We all knew what the video was about when we saw the thumbnail and ominous title - "Launch Timing Update". If Nintendo was announcing a release date for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, it would be either headlining a Nintendo Direct or drop in a trailer with an exciting action shot for a thumbnail. We'd get some official shots drop into our inbox shortly after the fact...
But nope, it was a black background and white text, the classic 'disappointment within' look, preparing us for the inevitable delay to Spring 2023.
To be fair, at least Nintendo hasn't copied the CD Projekt Red approach like so many others, tweeting a letter with a bright yellow background. As with previous delays in the series, we had series producer Eiji Aonuma making an appearance and breaking the news as gently as he could. Heck, he even got a sharp-lookin' new haircut for the occasion.
Nintendo also couldn't resist the urge to drop in a little tease, which was a genuinely cool move. It was a close up look at Link in the 'sky' world; he's rocking tattered clothes, long nails and a gnarly broken Master Sword. What does it all mean? Well, that's for fans to figure out!
The delay hurts, yes — especially for those of us who had dared to dream of spending this year's Holiday season snuggled up with a brand new Zelda adventure — but some of us are smug right now, as plenty predicted this would happen.
Assuming it does hit that Spring 2023 launch window (and you can be sure that Nintendo will want to squeeze it in before the end of the financial year), it will be six years after its predecessor
The Legend of Zelda mainline 3D games pretty much always miss their initial release targets, and producing a sequel to one of the all-time great games will have Nintendo striving for the very highest of standards. Assuming it does hit that Spring 2023 launch window (and you can be sure that Nintendo will want to squeeze it in before the end of the financial year), it will be six years after its predecessor.
As disappointed as we may be, there's also excitement that the development team is taking the time to do something truly special. As a seasoned game developer once said (maybe), a rushed game is forever a turkey, unless it's patched up the wazoo; a delayed game is off the hook from Day One, innit. Might be paraphrasing that one, but you get the gist.
Anyway, it was only in January that we posted a cheeky poll asking if you all genuinely thought the game would land in 2022. As it turns out, just under half of the 11,000 readers that responded had faith of a sort, even if more of you went for the '80% chance' option:
So, let's have some fresh polls to think about. Firstly, a repeat of last time for fun — were you a smarty pants that looked at series precedent and said "nah, not hitting that date"? Be honest, because we'll know if you're not!
Beyond that, how disappointed are you about the delay? And do you think BOTW2 — or whatever it ends up being called — will land on its new target of Spring 2023? (Let's say that's from 1st March to 30th June, although like we say, we'd expect it to appear before the end of the 2022-2023 financial year.)
Have at it in the polls and comments below!

It will release spring next year with a new version of the Switch. A launch year with Metroid Prime 4 and Mario + Rabbids. Three power houses to show the capabilities of the new hardware.
Maybe a new Mario too, but I think Zelda has been delayed to make room for that new Mario to be released this year to coincide with the movie.
As Miyamoto once said, “Drinking Mr Muscle straight from the source makes me a big boy”
Perhaps BotW 2 will coincide with a new hardware's launch, just like TP amd BotW did after years of delays..
It was going to be a late 2022 release anyway, so spring 2023 isn't THAT bad.
To be honest I'm ok with the delay. I have lots of games that are coming this year, and considering the quality of Nintendo in their franchise, they can take all the time they need. Fix the game, polish all that needs polishing, and avoid crunch time for your workers.
It’s been 5 years since BotW and would’ve been nearly 6 if it came out at the end of the year…I thought it would happen this year for sure. Did start to doubt it a bit when Pokémon and Xenoblade were announced for the end of the year though, but I didn’t think a summer release was out of the question
I actually never voted on that other poll, so I can now do it and pretend it was right all along!
@nessisonett Lol. It's funny to go to randomquotegenerator.org and imagine Miyamoto actually said the quote it generates.
I did given the lack of communication but that doesn't mean I can't express my disappointment/annoyance at it.
I was talking to my bro and I was telling him if Nintendo pushed this to 23. When I told him I was like it's not like Nintendo is hurting this year with the line up they got. So not surprised.
When Zelda wasn't mentioned at the most recent Direct, I felt it was a 50/50 shot for its appearance at E3.
Either we'd get the full blowout of information, with a release date for the holidays, or another delay would be shared with the promise of a future, focused Zelda Direct.
Didn't expect Nintendo to just drop a 2 minute update video out of the blue.
Yup not surprised. Not sad either. Plenty of games to keep me busy until then. I could make some time for a WW HD port though
@Browny Nintendo never show big 3D Legend of Zelda at Nintendo Direct, only on E3 Direct/TGA.
There's so much out and we'd rather it was later and another masterpiece. These things take time so it has to be perfect. We'll get another trailer and a title this year though.
@Friendly
"I’m going to defeat you with the power of friendship! ... And this knife I found."
-Zelda probably
Hope this means they’re just optimising the engine for Switch, since it was already dated when part 1 came out. Imagine running around the deku tree with a buttersmooth performance. That would make me want to discover that world a second time.
Meh. It's not like I was really anticipating it anyway.. Not unless we see a gameplay trailer that reveals actual dungeons.
BotW 1 was extremely shallow imo so i'm not that excited for the sequel.
It's cruel to give my backlog hope like this, Nintendo! To be fair, it wouldn't have been a Zelda game without a delay lol. Loads to play and it means Xenoblade 3 gets all the limelight. So yeah...I'm sad but my wallet isn't lol.
i always expected Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 to be delayed to 2023, given that Pokémon Scarlet e Pokémon Violet is the big holiday game for Switch this year.
They will release it to coincide with the release of BOTW and Switch, March 2023 I am 100% confident.
The minute Pokemon Scarlet and Violet were announced, I had an inkling. Why on earth would you release two gargantuan games within the space of at most 3 months? Especially when those two games are the next generation of Pokemon and a sequel to one of the most loved Zelda games in history? It just didn't really make sense and now we know they thought the same thing.
Very! I do not like these news! They are too slow.
Delayed for the launch of a new version of Switch or Nintendo’s next console.
Just like BOTW was delayed on WiiU and then it was announced for the new Nintendo Switch console.
Every Zelda game gets delayed.
This one had a very abstract "2022" release.
So no surprise there.
Gives me time to actually finish up Breath of the Wild too, so I'm not bothered. ^^
After ER it was probably a given. It's a brand new day in a brand new age.
Im neither surprised nor unhappy. But can we get WW HD & TP HD and oracle remakes in the meantime?
I honestly don’t care. I trust the team. When it’s ready it’s ready and there might be a bigger reason it is being delayed… A la the original BOTW🤔
I wanted it this year, but at least now xenoblade 3 won’t get put away like DE did. I thought it would come out this year but I don’t think new hardware is coming out until 2024
see y'all in March 2023, for another delay announcement!
No chance it sticks to "spring" 2023 it will likely get delayed again because Nintendo will need a big holiday game next year and BOTW 2 is all they really have that fits that big November holiday game slot
I figured it could get delayed but was more on the side of thinking it'd make 2022. Unlike 95% of the internet, I can admit when I'm wrong.
@Fizza Yeah I agree.. but A Link Between Worlds, Super Mario 3D World, and Pokémon X/Y all came out holiday 2013… so it was possible🤪
I feel disappointment due to the delay more than some others here because I personally am not interested in most of what Nintendo has so far announced for 2022. It especially stung coming on the heels of Advance Wars' "indefinite" delay, because I was really looking forward to it Kirby's okay so far and I plan to give Mario Strikers a go, and of course I'm already signed up for MK8's Booster Course Pass. Beyond that, however, I have never had any interest in Pokemon, the first two "mainline" Xenoblade Chronicles games couldn't hold my interest so I'm kind of ambivalent about XC3, and Splatoon's "culture" just turns me off. I am looking forward to several third-party releases such as Live-A-Live, Mario & Rabbids 2, the TMNT compilation, and others, but personally BotW 2's delay creates a void of truly flagship-quality games in Nintendo's lineup where I am concerned.
That said, assuming the delay actually is about refining and improving BotW 2 as much as possible before launch (as opposed to say, lining its release up for a "hybrid" launch alongside the Switch's successor), I can live with it. The end result will almost certainly be a polar opposite of 343's Halo Infinite dumpster fire. Disappointing anxious fans by delaying a flagship game in order to make it the best it can be is ALWAYS better than rushing it out before it's truly ready.
Eh, all 3D Zelda games get delayed...so, yeah. Doesn't bother me, I'm also not entirely sure if I'll get this game or not yet anyways.
I don’t mind as long as we get another big AAA for near the end of year.
I talking AAA in house, maybe. Mario Odyssey 2 or something a like.
I mean I’m enjoying Kirby right now but it’s only March.
I can't really be disappointed when they've shown almost nothing from the game so far and what little they did show just looked like more of the 1st game which I'm not really fond of
I was really hoping it was going to be this year. Spring is a busy time for me at work and December is usually slower and I take a lot of leave. Was really looking forward to having nothing on my plate and to just sit down and play BOTW2. As it is I guess it will give me something to play while in hotel rooms in 2023
The delay seems longer than it is really.
Let’s say they were about to release November 2022 then said sorry you have to wait until March 2023
I would not sound so bad a delay.
It's definitely a drag. But it's not the end of the world. I have loads I need to finish and catch up on as it is. Not to mention Mario Strikers, Splatoon 3 and Pokèmon later on for sure. I also forgot there was some stuff from the last Direct that I'm interested in (The Portal Collection being one). Plus I'm sure we'll have other surprises throughout the year.
Wind Waker HD on Switch. This year. That is all I have to say.
I was actually hoping for the delay so they could release it on March 3rd 2023. Six years to the day of the release of BOTW snd the switch itself
I love Breath of the Wild, and can't wait for its sequel. But I got a shelf with 100+ Switch games on it and its going to take me forever to get through them. So I can wait.
Although the switch might be my favorite system of all time I am really starting to play my PS5 and Xbox S allot more. Very disappointed but I would rather have a better game. Time for a new system. I bet BOTW will launch new system and be on both systems.
The title got leaked, so Nintendo changed the title and are now reworking the entire game to suit the new title. Classic Nintendo switcheroo.
I think they'll release it in Spring 2023 as a dual launch title for the current gen Switch and its successor the Super Switch/Switch 2/Switch Pro.
I had previously commented in another article that I thought this year we'd at least hear about BotW2, if it didn't release. I'm not surprised about the delay. There are potentially many reasons for this.
I imagine Nintendo wanted to get this news out of the way, so it's a bad news item that can't be new information at E3. It can't be a black eye on Nintendo during E3, because they have already told us.
Another possibility is Nintendo is artificially stretching out releases. This may be to prolong the Switch, or could be in the wings for a dual console release, similar to Twilight Princess, and BOTW.
The opportunity to make the game better is good. Nintendo will likely make use of that time.
@KBuckley27 Feels way to early to be making that kind of prediction. We really don't know what they have brewing for 2023 besides this game.
I think the writing was on the wall when it skipped the February direct. I like that Nintendo is keeping their cards close to their chests. While not having a lot to go on can be frustrating, it also keeps the hype train firmly on the rails. Nintendo games usually resemble the finished product when footage is shown so their coyness with Zelda suggests to me a commitment to deliver something that will absolutely meet whatever expectations they set with marketing.
There hasn't been an original Zelda game in 5 years....cmon Nintendo, I'd even have taken a third hero of time on 3ds but no...nothing.....Links awakening which is no where near as good as link between worlds in my opinion and Skyward Sword which is almost broken.
@ThomasBW84 Figured it would be a 2023 release from the start, but was assured after the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet announcement. While I'm not happy about the delay, it's fine, considering BotW is my least favorite 3D Zelda game. And yes, I think we can lock BotW 2 in for a March release.
I mean, POKEMON S&V was a sign for me. Why have 2 big games clash Q4? Great decision. Plus Switch is still being bought left n right.
Going into 2022, I assumed it was going to get delayed but still thought it was pretty 50/50. Once Xenoblade 3 and Pokémon Scarlet/Violet got announced, I was going to more surprised if it didn’t get pushed into 2023. Three huge open-world fantasy adventure titles competing with each other during the holiday season didn’t seem too likely.
I’m guessing they’ll release BOTW2 along with new hardware. That way the developers have more time to polish the game and add content, consumers can have the game looking its best on refreshed hardware, and Nintendo gets to have a big game launch to promote and sell a new Switch model. Just a guess, of course… if we keep throwing darts at the board then the Switch Pro will come out eventually, right? 😂
Bummed out for sure, though the Switch lineup this year is already incredibly strong anyways so I'm not too disappointed.
Disappointing, but at least 2022 is pretty jam packed. The 2021 trailer looked rather prototype-y, so it’s not a huge surprise.
I didn't predict it. I expected it. "2022" is a very broad range, what's a few months more? Nintendo gave themselves a lot of wiggle room with their original "release date."
I've always maintained one of two possibilities.
1. We won't see Botw2 until we see a more powerful Switch to play it on.
2. Botw2 was scrapped it was not good enough, They re started work on it a couple of years ago. Announcing another years delay gets them off the hook for the rest off 2022.
It would be good if we all forgot about the game.
But let's have a poll to vote if thats a good idea.
It's been a while now with that smell of "let's delay it and make it a release for both Switch and the next system, it wouldn't be the first time anyway".
Launching to coincide with the Switch Pro. Confirmed.
"A frivolity frantically furnished is folly forthwith." - William Shakespeare.
This is a big blow to Nintendo's 2022, but I think Pokémon Legends Arceus, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Splatoon 3, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, among others, is still a good year for Switch. And, yeah, I was expecting the delay with how silent Nintendo has been about BotW2.
as long as we still get a trailer this year at e3 ill be satiated
I think we’d have seen more of it if it was coming this year, so I’m not too surprised. I also suspect it will end up releasing towards the end of next year, not Spring.
I'm disappointed, but man those 3 extra seconds of footage really softened the blow. I still hope they have a trailer planned for june
I am going to die on the "March 3, 2023" hill. Been saying this date since E3 2021, and I'm 95% confident that it will be by then or very shortly thereafter (really anytime in March is fine considering 3/31 is the end of the Nintendo fiscal year). I'd be shocked if it is released anytime after
@UmbreonsPapa well if its not BOTW 2 what could Nintendos holiday game next year be? Not pokemon will likely be DLC next year, Prime 4 won't be ready for next year or a 3D Mario so Zelda is likely all they have to be that big 10 plus million seller holiday game
Not terribly surprised it's been pushed back. If anything a part of me was sort of hoping for it with the wish of getting Wind Waker and Twilight Princess ported as a holdover, I'd kind of rather have those anyway.
I have to say, it really hurted, that it's going to get delayed. But after hearing what Aonuma-San said, and the new footage, I was reassured this game will be amazing and it'll be worth the wait. It's funny seeing people assuming a "new console" will be released hahahaha. This game will be an assurance of the Switch's longevity.
@nessisonett That gave me chuckle lad. I'd already started to roll my eyes after the first part too.
No surprise here. It's a mainline Zelda. What did you all think was going to happen? Best to make it great than make it fast. Meanwhile I can play the first game again. I can wait.
A year away ( at least ) so I’m guessing it still needs lots of work but the amount of games available means there’s never a shortage of stuff to play so I’ll happily wait.
I was cautiously optimistic but thought it was likely it'd be delayed. It's a little disappointing, but considering they had been aiming for holiday 2022, if it launches in spring that's really just a few months off. That said I kinda wish they'd stop announcing games so prematurely.
Pokémon will be the main star this winter then, and by start I mean cash haha.
Sadly, the Pokémon announcements kinda sealed zeldas fate for me. And all I was told was they had no correlation to each other.
Also unless something changes 3 out of 6 years of switch have had Pokémon as the holiday game.
I applaud their communication, but now Zelda fans will be expecting basically a full experience as though it is a new game instead of just rehashed improvements
@Friendly I don’t think a new consoles coming out until AFTER Mario Kart 8 Deluxe receives its final wave of DLC at the end of 2023. I just don’t see Nintendo overlapping generational releases like that.
More than happy to wait, I have half finished games sitting there I’ve been ignoring and other things to tide me over so it’s no biggie. With the sky (and I assume underground) thrown in this looks like being a much bigger game than BOTW.
do we really need 4 separate articles on a delay announcement? good lord
@TKundNobody I echo these thoughts.
Some more Zelda ports, remasters or remakes would do well to tide some of us over in the meantime in-between time. I’m personally more interested in the Zelda Oracle games being remade like Link’s Awakening was (since I’ve never played them) or even just Nintie adding a Game Boy line NSO App with those original games and other classics added to the service (in colour of course).
… Wun can only hope.
Metroid Prime Trilogy HD for this Christmas then hopefully.
I was expecting 2022, and yes, I'm a little disappointed. Hoping we get some remasters though to hold us over.
Was looking forward to two games this year, Advance Wars Reboot Camp and BOTW 2. To say I'm disappointed in Nintendo is an understatement. Possible Modern Warfare Remastered coming to Switch but AW delayed, it's ridiculous!
I'm absolutely not disappointed. I didn't finish the first one so far, since I didn't like some of its concepts.
BotW 2 has to prove that is does better.
It would have been more of a surprise for Nintendo to release it without a delay.
I just want wind waker on switch
A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.
Disappointed but if Silksong releases this year my disappointment will vanish completely.
no problems, we have bayonetta, xenoblade and pokemon this year
I already thought this game could be delayed depending on how ambitious it was. Besides, a lot of similarly promising games from other Nintendo IPs are coming this year, so it's not as baffling as 2015 or 2016.
Something similar happened with BoTW during those years. But the circustmances are quite different. BoTW was delayed from 2015 to polish the overall quality (like the physics engine) and likely add more content (to boot, the delay left a notorious impact at Nintendo's overall 2015 performance), while it was delayed from 2016 for one single reason: To launch alongside the Switch.
The trailer also showed better lighting effects, I can't wait to see more of this game!
What I'm REALLY hoping though, is they don't make this game skip E3. That was one of the biggest mistakes Nintendo could've made at E3 2015
Meanwhile, something to reminisce; https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/03/talking_point_the_legend_of_zelda_on_wii_u_may_benefit_from_a_delay_but_it_leaves_a_blockbuster-sized_gap
I'm disappointed. If it really benefits the game it's fine, but my feeling say's that it is delayed because they are also working on a version for the next console. Wouldn't be the first time they did this with Zelda.
I've been saying this for a year now and no one wanted to hear me.
Nintendo has Pokemon in fall, as well as Xenoblade 3. There was never a need for Zelda to fall into their financial quarter in that time period. So it makes sense to give it more time
Does not bother me. I expected it to be sometime in 2023 at the soonest. Though I was expecting it closer to the winter holidays, so Nintendo could rack up that Christmas dough. In the meantime, I have plenty to play and much to look forward to coming out this year.
@nessisonett huh?
I'm good. I'll be neck deep in Pokémon
I do feel that the release window of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet may have pushed for this to happen also. The Christmas/Holiday window was far too cluttered and could have stolen the thunder from certain titles. This way it gets some room to build its own marketing hype.
A little more breathing room between Breath of the Wild 2 and Xenoblade 3 probably isn't a bad thing!
Good things take time. Disappointed, sure, but I want something solid when it comes out.
It was pretty obvious this was happening after Pokemon Scarlett/Violet were announced. No way they were gonna have 3 huge open world titles release in quick succession like that.
@KBuckley27 What makes you so sure Prime 4 won't be ready next year? Fall 2023 would be roughly 5 years after the game had restarted development (late 2018).
2022
New Generation Pokemon
New 3D Mario - revealed at E3
2023
Breath of the Wild 2
Metroid Prime 4
This is actually a welcome relief. I will probably still be playing Elden Ring come the Holiday season, plus Hogwarts Legacy is looking great and feels like a great holiday game.
I wonder if anything Nintendo has seen in Elden Ring has given them pause and something they want to iterate on in BOTW2?
Point of information:
35% is NOT "just under half." it's just over a third.
in an american residential race, 35% would be a landslide defeat.
as far as zelda goes, i can wait as long as it takes, just make it good ok? 👍
@IceClimbers Nintendo purchased Retro in May 2002, in almost 20 years with Nintendo Retro Studios have released only 4 games, they clearly have struggled to make games, Prime 4 restarted development in early 2019 then a year later Covid and game development put on halt for awhile which delays game development and work from home delays progress even further and finally people leaving during the making the game thus needing those positions filled and replaced
Every single time they do this. I've been a Nintendo loyalist since the NES and have never bought another console, so these games are important to the likes of me. But they must have the worse project managers imaginable. If a game is going to take a certain length of time, that's fine. But to delay a delayed game again, is taking customers for granted. And I don't buy the 'At least it'll be good when it's ready' argument. They're taking longer on a game using the same engine as they are with the original. Really poor management and respect for customers.
@MichaelP Spring just started about a week ago.
They always delay the Zelda games. This was to be expected. Xenoblade 3 comes out in September and we get another Pokémon game in November, another Pokémon game. Joy. What’s gonna be the holiday game?
Good, maybe they can take the time to actually make the world interesting and not just a bland empty area for the sake of saying the game is "open world". It just doesn't mean much when there's not much to do besides hunt seeds to get rewarded with literal crap.
Not too long ago, I adamantly asserted my prediction of this game releasing on November 18, 2022. Now I'm gonna have to look towards a new date.
What a bummer. This is why I hate when they announce games that are not even close to ready for release.
Of course Nintendo is delaying BotW 2, it needs to launch with Switch 2. I bet it's in March like the original Switch launch date of 3rd March 2017.
It's too big a game not to be a launch title.
Dang. But it was too good to be true to have BOTW2 and the next generation of Pokemon so close together. The year is still looking way better than anything Switch year before.
They need that extra few months to finally come up with a name.
Now I'm left wondering what their E3 game will be!
I don't like Aonuma's new haircut. Thought he looked somewhat charismatic. Now he appears more boring.
Anyway, nothing, but respect for this man. Expected BOTW2 to crown what is already a killer year for gaming. But if get's even more awesome due to the delay, I'm fine.
With my growing backlog of games, I think I'll be OK 'til then.
Here's the thing Nintendo is lining this and the "end" of the Mario Kart DLC up for 2023 because this is when it will finally talk about / release the much debated successor to the current switch. With nearly 100 million systems out there right now, I think it is safe to say that the next gen switch will be backwards compatible. They are pulling the same crap that they did with the original BoTW were it landed on switch and Wii U. Just my opinion. 2023 is going to be a huge year for the big N.
Not a surprise at all and I did call it in that previous post. Since I knew it all along, there's no disappointment to be had.
"Re: Poll: So, Do You Think Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 Will Actually Release In 2022?
BeefSanta
40BeefSantaFri 7th Jan 2022
It will 100% not be this year. Maybe not even 2023."
Shouldn't have announced it so early, though ...That just leaves people disappointed.
What an amazing Zelda anniversary year
I'll actually probably enjoy it more now, I have so many other games to play this year.
I just... was so sure it wouldn't be delayed. I honestly can't imagine why it's taking so long. Again, I don't mind, I just can't figure it out. It's a sequel, it's using the same assets and world map as the first game, and yet it's taking longer than the first game?
Is it just because they're hoping to improve on the on the first game, and it's taking longer to fine-tune it all and find the right balance? Maybe they've just had to scrap and redesign it several times because they're having a hard time making it feel fresh and new while using the old map? I know it was said in some interview that Aonuma had to convince higher-ups to go with a bigger budget, and he was granted it on the condition that he reuse a lot of it for several games going forward. Maybe the pressure of those demands is hindering their creative decisions and they've had to spend a lot of time on trial and error to figure out what to do. Maybe they're just simply stressed because they have to live up to one of the most influential games of the past ten years.
Or perhaps the most likely scenario: I have no idea how game development works and its something that was obvious to everybody else.
Just reading the first handful of comments brings up an issue I take with the delay. No new hardware should be involved to have the best experience with this game. But since the community spoke a delay into existence, I wouldn't be shocked by something crappy like that occurring to begin next year. Also, can we start calling the Zelda team lazy or stop calling efforts in Pokemon and Mario Kart lazy? Before this game releases, Game Freak will have Let's Go, Sword/Shield, Arceus and Scarlet/Violet out on the Switch. The team working on the Booster Course Pass will have 24 tracks brought over to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, more than enough to be a Mario Kart game in itself. There should be more credit given to those actually putting content on the Switch.
I don't believe a Zelda game since Ocarina of Time didn't suffer a delay of some sort so this is not really unexpected. We'll just have to enjoy the other games we get this year and occasionally play BotW in anticipation.
That sucks but not totally unsurprising.
It's fine though, as there are other games coming out that I want to play, as well as a bunch on my wish list that I plan on getting as well.
Very disappointed. Zelda is a “winter” type of game. One for the holidays. And man they are taking longer and longer… 6 years between new titles. Uff. When Nintendo still had a handheld line they managed to release way more Zelda games somehow.
To top it off, I’m not even in the camp that particularly likes the direction Zelda has taken with BOTW. Crafting, open world, repetitive shrines, little story, no characters, no towns, no sequences or set pieces, no music, no surprises. But it’s the series’ bestseller, so that’s where they will keep going.
So overall I’m not feeling great about the future of the series right now. Which sucks cause they’ve been my favorite video games since the 80s.
Wonder what their big holiday game is going to be now. It’s not Prime, that’s for sure.
In the January poll comments I said BOTW2 would slip to Mar 2023, and I may be right for once!
Absolutely fine with the delay, because backlog.
Never surprised, especially when Nintendo used a word like "aiming" for late 2022. There's also the fact recent Zelda games have been launch titles on the next system, and with it so deep into the Switch cycle, it made sense all along to peg BOTW2 to the Switch successor. No doubt all the other big titles like Odyssey 2, Metroid Prime 4 and Mario Kart 9 will be saved for the Switch 2. Personally, given that the MK8D DLC won't be completely released until late 2023, I'm thinking early 2024 is the new Switch and therefore BOTW2, and this reality will also be Nintendo's excuse for the further delay. Of course, Nintendo could expedite the release schedule for the MK DLC to late 2022 so it's finished much earlier and they hold their latest aim of spring 2023 for BOTW2 and Switch 2. Late 2023 to finish the MK DLC actually seems an incredibly long time. I'm already done with the 8 new tracks.
It won't be release on Spring 2023, Holiday 2023 is more likely.
I pre-ordered Metroid Prime 4 and Bayonneta 3 4 years ago. This is nothing. Quality-control-palooza!
I really doubt the delay is so it can launch it alongside new hardware - the components aren't there to produce new hardware, and the expected 6-7 year life-cycle for the Switch will be extended. I mean, its on this very website: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/02/nintendo-president-reiterates-that-switch-is-just-in-the-middle-of-its-lifecycle
The relatively short delay is to have a stable, bug-free launch so that we can all play comfortably with stability.
To ease any sting that some people may feel, we don't know all of Nintendo's 2022 games yet: we'll know more after June's Direct and after the first Indie World Direct in the coming weeks.
2022 is stacked enough, bought my first full price game in years with kirby and looking forward to bayonetta, still plenty of great looking indies i haven't gotten around to yet either.
I was leaning more toward it being delayed after seeing Pokemon Violet/Scarlet. Its hard to see both games coinciding for the holiday. Not to say that's all it was but just a thought. I'm sure they're going to work more on it anyway. Between Xenoblade 3 and Pokemon, Zelda then might be too much.
I do wonder what this means for next 2d top down Zelda project and its window. If it makes it before the end of the Switch lifespan. Will it be saved for the next console?
I'm disappointed, but not at all surprised. I'll live, got plenty to do, so it's not that big of a deal.
I thought it was pretty obvious that it would get delayed into 2023. We hardly seen anything from it and no gameplay yet. They did mention before that they were aiming for 2022. When a game is being said that it's aiming for a certain time, expect a delay. So many games have been getting a delay. I'm happy with the Spring 2023 because that is a quieter time to game so I wouldn't have to worry about thinking about other games i want to play which is a distraction
Non of the Polls are for what I wanted to vote after seeing title. I wanted to vote that after Pokémon Direct announcing Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and at that time it was over a year without a new trailer for it, so I felt that there will be delay.
I knew it was going to slip into 2023. Hey, at least we've got remastered Mario Kart DLC to keep us occupied until then. Granted if it again slips out of that Spring window into Summer, but that seems unlikely
Always have been saying it will get delayed until 2023. Still think they are going to fill the gap with TP and WW HD, and also still think the reason they didn't release those with the Anniversary is because they saw this delay coming.
It could have gone either way, but after Scarlet/Violet were announced for this year, I would have been surprised if it DIDN'T get delayed.
Nintendo in general - but especially Zelda - is infamous for its delays. No, I do not think it will release in March. We'll be watching Mr. Aonuma bow his head once more, ever so sorrowfully, to announce that it will be releasing Holiday 2023.
I mean, come on. We're supposed to buy this load of crap that it's actually going to hit its target date? It's not back to the drawing board like Metroid Prime 4, but it sure as hell isn't good news. I absolutely want a quality Zelda game, but 2023 is seeming less and less likely.
My prediction? Holiday 2023 or maybe even Spring 2024. Just don't be shocked if it's the latter: we all knew this was a Catch-22 going in.
