Re: Editorial: Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from All at Nintendo Life

Philo

Well said, Thomas! That was a very positive, encouraging message for what has sometimes been a rather rough year for me (and surely others.) I hope everyone on this site reads this, and maybe some of that toxicity rampant on here and the Internet at large will be neutralized be the sweetness of it all.

Happy Holidays to you all, Nintendo fans!

Re: A Special Kirby 25th Anniversary Broadcast Will Air Tomorrow in Japan

Philo

@AlexSora89

Lol, no that about covers it... when you list it out like that, it really makes me remember why I love the Kirby series. There's just so much awesome stuff throughout it's 25 years... it'd be impossible to cram it all in one game. At least, not without losing the one thing you didn't list: Kirby's trademark simplicity. As much as I wish the series could be as mind-bendingly complex as Xenoblade chronicles X, the simplicity with that light touch of something more (like the underlying mythos Hal's been slowly simmering in the background) is the whole reason I keep playing. One thing's for sure though, Hal DEFINITELY knows how to balance the old with the new, if PR is any indication. We're in good hands as long as they're in control of Kirby.

Re: A Special Kirby 25th Anniversary Broadcast Will Air Tomorrow in Japan

Philo

@AlexSora89

Put together, I believe you're right about TD and PR: they are just about the perfect specimen of the traditional Kirby formula (as in, platforming and so on). Honestly, I'm not sure where else they can go with that, unless they somehow find a way to work in dreamland series style gameplay, like combining powers. Now THAT would be a monster of a game, lol.

The fighting/beat 'em up genre formula I'm hoping for would be more like a spin-off game, I suppose. I mean, Kirby's got tons of spin-offs already, and has a game in nearly every genre at this point; the only ones missing are RPG and Fighting, both of which I believe could be done very well. And I think Hal knows this too, considering the mini games we've gotten recently. Like I said, it's all just a matter of time.

Whatever the next game will be though, I'm definitely excited to play it!

Re: A Special Kirby 25th Anniversary Broadcast Will Air Tomorrow in Japan

Philo

@AlexSora89

In a word... yes. All of my yes.

I don't think enough people realize how perfect Kirby is for a fighting game like this, with the scorechasing element and so forth. The abilities, the bosses... all of Kirby has been building for something like this. There's more than enough material to make a full game from the arena, exactly as you have laid it out.

It will happen someday, mark my words. It's just a matter of time...

Re: A Special Kirby 25th Anniversary Broadcast Will Air Tomorrow in Japan

Philo

@AlexSora89

"I would be all for a "best of" edition of all the bosses in the series. Marx, Dark Matter, Queen Sectonia, Galacta Knight, Zero Two, alongside the standard bosses from these guys' respective games (especially Computer Virus, a perfect fit for Kirby Clash), in the same game? Heeeeeeeeeeeere's my wallet, Ninty."

Exactly! This is my dream Kirby game, right here. Usually the arena ends up being my favorite part of each game anyway. And Kirby's director DOES love bosses... I've always thought they should just make a whole game based on the arena, with as many bosses and abilities as possible, and a vs. Battle mode like Kirby Fighters to round the whole thing out. It could be a HUGE hit on Switch if done right, which I have every confidence Hal could do!

Re: Yooka-Laylee Rattles Away From Wii U Release

Philo

So, found this on the Wii U backer faq playtonic sent out...

"All affected Wii U backers can choose another platform to receive a digital copy of Yooka-Laylee for, at the significant Kickstarter discount of more than 50% on the retail cost (£15 vs. £35). Wii U backers can also choose to wait for updates on the Nintendo Switch early next year."

Earlier in the faq, though, it claims backers can switch platforms for free. Just what is going on here?

Re: Random: Fan Discovers New Way to Instantly Kill a Boss in Wind Waker

Philo

Ha, neat. This is why zelda is so amazing... endless secrets to discover, even years later. Imagine how many BotW will provide...

On a side note, I always loved the name Kalle Demos... definitely one of the cooler boss names in the series, right up there with Kholdstare and Vitreous. It's so exotic!

Re: Editorial: Rediscovering the Gems of the Wii U Library

Philo

@ThomasBW84

You are not alone in your style of replying games, good sir. Believe it or not, I've completed all three checklists in Kirby Air Ride at least twice over since it was released, deleting my saves each time on purpose. That's the best way to enjoy that game, if you don't know anyone else who would play it with you.

Re: EA's Peter Moore: We've Never Said We Won't Develop For Nintendo

Philo

"If you asked that question to them they'd say they have to launch with first-party software first - that's where the first dev kits go."

Really...? But I'm pretty sure Sega already has some development kits based on the fact that they're developing the new sonic game for it, and there's a good possibility Sqeenix does too, maybe even Namco and Capcom. If Nintendo cared to have EA's support, they would have given them kits by now, surely.

I guess they're not too great of friends after all, huh...

Re: Rain Games On Teslagrad's Success and World to the West

Philo

Teslagrad was one of the first indie games I ever bought on Wii U. It intrigued me... I guess you could say I thought it had a... magnetic sort of charm.

...But seriously, I very much enjoyed that game, and now I'm looking forward to its sequel. I also love how Rain Games seems committed to fleshing out this universe. I really appreciate that kind of passion they have toward their creations.

Re: Feature: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is Nintendo's Boldest Step Into Contemporary Game Design

Philo

I suppose I would be one of those die-hard, veteran Zelda fans... and to me, the best part of Zelda has always been that there is an interesting, linear path to follow, which is the main goal of the games, while there is also an assortment of sidequests and "messing around" kind of stuff there for you to dip into every now and then when the mood strikes you. That's why I didn't really like Skyward Sword; it was pretty much all linearity, with barely anything else on the side. This game, however, appears to be the exact opposite: almost completely side stuff, and very little linearity. Some will probably say that's a great thing, but... I'm not so sure.

I feel like it's all about balance. Too much linearity and it feels restrictive... but too much freedom, and it starts to feel less cohesive. I felt most of the older Zeldas had that balance down pretty well (Ocarina did it perfectly, which is why it's so highly regarded), but this one, I don't know. It doesn't surprise me that more freedom and less direction seems to be the norm right now, given how popular time-wasting Internet stuff is, but I feel like it isn't necessarily a good thing. You still need SOME focus and direction, otherwise everything would be chaos. Thus, I'm gonna stay a bit cautious about this one...

That being said, it still looks gorgeous, and it's not like I'll be forced to partake in all that pointless sandboxy stuff. I'm with you, @ThomasBW84 ; I like my objective-based games, and I'll be playing this one as close to the old ways as possible.

Re: Upcoming Tetris Movie is Confirmed to be the First in a Trilogy

Philo

As I see it, this can go one of two ways:

A: This is the biggest prank in the history of the film industry, and they're hyping it up to pull a massive 'gotcha!' And reveal a comedy instead, or
B: They actually have an amazing idea, but it will hardly have any semblance to the actual game of tetris, and is based more on the philosophy behind it (as he said, 'making order out of chaos').

Time will tell which one it is...

Re: New Sonic the Hedgehog Game is Coming in 2017

Philo

@BLPs
Even better, then. I was just going off release dates. Either way, It's good to see them taking so long to really fine-tune everything, if indeed that's what they're doing (I really hope so!).

Now all that's left is to see if it comes to Nintendo platforms...

Re: New Sonic the Hedgehog Game is Coming in 2017

Philo

Hmm... well, the last main Sonic game that Sonic Team themselves produced was Lost World back in 2013, so by the time this new game comes out, it will have had a possible 3~4 years of development... from what I've read, that's the longest gap between main titles since Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic Adventure.

Hopefully this is a good sign...

Re: Editorial: Mighty No. 9 and High Profile Disappointments Don't Invalidate Crowdfunding

Philo

Only ever backed one game: Yooka-Laylee. And that was an easy decision; they are essentially Rare, not to mention they already had a short demo of the game put together, and it looked amazing, unlike a certain other famous developer... it was extremely obvious that it would end up becoming what it is now. Or it was to me, at least. I owe most of the best games of my childhood to those guys, so there was no doubt in my mind it would turn out amazing. It's like if Nintendo itself asked for help funding a project.

Re: Yacht Club Games Provides Update on Future Campaigns and Content

Philo

Been waiting for an update on this! looks like Specter Knight's campaign is shaping up really well. Very interested in what his story will be... I'm thinking the fact that his health is labeled as 'will' probably has something to do with it.

I didn't back this game when the kickstarter came around (didn't even know about kickstarter back then, lol) but I really wish I had. At least I was able to give YC money anyway by buying it outright. Even then, I still feel like I should be giving them more for this dlc.

Re: Even If It’s Not Perfect, It’s Better Than Nothing, Says Mighty No. 9 Creator Keiji Inafune

Philo

@Snow-Dust

"And let's not forget guys, he only did concept art for megaman. The real megaman creator is Akira Kitamura."

Makes sense. The concept art is just about the only thing that was good about this game at all...

But seriously, all I could think about while reading Inafune's comments was "shut up, shut up, you're making it worse...". I hope he invested that 4 mil wisely, 'cause he's gonna have a tough time getting anyone to fund him now...

Re: Feature: Our Top 20 Highest Rated 3DS eShop Games

Philo

@Kmno

Yeah, I can understand where you come from about Gunvolt. If you're not into replaying a stage a thousand times over to chase scores, it's mechanics can feel a bit sluggish. Once you get it down, though, it's pretty exhilarating.

Oh, and to those who haven't played Nightsky, I highly recommend it. Very nice looking, nice playing game. It's spot on this list is actually pretty understandable.

Re: Writer Of Divisive New Mega Man Cartoon Asks Fans To Give It A Chance

Philo

@AlexSora89

But Ben 10 looked way better than this... sure, it was blocky and simplistic like this is to a point, but I swear it looked better. It's mostly just that face... everything else looks fine. Maybe it's just the angle? I can't put my finger on it exactly, but something's off. Either way, I don't recall ever being as repulsed by anything else Man of Action has made...

Re: Random: Store Shelves Appear To Be Filling With Pre-Owned Copies Of Star Fox Zero

Philo

So... not reading 300+ pages, but there's something I was wondering. Does SFZ have online leaderboards for stage scores? The review didn't mention it, and I don't remember hearing about it. If it did though, I feel like a healthy competitive score chasing scene could've increased replay value. At least, that's what kept me playing Sin & Punishment till they shut down the servers. I feel like every rail shooter is primarily about scoring, so if SFZ doesn't have leaderboards (or won't get them ever) then I wouldn't be surprised if this keeps happening, especially considering it lacks an online versus mode.

Re: Review: Kirby: Planet Robobot (3DS)

Philo

Happy to see this get such a good score. As I expected, the mech sections are better than the hypernova ones; that's Triple Deluxe's one major flaw corrected. All is right with the world.

Come on June 10th!

Re: Nintendo Publishes Part Two of the Miyamoto and Hayashi Star Fox Zero Interview

Philo

@Neon_Blues

Well then, I think we can agree to disagree. Like I said, many games don't have or need that character depth, and they definitely have their place. I totally agree that Mario (the main series, at least) shouldn't have story, for example. But as you ask to have the simpler games left as they are, I also ask that the more complex ones be left alone as well. For gaming to be considered as any kind of serious medium, it has to have content that hits both targets and appeals to anyone. Having one type does not have to mean excluding the other. Nintendo is more than capable of providing both; The important thing is that they identify which series has what strengths, and not try to change them into something they're not. And that works both ways, of course. I mean, I'm pretty positive I'd never buy a Kirby game with a story as intricate as an rpg... that would just be weird, haha.

Re: Nintendo Publishes Part Two of the Miyamoto and Hayashi Star Fox Zero Interview

Philo

@Neon_Blues

I'm not asking for games to take everything else over. But they do have a lot of potential for creating a world around you, full of all kinds personality and character, all made more immersing thanks to gameplay. While that gameplay is definitely the main attraction, when you make a game focused on just that, you lose a lot in the process. Think of what Splatoon would have been like if they had just left it as cubes of tofu spraying ink; would it still be playable? Sure, but it wouldn't be near as interesting without the culture and lore they injected into it.

That's what Miyamoto did to Sticker Star; told them to leave the personality out of it, and it suffered, because half of what makes PM so great is its personality. It wouldn't have bothered me so much had PM not had that to begin with, but it did, and he stripped that away in favor of a focus on game mechanics. All while series of his own (like Pikmin) got to keep their character. And even then, Pikmin 3 has less lore in it than 2. It just feels like we keep moving backward.

So basically, simpler games are fine, and certainly have their place; just don't backpedal on the series that are trying to make something bigger. That's all I ask.

Re: Editorial: Fire Emblem Fates and Code Name S.T.E.A.M., Two Very Different Intelligent Systems Ventures

Philo

I really did like CNS... it dragged a bunch, but overall I felt it was a neat new concept and universe to explore. I fear that now, since it bombed, IS will be forced into churning out nothing but mindless iterations of Fire Emblem at the same rate and volume as Pokemon titles. I guess that's fine for some, but me personally... I'm burnt out on FE. Just one game can last for hundreds of hours; with Fates there were THREE. That just seems like overkill, especially after playing Awakening only a few years before. I'd much rather have more CNS, or something entirely new before more FE. I mean, you wouldn't want to eat only ice cream every day, right? Let's switch it up a bit...

Re: Nintendo Publishes Part Two of the Miyamoto and Hayashi Star Fox Zero Interview

Philo

Haven't played Zero yet, so I can't really bash Miyamoto for messing it up... however, I will never really forget the damage he did to the Paper Mario series. I'm not gonna say he should retire just yet (Pikmin is still pretty good, and he's all over that), but I would request that he, regardless of his role as original creator, please keep his hands out of series that don't have anything wrong with them as they are. I like simplicity as much as the next guy, but he seems to be determined to make everything, even series that didn't start that way, as bare bones as possible. If left to him, the entire medium of gaming would never be able to evolve past anything but pleasant distractions and nothing more. What's worse is that I swear he wasn't always that way. I wonder what caused that change of heart... age, maybe? Who knows... :/

Re: Video: Nintendo Aims to Get Down With the Kids in Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Series

Philo

@JaxonH

Exactly. As terrible as these situations are, there's really no avoiding them. All we can really do is bear with it, and be thankful for the games that don't get put through this. If that bothers anyone, then it is perfectly fine to express that opinion somewhere where Nintendo might see it; but please, just make your grievences civil and intelligent, everyone. That's the only real way to make a difference.

Re: Video: Nintendo Aims to Get Down With the Kids in Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Series

Philo

@Ralizah

In regards to the first part of your post, I feel that it has more to do with Nintendo's image, and how it looks when they, a company known for games marketed for everyone, put (or leave) content in a game that is regarded by the general masses as NOT for everyone. Just having more 'mature' games at all is a stretch for them, and typically comes off as being done to appease those who grew up with them and now want those kind of experiences, which in and of itself is a very small number of people. True, it could be argued that in that case it wouldn't hurt to leave the mature stuff in, and might even boost sales a bit for THAT game, but they have consider if it's worth the possible fallout from parents of the kids that are their primary audience passing on buying their other games after they see what other stuff Nintendo is publishing. There might only be a small possibility of loss in that scenario, but I'd be willing to bet it would potentially be more than the marginal profits from those who would only buy a game if it left the suggestive stuff in. It's a ridiculously fine line to walk, but that's PR and business; you have to explore every possibility.

Don't get me wrong, though. I'm not in favor of censorship. Just being realistic. What other explanation is there for their actions?

Edit: And I agree with you on Alex's video. Usually I find him funny, but that just felt distasteful. Shame on you, Alex...

Re: Video: Nintendo Aims to Get Down With the Kids in Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Series

Philo

@DiscoGentleman

Pretty much this, unfortunately. Alot of people just don't realize how much corporations like- ahem-Nintendo are only ever interested in their bottom line. Sometimes that works in harmony with artistic integrity, but as art is usually all over the place, most often it doesn't. The unfortunate side effect is that people who appreciate less universally appealing stuff like this game (original form or otherwise) feel outed, like they're being personally attacked and ignored when a company tries to aim for the majority instead. It's a harsh reality, but fans of this stuff are in the vast minority; even gaming in and of itself is still considered niche, so this is even more so. People just have to accept that, be comfortable with themselves and what they like, and stop taking every little corporate decision like a personal affront.

Edit: oh, and just to clarify, I myself am a fan of some very niche things as well, so I've been in that minority. I just don't think I'm owed anything by a multi-billion dollar company.

Re: Talking Point: Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem Could Provide Nintendo's Mobile Breakthrough With Fans

Philo

What concerns me the most about putting IPs like this on smartphones is that I feel it might dilute the excellence of them. Basically, that it'll cheapen them and water it all down for mass appeal. That's already started to happen to a point with some franchises, thanks to spin-off games like Tri-force Heroes and so forth muddying the waters of established and much loved series, all in the name of producing filler titles or aiming for new audiences that won't value them anyway. I mean, I get that it's necessary to bring in more revenue, but it just feels like selling out. Maybe that's just the jaded thinking of an older player wishing for the past, I don't know... It just feels everything is taken for granted nowadays. :/

Re: Preview: Mechanised Cuteness in Kirby: Planet Robobot

Philo

@NintyFan

Got mine preordered too, anlong with the Waddle Dee and Meta Knight amiibos. very much looking forward to this!

Also, I wasn't aware that Triple Deluxe was underrated... I remember it getting generally good reviews, moreso than the typical mainline Kirby titles. I personally liked it just a bit better than RtDL, my only real complaint being the same one mentioned above, about Hypernova being pretty meh. Thankfully, Robobot looks to be fixing that one issue, so it's probably gonna be even more amazing. Here's hoping!

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles Looks Set For The North American Wii U Virtual Console

Philo

I still have no idea how I managed to get my hands on the original release of this game without any problems... I guess I preordered it, though I don't remember doing that. I just remember thinking, 'what? people had trouble getting Xenoblade?' when I first heard it was rare. it's weird to think it's been so long that I can't remember fully... doesn't feel like it's been out that long, but I guess it's been like... 5 years or something? Yeesh, where has the time gone...

Anyway, glad to see more people get the chance to play this awesome game. better than X, in my opinion.

Re: Humble Friends of Nintendo Bundle Offers Games at a Huge Discount

@ALinkttPresent

Have fun, man. thankfully, I've got an external HDD for my Wii U, so I should have plenty of space for mine. Still gonna take forever to download, though, lol.

@iamDTS I think someone dropped one a few posts up. If it doesn't work, I do have one that I'm not particularly attached to. I own Shantae on Wii U and not 3DS, so I though I might use it, but I think it would prolly do more good for someone else.
