We knew Outlast was coming to Nintendo Switch - in fact, we've been expecting Red Barrels' first-person horror hit to drop sometime in Q1 2018 - but it's just made a surprise jump scare on the eShop. Outlast: Bundle Of Terror collects together the first game and The Whistleblower DLC into one package, slaps on a £19.99 price tag and stands ready to shorten your life with some heart-pumping horror.
No word yet on a release date for Outlast II, but considering how the original just dropped onto the eShop without warning, we could be getting it anytime. As of writing, Outlast: Bundle Of Terror is only available on the EU eShop, but we wouldn't be surprised to see it drop onto the North American one shortly as well.
Will you be adding this scare-fest to your digital collection? You can look out for our official review soon on the site.

Well that was out of nowhere.
Amazing news. I'll be picking this up today but I'll wait to see if it arrives on the US Eshop first as it'll likely cost $19.99. Saying that, Detention and Final Station are both cheaper in the UK than US, once converted. Even more so on the South African and Russian Eshop's. Maybe this is the start of a new trend.
Can't believe they just released Outlast like that.So we have 3 of the scariest horror games ever made, Layers of Fear, Outlast and Detention all arriving over an 8 day period. Outlast 2 next week perhaps?
@crackafreeze Haha that's true. I got a jump scare when I opened the Eshop.
$33.45 in the Australian eShop. Eep, that makes it one of the pricier eShop exclusives. I'm interested but there might be a few other cheaper games that take priority for me.
I think one if the most startling things in this game was being chased in the third or fourth level, and realising the loon who was running after me had his man-junk out, which was flapping about like a perturbed windsock... practically burnt into my mind that is...
How does it perform?!
20€ is a bit pricey, I've got this on the PS4 already!
amazing game !!!!! i might re visit on my switch if it looks good on handheld mode
I'd wait for reviews. Yes, we knew it was coming at some point but a port dropping out of nowhere onto the eShop could be a bad sign.
Great game. One for headphones!
20 bucks for such an old and average game that has been available on multiple devices for years? No thanks. I mean, it's nowhere near as pathetic as Skyrim, but still.
Give me the second and I'll think about it...
@SuperCharlie78 Considering it's €20 on Steam and another €10 for The Whistleblower DLC, the price is not too bad I guess. Though I imagine it's been available numerous times for far cheaper during sales.
And regarding Outlast II, expect to pay about €30 for that on Switch.
Thats strange. Not even on a eshop-tuesday.
@BarryDunne I expect it will go live on the US Eshop in the next few hours. Usually it doesn't update till after 5pm UK time.
great game. nasty, brutal, adult gaming that is genuinely scary. never played the dlc. so i have no quibbles about double dipping. the pc version ran beautifully on my anemic laptop years ago, so i expect decent performance. insta-bought
@RasandeRose It is Tuesday. Funny you say though as I initially thought the same thing.
@Sculptor yeah screw the developers and the work they put in. They should work for free and this game should be 5 bucks also.
One for the watch list. Wonder how it plays
@OorWullie Lol those games all reviewed pretty well but none of them are remotely close to being one of the scariest games of all time. Outlast I could maybe give you but even that would be a stretch, but Detention and Layers of Fear are not even in the top 50 realistically. Have you heard of the Amnesia series? Silent Hill? Alien Isolation? Hell, even PT blows them out the water though it's debatable if that counts.
1300 RUB (Russia) on the russian eshop, equivalent of £16.65. No need to worry about bank charges either if you pay using Revolut.
@PorllM Just saying what I've read. Gamesradar have Layers of Fear as the 2nd scariest of all time,Telegraph feature it in top 16 of all time. You can find it featured in several other top lists too. Outlast features in nearly every single list out there.Detention I should have said one of the scariest 2D games of all time.
@PorllM
Alien: Isolation???
Awful. Not scary, not even a game
@kobashi100
This game was 20 bucks at launch. The game is old, the profits were reaped years ago across multiple platforms and porting it wasn't nearly as much work as when they first created it from the ground up. Considering those variables I'd say half of its current price would be more adequate.
As it stands it's just easy cashing. But hey, who's to blame them. I'm passing on it though.
@OorWullie
srry, I mean thursday.
@Sculptor so yeah you want the game to be released for 5 bucks and the DLC for 5 bucks so 10 bucks all on.
Yeah that's never gonna happen
@Scottwood101 I've been using Revolut for a few weeks now, it's brilliant. As someone who lives abroad but receives payments into my UK bank it's going to save me so much going forward. As for using it to purchase games, I've only used it successfully on the South African Eshop so far. The US and Japanese Eshop's wouldn't accept it . Good to know the Russian Eshop accepts it too.It seems like any country that's in the PAL region will. However I can use Revolut to purchase Eshop credit from US Amazon and then buy my games from there that way. For the most part the US Eshop is still the cheapest place. Setting up Amazon to accept digit orders from outside US requires a couple of steps though so it's not as straight forward.
@kobashi100
Then I'll keep on passing.
@NintendoFan4Lyf
That just means it's overpriced there as well.
So does Mario's face cover the nudity in the game?
In fairness to @Sculptor, the game has been available in the past on other platforms for $5 and it's been part of Humble Bundles.
@OorWullie well I've never actually tested it on the Russian shop, however I bought Sonic Mania from there with my normal Visa Debit card, no problem. The one eshop which is the cheapest 90% of the time is the Mexican Eshop but I'm as yet to find a solution to buying from there.
One of my favourite horror games! I'd probably grab it if it went on a big sale considering I already have it on PC and PS4 and have played through it several times.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
1. The game is 20$ right now on every other game shop. There is no difference in price currently so whether or not it was 5 dollars in the past this is the standard price now.
2. Something being apart of humble bundles is irrelevant. Hollow knight is currently on humble so what? Are they going to permanently drop their price from 15$ to 10$? Dark Souls 3 is on humble this month, so are they going to permanently drop its price as well?
Well it’ll be nice to have a well known horror game on the switch but shame I bought this way back when it was on sale on the PS4 otherwise I’d buy this. Nice to know that it’s unexpected. May get the sequel if it comes on the switch
@kobashi100 Dude, this game has been out elsewhere for more than a month. Clearly it has to cost 1 buck at most.... clearly...
Awesome, I hope having ownership of this would give discounted price for the second one, like how they did with RE Revelations.
Hopefully it's a good port then, it usually does not bode well for games to just appear.
Horror is not one of my favorite genres but I do play them occasionally. I will be interested in this and Layers of Fear, just need to decide on which one.
Gameplay of Switch version here:

This game is so good. Highly recommended.
Just watched a tiny bit of gameplay from the Switch version,didn't want any spoilers. In the comments below the uploader said it's a great port and is extraordinary in portable mode.
Outlast, Hollow, Layers of Fear... Oh my!
Once it hits here in 'Merica, Im snatching this up!
@Scottwood101 Just successfully bought it from the Russian Eshop using Revolut. It cost me £16.82 which is slightly more than the £16.66 XE.com converted to, I'll survive It is releasing on the US Eshop today but will cost $24.99 which works out more expensive at 18 quid. I've now got MyNintendo coins in 4 different countries.
Skip. Was expecting both full games to be released physically.
@BenAV Like jumpscare
Outlast 2 will arrive on the 27th March and will cost £26.99/ $29.99. Strangely it will cost just £15.27/$21.27 on the South African Eshop,which is £3.50/$4.50 cheaper than Outlast 1 cost on there. I just bought Outlast from the Russian Eshop for £16.82/$23.18 which was the cheapest option yet the sequel will cost the equivalent of $33. Still cheaper than the UK but more than US. Multiple Nintendo accounts and a Revolut account is definitely the way to go if you want to save a few quid on all your Eshop purchases.
Even the release was a jump-scare!
LOL Outlast is 1008p (not 1080p) when docked. They must be trying to troll the Digital Foundry fanbase.
Red Barrel should have made the game's undocked resolution 702p rather than 720p for consistency's sake.
I am so getting this, will be jumping straight into this after layers of fear
I want a physical release.
I'll still buy it digitally but, only if it's confirmed not coming to retail. Reason being my 400 GB card is down to the last 100 GB already. I need to start being a little bit choosy with which games I buy digital. I've been going hogwild buying every gosh dang thing that comes to the eShop that's good.
I definitely want to grab the games though
@JaxonH That's how I'm feeling. Held off on Owlboy after I saw the physical version of Darkest Dungeon was announced 4 days after it launched (and two days after I bought it.) I want every single good game I can get but storage only goes so far for digital games.
That being said I have absolutely ZERO qualms double dipping on games that I really love. If a physical version of Celeste comes out I will be on that in a heartbeat.
@Sculptor Average game? Lay off the meth, bruh! It's one of the best horror games ever made. $20 really isn't bad for what you get. I bet you were one of the suckers that paid for that overpriced Street Fighter port.
@OorWullie it has since been released in Mexico for the equivalent of £12.61 and Canada for £14.10. Don't know if Canadian eshop will work from here and still yet to find a solution to buying from the Mexican Eshop. Read that Revolut still doesn't work and I'm struggling to find pre paid Mexican Eshop vouchers.
Yes for some reason it's considerably cheaper in Mexico, yay I guess?
God everyone acts like they are getting ripped off yet like countless people have said it's the same price or dearer on other platforms. £20 is more than fair for the game plus it's DLC.
I want to play this...but I'm too scared
Review please!
@MongolRaider
Well I really feel that way because it just heavily relies on jump scares, as it's not really scary in any other way. This is because the AI isn't anything to write home about. It's barely AI to begin with. Enemies just walk around in circles, in given and predictable patterns.
And when they do spot you, you can just always run to the same friggin' locker to hide in, 'cause if an enemy doesn't check a locker once, that means it never will. There's just no reason to be scared at all.
I really digged the game's setting and atmosphere, but it lacked depth because it's technically so barebones and to me, it's not worth 20 bucks and calling it the best horror game ever is more horrifying than the game itself.
Nonetheless, if you did enjoy it so much then I'm happy for you and I hope you'll enjoy the portable edition once more. I'm looking into Outlast II, never tried that one and I hope they've improved upon these issues.
Outlast 2 is listed on eshop for 27th march release...
@SayGuh The Whistleblower DLC blew (no pun intended ) me away to be honest. Liked it even more than the main game's story. Even more than Outlast 2!
Hopefully a physical release one day... I’d so add that to my collection.
