Re: Feature: How Do Game Developers And Artists Feel About The Rise Of AI Art?

NintendoJunkie

As a lifetime artist and art director in the games industry, it bums me out a little TBH but I think it is an inevitable future. It will get better and more impressive. There will be great benefits that will come from this though. Old media amd photos could be restored for example. I hope it will be more like a calculator, another tool of democratization. All at the same time, it is very similar to digital art, we use Photoshop and now Procreate to get around more traditional approaches. The principles will remain the same. I felt a similar way when Pixar came out with Toy Story 1. It was a step away from more traditional hand drawn animation. On the other side now, I think the world is more robust in its expression of the human experience, not less for the switch to computer animation. I imagine there could come a day where someone that draws with a pencil and paper would be viewed in the same way as a wood working violin maker.

Re: Best Contra Games On Nintendo Systems

@NeonPizza I am admittedly not a Contra fan but your game list of favorite games overlaps a lot with my favorites. Makes me want to rethink Blazing Chrome. I might go purchase that. Thanks for the recommendation (from a silent observer of the chat stream.)

The only ones on your list I didn't get into as much were Ninja Saviors and Cuphead but the rest were some of my all time favorites.

Re: Three New Pokémon Introduced In Latest Scarlet & Violet Trailer

@BriskSunrise From the other comments, it seems like my sentiment is shared. I think they are cool designs, just different, not bad.

Historically, bipedal pokemon have had some anthropomorphic component to their look. Some one said it earlier, these feel a little more like Megaman designs. That matches with my first impression as well.

Re: Best Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Games On Nintendo Systems

@tdub154420 I wholehearted agree. I played Turtles in Time in the arcades back in the day, as well as recently. It was novel for it's time but is relatively shallow as far as beat em ups go. Shredders revenge is a phenomenal upgrade in every aspect. Although I'm not sure SR has the best mechanics of any beat em up ever made, but it is really sweet.

Re: River City Girls 2 Release Window Shifts To "Sometime After" Summer 2022

NintendoJunkie

@JeanPaul it depends on what camp of beat em ups you like. If you like the RPG feel of River City Ransom/Castle Crashers/Scott Pilgrim, then this a great fit. Very progression based, as a result enemies are a little more damage spongey and the gameplay feels a little backend weighted. If you are more of the side of Shredders Revenge, SOR, or Fight N' Rage where most of the moveset is there from go, and it feels more arcadey; this game is not those.

Re: Watch: This 90-Minute Deep Dive Into Two Of The Most Underrated Zeldas Is Well Worth The Time

NintendoJunkie

There is a shocking amount of variety between the Zeldas. Its fun that they all elicit unique responses and opinions from Zelda's fanbase. I really enjoyed PH because of the controls. Not too many action adventure games that work that well with almost completely being touch controls. Additionally, I found that I could do a couple crazy things that could only be done in PH. There were moments when I felt like a telekinetic demigod.

Re: Soapbox: 20 Years Later, Super Mario Sunshine Is Still The Best 3D Mario

NintendoJunkie

It's funny so many comments are arguing someone's preferences as if there is empirical objective truth to liking something. It's kind of like arguing that there is a best flavor of ice cream. But I guess the proof is in the pudding; this article has over a hundred opinionated comments and counting.

For the record, I really connected with Galaxy 1. Not sure why, I just did. Odyssey I played all the way, it was brilliant from design standpoint, it just felt "lonely" to me for some reason. Never connected with 64, I tried so many times. Sunshine was fine, I just didn't enjoy the feeling of being a janitor...

Re: New N64 Emulator Plugin Adds Ray Tracing, Widescreen, 60FPS (And More) To Classics Like Zelda & Paper Mario

This is eye opening. I always thought that generation was kind of ugly. I wasn't sure devs would lean into it as much on the indie side. I always understood the charm in pixel art and could appreciate what pixel art has been doing in the indie scene for the last ten years or so. Now that I see this, I could definitely see a resurgence of low poly throwbacks that could be stunning. We are just a few years away from games like this supporting real-time global illumination as the average. Pretty exciting.

Re: Legend Of Zelda Fans Accuse Indie Game Of "Ripping-Off" Link's Awakening

NintendoJunkie

Hmmm.... I think the Links Awakening remake was a revelation from an art direction standpoint. This team is clearly talented from a rendering standpoint, too bad they couldn't come up with a different graphical style. If they hadn't outright ripped the style, and managed to be first to market in a different time continuum, they would have been lauded as an indie darling. Now they just seem weak, inexperienced, and unimaginative.
