"What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets."
These words, uttered by Dracula Vlad Țepeș during the opening exchange with Richter Belmont in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, have become completely synonymous with the Castlevania franchise. Referenced and parodied by multiple other games in the 25 years since — perhaps most recently by Drinkbox Studio's Guacamelee! 2 — it's a phrase that has been mocked and revered in equal measure. However, despite how iconic such a simple phrase has become, it pales in comparison to the impact and legacy that Symphony of the Night itself has left on gaming.
Hot take time: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is the greatest 'Metroidvania' ever created. Yes, that includes the likes of Hollow Knight, Metroid Dread, and Dead Cells. It's even leagues ahead of Super Metroid — sorry, but that's the truth. [Hmm, we'll discuss this on Monday - Ed.]
Released in 1997 for the PlayStation and directed by Toru Hagihara, it serves as a direct sequel to Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (though you might not have known this at the time, since Rondo of Blood was a Japanese exclusive for a good 15 years or so), opening where Rondo of Blood ended with Richter Belmont's final confrontation with Dracula. Reviews at the time called it "spectacular" (Next Generation Magazine) and "easily one of the best games ever released" (GameSpot).

We've seen so many homages in recent years, yet Symphony of the Night stands head and shoulders above them all.
Shortly after the introductory sequence with Richter, you're thrust into the shoes of the game's primary protagonist, Alucard, and it's here that Symphony of the Night sets itself apart from previous Castlevania entries in dramatic style, casting aside linear levels for a sprawling, interconnected castle complete with numerous sections and countless secrets. Although we've seen a plethora of outstanding Metroidvania games since its release, Symphony of the Night still stands as the most sublime example of the genre; a perfect blend of exploration and combat that has yet to be bested, even by its own successors.
Looking at Symphony of the Night today, you'd be forgiven for thinking it to be an authentic, yet altogether more modern take on a 'retro' 2D platformer. We've seen so many homages in recent years — both good and bad — yet at 25 years of age, Symphony of the Night stands head and shoulders above them all. The beautifully detailed environments; the deadly, yet mesmerising enemies and boss characters; the way Alucard's movement briefly leaves behind a trail of energy. It all comes together to produce one of the most stunning video games of all time, a textbook example of the continued validity of 2D gaming in an age of photorealist 3D sandboxes.

Dracula's castle itself remains a marvel of game design and is the key to Symphony of the Night's status as a true pioneer of the genre. It's a beautifully intricate maze that astounds at every corner. But it's when you get to the middle portion of the game that you truly begin to appreciate its ingenuity; just when you think you've beaten the game, Symphony of the Night pulls one of the greatest tricks in video game history by literally flipping the castle on its head.
As you navigate the 'inverted castle', the sheer amount of effort required for its creation begins to hit home; not only did it need to work as a fully explorable environment with interconnected segments, but every room, every corridor, and every spire had to also work upside down. It's an unbelievable feat in game design.

So, what gives, Konami? When are you going to port such a masterpiece onto the Switch?
As it stands, Symphony of the Night is playable on both the PlayStation 4/5 and the Xbox One/S/X via Castlevania Requiem and the Xbox Live Arcade release respectively. You can also play it on the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita via the 'PSOne Classic' re-release and even on Android and iOS thanks to a recent port of the Dracula X Chronicles version. Just be aware that some versions of the game contain reworked dialogue and voice acting, which is arguably inferior to the original.
So, if you want to play Symphony of the Night (and just in case it's not clear, we really recommend you do), there are plenty of options available to you already. But we'd argue that — like many, many games — it would perhaps be best suited to Switch. 2D pixel art looks great on Switch (especially if you've got that beautiful OLED screen) and, coupled with the console's namesake ability to switch between TV and Handheld modes, we reckon Symphony of the Night would find considerable success on Nintendo's platform with new audiences. At 25 years old, there's an entire generation of gamers who will have missed out on this classic, and there's no more convenient system to play it on.
Konami isn't exactly unfamiliar with the console, either: it's already released two extensive Castlevania collections in the past few years with Castlevania Anniversary Collection and Castlevania Advance Collection, the latter of which would not even exist were it not for the success of Symphony of the Night. Indeed, other than the glaring omission of the wonderful DS Castlevania games Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia (we'd like those too, please!), you could argue that Symphony of the Night is the last missing piece in Konami's 2D Castlevania era. It's also, without question, the most influential game in the entire franchise, and one of the most important games released in the last 30 years.
So if anyone at Konami is reading this... You know what to do.

Yeah, I played it on the PS3 through the PS Classics gatalogue, it's a really good and insanely detailed game.
I'd be up to it for it being available to more people, though if it doesn't have the cheesy OG voice acting then I personally don't care.
E: I'd love a version with all the Saturn version bonus areas and the Maria mode from that version.
I have it on PS1 and PS4, and have played it a million times, but would absolutely get it again if it came to Switch. It's just that good.

I believe Konami is purposely skipping Nintendo systems with this game.
With Saturn classics like Radiant Silvergun, Grandia, and Suikoden already on Switch it would be great to bring this legendary Sega Saturn masterpiece to Switch too. While Sega won't give us Astal, Virtual On, Virtua Fighter 2, Burning Rangers, and Dragon Force any time soon. More third party hits from the Sega Saturn library like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a welcome addition. Bring it Konami.
I still own my PlayStation, but I’d love to play it on switch. Can’t be so hard to port it, they did ports of the old games and they release SotN for 3 bucks on iOS. Switch needs this game. Would be perfect to have SotN and Super Metroid on one console.
I think there's something funky with the PSP / Requiem version that means it has to be PlayStation exclusive. Since there is a new voice cast and new script, it's possible some elements of this version may be tied to Sony somehow. Though it may be as simple as that Requiem is running on a Sony-specific PSP emulator or something.
Since the Xbox version of SotN is NOT the Requiem version, but rather the original (though missing the FMV cutscenes) I think it would actually be more likely to get the original / non-Requiem version if this game were to come to Nintendo.
And I'd prefer that honestly - the original script is legendary.

I've played this game so many times. It needs a true sequel.
Given the PS exclusivity for the Requiem collection but Microsoft still able to have the 360 port available on XB1/Series X|S via backwards compatibility, it feels like the most likely outcome that would result in SotN coming to Switch would be if Saturn got added to NSO Expansion Pack (or a more expensive NSO tier). Mega Drive on NSO Expansion Pack got Castlevania Bloodlines.
Of course that has its own difficulties as SEGA only seems to care about Mega Drive out of their retro consoles.

Honestly I would love to see the Symphony/Rondo combo on Switch. But honestly I've played so many times on so many systems, I feel like Konami is jerkng us around. It's kind of at a point where I wish they would make a DS collection, if they could figure out how they would work mechanically. Or, they should make a sequel.

I appreciate the game, but hate how this one entry made Alucard the major fan favorite of the series.
He's interesting, but there are so many cool characters in the Castlevania universe, and if his movement and style hadn't been retconned in this game from Castlevania 3, he may have continued to be one of many cool characters.
Instead, now he's basically the only character most of my friends ever talk about when conversing about Castlevania. . .rolls eyes

I must point out that traversal is an integral and oft-unappreciated aspect of this genre, and in that respect, Super Metroid is unarguably superior. Even with Dracula's filthy sorcerous chicanery, his ability to simply ignore the laws of physics, and Alucard's powers, Samus' moveset is clearly the more engaging, creative and rewarding. Being a woman of courage and resourcefulness rather than undead royalty, Samus is forced to work with those laws, producing beauty in movement that would have made Newton and Galileo weep. How does SOTN match Samus' tension-filled ascents and descents into the abyss, or indeed Metroid's use of the vertical? Dracula is a spectre of the medieval past, but Samus' adventures take entire worlds for their playgrounds. If she is more élite than Alucard, it's because she earned it, she wasn't just born with it.

I'm a huge Castlevania fan... And I've still never played this. I can get it for Playstation, but there's something about experiencing these on the Switch that just strikes me as being so much more appealing. Crazy to me that it isn't available

I'm gradually working through it on my Vita and fine with that, but a Switch version of Dracula X Chronicles could be a very probable double-dip and restart as long as I'm not TOO far into the handheld playthrough... and preferably if the port does away with the complicated unlock method via Rondo of Blood (that was an interesting feature objectively, but not something I would look forward to undergoing again).😄 What I've played so far hasn't exactly showed me anything decidedly superior to more modern metroidvanias - the latter had up to 25 years to learn from and build up on it, after all, including my personal IGA faves like Dawn of Sorrow or Bloodstained; but indeed, we wouldn't have any of those without SotN cementing the formula. And as someone who can never have too many metroidvanias in his backlog, I salute it.
I'd prefer Konami to release the N64 Castlevania, way better game. Symphony of the Night is a bit overrated, in my opinion.
There's tons of Konami games that need a re-release on all modern platforms. Just looking on non-licensed (?) NES games, they could release Metal Gear, Life Force: Salamander, Blades of Steel, Jackal, Crisis Force, Double Dribble, Stinger, Gradius II, Cyber Stadium Series: Base Wars, and Track & Field in Barcelona.
Honestly it's been released so many times on so many different platforms does it have to be re-released again? I am sure anyone who's wanted to play this game has done so by now.

It's also a bit of a bummer it wasn't included in the collection with the GBA Castlevania games, since it would have been a great opportunity to bundle in another S tier entry.
@russell-marlow If you have a Series X, there are also physical copies of SotN for Xbox 360. It comes in a two pack with Super Contra.
SotN is a fascinating and beautiful game. It's also kind of boring to play. Later Iganavias are much more fun, to say nothing of Metroid.

The fact that it is on mobile devices and that it is not a “tablet” called the Switch is an insult.

Castlevania Requiem is not available in Xbox, nor it will be available anywhere else. It was funded by Sony and it uses an in house created PSP emulator. In any case it is strange that there is no Switch (or PC official) version.
The XBLA version is bugged for me. I have beaten the game multiple times and no achievement was ever unlocked.

I'd love to try this game at some point based on its renown alone. I've dabbled a little with the Castlevania franchise before (Super Castlevania IV, Mirror of Fate demo on 3DS) and have enjoyed what I played.
I originally played the Xbox 360 port of it, but re-experienced it years later via the Dracula X Chronicles on PSP, and will soon replay it via the PS4 collection with Rondo. So I have plenty of experience with it.
All the same, I've always preferred my Classicvanias, which tend to feature far less repetitive level design and don't muddy their gameplay with a leveling system.
It's a good game, but, IMO, it's not a masterpiece like Rondo of Blood was. I also preferred the Classic/Modern fusion of Order of Ecclesia, which I desperately wish would be ported to Switch.

I remember hearing all the good things about this game when it came out in 1997. I had the Saturn then. I intended to get the Japanese Saturn import and never got around to it. I got a used PS1 in late 1998 and...never got around to it. I have to admit my enthusiasm for the Castlevania franchise was low in those days. A few years later, I did play and enjoy the Castlevanias for the GBA. I didn't play the DS games for a while. I didn't get a PSP until late in that machine's run. I picked up the Castlevania for that specifically for the locked PC Engine version of Rondo(I wasn't fond of the 3D remake). The included Symphony of the Night was a nice bonus and I finally got around to playing it. Did it live up to all the hype? Honestly, yes it did. It's a fantastic game all around as far as I'm concerned, and of of the best Metroidvania games I've played. I do prefer the PSP version's script and voice acting over the PS1, though I'd probably rather have the Japanese audio with accurately-translated text. I'm not into the cheesy acting of the original.
I think the mobile port is really decent and plays great on my 6.8 oled screen with Razer Kishi. Even if it is not the preferred version.
@anoyonmus They've been on a run with their collections in recent years. The Castlevania/Contra/Arcade trio, Castlevania GBA, hell we got that TMNT Collection they could have easily not bothered with what with the license and all, but they did it. And now a Suikoden HD Remaster.
I think a lot is possible with their backcatalogue.
With the consistency with which Konami has been releasing those Castlevania collections, we may see SotN coming eventually, maybe included in a likely DS collection (I mean, the Advance collection also had Dracula X, a SNES game). That said, the Sony-funded updated version (the one with a redone dub and script) may be less likely.
It was weird that they have released 2 collections in recent years and totally skipped SOTN. I wish they included it in the gba collection.

If it's the Requiem version, they can keep it. I was excited to replay on the PS4, but it has a fair number of bugs, suffers in the controls from being a psp port, and most egregious the music is way too low and can't be adjusted so you either have to have one of the best soundtracks ever locked at a low volume or have your ears stabbed with too loud sfx.
I'd actually rather see the Virtual console version of Rondo brought over to the Switch. Hot take: it's better than SotN and the perfect bridge between old and new Castlevania.

I've never understood why Konami, which has a history of good relations with Nintendo seems to never want one of their biggest Castlevania games (A franchise which ALSO has a good history with Nintendo!) to come to a Nintendo system.

The castlevania series is a bit of a gap in my gaming life (minus the awesome Netflix show). But like many I’ve played countless games inspired by them so ye I’d like this on the switch 👍
Bloodstained Ritual of the Night was the spiritual successor to this game and it did insanely well on switch.
I loved this game so much that I bought a copy of it on eBay when I moved out of the apartment of my friend who owned his original PlayStation copy of it. That got stolen for me several years ago in my apartment in Raleigh, and I would really really love to have it on my switch. It would be like restoring a piece of my former self to me. It's such a good game people, though everyone commenting here obviously already knows that in their bones.

I’d love to get into the Castlevania series, but the lack of games on Switch doesn’t motivate me to. This getting ported would get me to get it though. I’m mostly hoping the original will be added to NSO so I can play it for free, but I doubt that’ll happen.
It's kinda funny that we actually WANT to pay for a re-release on Modern Hardware. But in the meantime we have to emulate or play on old hardware. I really don't wanna hear a single complaint from Konami or the Big N when I have no other option.

Sorry there but SOTN is not superior to Super Metroid. Super Metroid is always talked about as the best Metroidvania and one of the best games of all time. I've never heard SOTN brought up with that. I still don't even understand why its called Metroidvania. Metroid started it and Castlevania took from it. Should just be called Metroidlike.

But ****block king Sony did what they do best- swooped in and paid Konami to keep it off Switch to capitalize off Simon and Richter in Smash. Literally ever other Castlevania game is multiplat. There is no reason Konami would intentionally skip other platforms, especially with the Switch versions of the collections outselling other versions. Unfortunately they're as petty as they come. Any opportunity to screw other players to devalue their platform, they're on it like a shark on blood.
@Serpenterror The Saturn version wasn't recieved all that well. It gave some bonus content, but had huge slow down issues because they basically tried to port the PS code directly over and the 2 systems excelled and sucked at very different things (it uses a surprising amount of polygons and 3d effects considering it looks like a mostly sprite based game; so the Saturn struggled as the initial coding was built around working around the Playstations 2D short comings).
@JaxonH The DS ones aren't multiplatform nor are the various mobile games, or that 3D fighter. Rondo of Blood (excluding the inferior SNES Dracula X game) is pretty much only available on the Turbo Graphics CD, PSP and some of Sony's store fronts (pretty much the same ones Symphony is on)).
But it would be nice to get Symphony on the Switch (package it with Rondo and call it the Blood Collection or some such).
Or you could just play the phone port?

@Kiwi_Unlimited Because Alucard is absolutely one of the best characters in the entire series: the internal dilemma with his familial ties and the love of his human mother; along with owning some useful vampire powers makes him so versatile to play and be. His incredible animation sees him gliding about like a gazelle while reigning all hell on his enemies. He fits with the aesthetic/audio of the SotN castle so well too.
That’s why SotN is so legendary; all the separate parts work together. And it all centers on Alucard. It is my third favorite videogame ever.
That’s not to take anything away from the Belmonts but they just would not make as much sense as the lead in SotN.
The best chance of seeing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is if Konami chooses to port the Dracula X Chronicles from the PSP to the Switch.

Honestly, it's probably not a hot take given it is considered the first "Metroidvania" game (Any of the previous Metroid and Castlevania games were retroactively classified as "Metroidvania").
I think it's obvious when I say that this game needs to be ported to every modern system until the world meets it's heat-death from the sun.

Honestly would've preferred SotN to Dracula x in the Advanced Collection and not just because Dracula X is a horrible game but also it would've rounded out the gba trilogy out more nicely considering it's a metroidvania like the other titles and would've fit in better imo.

I was upset when I saw the "remaster" combo on Playstation and it was exclusive. This and Rondo of Blood would be perfect for Switch.
Not really interested. Emulation works very well nowadays with more graphical options and filters than official ports will ever offer and quality of life additions like save states and fast forward are a must. I'd rather see new content on the switch.
That said SOTN is my favourite game in the series so if the switch is your only option, I'll support the motion.

Except that Alucard was slow and large in Castlevania 3. He was retconned into said gazelle.
Grant Danasty, in the same game, was an acrobat turned into a monster, and effectively aided the Belmonts without powers or a bloodline backing him.
What of Cornell, basically a werewolf who had to learn to control his powers, who gets dragged into the fight against Dracula after his adopted sister is granted as a sacrifice?
Or for that matter, Henry Oldrey, the only gun wielder in the series, who is running around saving sacrificial children while whip wielders and casters take on Dracula directly (Sneider and Fernandez, in this case).
Who can forget Eric Lecarde, the wielder of (your boy) Alucard's spear, a human waging a battle that should be above his pay grade?
What of Sonia, the unfortunately retconned proof that a woman didn't have to be a magical caster to stand up to Dracula, but could go toe to toe with him like her eventual male progeny?
All of these characters were interesting, cool, unique, and sometimes moved like badasses, just like how Alucard was interesting, cool, unique, and sometimes moved like a badass.
However, unlike the others, Alucard got to feature on the best Castlevania game, and was suddenly catapulted to stardom.
I first played it on the PSP, as it's unlockable in the Dracula X Chronicles. It's one of my favourite games, without a doubt.

We absolutely need this game on switch! I’d love them to port the collection over from psp that also had rondo of blood, then we would have both my favorite traditional level based vania, and my favorite open world exploration vania.

SotN is great, but it's nowhere near the best metroidvania out there. Not better than Super Metroid (which has much more engaging navigation throughout), and definitely not better than Hollow Knight (which set a new standard for non-linear exploration).
For all its strengths, SotN struggles most on two fronts. First, the upside-down castle portion is actually really dumb once the novelty wears off. The original castle doesn't translate into anything really interesting to navigate once flipped. Second, most of Alucard's movement abilities are really boring. Bat form is the worst offender, since it invalidates a bunch of level design (and unlimited flying abilities in sidescrollers is pretty much always a mistake). Mist form is also bad, since it's a super linear key-lock ability, with very few applications.
Why not just port the collection from the PSP release?
Out of all the games out there that have been ported to modern consoles; this is the one that I can't understand why it's not on a Nintendo System. Complete wasted opportunity for Konami. They must not love money.

Definitive proof beyond reasonable doubt? No.
But I can present the evidence and reasons for why I believe it if you're curious to know
1) Sony has a long history of buying up exclusives at every turn. Be it Godfall, Kena, Oddworld, Deathloop, KOTOR Remake, Stray, Ghostwire Tokyo, Forspoken, Solar Ash, Little Devil Inside, Final Fantasy VII Remake 1, Final Fantasy VII Remake 2, Final Fantasy XVI, etc.
Heck, Little Devil Inside was a game I personally kickstarted for Nintendo, but Sony swooped in and paid the devs off to make it a timed PS5 exclusive. Now we're hearing they pay devs to not release games on Gamepass, too? Absolutely no line they won't cross.
2) Every other modern re-release of Castlevania games has been multi-plat, and the Switch versions have consistently ranked higher on sales rankings charts, evidence that there is incentive and desire to release these games on Switch. And yet, the one game that was originally a PS release, is conspicuously only released for PS4.
3) The game released right around the time of Belmonts in Smash, which provides motive, capitalizing off the hype
4) The alternate explanation, that Konami just arbitrarily decided to re-release the most desired entry on PS and no other platforms, despite the clear record and trend doing the exact opposite, seems more unlikely than the aforementioned theory in preponderance of the evidence.
The omission of the proper Dracula X, (“Rondo of Blood” as the kids call it these days) from the first collection was a crime against humanity. The inclusion of the dopey SNES version on the second collection was tantamount to finding a spouse cheating on you with a sibling.
We need Rondo of Blood on the Switch too! They throw the vastly inferior Dracula X on the Advance Collection instead of Rondo? I don't get it.
As others have said, Symphony of the Night was and remains fantastic. But even with my nostalgia goggles I can see that Hollow Knight is better. They're both worth playing, of course!
I’m willing to accept that the Castlevania games must be good because so many people love them, but I just don’t get it. I didn’t care for the NES or Super Nintendo games when they were new, and then SotN just felt like an uninspired Super Metroid clone that aped the basics but failed to recapture even a hint of the mysterious atmosphere that made Samus’s adventures so engaging.

I agree with everything you said, and have had a very similar reckon about Sony in general, and SoTN in particular, so I was interested to hear if you had something concrete.

Literally my favorite game of all time, to this day. It really needs to be the extended Saturn version as it added a new small area and some baddies and changed a few pieces of music. Oh and Maria with triple jump was a playable character too. The original voiceovers although corny at times, are far superior to the remade voice work.
Keep the original dialogue, it at least include the option to use it.
I have played sotn many times, on many platforms and I played all three of the original versions, us and jp ps1 versions as well as the Saturn version.

For me that honour goes to those FF 1-6 remasters which were mobile/pc exclusive but i would definitely love to see Sotn and rondo on switch.
You give me a copy of this on catridge and some pretty cover art, and I give you my money, Konami. Deal? Just mind that input lag ok?

Same. Rode my bike and rented it at good old Blockbuster on release weekend and each weekend afterwards until I got my own copy for Christmas in '97.
It was interesting to see the results of the survey; almost half of the respondents (as of when I answered) claimed they played shortly after initial release, which means that there are a lot of late 20s+ readers here.
@chefgon I would agree with you in that SOTN is not mysterious like SM. But I would call for a different perspective.
While there are definitely a lot of Super Metroid inspirations and riffs in SOTN, the two games have different approaches to storytelling and atmosphere. SOTN is more in-your-face with all the cutscenes and the vivid backgrounds, music and enemies, but SM goes the other way with the minimalist presentation and judicious use of music. I would go so far to say that SOTN isn't a mystery story, but an adventure story.
I think SOTN has a lot of staying power among fans today (including myself) because of how well a good chunk of it has aged.
@Glasso It was but they have patched it up pretty well in the current version.
There’s one vital aspect of this game that might be a pain to use on Switch: the castle map, specifically if you’re going for complete traversal percentage. Whether playing on an old 14-inch CRT or a 49-inch TV on PS4, I found it a little hard to spot places I hadn’t been to near the story’s end. I don’t believe it has a zoom mode, so if a Switch version were to happen (LRG’s recent post about having a PSone emulator for Switch and it’s established relationship with Konami offer some hope), I’d like to see that retrofitted.

It's okay to like SOTN more than SM; after all, SOTN is the "-vania" of "metroidvania"
I would absolutely love to get a copy of this to play on switch. I love Konami and have been picking up whatever physical editions I can get, love having these terrific games. We need to get a physical copy of Getsu Fuma den and the 2nd collection. My top five favorite games of all time are SKYRIM, METROID PRIME, ZELDA A LINK TO THE PAST, MVC 2 and CASTLEVANIA SOTN. We have Skyrim and can access Zelda, but we need the others and at number one for me is SOTN. Thanks for the other collections Konami. Love playing them, love having them.

@Pak-Man yeah I don’t get this either, should have been a day one release. KONAMI and NINTENDO have always been like bread and butter.
@Tasuki I’m only still holding onto my Xbox for SOTN and ducktales. I would much prefer to have them on switch. I can play it on the tv or take it with me.. terrific. I also have it on my phone but it’s crap to play, console is way better.

I would just purchase SOTN by itself as a rerelease if I had to. Can’t hurt to throw it on the switch and just get whatever money you get. We all know it’s the castlevania game we are all waiting on. Just announce it will be getting a coming soon release on switch before Christmas as a great present!
I own pretty much every Castlevania game other than the Sega system-released ones. I have been hoping that Konami would have put out a remastered version on PC by now if not for Switch it's sad they haven't. Luckily PSX emulation also runs like butter on the Steam Deck. It's a shame the Switch isn't more open to at least allow PSX emulation if possible.
