Ultimately this comes down to how the console business has always worked. 1 gamer buys 1 copy of a game. When they are done with it, they sell it or give it someone else. The publisher doesn’t care about that part of it. They just care about that first purchase.
The whole idea of whole households having multiple consoles and wanting to share games between them wasn’t really accounted for in the old days. And with digital, the industry still firmly believes in the “1 game for 1 gamer” mind set. Thus they all make it super annoying or impossible to share games with friends, like you can with various streaming subscriptions. Because it’s fundamentally opposite of how they want things to function.
I honestly think that’s why some companies are pushing so hard (like Microsoft) for game streaming to become useable. At that point, from a business sense, you can move on from the “1 game for 1 gamer” mindset while still keeping your profit margin.
I suspect 32 gig cards will turn up sooner or later. I doubt anything smaller than that will show up.
One thing is that a lot of this is influenced by the market price and availability of NAND storage chips, which Nintendo uses in the Switch cards for their capacity. At this point, the market has mostly standardized on 64 gigs for the smallest size. Chances are if you want something smaller than that, you’ve got to order them into production instead of just getting them off the shelf. I suspect Nintendo settled on 64 gig capacities right now because those are already in mass production and easier and cheaper to purchase. Other sizes probably requires special ordering.
So there’s a chance as the Switch 2 is more established Nintendo will get manufacturers to produce 32 gig capacity NAND at Switch 2 performance at a price Nintendo is willing to pay. But that’s just me speculating.
I’m not real sure why Nintendo couldn’t just allow Switch 1 cards for Switch 2 games where the load times wouldn’t be terrible. Same thing with the SD cards. They should have allowed the console to read the older SD cards at least for Switch 1 games. On PS5 you can play PS4 games from a USB hard drive but you can only store PS5 games. You have to move it to SSD storage to play it. Nintendo could have done the same thing.
Game key cards are dumb. I’ve said this numerous times. It gives you the worst points of both physical and digital. Only real thing going for it is that the game isn’t tied to your account so you can resell and trade the game with no issues.
But if you don’t do that, the key cards are really really stupid.
The PS5 uses UHD Blu Rays (essentially quad layer Blu Rays originally developed for 4K movie releases) with 100 gigs of storage. The Series X can also read UHD Blu Rays but Microsoft ships physical games in traditional dual layer 50Gig Blu-rays. Mainly because MS, until recently, was still fully supporting the Xbox One with physical game releases and the VCR XBONE can’t read UHD Blu Rays. Matter of fact, it wasn’t uncommon (I know Elden Ring was released like this) for the XBOX One version of a game to be on the disc, while the disc acted as a key for the Series versions of the game. The later revisions of the XBONE can read UHDs. But Microsoft has mostly depreciated physical media on its platforms. Most games are essentially keys for the download at this point.
On PS5, most games are still fully shipped on the disc. That’s not applicable to all games; call of duty games are literally disc keys. And chances are this is going to change over time since Sony is aiming to depreciate physical media for the PlayStation family, but have been slower at it than Microsoft because Microsoft’s user base got very tied to Gamepass very fast. Sony’s PS Plus Extra has had a much smaller impact on consumer spending habits. But I suspect the PS6 will either be digital only or physical games will all be disc keys.
One interesting thing about Blu Ray though is that technically you can layer it 16 times in the specification. They’ve prototyped 400 gig Blu Rays before in the past. But there’s not really a demand for a disc with that kind of storage space so they haven’t been produced.
I doubt it will be that quick. More than likely they’ve been working on two games at once and I suspect the next 3D Mario (which will certainly be based on the loop introduced in Bowser’s Fury) is probably 3 or 4 years away at this point.
People used to blame the actors for how awkward the Star Wars Prequels were. (Which their reception has changed just to how much a dumpster fire the Disney Sequels were, but I lived through all 3 prequels being released and I remember the reception) and people tried to blame the actors. I’d always point out that no one could make some of Luca’s writing sound natural.
Like the “I’m haunted by the kiss you should never have given me” line from Episode 2. No actor, not even someone like Gary Oldman, could have made that sound natural. That wasn’t Hayden’s fault. It was Lucas’.
I’ve only played one Front Mission game. Front Mission 4 on PS2. I fell in love with that game, especially its political intrigue and its super interesting world building that is like a much deeper version of Strangereal from Ace Combat (basically it’s very similar to our world, and even uses our countries, but the history is different and that’s explained in the game’s lore).
I’ve always wanted to try the other games in the franchise. But man SE is really bombing these remakes. I’ve heard bad things about 1 and 2 as well which is why I never picked them up. I hope they don’t bomb 4 whenever they decide to remake it.
To be fair, 4 actually holds up to modern standards. If they just upressed the assets (especially the 2D art assets) it would still be a pretty game by today’s standards.
It looks good. But I’m not 100% sure if I’ll get it. Chances are I’ll wait to grab after I finish Metroid Prime 4. Basically save it for a real dry spell.
Having played both, it’s not quite PS5. But it’s surpassingly close. It looks a lot like the Series S version of the game, even has better image quality than that version thanks to DLSS being better at doing its job than FSR 2. Only area I really noticed a significant downgrade over the PS5 version is that pedestrian and car density is set really low. It’s similar to the PS4 version in that regard.
Frankly it’s an extremely well optimized port. They played to the Switch 2’s strengths with the port. It’s not quite PS5 version levels, but when you’re playing it you don’t really notice. Outside of the pedestrian and car traffic. That’s the only place where you really notice the difference.
Trust me I get it. They’ve gotten plenty of stuff wrong over the years and I personally think, despite being a huge fan of DF and their mission, their Switch 2 coverage had some flaws and they jumped the gun too much on several occasions. Biggest thing being I really think they underestimated its performance.
Dude it was John and Oliver who did this little thing. Those two dudes are Nintendo heads. Oliver’s room is literally designed to look like a GameCube.
You’re thinking about Alex. Who is a downer on Nintendo because he’s a downer on anything that isn’t a 3000 dollar gaming rig.
Rich is… well he’s a grumpy old man. But he’s also a veteran of Sega (he was an editor for Sega Saturn magazine back in the 90s) but he doesn’t really hate anything.
I’ll say this. SMBII: Yoshi’s Island isn’t just the best Yoshi game to me, imo. It’s the best game Nintendo ever made in my opinion, only rivaled in its brilliance by Super Mario Bros 3.
With that said, the rest of the franchise? Real hit or miss.
It’s got a lot of what I like to call Euro-jank in both the story presentation and the game play. I happen to like Euro-Jank story presentation so I like how it’s told. But some who are more used to how Japanese and American developers present their stories might find it more obtuse than it needs to be. As for the Euro Jank gameplay… Stalker taught me a long time ago how to put up with it. Although I admit it’s the one game I own on Switch 2 where I just can’t comfortably use it in pure handheld mode. I got to table top it with my pro controller.
It’s one of the few examples of a game that completely repaired its first time image. Most of the time a game that launches that bad stays that bad in reception for ever. But Cyberpunk is an example of a great game that was buried under a mountain of technical problems. Once that was fixed and they fleshed it out a bit more with content updates over the years, the great foundation came shining out. It’s gaming’s best redemption story.
I’ve cam in first on Knockout online once. Just once. I got insanely lucky honestly. I was in second but the item box gave me a gold mushroom. So I was able to blast by the 1st place player at the last possible second.
I’ve had a few podium finishers though. One thing I learned playing it is that being in first is detrimental to your success until arguably the last cycle. You really want to stay in 2nd or 3rd for most of the race just to how many blue shells are gunning for the #1 spot most of the time.
Some people are just insanely stupid. I don’t even cuss around my kid. And he’s only a year and half old. And I have the mouth of sailor. But I can control myself around him. It’s crazy seeing people who just act like total animals in front of their kids. Especially when their kids are at influential ages and will think that sort of behavior is normal and perfectly acceptable.
Yeah same here. I’ve went all in on Switch since I had my son. I’ve still got my PS5 but hopefully I’ll have it sold soon. I just never use it. Switch (and now Switch 2) fits my lifestyle so much better.
IMO, keycards seem dumb and I won’t be buying any. I have no issue with digital; I was 90% digital on Switch 1 and I’m sure I’ll be heavily digital with Switch 2.
