When was the last time you went on a nice long trip? Thanks to one thing and another this year, it's probably been quite a while, although it's hard to believe that three years have now passed since we first grabbed our caps and went on a kingdom-hopping jaunt in Super Mario Odyssey.
It is, however, entirely true: Nintendo UK even tweeted about it to remind us:
If that hypnotically looping gif above featuring the principal characters boogie-ing looks familiar, that's because it's adapted from a video put out to celebrate the game's first anniversary in 2018.
Looking back on the game, it's perhaps a little odd that it never got any meaty DLC. Yes, it was periodically updated with free costumes, some new snapshot filters, and it got that nugget of Labo VR content (not to mention Luigi's Balloon World), but of all the games that do get paid DLC, a new locale or two to explore is something we would definitely have coughed up for. So many memories!
Perhaps there's something in that, though. Could Nintendo be channelling all those ideas into a straight sequel, a-la Super Mario Galaxy 2? After all, everyone could do with getting away from it all again — now more than ever, no?
We can but dream (and cross our fingers, legs and other limbs until we look quite silly). While we wait for Mario's next adventure — one that we didn't already enjoy on Wii U, that is — let's raise a glass to his last truly epic journey.
Apologies for mentioning Galaxy 2 (we know it still smarts). Feel free to share your own memories from three years of Super Mario Odyssey — and your hopes for the future — below.

Great game. Up there with Hellblade and Persona 5 as one of my top 3 favorite games of 2017. It manages to capture such an innocent sense of imagination that really captivated me through its presentation, the numerous Kingdom designs and how extremely well executed the Capture mechanic was.
I still think 2017 was Nintendo's best year in a long time, as well as for gaming as a whole and nothing has really come close in my opinion, despite 2018 having bangers like Spider-Man and God of War, as well as this year with FFVII Remake, Persona 5 Royal, Xenoblade and Ghost of Tsushima.
I was hoping to be at this game in my marathon in time for its anniversary, but I'm still on Dream Team. Hard to believe it's been three years already.
Time flies. On the Switch, Breath of the Wild was the most breathtaking game I lost myself in but Mario Odyssey is definitely the most fun game I've ever played. Already 100% it twice.
A great Super Mario game. But not an easy one to go back and replay because of the open nature of it. Everything feels too familiar at a glance.
I'd love Nintendo to make 2021 a similar year to 2017. Get BOTW2, Odyssey 2 and another Rabbids game out.
Take the shine off PS5 and Xbox's first year on sale as much as possible.
I just bought it and I`m loving it so far! And I'm terrible at platform games! Haven`t had the time to finish it yet though
If they make a sequel, it should allow you to keep captures so you can use them in different areas, sort of how Kirby works where you can enter a whole new level with a power up.
The game that brings my child hoods yes..
It was a great first playthrough and a horribly boring second playthrough.
The most responsive controls I think I’ve felt in a game. Yep it was easy in places, but not to 100% it. Who’s to say they won’t have something up their sleeves based on what they’ve done...
I mean it's hard to do a 100% Some of the moons are just crazy and stupid to get..
I got SMO the day it came out and I loved it! I went ahead and 100%'d it last year, as well. Perhaps I'll revisit it at one point.
Hopefully we'll get a sequel soon, I'd be down for that. A truly excellent game.
I’m still hoping to Mario Galaxy 2 scenario and getting my hands on odyssey 2
@Hobbesyall I think there done of mario this year..
An all time great.
Prefer Galaxy series put technical platforming was arguably better here plus there was the open world.
Super Mario Odyssey is my favorite game I REALLY HOPE there will be a sequel I remember when I captured my 1st Frog!
I'm still hoping for a new Mario game where all the levels are more connected with one another in an open world kind of setting, dunno how they'd do it, but if anyone can do it, it's Nintendo. Just imagine a map even half the size of Breath of the Wild's map filled with platforming goodness. Plus underground and sky areas and all that.
Odyssey is an amazing game of course, had tons of fun with it. I was happiest post-credits!
Played through it five times. I think it's tied with Galaxy 2 as my favorite Mario game, I love it. Really hope it doesn't take too long for Nintendo to announce the next one, if they're making it.
Kinda surprised that it isn’t on the sales leader board anymore like Mk8d. If I were buying a new system, I would get this, MK8D and maybe ACNH to see what the hype is about.
It was a good game but felt like another 3D World rather than Sunshine or Galaxy 1. I finished it but had no drive to 100% it.
I was in Tokyo the day Odyssey launched. A lot of electronics stores were blasting the main theme in their entrances, which made the whole city feel like a big Mario celebration.
I first played my copy on the train ride from Tokyo to Kanazawa. Good times. I can’t wait to go back.
One of my favorite Mario games! It deserves a sequel!
Still haven’t completed it 100% but it’s one of the few Switch games I both enjoyed and completed. It helps that it was my first Switch game!
@dazzleshell
I would love a new Mario + Rabbids game!
Quite possibly my favorite game of all time. Absolutely love basically everything about it
I have yet to play this. It's on my list just waiting for a discount or price drop for the physical version.
Very mixed feelings on Odyssey. Looks fantastic, the variety between kingdoms is great, when there's platforming, it's excellent, the captures are fun, etc etc. I cant seem to feel like something is missing though. Maybe it's the areas that don't involve platforming, maybe it's the short length, idk. I think it might be the fact that instead of quality, laid out quests, there are a lot of moons that are very very simple to find, however that is part of the game's charm at the same time
@PBandSmelly It's by no means a bad game, in fact it's a freaking fantastic game, I just think some people miss the meatier feeling of well developed quests over a heck-ton of moons that you can get by just ground pounding a spot or planting a seed
I just played it again! It was an excellent game. As I finished it I did wonder if we would see some DLC or a new edition with added content this holiday. We have had so little from Nintendo developers this year. I have been waiting for some solid announcements, but at this point I'm starting to wonder if there will be any big holiday games other than Hyrule Warriors this year. Still waiting to hear from Squeenix too! Unless FFXVI was their only announcement for this year.
Great game not 64 or galaxy 2 level great but had fun with it.
Midnight launch
I recently replayed this game and it was just as much as it was before. I didn't have time to get all the moons like I did before, but I finished the main story and I'm looking forward to getting all the moons again. Well, except maybe the jump-rope moon... May have to skip that one.
Great game, but once 3D World + Bowser's Fury comes, I want to see it drop in price.
I wish I could share the joy, but I just cannot, I found the game pretty underwhelming personally compared to the Galaxy games and even 3D World honestly. The worlds in Odyssey somehow felt both bloated and empty at the same time and the soundtrack was very forgettable which was a real shame when the aforementioned games had such great soundtracks.
I think the formula itself is alright, they just have to trim the fat somewhat and I think it'd be much better off, soundtrack obviously is a matter of preference and all I can really hope is that the next one is more my taste.
This game was such a huge disappointment. Playing through the Mario 3D All-Stars Collection helped me realize why.
Getting a star used to feel like a real accomplishment, and it was the fruit of determination through very challenging tasks. In SMO, there were so many moons that required zero effort (pounding the ground when the controller rumbles for instance) that it cheapened the entire experience for me.
Also, the music was so incredible in former Mario games, and it all fit so well. Mario Galaxy’s soundtrack is a masterpiece. I found that I had to play SMO muted because the music grated on me.
I know there are mercilessly hard moons to collect, but SMO was the most disappointing game I can remember in my gaming life.
I’ve played it once, but really enjoyed it. I did finish the extra levels. I have about 700 moons.
@KevinLo9 I feel like the easier to find moons were designed that way to accomodate for bitesized collecting on the go considering the Switch's handheld nature. There were some that were just incredibly superficial like looking up at a structure and waiting for a moon to materialize, but the main story objective moons definitely carried that sense of progression from the Power Stars or Shine Sprites, while the easier Moons were kinda like the NSMB Star Coins. They're probably designed to be found easily so you could easily make progress in the game while in handheld mode or out and about
Bought the Switch bundle as an early Christmas gift for the fam.
Great game, but at the same time it always felt lacking, kept expecting it to get better but it never really did. The Galaxy games showed how much you can do in a 3D game that Odyssey felt almost 2D in comparison, kind of like SM3DW.
So yeah, looking for a sequel that adds a lot more movement like Galaxy had. 2021 sounds good. Would explain why so little DLC - Labo is fun, play it if you own them both - and perhaps why the 3 pack is time limited, Odyssey 2 as their big May game. It was probably planned for this holiday season but covid slowed them down.
Day 1, and that day will come. Hopefully not a Pro exclusive though if Pro has higher resolution I'm fine with that.
I really liked the 2D levels that wrapped around objects. Those were a lot of fun! Some of the 2D levels had walls that reversed gravity, like in Galaxy.
I sometimes go back to Odyssey just to replay the 2D level in New Donk City.
Just started replaying this myself a couple days ago! Playing SM3DAS gave me the itch to return to Odyssey.
@KevinLo9,
Quite the opposite for me, the 3D collection is great, but has it aged all that well?, sure Galaxy is still a masterpiece, but it's levels feel so small and restricted compared to odyssey's, I think this is one genre that bigger more expansive levels really helps your sense of immersion.
The Wooded kingdom is a perfect example of this, and it's underground section you find by accident is pure genius imho.
Odyssey is up there with Galaxy 2 and Mario 64 as my favourite 3D Mario games. In fact according to the Switch I’ve put over 390 hours into it from replaying it so many times.
If only we’d got a few more Kingdoms as DLC...
@johnvboy Underground section is cool but there really wasn't much there tbh
Odyssey is the one time that I was really looking forward to DLC. I remember giving the ending a temporary pass: "Peach turned down Mario's proposal? Yeah, with a smirk — she's clearly got something special planned. Nintendo wouldn't make all of this wedding-themed merch and use this plotline just to fake us out completely and knock Mario that low." They did. Not even a trip to Isle Delfino despite being on the map and even omitted other areas like Kong Island, Diamond City, no mentions of Sarasaland, etc. Trotting the Mario globe was a blast, but I can't say I feel like a round trip after that last sour note.
I'm actually pretty disappointed with this game. The difficulty is insultingly low, even in the post-game, and the worlds feel too small.
Still a good game but not worth the excessive amount of praise it gets.
@chipia @Steel76 @KevinLo9 @Expa0 @rjejr @Christofu
I can see what you mean. And I'm noticing all of these problems could've been solved if the game was linear instead of open-world. In Mario's open-world games, the developers create beautiful worlds that take time to make but then stuff them with collectibles that take no effort to create. Plus, there's the fact that many power moons are copied and pasted into the different kingdoms. In Mario's linear games, enemies, power-ups, and pits are everywhere, and the developers know exactly where the player will go. This helps them place enemies in perfect places. Super Mario Odyssey kingdoms are fun to explore, but there's so much unnecessary space. Even when there are obstacles, they can just be completely ignored because the developers try to appeal to the less-experienced players by not requiring that they use Mario's entire moveset, which means being good at controlling Mario is basically cheating.
Super Mario 3D World got me to buy a Wii U and this game got me to buy a Switch (already had BOTW on wiiU). It wasn't the most challenging but I'd been burned out by difficult mario games after trying to complete New Super Luigi U. It's been a lot of years but I probably wont' play through it again just because I've seen it all and I spent so much time grinding my way past 350 moons on my one save.
I actually don’t want a sequel. I think this is a great Mario game as a stand-alone experience. I would much rather have a sequel to 3D World with more characters to choose from in multiplayer, and perhaps the hat mechanic thrown in as well. Would be nice to include Wario with his charge mechanic, and maybe give him alternate power ups that are a throw back to his games.
I'm playing this game for the first time; I reached the end credits last week and am now combing the previous kingdoms for power moons before touching the post-game content. Currently sitting at 435 moons! I don't plan on 100%ing the game, but I'm not against some exploring lol.
I absolutely love Super Mario Odyssey; it's my second favorite 3D Mario after the first Super Mario Galaxy.
@chipia it doesn't feel all that satisfying and it isn't just the lack of difficulty I think its also it starts to feel repetitive pretty quick.
Such a fun game. I think 100% this would take too long and Id rather restart and do a fresh playthrough
I thought Odyssey was great until I went back recently to replay it and realized none of the moons were actually all that fun to get.
I get the feeling that Odyssey just isn't going to be as fondly remembered as 64, the Galaxy games, or even Sunshine
I can‘t imagine anyone not loving this game. From beginning to end it feels like you‘re watching a Mario movie that takes him through his most epic journey yet. Sometimes I sat there smiling and thinking to myself: Nintendo, I love what you did there.
I honestly can‘t imagine where they go with Mario after that but Mario Odyssey showed that they still got it after all these years.
Amazing game, I'm one who usually takes my time with playing through games, but I just couldn't put this one down, I bought it on release day and beat it 3 days later. I haven't quite 100% the game to this day (but I'm pretty close!), I play from time to time to get some more moons and some costumes
While I enjoyed the game, in retrospective I think Galaxy is the better game.
I played Super Mario Odyssey during lockdown and it was wonderful to explore all these inventive, brightly coloured worlds at my own pace while being stuck inside in real life. The simple pleasure of jumping around finding Moons in such delightful locales really put a smile on my face.
This might be a controversial opinion, but for me, Odyssey is the best 3D Mario game. It's not as revolutionary as Super Mario 64 and is perhaps too easy for some players, but I found that the replacement of lives with losing coins meant I approached levels with less stress and a greater willingness to try out risky manoeuvres, which is surely part of the point of playing games!
Fun game, I should come back to it.
@KBoo I would take a sequel to literally any mario game but I 100% agree that a 3d world sequel with new characters and power ups would be so amazing
No thanks, I definitely regret buying this game back then, it's just not up to the standards previously set by 3D Mario games.
I'm surprised with how many people weren't so keen on Odyssey in the comments. Thought I was the only person. I am going to play Odyssey a second time but too many power moons was the problem for me, you don't get a sense of achievement like you would getting power stars.
I think we will get Odyssey 2 because the game sold well and they did Galaxy 2 on Wii. Nintendo will want 3D World to have a good run first though.
Best game ever, now let me play luigi!
Greatest game ever made — it's a consensus pick as best Mario game ever — yet it still feels under rated!
@TheRealKyleHyde Similar for me. I recently found all of the purple coins and am at 821 moons... I never thought I would actually 100% the game.... but (WITHOUT guides!) it has been a blast to just go at my own pace, and just enjoy moving/jumping/goofing around in each kingdom, and then start discovering all the secrets and connections
It's the GOAT
A 2 player coop odysee game Mario and luigi.
I miss some good couch coop games.
One of the things I love most about Odyssey is that it brought back a real sense of imagination that I feel was missing from the series on the Wii U generation. Super Mario 3D Land and World are great games, don't get me wrong, but I think they, for the most part, played it too safe with the gameplay and the worlds. A significant amount of levels in those could fit in the kinda bland confines of a NSMB game. And that even bled into games like Paper Mario Sticker Star and Mario & Luigi Paper Jam.
I love how wild Odyssey gets, and how it takes a lot of the old Mario level themes, and puts a new spin on them. I realize that some of the different art styles of some of the level aren't everyone's cup of tea, but I really like the variety. The Odyssey-inspired tracks in the next Mario Kart are gonna be awesome.
@wazlon Nah you're definitely not alone. There are plenty of people disappointed with Odyssey, they just aren't all that vocal about it. And when they are vocal about it they get downvoted into oblivion
I absolutely loved this, played through to 880 moons and smiled the whole way through. Currently going through Galaxy and up to 92 Stars and can't really decide between them. Odyssey controls felt tighter as by comparison Galaxy a little less precise. Maybe Odyssey suffered from a little bloat on some of the stars, but such a good game. Would welcome more. Both better than 64 for me.
I didn’t love Odyssey overall, it’s a good game, but just doesn’t reach the heights of some of its predecessors. Now a sequel that takes the 2D ideas from Odyssey and runs with them would be amazing!
I'm not much of a Mario fan personally but this game was amazing and I definitely want a follow up. My dream would be to get a sequel featuring Geno if he does end up in Smash. It's wishful thinking but hey, I'd go bonkers if it happened
I'm another who couldn't really get into Odyssey (much as I tried to) and consider it my least favourite of the 3D Mario games. Aside from the forgettable music and big empty worlds (some of which barely even had any platforms) already mentioned I really didn't like the whole cappy thing and having to learn new controls and ways of playing all the time... Quite tedious and disrupted the "flow" of the game.
I also found some of the design choices odd, like some areas and characters looked too realistic (eg the T-Rex) I'm sorry to say but it sometimes made it feel like playing one of those Unreal Engine fan things where Mario's dumped in a generic looking environment... The vibrant and suitably cartoony Mario Kart 8 is more how I'd like to see a modern Mario platformer look like. Or parts of Paper Mario Origami King.
I feel like Nintendo tried to make Odyssey feel like a Pixar movie and perhaps they succeeded in that but in turn it didn't quite feel "Mario" enough to me.
Odyssey feels like busy-work when compared to older Mario titles. That, and the incessant dialogue interruptions and non-stop shouting from Mario made it feel like a waste of money for me.
Odyssey is my favorite Switch exclusive, by far. It's only second to 64 in the series for me. It feels like a true sequel to 64/Sunshine that I wasn't sure if we would ever get. The moons are like a cross between Stars in 64 and blue coins in Sunshine. There's just so much content of every difficulty level. 3D Mario is my favorite videogame series and Odyssey is right up there with the best. It's already in the rotation of my most replayed games. I really hope we see a sequel.
Was fun but not wahoooo fun like 64
I still feel like this one was a little half baked, at least some of the Kingdoms were. Would like to see them try something new again, more polished and classic in design.
Absolutely love Super Mario Odyssey, my game of the year for 2017. I would love for a sequel to come out.
This game was such a blast from start to finish. The kingdom’s were so full of character (though I wish some of them were bigger). I was really hoping to see some further story DLC with Sarasaland since we haven’t seen it in like 30 years.
Amazing game im liteally playing it rn
@Joekun Agreed! The 2D sections of Odyssey are my favorite parts.
I sometimes go back to Odyssey just to replay the 2D level in New Donk City.
@The-Chosen-one I feel that. I get that games need to have multiplayer considered in the design to be good, but there is such a huge multitude of franchises i wish had couch co op, not to mention how frustrating it is that everything seems to be online with no local play
Probably my least favorite controls in Odyssey are when you are flinging the hat from a fork and need to hit a certain target with precision (like another fork that is surrounded by lethal dangers).
I feel old now
I like this game a lot, the only thing that annoyed me out of my mind is that Mario felt like Mickey mouse a lot (at least to me) in some places like while wall jumping and some of his voice almost sounded like mickey. Other than that, pretty awesome (really thst is my only complaint on this game besides been way to short to be a Mario game) i am crazy?
I think it's a great game for the open world/collectible style. I personally prefer 3D world/land because they are more like 2d Mario. I like jumping......
I’m really hoping Nintendo surprises us with a sequel this year, although it looks more and more likely that we won’t have any more titles announced for 2020.
I really hope Mario Odyssey gets a sequel. I mean if Breath of the Wild can get a sequel, why can’t Odyssey? I think they could add a lot of cool new content in a sequel. I really hope DK Island is in the sequel and Mario finally interacts with Cranky Kong after fighting him in the arcade games. It would make me go on a gushing frenzy as a Donkey Kong fan.
First Mario game I've loved since World, and worth every moment!
@Duffman92,
Most people do love the game look at it's 18 million sales, no 3-D Mario has come close to these numbers, and also the reviews are great as well from both critics and users, 97 and 8.9 respectively, of course there will always be people that do not like a certain game, which is their choice at the end of the day, but without a doubt a minority.
Best 3D Mario game. 🥰
Perfect controls, great music, surprises throughout the whole game, variety-rich worlds, fun boss fights and it was just fun to play.
You would need to look for really odd reasons to say this game is even mediocre.
It's amazing how this game stood side-by-side with Breath of the Wild, even managing to be nominated for the Game of the Year in 2017 alongside BotW (though BotW won the award). 2017 was Nintendo going all-out and in that process, they gave us this truly amazing game.
@MrBlacky,
Oh there are quite a few people on here and other forums that love to look for reasons not to like a game.
@Steel76,
Could be, and as i said in a previous post it's up to them at the end of the day, but on the whole this game is awesome and the critic/user reviews and sales back that up.
Intentionally did not 100% complete this game so I would always have some power moons to find throughout the Switch lifecycle. 😁
Well the game is crazy..
About time for a sequel
It's never been the same since that first year. Lazy ports for 60 bucks ever since.
@Sparrowhawk They only need you to buy the console once. Lol
I really enjoyed this game but only the first time. Every time I tried revisiting, it just felt...boring. I realized its just a collectathon with not much else. Other Mario games had smaller more concentrated levels that were far more enjoyable. Moreso when you replay them. And yea open world Mario wasn't done before so its cool that it finally happened but the next game should be more linear
