Capcom surprised Nintendo fans this week with not one but two brand new Monster Hunter games. The second title, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, will be released on the Switch in 2021 and is a follow-up to the original 2016 3DS entry.
This announcement is now seemingly fueling sales of the original Monster Hunter Stories game on Amazon in the US, as originally spotted by Twitter user Stealth40k. At the time of writing, the game is the best-selling 3DS title, and right now is the 11th best-selling 3DS product overall.
On Amazon UK, this game is also one of the best-selling 3DS games, in 38th place. Twitter user TheShaneM further noted how the digital version is currently on sale on the eShop in the US. Instead of $39.99, it's currently available for $19.99. Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is on sale as well via the Switch eShop.

Like 3 Monster hunters coming.
OMG!!!!!!!!!
@Jacobpower
We've got Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2.
What's the third one?
@Rexenoboy The Last Monster hunter, the one where Rey and Finn hunt down the monster Emperor penguin
I just started replaying it myself. It's very colourful! I hadn't used the 3d effect in a long while and it was surprisingly impressive to see again. Having fun riding around on a velociprey, want to get a kut-ku!
@Lordplops
Lol, you sure they weren't hunting easter eggs?
What’s that coming over the hill? Is it a Monster Hunter? Sure. Why not.
Stories like this show that the 3DS isn’t really dead; it’s just in retirement. But it can still have an impact.
Great game for young and old. Me and my youngest enjoyed it
It’s a fun game, but I never did finish it. I guess this is my excuse to fire it up again.
It's a really charming and engrossing game.
They should throw the remaster they made for phones on the Switch for this holiday season, to entice people while they wait for Rise and Stories 2.
Seems like interest in the Monster Hunter Stories brand exists..
I should probably pick it up as I have the amiibo, but skipped the game, but I can't even see myself playing let alone completing the rest of the 3DS instalments.
I did enjoy what I had played of 3 Ultimate on 3DS/Wii U, but I can't see myself committing to completing any of these games. I have the Switch game too, which I had only played briefly. I really ought to stop buying games that I have no intention of completing.
And so it began that Nintendo would stop discontinuing the 3ds and it would outsell the Switch and therefore discontinuing it.
The game is like £15 in CEX for any UK readers looking to pick it up on 3DS!
I wonder how much you need to sell to be “best selling 3ds game” this days....
Anyway, glad it is doing well
I kinda want to play stories one on switch before i play 2. Wont buy a 3ds. You cant make me
Lol I started yesterday night.
It looks cool, the environments are a bit lazy, but the characters and other object look pretty amazing. I love the art style. I haven't battled yet, it takes quite a lot of introduction to get there XD.
So far so good, I like this kind of games, and Stories 2 looks fantastic.
@Jacobpower is the first Monster Hunter Stories any good? I heard that the gameplay is pretty good but the story is not great.
I was interested in it back in the day, and have since played Monster Hunter World a decent amount. So I might pick up Stories 2 since the gameplay is more my jam
I’ve been going on about MH Stories for years, I’m glad people are finally noticing this game
I think I’ve called it my favourite Pokémon game on 3DS a number of times
Try the demo, it takes up like 4,000 blocks, but you'll get a good five hours out of it.
Glad more people are giving this game a chance, I had a blast with it and I'm looking forward to the sequel. My favorite was easily Barioth, who could absolutely destroy everything. My friend actually got annoyed with me in one battle, haha. Great game overall though.
Just bought a new sealed copy off Ebay Uk for 25 squid. Amazon were sold out and argos was £30
Looking forward to giving it a go in prep for monster hunter stories 2
Cool, now port it to Switch.
Nice. I've been telling people about this game for a while, but eventually you grow tired of ignorant people calling everything Pokemon clones. So glad to see them being wrong about the franchise not having any chance to see a sequel. Hopefully more people will realise it's a better game than the last few generations of pocket monsters.
It's a bit of a shame we didn't get the story expansion for the 3DS version, though.
I played the demo and it was really good. You can continue into the full game too.
I was tempted to pick this up as well, but decided to hold off for now since I'm busy with Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. Might pick it up in the future.
Yeah I tried to get MH Stories from Argos when it was £3, but had no luck.enjoyed the demo but other games caught my attention at the time. Will check it out at some point.
I bought this game a month ago just because I found it for a crazy cheap price at a Gamestop, it was only 5 euro.
They told me that they have to make space for PS5 and the new XBOX so PSP, PS Vita, DS and many 3DS games are incredibly cheap
I couldn't really get into this, but the sequel looks good, so I might give it another shot at some point.
@KnightsTemplar the iOS version looks great. I think I’m gronna play it that way.
Loved it. I thought it was a great on the GO game.
Also you can get the HD version on iOS for $19 if you do not have a 3DS. It looks a lot better than the 3DS version.
@Bendu I know you were asking someone else but if you don't mind I can answer that:
Personally, that game is my favourite 3DS game and I played about 80 games on it. The story is the classic "Saturday morning cartoon" type of story, it may not be excepcional but it's entertaining and solid enough to make you feel interested. Besides, I found the characters lovely. At worst, the story is neutral so I wouldn't put it as a negative aspect and in my case I found it more solid and endearing than most of the stories of many children/teen games.
Gameplay wise, I found the game way more entertaining than Pokemon games. It also has a unique combat system in which you have to rely on your character's actions, your Monster's AI (they have certain tendencies depending on the species and genes) and the moments in which you command your Monster actions. When it comes to Monster collecting, you have to find certain eggs and steal them which frankly has been the most fun I had in any of these type of games. I really, really loved how there are many types of nests and I didn't get tired of searching for more eggs after a hundred hours of playing. It will also present actual challenge, at least in some of the content.
Graphically wise, the game is one of the most beautiful ones. I was so disappointed when I saw Sword and Shield on Switch because I remembered how much this one impressed me.
Another thing that almost no one mentions: the orchestral soundtrack is amazing.
Sorry for the long reply. If you aren't sure you can give the demo a try, just keep in mind that it doesn't show how deep the combat and monster collecting and modifying goes.
I keep seeing the 3DS Monster Hunter games at amazing prices on the Argos site (£1.75 for MH4U!) but they never have them in stock in any store near me and won't deliver to me. Damn it.
I mean, I bought it. Why not, right? Also turns out sales and my.nintendo discounts stack
@Rexenoboy I can only assume he’s referring to the MH Movie
@Lord
Great, why did you have to remind me that's in the works?
Been tempted to use my Nintendo rewards to get it digitally for ages. But between MH4U burnout & just not picking my 3DS up enough in general, kept putting it off.
looks like I wasn't the only one with this idea! I never heard of the first game, but the trailer for the sequel looks great to me so I'll probably pick this one up at some point
Bout time this game gets its due. It was grossly overlooked when it released.
The sequel looks so sick though. I mean, the first was good, from what I played. And definitely impressive for a 3DS game. But this new one is on another level entirely. It’s gonna do a LOT better than the original, especially coming after MH Rise, which will absolutely destroy the sales charts. Perfect opportunity for the series to get a decent following.
I got this game about three years ago so I know the story and i'm ready for part 2.
I remember stumbling on MH stories, I'd played EVERY MH game prior and had somehow overlooked it. I didn't have my phone w me and grabbed it up from GameStop half expecting a bizarre "big head" cartoony lame spinoff... Boy was I wrong lol. It ending up surprising me so much I took off of work that day just to stay home and play it. It's obviously not like a normal MH game, but nor is it like any other turn based rpg either. It has pokemon-ish elements but the battle system and format is much different, simple yet deep and clever. You also fight right there alongside your monsters. monster Hunter games always had spectacular visuals and stories is no different, it has a completely different cel shaded cartoon style that works so well and the entire game, overworld, towns, battles all look so good. I LOVE the idea of another entry in this series.
@Rexenoboy why it’s the great Paul WS Anderson. How bad could it be?
@Lord
If it doesn't make me want to kill myself, I'll take it as a win.
Can confirm I bought it after the sequel was announced
The announcement of a sequel always put me in the humour to play through the original again. This is no exception.
@roy130390 You covered all the bases well. I typically don't recommend MHS for the story, but I do push the graphics, egg stealing, gene customization, and refreshing rock/paper/scissors combat system. I played the game last year and was sold on it by playing the demo.
A Pokemon clone this is not. Anyone who says otherwise clearly has not played the game.
@Tyranexx Thanks! Same here, I invested many hours just on the demo alone. I'll probably try to get the sequel since day/ first week which is something I rarely do.
@Itachi2099 Agreed. I've already played the game on my 3ds but would definitely play again on my switch.
@roy130390 Thanks to my enjoyment of the first game, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is definitely on my radar. I don't know if it'll be a day 1 buy, however; I've only had my Switch a few months and am still playing catch-up on some of its excellent back catalogue. But I definitely will be getting it!
It's just strange why they don't port Monster Hunter Stories 1 to the Switch and released that before the 2nd instalment.
I mean, they ported it to Mobile already last year. Sure they manage to port it to the Switch too.
It was going for £10 at Argos about 3 months ago - Glad I picked up mine then. Wish I had done the same when Hyrule Warriors was £27 on Switch...
Makes sense. I ran to amazon right after the Direct to grab a copy. Ended up buying from a local retailer for 18€ including shipping cost.
I tried the demo and didn’t like it
Yeah, i ordered it MH Stories from Gamestop this past weekend too. Looking forward to it.
Decided to get it on my tablet, it's only $20 on the play store. Really enjoying it so far.
