Right now, Black Panther is the movie of the moment; Marvel’s latest release has been making headlines and smashing records left and right. The film was directed by Ryan Coogler, an acclaimed African American director who was noticed for his work on Creed in 2015. Now, Coogler is enjoying his time in the limelight once again with the positive reception to Black Panther, but he’s also revealed that he’s a fan of the Nintendo Switch.
In a recent interview at a red carpet event, Coogler said that he recently purchased a Nintendo Switch, with Stardew Valley being the game that’s been eating up a lot of his time. Amusingly enough, he said that he also picked up The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but hasn’t actually bothered to play it yet, because Stardew Valley is just that enticing.
What do you think? Is Stardew Valley better than Breath of the Wild? What did you think of Black Panther? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Of course they are. Switch is awesome. Can't say stardew valley drew me in that much though.
Cool, he's also a big fan of the Rocky movies which are some of my favorite movies of all time📽
So who else loved the Black panther movie?
@Meaty-cheeky
Coogler directed Creed, so yeah...he'd better be a fan of Rocky.
@Captain_Toad haven't watched it yet. Not Ready for all the feels! I need to though because all of my favorite podcasts are talking about it, and they have spoilers lol
Loved the movie. Not interested in stardew valley, but I don't think it can beat botw.
I'm just sad I haven't heard anything about a Black Panther game for the Switch yet. Long-time Panther fan here, and the movie was amazing.
So uhhh... I always wondered this and since it’s a uk site. What do black peolple I. The yo call themselves? Is it African UKins? I’m not trying to be funny.
@LUIGITORNADO Afro-Carribean is the census term. Most of the UK's black community have roots in the West Indies, they were invited over after World War 2 to do the jobs that were short staffed.
Black Panther was great!! Can’t wait for Infinity War though!!!!!
The movie was great! Not a Stardew fan but I love me some BOTW.
Black Panther was amazing! It was the Black Panther movie I had been dreaming of since I was a kid! I also love BotW but sadly haven't picked up Stardew Valley yet. I'm going through my backlog rn.
This is news? Christ we're just looking for anything aren't we?
@MsJubilee the naruto trilogy was just announced for switch if you’re into that.
Big fan of both the movie and that game.
That’s the best news ever
Excellent! I obviously prefer BotW though XD
@MsJubilee yet you click and comment!
Somebody make a BP game that isn’t lego. Go go!
Tony Stark: ....and that man is playing a Switch!
Hey, if Galaga can be referenced in one of those films....
I just saw Black Panther tonight and while it was very different in terms of the feel of the film when compared to Marvel's other movies it was still an excellent time. My Girlfriend and I enjoyed every minute of it. It really seems like Marvel can do no wrong because I can't think of a movie of theirs that I haven't enjoyed in the past decade or more.
Black Panther still isn't out here in Japan...
Anyway, I think Stardew Valley and BotW are too different of games to directly compare like that.
There was an Avenger game coming, made by Crystal Dynamics, so who knows.
Black Panther is my favorite MCU movie so far and I absolutely love this director. Wakanda Forever!
News... Right.
This is news? Had I not seen the movie last weekend, I would have changed my mind, based on this clickbait article alone. Maybe add this to the top of your CV, if you really want to show how skilled and experienced you are in writing online articles.
@EasyDaRon I care about important persons who like the Switch.
@LUIGITORNADO The thing about mixing the nationality you grew up with and the one your ancestors had is a very american thing. E.g. Vietnamese American, African American etc. It doesn't really happen elsewhere. Most people of African heritage in Britain would just call themselves British if they grew up here. Or the nation in Africa they're from if they didn't. Or if you're talking specifically about black people you could just say black people. You could also just say "African British" if you want, everyone would understand what you mean. But that isn't said commonly.
@MsJubilee If you don't consider an article newsworthy (on any media outlet, not just NL) the best message you can send is to not interact with it at all. A view and a comment is supremely positive feedback in the eyes of search engines and analytics, even if the comment is negative.
@AlexOlney I wouldn't think such a message would need to be sent. This article hardly needs to exist, and the reason is plain to see. Someone likes the Switch? Whoop-dee-doo. People like things, but that isn't anything new. It might've been considered news when a caveman invented the wheel and another caveman liked it. Liking the wheel was kind of a big deal.
@KayFiOS And yet here you are, generating views for it, encouraging similar content by just being here.
I'm not trying to be condescending but if you truly don't want something that thrives on attention to exist, the best thing you can do is ignore it entirely. Without attention these things die, so vote with your clicks.
@AlexOlney Better yet, look at consumer feedback instead of analytics.
@KayFiOS customer feedback: two whiney children confused that people are talking about videogames, vs 30 happy commenters
Analytics: dozens of replies and page refreshes per minute
either way, they're clearly doing something right
@russellohh And one person throwing insults around, acting like he's more mature.
@russellohh More importantly, I'm not talking about just this one article. NL always does this whenever news is slow; post meaningless content, and label it "NEWS." I liked it better when they promoted someone else's video on YouTube that they found worthy of showcasing. Not only did the article get clicks, the content creator would get views as well.
This is just pointless garbage.
Call me crazy, but I found Stardew to be boring after a while, while Zelda is perfect for short bursts of aimless wandering and discovery.
Can't wait to see Black Panther!
@EasyDaRon I would like to read that too.
Coogler is quickly becoming a favourite director of mine. I would love to see his reaction when he starts playing Zelda
Eh, black panther was good but over hyped. Spider man and avangers was way better!
Hey, nice. I don’t know, I think stuff like this is cool.
Anyway, I loved Creed but have no interest in Black Panther. Very talented director though. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
How ‘bout a Stardew movie next?
Oh, and I agree with him-as great as BotW is, I prefer Stardew. Incredible game.
@Meaty-cheeky No lie, Creed was probably the second best Rocky movie ever (right up there with the original). Rocky battling cancer as Adonis trained was as inspiring as anything they've done. And when Bill Condon's music kicked in before the last round of the fight, I was in heaven.
@KayFiOS hmm , i appreciate your half dozen comments over 5 hours talking about how unimportant this is to you.
I sure hope NintendoLife stops showing us cute, amusing videos of world famous multimillionares discussing their favorite Nintendo products to a reporter who's also a fan, and goes back to posting youtube links from some random 17 year old's rambling review of Zelda. Or better yet, reviews of 99 cent endless runners no one was ever going to buy anyway.
Truly, that's what the world needs.
Maybe you could post on here another 40 times, to make this breaking news article the highest-trending Nintendo article online?
@MsJubilee Ofc it's news . It's about Nintendo switch and this is a nintendo fansite. Unless you are here by accident.
If you want to know about the war in Syria or the low life that gunned down those students in US go elsewhere
Why the hell should anyone care what a multimillionaire likes? All that separates them from other people is a number. And, no, I don't spend every minute checking this page or my email. Contrary to what you might believe, I do have a life. And at this point, you're the only one bringing me back here because you're the only one who's so offended by my opinions that you have to clutter my inbox with your "argument," which equates to doing little else beyond being condescending.
I watched Black Panther with my son last weekend. We both loved it. During the movie I was thinking about how a Black Panther video game, done right, could be a very enticing purchase. I doubt that will happen but, you never know.
I see the sheep are still slaves to the status quo.
Dude, Black Panther was just fantastic. So was Creed for that matter. BP was the best Marvel movie since Iron Man.
Hoping to see Black Panther over the weekend.
And to all the people arguing that 'this isn't news', you would never hear about a celebrity talking about the Wii U or any games from it- ever. The word of mouth spreading info about the Switch is crazy!
@KayFiOS But you don't have opinions, you just whine and pout and shriek of "OMG WHO WANTS TO HEAR ABOUT VIDEOGAMES ON A VIDEO GAME SITE. WHO CARES WHO LIKES GAME AND WHO DOESN'T OMG VIDEOGAMES AREN'T NEWS".
Don't reply. Don't talk. Just leave this site and grow an actual opinion.
I, for one, very much liked the link and appreciate this little snippet of info that took me all of 20 seconds to read and 2.49 minutes to watch the video. Black Panther was awesome so this just adds to the awesomeness. I've never seen Coogler in interviews but from this small clip he seems very down to earth and big plus is he's into cool games and books. I also need to get into Altered Carbon.
@LUIGITORNADO Yeah as others have said nobody is obsessed with their heritage label like the Americans. It's more about where you were born. My step family, if they were American, might call themselves African-American, but in England they just call themselves English. They were born in England, grew up in England. They are half English anyway (maybe half English, half Scottish actually). If they went into more detail they might say, my Dad is English/Scottish and my Mum is Ugandan. I'd say I'm English, but then if you look at my heritage, I'm a quarter English, a quarter Welsh, half Scottish, with (within some of the quarters and halves) some Irish and Italian. But I was born in England. So I'm English.
I think it's more common to say you're English/Scottish/Welsh/Northern Irish (or Irish) than British. And UKish doesn't exist as people from the UK are British.
@MsJubilee To be fair, psychologically, when we hear a famous person likes what we like, it does make us feel better about ourselves. And Nintendo Life is doing their job in feeding Nintendo fans.
Having said that, it is rather a shallow story. If it was an interview with the director about gaming then maybe that would be different, though it would never happen.
@Roltarolta I know. My kids are 1/2 White, 3/4 Filipino and 1/4 Chinese if we are getting technical. One looks more Asian, one looks more White. But they are both raised in England.
(Although they love eating rice and spam more than anything, so that also qualifies them as an authentic Filipino.)
The problem with identity politics is that we are setting the races against each other, it is more prominent in the US, but is creeping over. Thankfully this is just a tiny percentage of the population doing that. Some want to portray themselves as victims for the discrimination of the past, some are racist bigots who want “pure” races, and of course there is still discrimination, but fortunately the majority of us don’t care about skin colour but about who you are as a person.
As time goes on the world will all be mixed race. And it will probably be a good thing. Holding on to cultures and traditions is probably the thing we should care about more. But I dunno, you got me thinking now. Hehe
Oh wow this comments section. People are weird.
@KayFiOS It pushes the Switch to more awareness to communities. For example you may have Ryan Coogler fans who are not interested in the Switch, but now that they see this, the switch may peak their interest.
Besides, why are you so bent out of shape about it?
Very overated film. Briefly fell asleep during. It is competent and well acted but uses exactly the same formula millions of other movies do. Very predictable and unbelievable etc. Also wtf soul stone comon'.
@dumedum What do you mean by unbelievable? It's a comic book film. And what formula would you suggest?
Breaking news- a human being likes the Switch. This is the most pointless article on Earth. Give me a break. In other news- Ryan Couglar also likes toast.
@KayFiOS I’m with you- I clicked on it to see if anyone else actually agreed with me. I couldn’t believe the title when I read it. It’s like an article from Viz Comics in the 90s. 😂
@deucezulu22 yeah but you can accept the premise and follow a consistency. This one didn't. I know what I won't do. The falling from Grace and the comeback trope, the tribe that says that won't help and you know they will (yawn), the odd incompetent guy (this time white and weak of course) who manages to do something important, the villian who is so evil "but really it's all our fault and we get his point" but he's still not going to be pardoned because... too much boilerplate.
You want to make a great film it's time you come up with more meaningful plots.
Of course you don't have to. It's a superhero film. The problem is it getting 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. It's overrated for completely political reasons. Blacks and their history . That's fine but it's still overrated .. judging the movie on its merits it is mediocre.
@dumedum Yes I can accept the premise and the majority of the audience and critics have as well. If that is all you got out of Killmonger then you nearly missed all of his points. And Ross was not incompetent, I don't know how you came to that realization. Sure the film had it's comic book tropes at times, but I see someone like you who brings it up, but never explain these new fresh ideas to add to the industry.
And sorry to tell ya, but Black Panther revolves around and is central to politics. You never noticed because now Black Panther is in the spotlight. If you think it's overrated, that's fine. You're just in the minority.
That's all well and good, but I think Black Panther is overrated shrug
@dumedum Honestly, I think you're trying too hard to find faults that aren't there. Were ticket sales inflated by the politics of Black History Month? Almost certainly. But in the actual film itself (at least in the way I interpreted it), the political message was largely neutral (in fact, one could argue it even leaned more so to the right)-- it acknowledged both sides-- the legitimacy of preserving one's culture (Wakanda was even protected by a wall), and the fact that refugees can indeed bring their problems with them. It also acknowledged not all traditions are necessary and past leaders make mistakes too. And even though T'Challa did decide to change course from that of his father after the conflict with Killmonger, did it show a wall being torn down or refugees coming in? No (unless maybe if you count Bucky as a refugee, though he was still taken in prior to the events). Instead, he merely stopped keeping Wakanda's prosperity and resources a secret from the rest of the world-- giving them the new opportunity to provide aid and share their culture OUTSIDE their borders (suggesting the prior was indeed legitimate). Also, unless you're counting Ross allowing himself to get injured as establishing him as incompetent (which by the same logic would also have to apply to T'Challa as well), that interpretation seems to be entirely in your head. If anything, the 97% (not 98) Rotten Tomatoes score was due to the fact that it equally appealed to everyone by not preaching or taking a side.
@AlexOlney I can't help but personally side with KayFiOS considering you never know whether something will be clickbait until after you've clicked and viewed it (thus the name). It might be wise to take the feedback in consideration-- clickbait may drive traffic, but it also hurts reputation. Case in point, I personally haven't been visiting this site much lately, and after I clicked a video like this, I get reminded why (the headline isn't even accurate-- he never said he was a big Nintendo Switch fan, just that he recently bought one). I also found it interesting that you felt compelled to respond KayFiOS, which tells me it may have hit a nerve.
@deucezulu22 I don't have a problem to be in the minority. Actually that's the whole point of the definition "overrated". I think that was a given. Also it's not my job to think of new ideas it's theirs. And if you want to see superhero movies that got it right , look at Spiderman: Homecoming with that incredible twist about Vulture's family or the breathtaking twist of Wonder Woman when you realize she was right all along about the villian. Real twists real suspense.
And Ross was a dork they made fun of the whole film.
@thatawesomedude what you say is legitimate it just has nothing to do what with what I said. I didn't say these critics using the movie for political reasons are correct. It never stopped the Left before. Of course you are correct, there is largely stuff here that President Trump can easily be supportive of, but they are still using it for their (phony) agenda. Also 100% of all movie critics give or take are of the Left so there is no two sides of this, and about moviegoers it is an action film so that never stopped conservatives from going to the films played and preached by Left actors.
Now the point is I have no problem with any of that. It it just the film itself on its merits is mediocre. And even with all the praises, the movie establishment doesn't think otherwise. We will not see any academy awards here, will we. To be honest , even the VFX disappointed with substantially weak CGI (acknowledged by many critics) compared with the stunning beauty of films like Guardians of the Galaxy 2 , Thor: Ragnarok and Dr. Strange.
@dumedum Never said you had a problem. Homecoming and WW has those tropes as well. Homecoming's twist is no different than the original film. The audience just doesn't know until later on. Different approach, yet still the same outcome. And for WW, the villain wasn't the twist, it was humanity.
No it's not your job, but saying something is overrated without any construction criticism is empty ( I see you finally talk about the cgi). I see you go on about some secret agenda, even though Black Panther has revolved around politics, and was around way before Trump, that says a lot right there. Given how the Academy Awards has been getting thrashed over the years, it's been slowly losing stock.
It is what it is. You don't have to reply, I'm just out here picking people's brain is all.
@deucezulu22 what original film? This is the first time we saw the Vulture (brilliantly acted by the best). The first Spiderman?
Finding out Ares was really responsible for the World War I think was the most beautiful thing in the film. Yeah it had further implications maybe but that moment....
@dumedum The first Spiderman (Tobey). WW already knew Ares was behind it, what she didn't know was that humanity was just as much the problem as Ares was. Hence why Ares tried to convince her to kill the scientist, because she was evil.
@deucezulu22 didn't to get your point about Spiderman then. Very different film than the Green Goblin one.
WW thought Ares was behind it - yes . But the audience was "oh what a naive superhero... Thinking Ares is responsible for WW I. There is no Ares involved. Your entire quest was based on a myth, a fairytale. " So when it was revealed Ares really was responsible , it was an amazing moment for the (possibly not to a hardcore WW buff maybe) spectator.
