Samus will return this October in an all-new outing on the Nintendo Switch titled Metroid Dread. It's being co-developed by the talented team over at MercurySteam - the same developer who worked on Metroid: Samus Returns for 3DS.
In the lead-up to this new adventure, Nintendo has been sharing Metroid history on a special website and sharing this information in short bursts over on its social media channels.
Its latest post on Twitter highlights the SNES classic Super Metroid - showing off some absolutely stunning high-resolution artwork of Samus, her Gunship, Ridley and Kraid. You may have already seen this artwork in the Metroid Dread Report.
If all of this has got you in the mood for some Super Metroid action, you can always check out this classic title via Nintendo's Switch Online service. It also happens to be Metroid's 35th anniversary this year - which is another excuse to play through all of Samus' classic adventures again.
What do you think of the above high-res artwork? Does it bring back any memories? Leave a comment down below.

Man, that artwork is beautiful.
Kraid looks disgustingly pregnant I love it
Visually stunning! Super Metroid is still my favorite 2D entry, though some of the controls haven't aged the best. Namely the wall jump.
Gunship lookin sexy for reals
I'm so hyped. HYPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!¡!¡!¡!
Memories of poring through the old instructional manual, which I still have. I miss having these manuals with new games. Remembering other great manuals like Ocarina of Time, DKC games, etc - I rarely ever used them for their actual 'instructions' but loved seeing the artwork
@Hav I miss them too. I still have my Ocarina of Time manual, it's hidden in my childhood photo album. It drives me nuts that there's a space holder for a manual in the Switch cases but never any manuals.
Now give us a damn new Metroid game!!
@Jmjfrank I know what you mean about the Switch manual holders. Salt in the wound! Also, I've still got almost all my old manuals from the SNES/N64 era. As a kid I kept them in a Whitman's chocolate box. Kind of weird, but it was the perfect size to store them all together! I still keep them in it.
@Jmjfrank if you have any desire to purchase physical indie games, many of them actually have manuals in the case.
I just wish they would share the whole series with the Switch. I'm not even asking for semi-freebies on NSO. Toss 'em up on the e-shop and I'll buy 'em again.
I don't usually feel that way but we are talking about Metroid here. Exceptions can be made.
@JackDeschain I can live without Metroid 2 (A Samus Returns port would be nice I guess). But a Fusion/Zero Mission double pack would be an instant buy for me!
I made a poster from the Metroid II Return of Samus art. I love this style. Just beautiful.
@tseliot They're giving us one though. Two in fact although the second one has been MIA for a while
Must be a hint that Metroid 4 will coming out by the end of the year..
These are some slick quality scans.
Unfortunately since they were shared via Twitter, they may be high-resolution but they're heavily compressed.
It's a bother.
Kraid looks gross but it's one of my favorite Melee stages.
I haven't got into the Metroid franchise yet (this will hopefully change once Dread releases), but I gotta say Ridley is such a.. quaint name for a scary looking alien creature that I think was supposedly meant to invoke fear.
Iirc Samus' birth parents also have names that don't really help with building immersion / suspension of players' disbelief in an otherwise awe-inspiring universe.
All of those are beautiful and I like the shiny look to Samus
@Jmjfrank
So true!! Finally someone is pointing it out!
@andykara2003
Yeah… probably not 😆
Playing this on Snes app. My favorite Metroid
@mlj11 maybe it's because I was a kid when I was playing Super Metroid, but knowing exactly who he was and knowing I was approaching his chamber... It was such a high level of tension and anxiety, and then add his battle music, the name didn't matter.
Why is Ridley orange though, when you can see him in purple in-game moments after starting the game?
I always loved the artwork of Super Metroid at the time, being a kid, it was a very alluring game. I think Fusion and Zero Mission are better, but Super Metroid is still a good game.
Is it just me or does it look like a Poke' ball in that container on the title screen. (dead center)
@Jmjfrank That's fair, and totally understandable! The experiences that we get as kids always leave the strongest impressions
Gorgeous stuff. I'm totally going to get a giant back piece of that Ridley art.
@TheFrenchiestFry Was about to say the same thing lmao
@andykara2003 Metroid 4 came out in 2002.
@mlj11 Ridley's name is an homage to Ridley Scott. Alien was a big influence on the series.
Wow, that’s real good artwork
@mattcoz Yes the remake of that one 👍
@mattcoz Yup I had found out about that. Unfortunately it's just not a scary name befitting the creature's design.
@mlj11 A merciless serial killer may be named Carl. It doesn't fit, but that's just how things are.
My favorite Metroid.
I’m replaying it but the problem is I now have enough knowledge of tricks to sequence break but not enough knowledge of the game to know when it’s useful
So nintendo doesn't know when they released Super Metroid I'm North America? Really?
I still baffled why physical releases doesn't include a manual (or a little poster, map, etc)... it will add so much value to it. Ill buy so much less digital games.
Miss them so much (except for the Capcom ones, those where awful!)
@Devlind I think we all know that merciless serial killers are generally named by their parents who weren't expecting their kids to grow up and become monsters though?
I don't understand what point you're trying to make, especially since it looks like you agree that a run-of-the-mill name "doesn't fit" a scary looking video game alien bad guy meant to inspire fear.
What's next? Are you gonna tell me that "Timmy" is a perfectly good choice of name for the villain in the next Predator movie?
