Re: Review: Super Mario 3D All-Stars - Three Of Mario's Greatest Adventures Come To Switch

@carlos82 @JohnnyC That's the question, do you review the games, or do you review this as a remaster/collection? IMO it should be reviewed as the latter. If I want to look up reviews for those three games, I can already do so. I specifically want to know the changes made to them, additional options, etc. And that doesn't sound like a 10/10 to me. The games are brilliant, but this collection is as bare bones as it can be.

@Menardi Regarding the choice of platforms, you have to remember that all games are developed on PC, so a PC release is quite easy. After that it becomes a question of who has the biggest user base, that's currently PS4. PS4 and Xbox are also quite similar to PC in terms of architecture, and are on average easier to develop for than Switch, and I think that also plays a role.

It's the reason why nearly all games target PC, PS4 is also a popular choice. Xbox is an easy choice after that because it has a similar architecture, but has a smaller user base (possibly even smaller than Switch, but MS doesn't release sales numbers anymore). Switch does have one big advantage, and that's like you said better visibility. It won't be drowned in a sea of other options. But I think that the different system architecture is a bigger hurdle than you may think.

@Menardi It's a risk not everyone is willing to take. You have to remember that the N64 didn't do amazing either, and that's over 20 years ago, so you also have to assume that every Rare fan still owns a Nintendo console and doesn't have a PC or PS4 at the same time. And of course that's assuming this only appeals to Rare fans as well. Everyone can enjoy any type of game.

Also, this only two ex-Rare employees worked on this game if I'm not mistaken.

@0nett They're still fixing the game, little glitches, bugs, making updates, new costumes, preparing for season 2. And remember, they're just a small team, and they never expected this kind of success. They're hardly keeping up with the two platforms they are on right now. I don't see the situation getting better if they also have to port them to other systems and maintain those as well. Small steps. It'll come to other systems eventually. Probably later this year.

@FragRed If you haven't already, you can try PS+ for free for two weeks, and download the game with it. That's what I did, and I'm essentially playing the game for free now.

It's a €20 game, so I may put that towards a 3-month PS+ sub instead, so I can continue to keep playing. I already got the game for free, so it's not really a loss in that case.
