Re: Physical Version Of Untitled Goose Game Won't Include Multiplayer On The Cart

@Yosher I don't think we have concise examples yet. Maybe for individual games. The only console that had its store shut down is the Wii, but digital games weren't really a thing on the Wii, since you only had Wiiware games. Best bet is to hope that some will be able to hack the system and keep it running on a private server after its dead. But given the scale of such undertaking, I don't know if that's possible. Best case scenario is classic ROM files, and downloading those to your system. And maybe setting up private servers for online play.

Re: Random: Epic Goes To War With Apple, Asks Players To "Join The Fight" And "Free Fortnite"

@N1ntendodo And that's that last thing I'd recommend anyone doing. However, in light of the massive support for Epic on the internet, I think that taking a step back and looking at it from both sides is the best thing to do.

But I realise that's difficult. Especially since Epic launched this whole campaign to drum up all the 10-year-olds to boycott Apple. It's ridiculous IMO. And people will defend it, because they make Fortnite.

Re: Random: Epic Goes To War With Apple, Asks Players To "Join The Fight" And "Free Fortnite"

@vanYth In a normal situation it all goes through the platform holder first. So Nintendo, Sony and MS take a 30% share on micro-transactions, just like they do on games. But @BulkSlash suggested Epic is getting a discounts on consoles, so they may already be an exception. But in any other circumstance, the platform holder takes a cut on MTX. Otherwise there would be no profit for platform holders in free-to-play games that live in the revenue from MTX alone.

Re: Random: Epic Goes To War With Apple, Asks Players To "Join The Fight" And "Free Fortnite"

@BulkSlash I didn't know Epic gets a discount on consoles. If true, that shows you the kind of leverage they have. Since most games are made in Unreal Engine these days, Epic already have a monopoly. Companies will have to comply otherwise Epic can easily stop optimising for their system. And people are cheering when Epic announces they want even more control of the market...

Re: Random: Epic Goes To War With Apple, Asks Players To "Join The Fight" And "Free Fortnite"

Octane

@telepathy2000 Yeah, Nintendo takes 30% as well. That's pretty much the standard. Sony, Microsoft, Steam, GOG all take around 30% IIRC. You can argue it should be less, but circumventing the system entirely is basically like tax evasion. Apple is in their right here; if you want to make use of the iOS infrastructure to sell your games, you can't expect them to allow you to do so for free.

@patbacknitro18 No, that's the thing, it's the illusion. That's why this stuff works and is so brilliant. Because Epic knows that all the consumers will side with them. But in the end it's just a fight between Epic and Apple.

Realistically, this means that Apple will see no revenue from Fortnite/Epic if all their payments bypass Apple's system. So why allow Epic to make billions on your ecosystem? In a way, Apple has every right to block them. Like I said, this is like tax evasion, but on another level. And their using the general public to fight it out for them.

Re: Random: Epic Goes To War With Apple, Asks Players To "Join The Fight" And "Free Fortnite"

Octane

@patbacknitro18 It's more like Epic found a way to circumvent Apple's payment system and now tricks consumers into buying all of this (pun intended). It's not about lowering the cost for consumers, it's all about generating more revenue for Epic.

Just look at the numbers: Apple takes 30% of revenue generated. Epic bypasses Apple and reduces prices by 20%. In a way they're just screwing over Apple for their own good, because Epic's net revenue will be higher now.

And look, neither companies need the money, both are greedy AF, but there's something to be said about using one ecosystem (iOS), without paying for it at all (since Fortnite is a free game too). So this is more like tax evasion.

Re: Video: The Switch Is A Wii U Port Machine, And That's A Good Thing

@elpardo1984 Well, definitely. But it's still a valid point I think. It does feel like Nintendo is using the ported Switch games to fill out their release schedule. I mean, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the reason why we haven't had Mario Kart 9 yet. New Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is the reason why we haven't had a 2D Mario yet. Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is the reason why we haven't seen a DK game yet. Is Pikmin 3 Deluxe the reason why we're not getting Pikmin 4? I really hope not.

Additionally, I think that the price of these ports is also way too high, even if there is a new bonus level or two (I mean, I'd like to play the extra content, but I'm not buying the whole game again just to access it, so I wish it was made available as standalone content as well).

In hindsight it would've been a lot better to just skip the Wii U and buy them all on Switch. But it is what it is. It just stings a bit that the people who bought the Wii U and all their games are now in this position. And they were probably their most hardcore fans as well.

And yeah, the lack of new games doesn't really help. Or the fact that there's nothing on the horizon. Maybe they'll announce a brand new game next week? Or maybe they don't. It would help if there's something to look forward to. BOTW 2 and Metroid Prime 4 are coming, but who knows when. They could be two years away for all we know!

@playstation_king In defence of TLOU Remastered, it was only €50. It came with the €15 DLC (total package was €75 on PS3). And it was barely a year old. But yeah, like you said, it dropped in price quickly. Nevertheless I think that a game like Shadow of the Colossus (2018) is a better example. Fully remade from the ground up; but it was only €40. Microsoft even allows you to play older games for free!

In all honesty. I'm looking forward to their next console. Only because I know they can't use the same port strategy again, and they have to rely on completely new games.

Re: Switch Software Sales Are Comfortably Beating The PS2's, The Best-Selling Console Of All Time

Octane

@tonyp1987 Nintendo systems are great for Nintendo game sales. I can understand third parties not flocking to it, if they know that they'll get outsold by the next Let's Go Pokemon Brick & Tile. Even if said third party game offers a way better game. If you're being drowned out by first party games, why even bother?

I don't know why. Maybe people buy Nintendo systems primarily for Nintendo games. I know I do. Because they're usually missing quite a lot of games. But as a result, I don't buy the third party games that make it over to the system, because I'll buy them on other consoles instead.

Re: Pikmin 3 Deluxe Officially Announced For Switch, Includes All DLC And New Content

Octane

@Ralizah I don't know. If there's no new content, it's a lot easier to ignore. They put in new content, knowing very well the fans still want to play that, but it's probably content that can be finished in an hour, but it's locked behind the rest of the game. That's kinda scummy in its own right. It would be fine if they offered it as a standalone thing though. But I don't expect that to happen.

As a Wii U owner, I pretty much got all the first party titles. This Switch generation feels like a lot of waiting until all of that is ported over for the good stuff to come. The Switch is probably going to be the Nintendo console of which I own the least amount of games if this trend continues.

Re: Pikmin 3 Deluxe Officially Announced For Switch, Includes All DLC And New Content

Octane

@Ralizah €50 for a year old game that was €60 + €15 DLC. And it got a graphical overhaul as well.

This should've either included all three games as remastered versions, or it should be half the price IMO.

And yes, there is new content. And that part sucks, because you can't play it without buying the whole game for full price again. Though if their other Wii U ports are anything to go by, it won't be worth the asking price anyway. But it still kinda sucks.

Re: Pikmin 3 Deluxe Officially Announced For Switch, Includes All DLC And New Content

Octane

@sixrings Yeah, but I don't know. In an era when Sony releases plenty of €40 titles, and when MS even offers older games for free. I don't think that €60 ports fly well anymore. But maybe I'm mistaken. It's a pretty low move though. Selling it full price on the Switch it one thing, but removing the game from the Wii U eShop to force people to buy the expensive version on Switch is another.
