Re: Video: Yoshi's Story Comes Back to Life in Our Brand New Video Series

Philo

@Alex_Olney , I have to say, thank you for sticking up for this game. it's always bugged me that no one else seemed to get what was good about it. It's nice to see it get some positive coverage for once!

Great video all around. I have always wondered what a banana peel might taste like, but never been brave enough to try. Now I know not to. You are a hero to us all, Alex, and may you rest well knowing the sacrifice of your taste buds was not in vain!

Re: Editorial: From Metroid: Other M to Star Fox Zero, the Awkward Experimentation With Beloved Franchises

Philo

See, this 'experimental vs. traditional' divide is why I love the Kirby series; they keep the two types distinctly separated. Games like Canvas Curse and Mass Attack keep things fresh, bring in great review scores and attract new fans, while games like Triple Deluxe and RtDL appease the existing fanbase. I don't really get why other series can't do this too, as I'm pretty sure Kirby isn't one of Nintendo's biggest sellers, or at least doesn't sell enough to justify having so many games released (not that I'm complaining about that... I'm a huge kirby fan. ). It just seems like if they can afford to do that with Kirby, then why not with Metroid or Starfox too?

Re: SpongeBob SquarePants is the Theme for the Next Splatoon Splatfest

Philo

@MasterWario

Band Geeks is easily THE best episode, as far as I'm concerned, though pretty much any Squilliam episodes are great. Of course, I am definitely talking about pre-season 3. In my mind, Spongebob was cancelled after that.

On a side note... Definitely team Patrick. Too bad I don't actually own Splatoon, though...

Re: Feature: The Biggest Wii U Games of 2016 - Spring Edition

Philo

@rjejr

Ouch, that is pretty bad... still, could be worse. Could be Mighty no. 9. Good thing I didn't back that one. If Playtonic pulls an Inafune on me, we're done. Don't care how many great DK and Banjo memories they gave me...

Even worse than those, though, is the horrible possibility of a direct sequel with story continuation getting shelved or outright canned. Thank the gods of gaming ZE3 finally saw the light of day...

Re: Feature: The Biggest Wii U Games of 2016 - Spring Edition

Philo

@rjejr

In other words, pulling a TP, right? It is strange how many similarities YL is sharing with Zelda U, though; announce it, show some footage, and then nothing for a year or so. The only reason I'd say it's not possible for YL to go the TP route is that I doubt anyone but the biggest devs have been trusted with NX kits. That, and I have an admittedly overlarge amount of trust in the Playtonic team. They're a good bunch of guys, right? They wouldn't pull that on us, right??

Re: Video: Check Out this Japanese Overview of Kirby: Planet Robobot

Philo

@HyrulianOfHyrule

I am way happier about this than I should be. But mirror should have come back a LONG time ago. Also super happy that jet is back too!

This game is looking great! Good to see that they're using that scrapped 3D Kirby concept from RtDL's development for a minigame. Always wanted to see how that would play...

Re: Review: Yoshi's Story (Wii U eShop / N64)

Philo

@VanillaLake @MasterWario @Simbabbad

Seems you guys actually understand the TRUE challenge of Yoshi's Story. I was beginning to think I was the only one. for some reason, people don't consider a game challenging unless it throws that challenge straight in your face. But sometimes, you've got to make your own challenge, like attempting achievements. Or going ability-less in Kirby boss fights. That's what this game is all about.

Re: Splatoon to Arrive on 3DS Under the Name "Splatoon Legends"

Philo

Haha, nice one guys... would have been more convincing if you hadn't called it 'legends'. makes no sense in the Splatoon universe. Though I guess all the jokes drawing comparison with HW wouldn't have worked otherwise... either way, It's funnier when you DON'T feel like the biggest idiot on the planet for believing it anyway. IGN got me once like that...

Also... lol at 29 FPS. Classic...

Re: Feature: Some of Our Favourite 3DS Games - Fifth Anniversary Edition

Philo

@Ralizah Haha, I know exactly how you feel about VLR. That and 999 are pretty much the top games in my collection for both of the DS lines. I think most would call me crazy for being more excited about the ZE series than generally any games recently, but it's nice to know someone else holds it in as high regard as I do.

And yeah, I'm also a bit concerned about the new 'cinematic' approach of ZTD... I was always a supporter of the hand-drawn stuff in 999, so it's a bit of big change for me to accept. If they had just kept VLR's style it would've been fine... but if it helps to get the writing's point across, then it should be okay. I just hope it doesn't get in the way of it instead...

Re: Feature: Some of Our Favourite 3DS Games - Fifth Anniversary Edition

Philo

@Ralizah You're definitely not alone there. I've put way more time on the handheld version, if for no other reason than Smash Run. Not only that, but I feel the AI is a bit better balanced, too. Then again, I am much more of a solo player, so that might be the reason I like it so much...

Also, very disappointed to see VLR missing again... Not nearly enough love for Zero Escape.

Re: Scribblenauts Studio 5th Cell Is Closing Its Doors

Philo

@Kaviam Agreed. Honestly I found Lock's Quest to be the only game of theirs I actually really resonated with. Not that I didn't have fun with Drawn to Life and Scribblenauts, but I feel those were more smartphone type games; fun to mess around with for awhile, but lacking the kind of depth, story and characterization of Lock's Quest. I would've liked to see more games like that one.

Either way, these guys were always really ambitious, and I can respect that. I'm sorry to see them fall on such hard times... here's hoping those laid off can find some great new jobs.

Re: Nintendo Life Weekly: "Leaked" NX Controller, Miitomo Japanese Launch Success and More

Philo

I always like to watch these videos, even though I know all the news beforehand. Watching Alex read it in the zany way he does is always good for a quick chuckle. I feel that's worth 3 minutes of my time. Gotta get laughs where you can, right?

On another note, not a whole lot of news this week... :/ At least there was the stuff about Zero Escape 3. Could not be more excited for that game!

Re: Talking Point: Sony's PlayStation VR Launch Adds Pressure to Nintendo's Holiday - and Perhaps NX - Plans

Philo

@Kirk Ok, I getcha. I suppose it probably wasn't the best idea in the first place for me to use part of a VR enthusiast's argument in favor of the tech for an explaination of why I'm not really into it. Not to mention, I pretty much do only have cursory knowledge of it anyway. Those were just my thoughts on the tech based on my impressions. Who knows, I might actually like it if I tried it. I'm just not in a huge rush to get on board, as I'm still happy with the current tech.

If I do try it, though, and this is no offense intended, it'll be when I decide to do it based on my own desire. I tend not to be swayed by others' opinions of things, no matter how good they tell me it is. I'm just stubborn like that. You'd be shocked to know just how long it took me to adopt smartphones, for example...

Re: Talking Point: Sony's PlayStation VR Launch Adds Pressure to Nintendo's Holiday - and Perhaps NX - Plans

Philo

@Kirk Yeowch, guess I woke the beast... Sorry if I offend, that was not my intent at all, just voicing my opinion. And also, just want to point out, lashing out at someone for partial or even full non-understanding of a thing you happen to be passionate about is not particularly neccessary, nor does it help people want to accept your view or share it. Clearly you care very much about VR, and that's good, just keep in mind that not everyone who shares a different view is trying to step on your toes. I sure wasn't, and I didn't think I worded it angrily, but I apologize if it came off that way. I actually thought I was being supportive of what VR could be, as the end of my post says.

Also, I did follow that link, and though I didn't watch all the videos (there were a lot, lol.) I will concede that VR can certainly be used for a variety of games, and may end up being a successful gaming platform for many. However, I stick to my original point that it just isn't for me. Referencing the article for a moment, it states that VR will be the next major shift in gaming, like 2D gaming moving to 3D. But even if that comes to pass, that doesn't invalidate the older types of play, and many (like myself) will still want to stick with the old ways, much like many gamers still enjoy those old 2D games. That doesn't mean we are dismissing the new way, or that we are condemning those who follow it. We're just following a path we've loved for a long time. There's no rule that says one can only exist at the expense of the other.

So, I hope that we can agree to disagree peacefully on this.

(Whew, that went on for awhile... sorry for the novel, guys! )

Re: Talking Point: Sony's PlayStation VR Launch Adds Pressure to Nintendo's Holiday - and Perhaps NX - Plans

Philo

Health issues aside, I pretty much have no interest at all in VR anyway, at least not in a gaming sense. From what I can tell, the whole point is to immerse yourself first-person style into an evironment or in the shoes of a character, and I don't really think that's my cup of tea. I've always been one who enjoys experiencing a game or story through watching an actual character experience it, rather than trying to forcibly insert myself in their position. I mean, they go through some seriously demanding stuff, and I never really liked even having to swing the Wii remote to simulate swordplay... how in the world would it be better to have to, say, play a football game in full immersion? There's no way that could be done without exhausting you, and I don't think that's the point of video games. And if we're talking about using buttons for movement and such and only being immersed visually, that would only cause some seriously weird disconnection. Pretty much the only way it could be done is with very specific design, as @kirk mentioned, that avoids certain movements, and that would severely limit what could be done with it.

In other words, I don't believe VR could do the kinds of games I and some others prefer to play, the kind of games being made now and especially on Nintendo systems. Honestly though, I admit it might be very interesting for more relaxed applications, like touring virtual worlds or even interacting with virtual characters... but I don't think it's a good fit for traditional gaming, and certainly will not replace it at any point. Maybe someday it could be its own new kind of medium... they just need to stop trying to apply the tech to existing mediums, and create unique experiences that play to its strengths.

Re: Star Fox Zero Will Include An Invincible Mode For Inexperienced Players

Philo

You know what's really odd? I know a few people that absolutely cannot stand actually expending effort to develop skill in a game (or give up the minute things get even a little difficult), but when I tell them a game has a feature like this, they say things like "well that's lame. Then what's the point?". It seems people are never satisfied unless a game matches EXACTLY their level of skill, regardless of how impossible it is for that to happen 99% of the time. It really bothers me sometimes how little some people care about improving themselves, even if it's just for a game... :/

Re: Soapbox: It's too Early to Judge Paper Mario: Color Splash

Philo

There isn't much for me to say that hasn't been said... but I'll at least say that I'm in the camp that is a fan of the first two games, and is skeptical of this one. I also agree that the sudden random announcement and brevity of the trailer is concerning; when a handheld sequel to a Kirby game (which I am actually excited for) is the big final announcement instead of a console game in a series starring Mario, you know there's a problem there. The question is, if they have so little faith in it, why even expend the resources to make it? As we've seen with Amiibo Festival and to some extent most recent Sonic games, cranking out half-arsed sequels and spinoffs to fill release gaps does more harm to a brand than good. They'd better be preparing some incredible stuff on NX if they're going to risk the credibility of their IPs so frivolously, especially when they're planning to leverage those IP with other Ventures than games...

On a more positive note, some hope for original PM fans: there actually is a toad in the trailer who isn't red, and who's got at least a slightly unique outfit. Not quite TTYD-level stuff, but more than anything in SS, at least...

Re: Poll: Did the Wii U and 3DS Nintendo Direct Kickstart 2016?

Philo

Really happy about Rhythm Heaven. I was a bit worried after Fever didn't see as much success as the first, so I'm very relieved to see it come westward. Also happy about Kirby, though I am somewhat bummed they're reusing RTDL's engine AGAIN. What happened to changing things up like with Dreamland 3 or K64? Still, more Kirby is never a bad thing. And I am totally buying that waddle dee amiibo!

Also, to @JaxonH, you may not have asked me, but I'll throw my two cents in about Sticker Star. For me, it wasn't even so much about the lack of RPG elements as it was the removal of pretty much any and all personality. I actually liked Super Paper Mario, mainly because it at least kept that PM spirit; Original, interesting characters, creative locales, crazy fun story... all the things PM meant to me. Sticker Star had none of that, and it appears that Color Splash won't either. Hence why myself and many others are disappointed. Though I suppose some are probably being a bit more harsh than just 'disappointment...

edit: @Yorumi Haha! That image is perfect. Exactly what I was talking about.

Re: Video: Eiji Aonuma and Colleagues Reflect on Development of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Philo

I don't remember being all that excited when TP was announced that e3... Certainly not to the level everyone else was. As a WW fan, I actually was kinda disappointed with the new style. I'm probably in the minority on this, but I wanted them to continue the WW style. Thankfully, Zelda U has, imo, nailed the balanced between realistic and cartoonish. Now THAT was an announcement I was excited about.

Re: Jakks Pacific Re-Emphasizes Plan for 'New and Exciting' World of Nintendo Toys

Philo

I've bought a few of their toys. An Olimar, Wind Waker Ganondorf (didn't get his amiibo 'cause I don't like TP's design ), and most recently a 6 inch giant shy guy that came with a propeller accessory to turn him into a fly guy. I think they're not too bad for the price; the Ganondorf one especially looks good.

As for other figures I'd want... Kirby. Not nearly enough Kirby stuff available in the US. Had to import what little I have from Japan... yes, I am that big of a Kirby fan.

More Pikmin figures would also be welcome.

Re: Review: Alcahest (SNES)

Philo

An action RPG from HAL? And well done to boot?

I am all over this. Too bad it sounds like I might have to do something... not precisely legal to get to play it. I felt uneasy enough doing what I did to play Mother 3 in english...

Re: Mistwalker and Silicon Studio Are Teaming Up on a New Game

Philo

Mmmm... not so sure I'm all that interested. I wasn't too big on Last Story (though it did eventually get its hooks into me), and I never did play the Bravely games. I'm starting to angle away from traditional turn-based RPGs; they tend to drag a bit too much for me nowadays. If it was an action-based RPG like Last Story though, I might be persuaded to give it a shot. Of course, it'll have to actually come to a Nintendo system first, and who knows if that'll happen... though I guess both of those studios do have a decent relationship with Ninty, so I suppose it should be pretty likely. Guess we'll have to wait and see...

Also, I'm not so sold on that artwork. It looks fine as a piece of standalone art, but as an actual character design it's a bit overly complex. He looks like he could barely move in that getup...
