It's only been out for a matter of days, but it would appear that hackers have found a way to cheat in Nintendo's new Mario battle royale, Super Mario Bros. 35.
As reported by Polygon, social media users began to notice some suspicious activity in the game earlier this week, with players topping the leaderboards after collecting a whopping 99,999 coins. That feat seems very unlikely, leading people to believe that hacking must be to blame.
On top of this, Nintendo has removed a YouTube user's video titled 'Super Mario Bros. 35 Online hacking Part 2', which presumably showed gameplay of a hacked version of the game, or possibly advice on how to hack into the game yourself.
While collecting coins isn't the main objective of the game, having an infinite supply of them gives you an incredibly unfair advantage over your opponents. It's no surprise, then, that Nintendo wants to stop hacking of this nature in its tracks.
If you're looking to pick up some new tips and tricks to win at Super Mario Bros. 35 legitimately, feel free to check out our guide.

Good I'm glad Nintendo is on it.i called them and complained
Level 45 by now and still did not manage to get a #1 so far.
I got 99999 as well. But hey, I'm a pro gamer.
Won my first game yesterday. It’s a fantastic title, shame it’ll only be around for 6months or so
@Octane its impossible without cheating. And this talking about coin ranking.which in coin ranking its impossible to get 99,999 coins in one game
I suggest a remote hard brick as a deterrent. Set those cheater's Switch to self destruct
If this is still popular in 6 months time, i can see a full release coming, maybe with Mario 3 / Mario World themes as well.
I don't get what the point is. It's obvious to everyone that they're cheaters so it's not like they're impressing anyone. Just making themselves look bad.
But again people where upset that Nintendo is going after home brew activities.
Can't say that I care, coins aren't important and doesn't give anyone an advantage. You make more coins than you could ever need playing regularly.
@Fazermint that much coins give you basically unlimited time. Since you get +15 seconds when you spin the item wheel.
These sort of people are so sad, what is there to even gain it?
@Yanina I dunno it ticks down really fast... you could just run through and keep using it to destroy all enemies though. That lakitu video a few days ago happened to me as well while playing just as hard is that hacking?
@Fazermint it affects coin ranking
It's not about what you guys are thinking.has nothing to do with in game.its coin ranking is what it affects
Losers. They're not impressing anyone.
@Darkyoshi98 The ranking resets every 24h and only shows who plays the most. So yeah can't say that I care.
@Yanina that's not how it works, you can only select one item per game to start with
It's okay everyone the hackers were just making some 'fan' games using nintendo's assets, it's all good.
I see this just as yet more evidence that people’s default setting is self centered. The sad thing is that it is for such a pointless and worthless matter as a game leaderboard. I can only think that the joy derived from this can be only from denying someone else first place, and that is just sad.
@Fazermint
You press X during the game. It costs 20 coins and you get an item (Mushroom, Fire Flower, Star or POW block) this gives you the 15 seconds. Since you have unlimited coins you then have unlimited time and items.
Loving this for quick bursts of fun. Got 1st a few times and generally come top 4, trick is not to rush and stay flower powered! Easy to gain time when flooded with enemies haha
Yeah I noticed this myself. *****. I can't stand people like this. If you wanna cheat, fine, but don't do it in online games where other people will be affected by it too even if only in leaderboards. Destroys the whole point of having leaderboards to begin with.
@BenAV Some people just enjoy the challenge of hacking regardless of how it impacts other people (like people who enjoy breaking bus stops and pleasuring horses). Either that or their life accomplishments are so lacking they’ll resort to anything to make them feel they have something to be proud of. It’s equally sad and pathetic.
I know it was strange I lost to this dude who not only had earned 78000 coins one match. But had all the time in the world him not actually sending enemies my way.
How sad people need to do stuff like this
@riggah This is the overall coins you collected. You can use some of that coins to start with an item. But you start with zero coins every time you play in game. So they don’t get unlimited time. I have like 15,000 coins and I can’t use them during game play. This just affects the rankings not the game itself. But I won’t be surprised if they find a way around that soon.
I haven't tried it myself, but my thought is you can probably get infinite coins if you do the infinite 1up trick on 3-1. Then again, that would take nearly 5,000 seconds, so that doesn't seem likely.
@bonham2 They change the game so you can’t do that anyway. You only get one time increase per turtle No matter how many times you stop on them. So they fix the unlimited One up trick.
I've scored first place four times so far, without hacking. FLEX
@BenAV I pity them, because these are real life loser who are good at nothing, so they needed to cheat to win something.
@liljmoore don't be sad, people who cheat are loser in real life, just pity them.
@Yosher those people are loser, just let them be. It's just a video games, real life success is way more important.
@tka060681 Yeah it's just a video game but it would be nice if we could actually properly enjoy all the elements of said game without hicks like these ruining it.
Hackers are definitely in the game and it's a bit disheartening. I've witnessed cheating in my own matches but it seems rare.
@Fazermint
It's going beyond the rankings, they're getting max coins at the start of the match which absolutely gives them a massively unfair advantage. I saw an example of this on youtube where a player just kept using items without running out of coins.. and another where a hacker got 5 rows of coins on his screen within seconds of starting the match. That's basically unlimited time and unlimited items. Imagine just being able to spin the roulette for endless starmen. If it were just the rankings, you'd be right. The way the article is written makes it sound like it's purely a leaderboard problem but it's a bit more than that. Judging by the titles of some of the deleted youtube hacking videos, the hacks also allow you to do things like swim anywhere, kill other players, etc in addition to unlimited coins. So this is definitely a bigger issue than leaderboards.
EDIT: I forgot to point out that the way this hack seems to work is that, by demonstrated in the youtube video I've watched (and backed up by others on reddit), if the hacker still manages to die, someone else can actually obtain the hackers coins. I saw a speedrunner beat a hacker on youtube and he got all of the hackers coins, it was pretty hilarious. This makes me wonder how many of those leader positions are actually hackers or just people who beat a hacker and got an insane amount of coins. They're probably all hackers though since the way the "money pot" in this game works is you don't get all of the coins but a fraction. The number for wiping out a hacker seems to be 25k, but someone on reddit mentioned getting over 50k by beating a hacker. When this happens it also impacts the level of the player, as the speedrunner went from level 97 to like 35* in a single match because of that hacker.
I have no problem with hacking when it only affects one's own gameplay or within a closed group play setting when it has been agreed upon. But in online play? That's terribly unfair and is bound to get you the wrong kind of attention.
Just play the game fairly.
Are they hacking or exploiting decades old bugs?
At this point any bug left in the game, like the 3-1 infinite lives those are fair to use. Nintendo had 35 years to fix it, can't go claiming they didn't know.
Who cheats on a 35 year old game? Someone must be desperate lol.
@Big_Fudge Those people know the difference between the world burning and cheating at a [redacted] video game. They're not settling for the latter.
@Ghostchip yep randomly happened to me out of nowhere. Was just me and one other player left then suddenly millions of lakitus and bloopers etc, I had 120+ coins and got 3 pow blocks in a row and they all just cam back instantly. 100% someone hacking.
@StevenG Arika, who developed this version for Nintendo (as well as Teris 99) built the game from the ground up. Exploits like this are likely to be brand new.
@StevenG It's not 35 years old, the game just came out. It shares some similarities to the NES game, but this isn't the NES game here and there's no emulator, the game was built from the ground up with physics that are wholly unique. It wouldn't really work with the old game, Mario's enemy bounce height was way too weak to perform the awesome combos needed here.
I finally got a first place yesterday. I did notice a couple on top of the board with 99,999 coins. Figured it was some sort of cheating.
what is the point? look at my name at the top of leader board?
@jorel262 The point is they have small wangs
The sociopaths are at it again!
@Fazermint not really since the same guy with 99,999 coins is still #1.i get you dont care.but some people it does.only people that cheat only means 1 thing they suck so bad they have to cheat.lol
@StevenG cant do the 1 up thing is this game.must have been taken out.i did try it
@Yanina I mean, you can only use the coins you've earned in the current run. I don't see how you can be this ignorant of the topic at hand and still believe others who know what they're talking about are idiots. Goddamn tool.
Edit: Ah they removed their comment, said I was dumb for not having played the game.
@Yanina I got one win, the a second place, then 3 wins in a row last Friday.... Stopped playing.. gets old fast... And the unlocking of levels is kind of tedious.
Yeah, let's take this Nintendo account that I pay for to be online and is literally linked to everything I own on Switch and shove it up at the top with an unreasonable score. I'm sure no bad can come of this.
This isn't a phone game that no one pays attention to guys, you're getting caught because you gave yourself away. I'm thinking someone is hacking the packets on the way to the score server and changing the numbers
@doctorhino ist this game out yet?
