Eiji Aonuma...boy, can that man pull off the beard-mustache combo. Sure, he's got Zelda and all that, but let's be real, here: the real legend is that sweet facial hair.
Seems like they're really determined to fix the gripes most people had with the first--they even changed the somewhat off-putting art style.
I did like the first a lot, even with the bugs, so I'm definitely interested...but it may take a while to get to it with my backlog--and E3 probably adding to that. If it had been announced further ahead of time, that would've helped. On the list it goes, though!
My immediate reaction was that it looks like Repede from Tales of Vesperia. Which is a much better comparison, IMO. Sif's not wearing any equipment, and the art styles are really different.
Y'know, Playtonic's been kinda quiet since Yooka-Laylee...perhaps they were approached by Rare/Microsoft to help with a new Banjo game? Even if it was indie-level, that would still be huge.
I definitely didn't forget! LM3 is one of my most anticipated releases this year along with Astral Chain (And that Retro Studios project involving the robot hand--I know it's coming!) After Dark Moon, LM is now an important, established franchise for me. Was so hyped last year I replayed DM for kicks, in fact.
Genuinely surprised they're making these changes. I would say I'm impressed, though I'd wager this is more self-preservational than anything. Which is the argument I'd respond with to those talking about the creators' "vision" being compromised by fan demand.
The one thing I know about Hollywood: they bend to the masses. 9 times out of 10, the creator has no vision aside from "sell as many tickets as possible." Which is why most movies are cookie-cutter clones of the same formula--they stick with what works, and what sells. The few movies that actually are art hardly ever make it big, and the ones that do are often based on already existing (and popular) stories, usually books. There's very little room for unique material or vision. So for the vast majority of movies, it's about the cash.
This Sonic movie is no different. They looked at the negative response numbers (the trailer currently has about half a million dislikes,) and realized they might not recoup their budget if none of those people buy tickets. And they're too deep in to scrap it all at this point. So...like always, they will bend.
Also...if they WERE concerned about vision and making a good Sonic movie, then naturally they would make changes if their audience, the fanbase, takes issue, as they're obviously the people they'd most want to like it.
As whiny as the Sonic fanbase can be, I wouldn't throw this all on them. As an artist myself, I know the deal: if you want more people to like it, you bend. If you want to stay true to your vision, prepare to bear all the abuse that might come.
Funny...Sonic Team has difficulty making a hit, then Sonic fan devs swoop in and nail it with Mania. Then Paramount blows it with Sonic's design, and Sonic fans show them up with much improved aesthetics...
Yup, totally agree with Tomita and all these people. Soundtrack was very disappointing. I became a fan of Tomita after his amazing tracks from not only Wooly World, but also from Epic Yarn and even as far back as Wario Land: Shake It. Hearing about his leaving Good Feel was a huge bummer, and really made me concerned about Crafted World...too bad those concerns were founded.
Thing is, I also kinda have to blame Totaka too--he was supervising the new guy. Seems like he took the Yoshi's Story approach with the recurring theme music...that game was worse for it, too.
I REALLY want to see this on Switch...I loved the Spyro games all those years ago, and have never gotten the chance to play them since. Plus, they look incredible with this remaster.
If you're listening, Activision, I would absolutely buy this on Switch. Please.
Erm...wouldn't they need to erase literally every reference to Punch Out in this case as well? That game is rife with the broadest of stereotypes...I don't get the distinction.
Eh, what do I know? It's possible Nintendo got a specific nasty letter from one single person, and removed the feather because of that. I guess it's 'removal upon complaint,' then.
I find myself very interested in this. I don't know why...but that art just sells it for me. It just looks like it really does have great characters and so forth, all from one piece of art.
Whoever did the art for this is really talented. It's not easy to capture that kind of personality in a single image.
It is for me! I am beyond excited for this update, as I adore all of these characters, and they look really fun to play. I run the boss rush as everyone, and often go back to improve my times on certain abilities and characters. Sometimes I still go back to Planet Robobot's arena mode, if that tells you anything. And I'm always up for the original Arena in Super Star.
So in short (too late, lol) yes, there are people who love to go back and play Kirby over and over, be it the Arena or the main game. Granted, I do admit Star Allies isn't the best...but dangit, no other Kirby game let's me play as THIS many characters.
Plus, free stuff, man. I can't complain, even if I only decided to play these guys for five minutes. I mean, Super Bomberman R still gets updates, and I doubt many are still playing that. These kinds of things are for the nutjobs like me that are diehard fans.
For the most part, I can understand why people are lukewarm to this game, and to the updates. As someone who's played through Guest Star mode with every character so far, I can attest that the levels are generally pretty repetitive, and the characters are more like additional Kirby abilities than actual characters. So I get the apathy.
But...I still get unreasonably hyped every time they show a new character. And I fully intend to play through Guest Star mode with all of them when they're out. Why? Couldn't tell you. I'm just a massive Kirby fan, and I'm blown away by how many of my favorites from the series that I'm getting a chance to play as. And it's not like they're charging for it, either--though I'd likely still buy if they did. Maybe I'm crazy...but this Kirby fan is happy with these updates.
Oh, and if you want replay value...I will direct you to the Ultimate Choice. Chasing faster times against the bosses with different abilities has always been a Kirby series highlight post-game.
Aw... Bomberman's design has always been universally appealing. This man had a talent that was very admirable. Not everyone can make an art style with so much heart and approachability. It's sad to see him go...
Rest in peace, and thoughts and prayers for his family.
Uh...they're not even close to being the same game. Aside from the fact that painting with bright colors is involved, in which case, Mario Paint could also be considered similar, lol.
Regardless, I am actually surprised to see this--I never thought it would surface again in a million years. The series may not be the most popular, but I found it fun and creative. Here's hoping it finds a new audience on Switch!
Thanks so much for the detailed response! So, it sounds about like I was thinking, then. I'm actually pretty happy about that--I get why others may want the depth of wild battles, but I've spent the last 20 years or so slogging through every RPG on the face of the earth, and while that's fun for a while (especially when you have more time,) I've pretty much had my fill of grinding and gaining experience. I love the designs of the first gen Pokemon, and I'm glad I can finally catch all of them without having to do so much work. The trainer and gym battles will work fine for me. I find I am strangely excited for this now, lol. Can't wait to get (back) into Pokemon!
Y'know...I'm also wondering if, perhaps after catching a Pokemon the first time so easily, anytime you try to capture another if the same type, it might actually try harder to avoid getting hit by the Pokeball? If capturing does give experience, then it would make sense that it would get harder the more times you try. I find it hard to believe they ALL just stand there. It's not a deal-breaker if so, but it would seem like a missed opportunity.
Ok, so...I am oddly interested in this. I've been a Nintendo fan for my entire life, but never got into Pokemon, aside from the original show when I was a kid, and, strangely enough, Pokemon Snap. I have never played a main series entry, but I AM very familiar--And in a way, attached to--Gen 1. So I find this seems appealing to me.
My one question is, it sounds like pretty much everything is the same as a main series game, aside from the fact the you don't battle wild Pokemon. How big of a difference will that make, compared to the main series? Because from my outsider perspective, it seems like that would significantly speed up the gameplay (In some ways, a plus for me--excessive RPG battles have begun to grind on me in my old age, lol.) Also, if you can't battle wild Pokemon, do your Pokemon still level up And so on? Otherwise it sounds like it would be crazy shallow.
I find it relatively criminal that Ristar has been mentioned a total of about five times in 150+ posts. I mean, that's the first game I thought of. Don't get me wrong, I love SoA as much as the next guy...but come on, guys. Ristar is a classic!
"In my day, we didn't have some fancy extra menu to show us how well we were doing--it was difficult enough to get more than one gameplay screen! We just used our own sense of accomplishment!" ~Cranky Kong
Seriously, though, this was how I always did it. Like with the Kirby series' arena modes--the game didn't tell me to play through it with each ability exclusively, nor did it record the times for each (of course, it does NOW, in Star Allies.) I set that goal for myself. You don't need the game to do that for you.
And if it's more the whole "tracking your accomplishments against your friends" thing that you like...well, you can post scores and victory screens to social media if you TRULY need that kind of validation on Switch. Not that I get the reasoning for wanting such a thing. But I've never been at all competitive, so the concept doesn't interest me much. I suppose I can understand why the general populace might want it, though.
Kind of a slap in the face to ARMS pros, honestly. It takes quite a lot of time and effort to become truly skilled at ARMS. I can't deny it's not as popular as Smash, but at least it's something new and interesting. How do they know it won't be a big hit if they don't give it a chance?
Right there with you, man! I get the itch to play this game all the time. I've probably played at least once a week since launch, save for a brief break for Mario Odyssey. I don't really get the whole "I got bored after 20 minutes" stuff I keep hearing. It's never unsatisfying to play ARMS, in my experience.
I had that exact Yoshi toy, and I did the exact same thing with it! I took that thing with me absolutely everywhere. Until the fateful day when my dog ate it.
Needless to say, I was NOT very happy with that canine.
Gosh, you took the words right out of my mouth! I loved BotW's open world, but that was because it was fresh for Zelda. Another world just as big every few years would be a slog. Kind of the same reason I've cooled on the Xeno series, and Fire Emblem (I can only have so much strategy gameplay.) These styles of games take hundreds of hours to complete; it gets exhausting after so many.
What would I like them to do? Use BotW's engine and assets to create a traditional Zelda. Like a "buddy" game, that can even have bearing on BotW's story. Shorter development time, more money for Nintendo, traditional fans appeased. Who loses here?
Too bad I can't vote for Sonic Mania and ARMS more than once. They were easily my top 2 this year. And yes, I'm aware of the magnificence of Mario Odyssey and BotW. But ARMS is fresh and has kept me entertained over a longer period than the big 2, and Sonic Mania did the same along with also being incredibly hype-inducing. It also has to do with replayability; Mario and Zelda may have been perfection while they lasted, but they're limited by the fact that once you fully explore the world, it's pretty much over. Sonic and ARMS are more arcade-type experiences that you can replay endlessly as different characters or in different ways.
But don't get me wrong--I love all these games, and I'm beyond happy the Switch is doing so well. Here's to an awesome 2018!!
Some surprisingly tolerant and even open-minded folks here. I honestly expected most to react much more negatively about this kind of thing. Maybe the Internet is actually getting more tolerant...?!
(Just to clarify, I'm GLAD to see those being open and considerate. I always try to be.)
You and me both! I voted for Magic and Animal more times than I can count. I was really hoping for Magic, but I'm super psyched Mirror made the cut. If there was any ability I'd have given the win to after those two, it's Mirror.
Gotta agree with the author on this one. These were my exact gripes with this game from the start. And before people start berating me, yes, I loved this game. Played tons of it. It's phenominal.
But it doesn't fit as a Zelda game for me.
Let me put it this way: would this game not have been 10x better if it was a new IP? It would have blown people away. Eclipsed Zelda for sure, but at least then traditional Zelda would still coexist with it. It bothers me when Nintendo warps a game series' key elements to make it fresh, when they could have just made a "Splatoon," if you will. HAL does this with Kirby all the time, and it's disappointing considering the awesome new series they could make.
But at least with Kirby, you have the main series with traditional gameplay, and the spin offs for the new gameplay. Zelda could easily do this, considering the handheld and console teams are merged now (or will be.)
There's nothing wrong with expecting subsequent games in a series to be similar, people. That's why it's a series and not an anthology.
Well... my earliest gaming memory, I actually must give to Sonic, and his first game. But since then, Nintendo rapidly overtook Sega as purveyor of my most cherished memories. Earliest Nintendo one is good ol' Mario 3, which I used to play with my sister, and to this day consider one of the best games ever made. Other memories: my mom waking me up with Yoshi's Island, crying at the end of Ocarina of Time (come back, Navi!!), being scared to death of the eel at the bottom of Jolly Roger Bay, and enjoying the endless speculation at the roster of Smash 4 on Smashboards.
Also, I love how they change the gorgeous title screen art for each new character. I hope we get an option to choose which one to use later. And art for the rest of the established roster too!
Yes, I would LOVE to see more Kirby merch over here! As is I have to import everything. Very little besides amiibo is availible in the states. It's kinda frustrating, actually...
For years I have been dreaming of my ideal Kirby game: basically a full game based on The Arena, pulling every boss they can from the series and every ability, and making it a sort of hybrid fighting/beat 'em up with multiplayer brawls, a boss rush mode, and stages with hordes of normal enemies to mow down. I feel like Kirby's gameplay is PERFECT for this.
Perhaps this will finally be the game I've been waiting for...
True. And I agree about the Avatar. Ike has much more going for him, hence why I was drawn to PoR. Nothing beats an actual preset protagonist. Too bad PoR is crazy expensive now... rerelease please, Nintendo?
I started with Path of Radiance on Gamecube, and I was heavily drawn into the series thanks to it. But I might be biased on that title. Still probably my favorite, though.
For accessibility however, the GBA Fire Emblem has a lot of tutorials and so forth, so that might be better. Or any of the modern titles with the "casual" mode (though I feel they miss a main selling point of the series: permadeath).
Lots of great choices, though. It's a great series.
Edit: Ninja'd. But hey, if two people on the Internet agree, you know it's true...

Re: Sonic Movie Director Responds To Criticism, Promises Changes Will Be Made To Hedgehog Design

And they're too deep in to scrap it all at this point. So...like always, they will bend.

But don't get me wrong--I love all these games, and I'm beyond happy the Switch is doing so well. Here's to an awesome 2018!!
Re: Nintendo Reveals the Ages of Pearl and Marina
Some surprisingly tolerant and even open-minded folks here. I honestly expected most to react much more negatively about this kind of thing. Maybe the Internet is actually getting more tolerant...?!
(Just to clarify, I'm GLAD to see those being open and considerate. I always try to be.)
Re: The Results of the First Kirby Copy Ability Poll Are In
@Klunk23
You and me both! I voted for Magic and Animal more times than I can count. I was really hoping for Magic, but I'm super psyched Mirror made the cut. If there was any ability I'd have given the win to after those two, it's Mirror.
I'm ready for round 2!
Re: Soapbox: Breath Of The Wild Is Amazing, But Is It The Game That Zelda Enthusiasts Expected?
Re: Nintendo is Now 128 Years Old
Well... my earliest gaming memory, I actually must give to Sonic, and his first game.
Thanks for everything, Nintendo.
Re: Here's The New Fighter Coming To Switch Brawler ARMS
Wait...
Lola Pop
Lollipop
...that took me way too long to get, lol.
Also, I love how they change the gorgeous title screen art for each new character. I hope we get an option to choose which one to use later. And art for the rest of the established roster too!
Re: Atlus Is Bringing Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology to the West in 2018
Good! I want to actually buy it this time, as I first played it from a rental and then bought secondhand. I want Atlus to know I want more RH!
Even if I don't necessarily like the new art style, lol.

Re: Adorable Kirby Accessories Added to Official Japanese Anniversary Website
Yes, I would LOVE to see more Kirby merch over here! As is I have to import everything. Very little besides amiibo is availible in the states. It's kinda frustrating, actually...
Re: Satoshi Ishida Hints at the Upcoming Kirby Multiplayer Game
For years I have been dreaming of my ideal Kirby game: basically a full game based on The Arena, pulling every boss they can from the series and every ability, and making it a sort of hybrid fighting/beat 'em up with multiplayer brawls, a boss rush mode, and stages with hordes of normal enemies to mow down. I feel like Kirby's gameplay is PERFECT for this.
Perhaps this will finally be the game I've been waiting for...
Re: Atlus Launches a Teaser Site Hinting at a New Radiant Historia
Don't care if it's a remake or not, buying the heck out of it. That is, if it's confirmed for Western shores...
...It better be.
Re: Sonic Mania Has Been Delayed Until Summer
Whoo! They remixed one of my favorite zones: Flying Battery! I am now more hyped than ever for this.
As for the delay... meh. Doesn't bother me. I haven't been able to find a switch yet, so it's not like I can play it right now anyway, lol.
Re: Video: This Poochy and Yoshi's Woolly World Short Film is Pure Fluffy Delight
I laughed. I actually laughed. And then I awww-ed. That may have been the most adorable thing I've ever seen. Or at least in the top five.
Re: Fire Emblem Game's Development Outed By Voice Actor
@Wexter
True. And I agree about the Avatar. Ike has much more going for him, hence why I was drawn to PoR. Nothing beats an actual preset protagonist. Too bad PoR is crazy expensive now... rerelease please, Nintendo?
Re: Fire Emblem Game's Development Outed By Voice Actor
@msvt
