Yeah I hope so. That said, I hope they add an option to only charge for 80%. In terms of temperature variations and max battery longevity before they degrade, 20-80% capacity is the sweet spot. Charging above 80 usually raises the temperature, which is why all devices dramatically throttle down from the charger from 80-100%.
For my use case, 20 to 80 would serve fine for my daily use case, which is normally docked during the day and handheld at night next to a charger. And I could always charge to 100% in those rare times (like long car rides where I’m not driving, which is rare) to max my life off the charger.
Mine came with MKWT. And I have the NSO Expansion Pass so I downloaded the upgrade for Tears of the Kingdom.
But I haven’t bought any native software for the system yet. Plan is to wait for the first games to go on sell and then get a few. I’m playing alot of Switch OG games I never finished right now in addition to Mario Kart.
Yeah people don’t understand that you haven’t needed to calibrate lithium batteries since like 2006.
This thing just has bad battery life. It isn’t the end of the world for those who lived with the OG Phat PSP or even the Game Gear back in the day.
As for why it’s bad, I suspect the APU is the main culprit. The T239 is a bit of a power hog compared to the Tegra X1 the OG Switch had, considering it was originally designed for car infotainment systems where power draw wasn’t a real concern. And it’s using an 8 nanometer production process so it’s going to draw more power than a brand new 4 nanometer chip anyway.
The APU is the combined CPU/GPU. Unlike older consoles (like the 360 and PS3) that had a separate CPU/GPU on the board, modern consoles have them integrated into one unit.
Nanometer refers to the production scale and transistor density of the die. A lower number means that more transistors are fitted into a smaller space and are more efficient. The PS5 Pro, for example, is about a 5 nanometer process for its APU. The Switch 2, according to reports (not confirmed by Nintendo, but strongly hinted at by nVidia) is using an 8 nanometer process for its APU. Basically it’s cheaper and generally more reliable since 8NM chip dies have been in production for a long time now so all the kinks have been worked out. But it’s less efficient and draws more power.
I doubt it would have helped that much. I suspect the new8 nanometer T239 APU is the real culprit for why the battery life is bad, very similar to a PSP Phat.
About two hours from 86% or so (I have it set not to charge to 100%). Not good, but having lived with a PSP Phat for years back in the day I’m pretty used to it.
The Switch 2. Specifically Mario Kart World Tour (playing online matches and attempting to get trophies for all the Knockout Tour cups in single player; already got trophies for all the Grand Prix cups), Pokémon Scarlet post game (hugely improved), Tears of the Kingdom (60 FPS is amazing for that game), Fire Emblem Sacred Stones on GBA NSO.
The TV early 00s edit of Saving Private Ryan is hilarious too. Nowadays when it’s shown on tv it’s usually uncensored, they just put a warning before it opens. But back in the early 00s it got censored just like Robocop did.
For real. Most people these days would have never survived a Halo 3 or Modern Warfare lobby back in the day. I learned all sorts of racial slurs from being called them constantly when I popped people in the noggin with sniper rifles.
Alright now that I’ve had a day with it I’ll give my summary points.
Positives
1. The build quality is fantastic. It’s not quite Apple good, but it’s a huge improvement over the OG Switch build quality. Feels like a premium electronic instead of a toy.
2. The screen is fantastic for an LCD. It’s not an OLED no. But for those of us who never owned a Switch OLED it’s a giant leap forward.
3. The Joy Con 2 is a giant improvement in terms of comfort and usability. Wish the left one had a DPAD but I know why they set up like they did. The analog sticks are actually useable this time.
4. The kick stand is great and I finally feel comfortable using table top mode (which is important for one of the negatives I’ll mention)
5. The magnetic connection is a giant improvement over the rail system. It’s super solid.
6. OS allows you to manipulate the battery behavior. Should increase its longevity.
7. The resolution improvements is a godsend for 4K TVs, even on games that don’t run at native 4K.
8. I only tried Soul Calibur II on the GameCube NSO app, but it looks and runs great.
Cons
1. The battery life is pretty whack. Mario Kart only lasted about two hours before the low battery warning came on from a near full charge. And even playing the Game Boy Advance NSO app (started a playthrough of Sacred Stones, one of my favorite GBA games from back in the day) drains the battery surprisingly fast. I’ll definitely need to invest in another portable battery for this thing. Playing in table top with the top USB-C port is a god send.
2. The OS feels super samey as Switch OG. Even with the resolution bump. They didn’t really add anything to it.
3. You can’t turn it on with an OG Pro Controller. And that just screams laziness on Nintendo’s part. It wouldn’t have been that hard to update the firmware on the controller so it would work.
Overall, I really like this thing. The only big complaint I have is the battery life. But I also owned a Phat PSP back in the day and it’s about the same as that handheld was.
But if you owned a Phat PSP like I did, it’s shockingly similar when you compare it to the PSP on its original small battery and playing UMD games or movies. Only time that thing got decent battery life for me was when I was listening to music on it with the screen turned off. If I played a game like Untold HLegends or Burnout on it, it would last maybe 2 and a half hours. Same with Switch 2 and Mario Kart.
@OrtadragoonX this is the fourth console I’ve bought on day one. I got a Dreamcast and a GameCube on their respective launch days long ago. And I got a PS5 on launch day.
Biggest improvement? Thing is way better built than the original Switch. I love the magnetic connection for the Joy Cons.
Plus the new Joy Cons are actually usable for me. I had to get Hori Split Pad Pros for my OG Switch because the OG Joy Cons were so small. It’s not super comfortable but definitely usable and I have no desire to replace them.
I did the exact same thing. I didn’t even plan on getting one but I went to Wal Mart early this morning to pick up some other stuff and they had 4 Mario Kart bundles in stock. So I just got one since I figured it’ll be a long time before I get another chance.
The only complaint I have about mine is that the battery life is… Meh at best. Like a 1st generation Vita or Phat PSP playing UMDs. Still it’s better than my Mariko Switch cause that thing was six years old with its original battery.
IMO, it’s got plenty of internal storage for me for the next few months. When the 512 or 1tb Express cards come down in price I’ll get one of those then.
Got to say I’m enjoying it so far. I didn’t plan on getting a Switch 2 on launch day but I just so happened to go to the local wal mart early as hell this morning for something else. And they had four MKWT bundles in stock. And I figured; why the hell not. Got to say I’m liking this thing so far. They mostly fixed all the nibbling issue my Switch Mariko had and the LCD screen is fantastic. I never had an OLED Switch so it wasn’t a downgrade for me, just an upgrade.
I don’t think it’ll touch Switch 1 sales. The Switch 1 had too many good things that are more or less once in a generation events going for it. Being basically the official console of COVID lockdown being the biggest one while already being established by that point.
I think Switch 2 can cross 100 million. But it won’t get to 150 million.
I sunk hundreds of hours into it and never technically beat it. I never finished story mode because the final race on story might as well say “you can’t do this, you need the reflexes of a God to get through this”
The hidden circuit in Grand Prix was also basically unbeatable too. I loved every second of that game though. Favorite racing game of all time.
That kind of breaks the meta for that game. Roll canceling is like the most important thing for characters like Blanka. It’s why he’s so high on the tier list because of how you can abuse it.
I think with BOTW the genius wasn’t the world itself, which was fairly bland when I look back on my play through of it back in 2020 shortly after I got my Switch. But rather, the genius of that game was the way it allowed you to traverse it. There were a ton of good traversal options that just made sense and were perfectly balanced.
I also remember loving how it didn’t hold your hand at all.
Tears of the Kingdom brillantly expanded on it, but I haven’t beat it yet. I’ve decided to put it on hold until I get a Switch 2 to continue my playthrough at the increased framerate.
Super Thunder Blade was bad when I was a kid and it’s still bad now. None of the Genesis Super Scaler conversions were very good. Impressive in trailers on tv when we were kids but horrible to play.
ESWAT is a classic. And Streets of Rage is still one of the best beat ‘em ups ever made. Certainly the best soundtrack of any beat ‘em up.

It finally made a standard price (39.99 for the most part, although it jumped to 49.99 by the end of the generation) instead of that stupidity going on the N64, where some games like Resident Evil 2 costed almost twice as much as the game sitting next to it.
I mean that’s good. File sizes are perfectly manageable so far.
Unlike with my OG Switch, I’ll probably wait a year to get an SD Express card for it and just rely on internal memory. I just finished filling up my 256 gig card on my Switch, but that’s with a ton of games I don’t even play anymore loaded up on it. Just putting the games I want to play on the 256 gig internal memory would take up about 80 gigs on it for Switch 1 games. So not bad at all.
I vividly remember paying 79.99 for rogue squadron way back in 1999 on 64. 64 games were all over the place. That’s the reason I ended up with a way bigger collection of PlayStation one games they were half the price usually
Also if it goes on a sale reasonably quick I may pick up Cyberpunk and finally play that game. I was gonna a get it on PS5 but then I had the double whammy of kidney disease and then raising my son that sort of killed my ability to play home console games. I play my Switch only because I do my treatments at night and it’s portable.
If I get one for Christmas (that’s the current plan; going to sell my PS5 and Switch V2 to help pay for it) I’ll probably just get the Mario Kart bundle and just play Switch 1 games on it for a while, since I’ve got a bunch of Switch 1 games I need to finish. And Metroid Prime 4 whenever it’s out. That’s really the only game I want for it right now.
Yeah I don’t think that’s accurate. It’s more likely (based on the games I’ve seen so far) that it’s roughly equivalent to a low tier gaming rig. Which is fine anyway because most games aren’t even taking full advantage of low end hardware, much less the more powerful stuff.

Re: Video: Mario Kart World And Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Side-By-Side Graphics Comparison

A lot of it has to do with the ages involved. Gaming is way bigger now than when it was in the 90s. I grew up then and I vividly remember the insane prices of SNES and N64 games and how all over the place they were. That’s the reason the PS1 and Saturn adopting CDs was so important. It finally made a standard price (39.99 for the most part, although it jumped to 49.99 by the end of the generation) instead of that stupidity going on the N64, where some games like Resident Evil 2 costed almost twice as much as the game sitting next to it.
Re: Nintendo Switch 2 First-Party File Sizes Are Surprisingly Small
I mean that’s good. File sizes are perfectly manageable so far.
Unlike with my OG Switch, I’ll probably wait a year to get an SD Express card for it and just rely on internal memory. Just putting the games I want to play on the 256 gig internal memory would take up about 80 gigs on it for Switch 1 games. So not bad at all.

Re: Community: Which Switch 2 Games Are You Wishlisting?
If I get one for Christmas (that’s the current plan; going to sell my PS5 and Switch V2 to help pay for it) I’ll probably just get the Mario Kart bundle and just play Switch 1 games on it for a while, since I’ve got a bunch of Switch 1 games I need to finish. And Metroid Prime 4 whenever it’s out. That’s really the only game I want for it right now.
Re: Civilization VII Dev Likens Game's Switch 2 Graphical Performance To "Mid-Tier PC"
