Re: Review: Quake II - Another Truly Outstanding Remaster Of An FPS Icon

OrtadragoonX

One step closer to Quake III: Arena. One of the best multiplayer shooters ever made. I never got into Quake I or Quake II when I was young but I got absolutely CRACKED out on Arena. Granted I had the compromised Dreamcast port but boy was it fun with a bunch of friends.

I wish Epic would give classic Unreal Tournament some love like this.

It could be done. On both Xenia and RPCS3 you can unlock the frame rate for the respective 360 and PS3 versions. The PS3 version is a very taxing game so you need a beefy rig and there’s a lot of errors when the frame rate is unlocked. But on the right rig (RTX 4080) it can hit 60.

The 360 version on Xenia actually runs great unlocked. Very few bugs or issues and you can get it up to 120fps on the right PC build.

All I’m looking for in a Switch successor is these key elements.

1. Backwards compatibility with both games and accessories that use the rail system. This is key. I will only buy day one if BC is included. If they don’t I’ll just wait a year or two like I did with the OG Switch.

2. Upgraded performance. Base Xbox One to base PS4 in raster performance would be acceptable, but since they will be using a more modern Nvidia chipset they should include at a minimum DLSS 2.X which would allow the console to run higher resolutions while docked. If possible I would love to see the platform include DLSS 3.0 (which is a frame insertion technique that can give you dramatically increased local performance for a minor power cost in PC titles). But I have a feeling knowing Nintendo that the GPU cores will be based on the RTX 3000 series rather than the RTX 4000 based feature set.

3. New joycons. I would love to see them based on the Hori Split Pad Minis. But included all the tech of the OG joycons. Larger analog sticks and a more ergonomic shape are a must.

4. A modern Eshop that actually works correctly. And an online interface and feature set that matches the original Xbox 360.

The only LCD technology that is arguably superior to OLED is Micro-LED. Which gives LCD most of the benefits of OLED screen technology but combines it with LCDs natural resistance to burn-in compared to OLED (although modern OLED screens have mostly solved that problem). Micro-LED also provides better energy usuage with lit pixels compared to OLED. OLED usually provides superior energy efficiency to LED LCD screens since it can actually turn pixels off (true black) but Micro-LED provides superior energy usage with lit pixels.

Most phone screen resolutions are overkill for the size of the screen in question.

My IPhone 14 Pro Max has a beautiful screen resolution of 2796x1290 (making it above 1080p) but honestly that resolution is overkill for a 6.7 inch screen. I’ve always wondered how much better the battery life would be if the resolution was cut down to slightly above a native 720p display. Granted it has great battery life but I credit that to Apple’s fantastic stand by modes; it really just sips electricity when you’re not actively using it or simply running background processes with the screen off. When in active heavy use you can watch the battery drain relatively quickly. I’ve always wondered if a slightly lower resolution would help with that.

The difference between 1080p and 720p isn’t very noticeable on such small displays. And I suspect to save costs Nintendo will go with cheaper battery formulas over most flagship phones, which use the most sophisticated battery cells available to the general consumer.

I’ll take battery life over resolution any day of the week. But a 1080p screen would be nice if it doesn’t dramatically impact battery life.

Re: Poll: Final Fantasy IV - Do You Prefer The Original Or The DS Remake?

@mauhlin12

It did give us the greatest line in any final fantasy game.

“You spoony bard!!!”

It’s even above the two runner ups.

“I Garland will knock you all down!”

And who could forget this one.

“This guy are sick.”

Speaking of crazy Final Fantasy lines, did you guys know that if you do the stairs at Shinra tower on the original PS1 translation of FFVII Tifa calls Barret a… well I don’t like saying it. But she calls Barret a r*****. I noticed that was taken out in later translations.

@daveMcFlave

In terms of content it is the most feature filled version.

But it’s also based on the GBA version. Which means it’s too easy.

FFIV lives and dies by its difficulty. It’s not very long and it’s extremely linear by Final Fantasy standards. So for me the difficulty needs to be high. The Super Famicom version is the default version for me. But the 3D Remake is my favorite version because they ramped the challenge up even higher than the Super Famicom version.

Well my country will be at war if that happens. And considering our current military recruitment readiness issues I wouldn’t be surprised if my 33 year old ass got drafted in to the US Navy as a replacement sailor since it would be primarily a naval war.

That’s the downside to being an American. Never know when that’s gonna happen since it’s still on the books but hasn’t been used since 1973.

Changing market.

PC gaming finally took off in Japan back in the late 00s. They were the longest holdouts but they’ve now embraced it fully. That’s the high end of the Japanese market today.

Handheld and mobile gaming dominates there for the mainstream option. No handheld system has ever truly failed in Japan. Even the Game Gear did ok in the Japanese market back in 1990s. And the Vita did alright as well considering it absolutely bombed in the US and Europe.

Basically Japan is a very different market today than it was during the heyday of the PS2.

@CharlieGirl

I finally upgraded after holding off for two years.

I’ve been enjoying Fire Emblem, Mario and Luigi Super Star Saga, and Paper Mario. I haven’t played any of them in a long long time.

I tried some Star Fox 64 as well. But that game really doesn’t work well on a Switch Pro Controller or my Hori Split Pros. Paper Mario is much slower and is fine though.

When they restock i might pick up an N64 controller for the Switch.

Re: Feature: The One Thing Wii Did Much Better Than Switch

OrtadragoonX

I skipped the Wii. It was the console that pushed me away from Nintendo for a LONG time. Considering my love for the GameCube, it was quite sad for me to see them go in that direction. I still kept the DS lite and I loved it, but I will admit that outside of RPGs I didn’t buy much native DS software. I used it as a glorified GBA for my pretty big GBA collection I had back then.

I was actually interested in the Wii U but I had to choose between that and a PS4 considering it was my own money. I made the right decision.

The Switch is what brought me back to Nintendo. I don’t have any nostalgia for the Wii. I did fool around with a friend of mine’s but honestly I didn’t see what the fuss was about. Motion controls are lame to me.

Re: Talking Point: Which Version Of Zelda: Link's Awakening Is Your Favourite?

OrtadragoonX

I would love to see the studio that did the remake tackle the Oracle games and also remake Zelda 1 in similar styling.

Zelda 1 really needs a remake. Technically there was a 16bit version released on the BS Sattelview in 95 I think. But I think it’s been long enough. A proper 2D Zelda 1 remake is necessary. I’ll pay 60 bucks for it. Please Nintendo.
