transformers.
If it's Bayonetta 3 I hope they port 1 & 2 to switch too. That would be an incredible box set to buy.
@Krillin Given the fact EA gave up on Nintendo last gen and have NEVER put extra effort into any different version of anything, that's extremely unlikely. I'd love to believe it and if they do what you say I will cheer and buy it but they have a history of half assed ports on lower selling platforms, this is the norm.
Back to the same Wii U/Vita cycle.
1: EA tests the waters by releasing a half assed Fifa game.
2: It sells terribly because it's half the game the other versions are
3: EA pull all Switch support because their almost zero effort experiment failed
4: The millions of casual gamers who only buy FIFA and GTA for console see one incomplete Fifa game and no other EA games for Switch, slate it to each other constantly. In Europe and South America where FIFA is consistently the biggest selling series, this is a near guaranteed death blow. US is a bit more secure.
5: Switch sales drop off except for Nintendo and indie fans.
I really hope I'm wrong, obviously, but that's how the gaming market looks these days, in Europe at least, and Wii U and Vita have proved this exact sequence of events twice.
"gameplay will surely need some adaptation, but that is a good opportunity to rethink the driving experience."
I swear some devs get put off by this idea that they need to create motion controls and stuff. A realistic rally game should not be played with motion controls. If they wanted to bring it to Switch with some differences then cool but there is no possible reason they would NEED to, just give us a straight port and as long as it runs ok I would love it.
@Anti-Matter In the trash where it belongs hopefully. With that said the "SNES-style" sounds like it's in regards to the nostalgic style of the game and doesn't necessarily suggest it will be 2D visuals.
@Equinox I wouldn't call one of the most successful games ever niche. The "niche audience" you're talking about is anybody that enjoys creativity, since it's literally the closest video gaming has ever come to unlimited content, and the easiest building game to get to grips with. To try to explain it to you, me and my flatmate have our own single player games and online games we play our way through independently. But every now and then we chill and have a smoke and play minecraft together for an hour. We have been doing this for months when we both get free time at the same time and have essentially built our own city with working rail networks, labelled and organised mines right down to the bedrock etc. Every now and then we climb a mountain and look at what we've achieved, "there's my tower", "your house looks crazy in the sunset", "those roads with the torches look amazing in the nighttime", "do you think we could connect up to that mountain?" etc. It's not for everyone due to the lack of storyline and end goal but as relaxing and satisfying gameplay loops go, there has never been a better game.
That's completely independent of the survival gameplay and the mining, which are both addictive in themselves.
Also suggesting a game with a colourful art style is only for kids is pretty sad, and definitely not what you'd expect from a reader of a Nintendo site. The game is vastly more "mature" than Call of Duty and the likes, in terms of gameplay possibilities.
@JTMnM @Freek Have you guys tried playing it? It's not really something that can be explained to you, you have to experience it, ideally with other people locally, which is partly why it's such a great fit for the Switch.
@PanurgeJr Oh I'm well aware. But this particular comment you replied to was a pun and a great one, as opposed to a complaint. Not denying he does those too but this isn't really the place to talk about that.
I'd be really interested to see what's in these locations in the PS4 and Xbox One versions, does anyone know? Like do the green cannons fire regular cannon balls, or do nothing? Does the cheep cheep minigame give you a generic fish?
EDIT: Sorry wrote this before I saw the comments above
@roy130390 Nah. Some things age better than others, that's undeniable, and is due to a lot more factors than just nostalgia.
Specifically regarding my Star Wars example, the original trilogy used physical models and the prequels used CGI. This was very simplistic CGI when it was first becoming popular and some scenes nowadays look like PS2 cutscenes (for example the hilariously bad shots of the Clone troopers on Geonosis in Attack of the Clones). Whereas the original trilogy is also dated in a lot of ways, the ships, props etc are factually much higher quality. This is the reason the new films have gone back to practical effects and they openly admitted such.
@Tsurii How is that relevant? Ocarina is timeless, this isn't. How do you explain the Star Wars prequels looking more dated than the original trilogy? There is a lot more to how a piece of media ages than just, its age.
@BLP_Software The "North America only" is for retail only surely?? There's no excuse for it not to be on the PAL eShop at the same time. But if I'm right this part of the article wouldn't make sense "Unfortunately that's meant those hoping to get Afterbirth+ in Europe and Australia without messing about with eShop accounts have missed out" as you would be able to download it as normal with no messing about with accounts......I'm confused about this too.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Come on dude you're a well known and well regarded poster here and his question was blatantly friendly and innocent. That kind of aggressive, insecure overreaction should be kept to 4chan.
As somebody who entered your Switch competition and wants to win probably more than anything I've ever wanted, I would be SO HAPPY if one of the prizes were cancelled and sent to this kid. More creative than anything the majority of us have done I'm sure.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Nintendo already covered how they are sorting this a couple days ago. If you have any problems you have to go to their support page. They will try troubleshooting whether your problem is with software or hardware, and basic tips on avoiding interference first. Only if you still have problems will they assume it's this specific issue. At which point they replace/repair it no questions asked.
The vast majority of joycons won't experience this issue and even of the ones who have connection problems, not all of them will be this exact problem, so a recall would be a really bad, costly and mostly pointless move
@unoclay Well the only purpose they ever served was to give you the upgrades. Either you still want those upgrades in which case nothing has changed because you'll need to keep finding seeds. Or you already have all the upgrades, or don't care about them in which case the seeds are no longer relevant to your game in any way. UNLESS you just want to search for them just for the enjoyment of finding them, in which case, once again nothing has changed because you can just mess around in the map collecting them to your hearts content.
Bear in mind the amount of seeds needed to get all the upgrades is nowhere near 900. The point is to find them wherever and however you want to and not worry about the number or getting them all.
@Koapa The prize is the upgrades you get for each seed. And you unlock them all well before 900. So there's no possible reason to collect them all except for your own curiosity and love of collectibles, at which point the reward is pointless anyway.
This is entirely Konami's choice and has very little to do with him. And even if they did decide to do it I doubt they'd involve him given Silicon Knights' reputation these days.
I hope he's right and does know something though. Metal Gear Collection anyone
Metal Gear
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
Metal Gear Solid Remastered (PS1 version with updated graphics)
Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes Remastered (Gamecube version in HD with Nintendo references intact)
Metal Gear Solid 2 HD
Metal Gear Solid 3 HD
Metal Gear Solid 4
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (this one would be incredible on switch control wise)
Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes
Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain
All in one collection for switch Wildly unrealistic based on Konami's behaviour of late but hey we can all dream right

Re: WRC 7 Studio "Looking Into" Nintendo Switch Development
@ScorpionMG Project cars is a broken game with weak gameplay and the sequel is on the way, why would we want the first?
Re: WRC 7 Studio "Looking Into" Nintendo Switch Development
"gameplay will surely need some adaptation, but that is a good opportunity to rethink the driving experience."
I swear some devs get put off by this idea that they need to create motion controls and stuff. A realistic rally game should not be played with motion controls. If they wanted to bring it to Switch with some differences then cool but there is no possible reason they would NEED to, just give us a straight port and as long as it runs ok I would love it.
Re: Harvest Moon: Light of Hope to Brighten Up the Nintendo Switch
@Anti-Matter In the trash where it belongs hopefully. With that said the "SNES-style" sounds like it's in regards to the nostalgic style of the game and doesn't necessarily suggest it will be 2D visuals.
Re: Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition Is Off to a Roaring Start on the eShop Charts
Re: Famitsu Charts Show Strong Debut for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in Japan
@WiltonRoots That's actually really surprising, was there an XB1 game launch this week that could explain it?
Re: Video: Nintendo Switch Controllers All Have a Power Button Hiding in Plain Sight
"Hidden features are a staple of Nintendo consoles; where other manufacturers may drag you through a twenty minute tutorial after ever major update,"
What is this about lmao? I've had every Xbox and Playstation and have never seen an update tutorial
Re: Infinite Minigolf Will Tee Up on the Nintendo Switch eShop
@PanurgeJr Oh I'm well aware. But this particular comment you replied to was a pun and a great one, as opposed to a complaint. Not denying he does those too but this isn't really the place to talk about that.
Re: Infinite Minigolf Will Tee Up on the Nintendo Switch eShop
@PanurgeJr How on earth did you read that and think he was being serious? Haha
Re: Video: Developers Show Gameplay Footage of Minecraft: Switch Edition
@KJW90 What a sad, sad way to look at video games
Re: Guide: All the Nintendo Easter Eggs in LEGO City: Undercover
I'd be really interested to see what's in these locations in the PS4 and Xbox One versions, does anyone know? Like do the green cannons fire regular cannon balls, or do nothing? Does the cheep cheep minigame give you a generic fish?
EDIT: Sorry wrote this before I saw the comments above
Re: Review: LEGO City: Undercover (Switch)
Re: Review: LEGO City: Undercover (Switch)
@Tsurii How is that relevant? Ocarina is timeless, this isn't. How do you explain the Star Wars prequels looking more dated than the original trilogy? There is a lot more to how a piece of media ages than just, its age.
Re: Headup Games is Bringing The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ to Europe as a Switch Retail Release
Re: The Fall Part 2: Unbound is Confirmed for Nintendo Switch But Isn't Coming to Wii U
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Come on dude you're a well known and well regarded poster here and his question was blatantly friendly and innocent. That kind of aggressive, insecure overreaction should be kept to 4chan.
Re: Random: Japanese Kid Crafts Cardboard Nintendo Switch After Mother Refuses To Buy Him One
As somebody who entered your Switch competition and wants to win probably more than anything I've ever wanted, I would be SO HAPPY if one of the prizes were cancelled and sent to this kid. More creative than anything the majority of us have done I'm sure.
Re: Nintendo Fixes the Left Joy-Con Problem with a Small Piece of Foam
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Nintendo already covered how they are sorting this a couple days ago. If you have any problems you have to go to their support page. They will try troubleshooting whether your problem is with software or hardware, and basic tips on avoiding interference first. Only if you still have problems will they assume it's this specific issue. At which point they replace/repair it no questions asked.
The vast majority of joycons won't experience this issue and even of the ones who have connection problems, not all of them will be this exact problem, so a recall would be a really bad, costly and mostly pointless move
Re: Here's What You Get For Collecting All 900 Korok Seeds In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
Re: Here's What You Get For Collecting All 900 Korok Seeds In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
@Tempestryke You aren't supposed to collect them all.
Re: Here's What You Get For Collecting All 900 Korok Seeds In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
@unoclay That's not a spoiler. It has no relation to the story and knowing the total amount can't possibly affect your enjoyment of the game.
Re: Here's What You Get For Collecting All 900 Korok Seeds In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
@impurekind Yes I agree that's what I was trying to say!
Re: Here's What You Get For Collecting All 900 Korok Seeds In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
@Koapa The prize is the upgrades you get for each seed. And you unlock them all well before 900. So there's no possible reason to collect them all except for your own curiosity and love of collectibles, at which point the reward is pointless anyway.
Re: Denis Dyack Thinks Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes Could Come To Nintendo Switch
