It still only feels like yesterday that we all plonked our bums down to watch Nintendo's E3 2019 showcase, where the company revealed the existence of an upcoming sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Well, thanks to Nintendo Life's own video producer Felix Sanchez (and also a calendar), we now know that it's been 1000 days since that exciting day, and we feel, well... older.
How could this happen? Wasn't it 2019, like, yesterday? Well, like most, the conclusion we've come to is that we've simply blocked out most of 2020 and 2021, because reasons. It's a frightening number, though, to be sure, and the only consolation we have at the moment is that the game should, in theory, release at some point in the next 299 days, before the end of 2022.
Having said that, 2022 is looking packed, so there's every chance Nintendo could push its release into 2023. Let's not think about that for the moment, though. We all need some hope, after all.
Just for fun, we've also taken a look at a few other big games and calculated the number of days since each initial announcement. Interestingly, it's the three youngest ones that are scheduled for this year:
- Metroid Prime 4: 1728 days
- Bayonetta 3: 1551 days
- Splatoon 3: 383 days
- Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet: 8 days
So, do you feel old now? Are you excited for the sequel to Breath of the Wild? Let us know in the comments and feel free to check out everything we know about Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 so far to whet that appetite.

Yes, I’m feeling old. Tnx for reminding me I am!
Grmbl…..
1000 days and still no concrete release date.
@RubyCarbuncle What do you mean, it’s coming ~2022~
Personally, I'm fine with the wait. There's so much Zelda content on the switch to tide me over. Metroid however...
(ole man speech) I feel old but for other reasons. My back hurts, get outta here.
You kids and your fancy Switches.
On a serious note, more than a release date I want to know the title.
@BabyYoda71 That's not concrete. Concrete is telling us WHEN in 2022 and that is something we still don't know.
1000 days since botw 2 announced. It’s been 1,728 days since they announced Beyond good and evil 2. Which one will drop first?? Lol
For a game that will look pretty much the same as the first botw, 1000 days are a lot.
Quit ‘cher bellyaching.
Poor Zelda’s been batting off Ganon for over 36525 days and you don’t hear her complaining... much.
This year's release schedule is pretty great, I wouldn't mind if they pushed it to next year.
Maybe they should hold it back and make sure there aren't any areas like Korok Forest in terms of performance. By the time they were fixed I was done with those areas and they were slightly ruined.
Oh please just let it be released in 2022, no pushbacks.
People act like they're Zelda waiting for Link to wake up from that 100 year nap
Crazy how BOTW2 is taking as long as the original game, even though it's reusing the same engine. Refining that engine was the bulk of BOTW's development time.
Using large numbers can make it seem like at long time...it's only been 1,440,000 minutes and counting...nearing 3 years. Horizons sequel took 5 years after the 1st release. That's 1,826 days give or take. Games are hard to make aren't they?
Time sure flies when you're not playing the Breath of the Wild sequel.
8 days since Pokemon Violet and Scarlet got announced?
WOW.
I feel like an old man.
Dang, that is a pretty long time. But it's good that they don't seem to be rushing it, and I'm 100% positive that we'll see more at E3 or whatever their June conference is.
Could be worse.
@Purgatorium You’re correct, they could cancel it. That’s worse case scenario
It'll be ready when it's ready. Looking forward to it but in no panic for it either. Have enough on my playlist as it is.
@RubyCarbuncle Also between Xenoblade 3 confirmed for September and Pokemon Scarlet/Violet pretty much confirmed for November 18th, I could see BotW 2 being delayed to 2023.
I was feeling old long before it was announced.
I've given up hype for titles without firm release dates. When they come, they come. I can't do anything about it.
That being said, 1000 days feels like a long time for even a title reveal for BotW2, and 1728 days of Metroid Prime 4 hurts when you think about it.
Here's for the next 1000!!!
I don’t feel old, just upset lol.
For real tho, I’m fine with waiting until 2023 if it gets delayed. I’d just hope they’d bring Wind Waker and Twilight Princess over to the Switch in the meantime.
If BOTW2 does release this year as intended… that would be 3 huge open-word games from Nintendo for the holiday season between Xenoblade 3, Pokémon, and Zelda. That’s bananas.
Just 1,000 more days to go 😂.
I had two children since the announcement.
Old? Who you callin old?
@Grumblevolcano I'm going to make a guess. It will be the October title this year.
Appearing from under a pile of dust
I've been feeling old since THAT 3DS video, thx rubbing more salt on the wound
#BelongsInaMuseum
@RubyCarbuncle I was attempting to be sarcastic… speaking online is hard haha
@Grumblevolcano Oh God I hope not.

@SalvorHardin
Yes, the untitled sequel to Breath of the Wild will be a sequel to Breath of the Wild and not a sequel to Skyward Sword.
"...while Aonuma keeps telling us how great Skyward Sword is..."
What do you expect him to say? That Skyward Sword sucks? Aonuma is the producer for Zelda - it's his job to say every entry in the series (outside of maybe the CDi entries 😆) is great, whether you or I personally agree with him or not.
@Alex32 I'm actually shocked it's been over a week!?
That Metroid number……let’s just give up on this ever arriving on this gen.
1000 days past and 361 days to go (I'm assuming the game launches no later than March 3, 2023)
And I still haven't tackled a single Beast.
When they are reusing the world, characters and engine, three years is plenty of time. Keep in mind this was in development at least a few months before they announced it. So a little over three years. If it is delayed until 2023 this better fix every flaw botw has.
Can't say I don't wish it was out today, but if you spend every day waiting for a game's release you will be bitter and disappointed when it finally comes out. Just do something else and be pleasantly surprised when it drops. Otherwise it's just looking for things that aren't there and letting time go by. BOTW took long enough to come out, the sequel may take longer.
Do we feel old? I remember when the original Legend of Zelda came out. Yes, I feel old.
I pretty much feel the same about it as it did when it was announced, kind of intellectually interested because I very much enjoy the first one but not really jumping up and down with joy because I didn't really leave BotW wanting another game like it.
The Covid-19 pandemic also added time to the clock, via 2020-2021. I suspect BotW2 will make an appearance this year, or next year. I think It really depends on how much delay the title sustained vs. how much is complete, since Nintendo is not likely to mention it, unless they have some beta gameplay footage, or decent-length cinematic to show off. The only exception would be a title card, similar to Metroid Prime 4, just to remind people that it still exists, and is in development.
Edit: There are also the possibilities of Nintendo, to get it out faster, cutting not-so-easily noticed corners, like code optimization, and fixing it later via updates, or letting the game simmer, releasing it later for the purpose of Switch sales post-5yrs into the console lifespan.
@Alex32 Hahahaha
Too bad.
I sold the game in October 2021 as I have no interest with Zelda games.
It was my big mistake to buy a game on whim.
@JasmineDragon So do I, I saw it in Boots. Hahaha why the heck was there a video game section in pharmacy? I don't know why, but it looked so cool in that gold box & there was a monitor above with a video of the game playing. Can't remember the other games that were there.... I guess Zelda was the rock star for me even back then!
I don't know if anyone's heard of Project Re:Fantasy, but it's just as bad as Metroid Prime 4.
It was announced in 2017 and is the Persona team's next big IP. There's not been a single gameplay trailer or piece of proper news in all these years. It's not even known what the gameplay will be like or what the story is about. There's only a few pieces of concept art and nothing more.
The director comments every now and then with "things are going smoothly" and apparently he said last year that it might come out this year, but I doubt it lol
Thats it. Development hell, vaporware, canceled silently, never to be seen again. 1000 days is 1000 too many. 🙃😒🤡
and I will probably be another 1000 days until it finally releases
@HammerGalladeBro EXACTLY
@Anti-Matter Dang, that’s unfortunate that you didn’t enjoy it. I guess not every game is for everyone huh?
@Captain-N I’m just about certain that we will see the game this year, but I’m only about 90% sure we’ll actually get it this year (still pretty optimistic compared to many).
@Phantom_R That’s what gets me so excited for the sequel. Surely they’re doing SOMETHING amazing, right?
@P-Man Yeah, like you, I'm almost certain we will see BotW2 this year, in some form. The Legend Of Zelda is one of Nintendo's showpiece ip (intellectual property/properties), so I imagine we'll see it during E3, or possibly during a surprise Direct featuring the game, or (a Direct) exclusively about it.
Well, it's much better than the wait period for Metroid Prime 4 Game 😳
I'm not good at conversions. How many are 1000 days in potatoes?
It's been 13,324 days since Super Mario Brothers was released. Now do you feel old? 😝
And even back then it wasn't called Breath of the Wild 2.
No way! A game takes time to make, I wouldn't have ever guessed!
I rather them take there time with the game, and wile I might not like it, I will usually like the end result.
And the "most unnecessary piece of news of the month" award goes to...
At 1000 days and counting. It’s getting to the ridiculous stage now. Are they trying to compete with George RR Martin? Maybe they should reveal further down the development cycle because this situation is just stupid
After all the wait, the real title for the BOTW 2 will be finally revealed in 2022 as it is the norm for then, and we wait another 1000 days 🙂 for the real release.
@FinalSmashGamer What's wrong? You didn't finish your sentence.
Well considering I just started BOTW I am ok with that lol
@old-dad I hope you're gonna have a good time with it. I just started a new game for the third time, and I still find things that I didn't notice the other times I played it.
@NorwegianMate. Loving it ! Just get lost with so much to do. About 20hrs in and i have not touched most of the game.
I don't care how long it takes them as long as they put out a good product. Maybe they don't want to show us more until they feel great about what they're making.
This actually makes me hopeful that they can still have some big surprises up their sleeves. Right now the trailers felt like BotW DLC. I can’t wait to see what the new hook of the game will be.
Looking at the history of Zelda games I wouldn't be surprised if this will be a dual release on the Switch and new Hardware again. So 2023? I hope I'm wrong though.
It's good that people haven't got too high expectations for this sequel. Some fools even think it's nothing but a glorified dlc pack.
Here's the thing, they're using the same engine as before and the development STILL takes this long. The game has got to be huge, and full of new gameplay mechanics we're not yet aware of. I'm predicting the lower expectations to be shattered.
