Re: The Pokémon Franchise Has Now Shipped Over 480 Million Software Units

OrtadragoonX

I actually really enjoyed Scarlet. It’s the first Pokémon game I actually “finished” (finishing a Pokémon game for me means beating the main story and collecting (50% of the Pokédex) since Diamond way back in 2006.

That said my God that game is a bug infested mess that barely runs.

I hope that Gamefreak builds on Scarlet/violet and actually prioritize quality next time. They’ve got a good formula now that is entertaining. They just need to get it up to par in terms of quality.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Brand Momentum Has Been Flat Since 2018, Says Sony

OrtadragoonX

I’m a PS fan primarily but Sony is off their rockers with this.

Nintendo is at their second highest point in their history in terms of brand recognition. The only time they were arguably ahead of now in brand recognition was during the NES era, where they were really the only video game maker in town in most territories.

And realistically they are even more recognized now then they were back then in terms of total brand awareness.

Re: Soapbox: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Straight Up Fails In Just One Respect: Accessibility

@Clyde_Radcliffe

Ya know I always see this complaint but I don’t get it.

I see it as a positive. It forces me to get creative to kill enemies efficiently.

Plus with weapon fusing it’s kind of a moot point anyway. It increases both damage and weapon durability.

Plus the game gives you a million options to kill stuff without even using a weapon? Wanna know a great strategy? Shoot something in the head. Then use ultra hand to pick up a Boulder and drop it from max height on top of them.

Super efficient kill using only one arrow for low to mid level enemies.

Every developer should copy Naughty Dog’s approach to accessibility features.

The accessibility options in TLOU Part I will boggle your mind. Full color blind customization. Fully remappable controls. All toggle variations supported for each game function.

I don’t need to use any of it but my jaw still drops at how well Naughty Dog caters to disabled gamers. It’s the gold standard. And every other developer should copy it.

Re: Soapbox: Obstinate And Addictive - Playing Final Fantasy For The First Time In 2023

OrtadragoonX

A tip if you’re gonna play the NES version.

Red Mages are actually better than black mages for the vast majority of the game. This is because the INT stat is bugged and doesn’t reflect damage growth in spells and the all critical spell casting items. Since INT is bugged the Red Mage does equal damage to Black Mages even in the late game.

My optimal party is Warrior, Black Belt, Red Mage, White Mage. That’s how I always played the NES version. You could sub a second Warrior for the Black Belt and get similar returns on damage but the Black Belt’s secret is just how cheap it is to run. Once you hit level 10 you can run him naked for the rest of the game.

In the later versions of the game I usually run Warrior, Thief, Black Mage, White Mage. The Thief and Ninja both got huge buffs that make them more useful (the Ninja can cast Haste which is absolutely necessary for the optional dungeons in the PSP/GBA versions) and the INT stat is fixed so Black Mages tend to overpower Red Mages early in the game.

Re: Soapbox: If Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Isn’t Switch’s Swan Song, It Really Should Be

OrtadragoonX

@Paraka

Definitely.

There’s only a real handful of games that take advantage of the hardware fully. Some games push consoles to limits but they are few and far between.

I think Horizon Forbidden West pushed the PS4 as far as it could reasonably go while still being a stable experience. That was that team’s third full game for that hardware. They had learned it better than anyone else.

Re: Soapbox: If Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Isn’t Switch’s Swan Song, It Really Should Be

OrtadragoonX

@BodkinDQ

I think it’s about the right expectations for the hardware.

I’m a PlayStation fan first and foremost. But I also love Nintendo’s first party game lineup.

I like the power of my PS5 and the games it has. There’s some fantastic games on PS5. And more power never hurts anything. But I like seeing developers take advantage of whatever hardware is available.

And that’s why I love Nintendo’s 1st party games. They always leverage the hardware they are on. TOTK is a beautiful game that rivals any game on my PS5 in terms of the fun factor.

I think having graphical grunt is necessary. But it’s less about just how powerful the hardware is and more about how the developer leverages the hardware. Nintendo’s internal studios punch above their weight class on the Switch. And the game needs to be good in the first place.

And thankfully, between my PS5 and my Switch I have more than enough great games to even have time to play. So I use them in different ways. Right now I’m cracked out on Zelda. In June I’ll be picking up Diablo IV and Final Fantasy XVI both of which I’m equally excited for as I was for Zelda.

Re: Soapbox: If Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Isn’t Switch’s Swan Song, It Really Should Be

OrtadragoonX

@Greatluigi

I already have a PS5. I don’t think Nintendo needs to focus on that power race.

Primarily because the Switch is a handheld first and foremost (although I mostly play it docked, I still like taking it with me and playing in my bed on occasion) and thus it needs to have acceptable battery life.

I do expect more power than the current Switch. I think the OG Xbox One to PS4 Base (or somewhere in between) is doable with new modern chipsets while still keeping battery life and temperature at manageable levels for portable play. Use DLSS to make up the difference for docked play.

Re: Soapbox: If Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Isn’t Switch’s Swan Song, It Really Should Be

OrtadragoonX

I suspect the Switch still has plenty of life left in it even from a first party perspective.

I think TOTK and Pikmin 4 will be the last big AAA 1st party titles for it. But I’m certain it will get one more big Pokémon game (mainline Pokémon games tend to be the last big AAA release on Nintendo’s handheld systems) along with a bunch of smaller first party titles in the A or AA category. I suspect this will go on until 2026.

I’m thinking Switch 2 will have full BC with the Switch. So that’s a good strategy there since it means that the last big Pokémon title for Switch will be able to be played by the early adopters of Switch 2 along with all the smaller 1st party games Nintendo will certainly supply the Switch with in its twilight years.

Indie developers and third party “party game” franchises will stick around on the platform for possibly five more years.

I’ve had to defend myself physically from a few racists in my time. They tend to scatter quick once they see a Jericho 9mm pointed at their chest, though.

And what country are you in? In the US you cannot deny someone life saving surgery for any reason whatsoever in the ER. It may bankrupt you due to our flawed medical system, but they cannot deny you for any reason.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry's Technical Analysis Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

OrtadragoonX

I watched the tech review this morning. It’s what I expected.

The fact that the game only needed one patch and is perfectly playable and stable is a SHOCKER for 2023. Considering games like Jedi Survivor, Redfall, the PC version of Hogwart’s Legacy, and others were released in a train wreck state (in the case of Jedi and Redfall they are still train wrecks despite multiple patches) it’s a nice change of pace to have a very polished game available on release date.

I don’t regret my pre-order of Tears. This game is going to be a blast.

Re: Review: The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom - An Absolute Marvel, But Is It Better Than BOTW?

OrtadragoonX

I really should have taken tomorrow off.

Waiting from 7:30 (when I get to work) till 5:00 (when I get off) then a 25 minute drive home is going to kill me.

I could actually take a lunch break tomorrow (I usually skip lunch breaks for the extra hour of pay and just eat a sandwich but I have the right to take a one hour lunch) just so I can start the game in handheld mode. But this is definitely game I want to play mostly on my Sony X90K.

Re: Zelda Devs Confirm The Return Of Fan-Favourite Feature In TOTK

OrtadragoonX

I’m really hoping the dungeons are heavily physics based with multiple solutions for progression.

That was something I never cared much for in classic LOZ dungeons. There was only one solution to each problem. Most were easy enough for me to get on the first thought, but some of them you really had to think about. And there was only way to do it.

One thing I really enjoyed about BOTW was the physics engine and how it allowed for Shrine puzzles to be solved in multiple ways. The physics engine of that game was so robust that as long as you understood how the physics worked you could find your own solution to a problem.

I’m hoping these new dungeons greatly expand on that. Like traditional Zelda dungeon lengths but with multiple challenges that can be solved in multiple ways.
