HD-2D has become the new lofty bar for retro-inspired RPGs or remakes of our favourite Super Nintendo RPGs. Square Enix's new trademark visual style started with 2018's Octopath Traveler and has also been used in this year's strategy RPG Triangle Strategy. But, arguably, its true potential has been realised in the stunning remake of Live A Live.
With every new HD-2D game, Square Enix has pushed the boat out further. Colour-popping pixels and stunning diorama-esque worlds made us dream of remakes the first time we saw this visual style come to life, but Live A Live proved it was possible — and absolutely worth it. And Square isn't resting on its laurels either, with Dragon Quest III also due to get the HD-2D remake treatment.
Imagine, though, if Square Enix wasn't the only company that could use HD-2D as it is now. Think of the possibilities of seeing your favourite retro games on modern-day hardware looking that beautiful.
We've been getting a bit giddy thinking about what we'd love to see in HD-2D (or similar), and we've narrowed it down to 12 different Nintendo games all of different styles and genres — so not just RPGs, though there are a few of those here — if Square Enix ever let other companies borrow it. Just an idea.
Take a look at our picks, then vote in our poll below and let us know where we're going wrong (or right!).
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
The Legend of Zelda's top-down 2D adventures have already proven perfect remake material, with 2019's Link's Awakening blowing us away in its adorable little plastic toy style. But — hear us out — what about giving those Super Nintendo pixels from A Link to the Past a little polish?
Hyrule's beautiful greens, browns, and blues would come alive in an HD-2D world — imagine what the water would look like. And think about how Nintendo could play with the lighting in the Sacred Realm and Dark World. Seeing the same location in two different ways was already incredible in 1991, but with some juiced-up pixel art emphasising the differences in shades and colours between the parallel worlds? We think there's no better way to show off HD-2D's beautiful lighting and shadows than here.
Mother 3 (GBA)
Okay, now we're being ambitious. Mother 3 has never seen an official western release (hey, just like Live A Live before 2022!), and with endless teases and our constant hopes being dashed, why do we add to the pain of waiting by thinking of a remake?
This is another one where we'd honestly just take a port, and we've also seen fan interpretations of Mother 3 in that cute little clay or toy style. But — as long as the Peanuts-style art is preserved, and the weird and wonderful world is fully realised — we think HD-2D could make what is already an unsettling, emotional, and beautiful story even more incredible. We'd welcome an EarthBound remake too — that goes without saying — but Mother 3's inaccessibility makes this a prime candidate.
Super Metroid (SNES)
Another side-scroller! But Metroid's star is rising once again, and in the wake of the utterly fantastic Metroid Dread, while some people might want a Mercury Steam-style remake of the Super Nintendo classic, we want those creepy, pulsating pixels to be preserved in some way.
Super Metroid is still the queen of atmosphere in both its visuals and music; the depth HD-2D could lend to the maps of Zebes would do wonders to emphasise this further. The bubbling lava and acid could cause Samus and the strange lifeforms of Zebes to cast threatening shadows. Kraid's humongous sprite could tower even more in glorious HD-2D detail. And Samus' array of skills and weaponry could get some very shiny extra effects that would dazzle not just the enemies, but us as well. We'll take a return trip to Zebes any day, but a pixel art remake of Super Metroid would have us on the next available spaceship.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (GBA)
Perhaps one of the oddest ducks on our list, Aria of Sorrow might be the best Castlevania game, and it's already beautiful on a little handheld screen (or a Switch screen, if you will). But who's to say sidescrollers can't also adapt to that HD-2D style?
There are a few ways we think HD-2D can really make an Aria of Sorrow remake pop — those environments and backgrounds could really bring even more depth, light, and shadow to each location that Soma Cruz explores. We could get a few more boss fights like the Balore one, which uses the background and creates a sort of faux-3D effect. And some of those character sprites could get even more expressive. Ayami Kojima's art deserves an even more excellent pixel art style, and frankly, HD-2d would make it shine even brighter.
The Legend of the Mystical Ninja (SNES)
This quirky little adventure game sparked off an entire series for Konami, but the Goemon franchise is one that often gets forgotten about. Not by us, so we're demanding a comeback by dreaming about it in even prettier pixels.
The Legend of the Mystical Ninja might have you walking from left to right most of the time, but the town areas allow you to explore in a sort of 3D plane, with characters coming out of buildings and enemies sneaking up from behind doors. It's already a kaleidoscope of colours on the SNES, too. Plus, we can get a taste of HD-2D platforming, first-person dungeons, and a Gradius-style minigame in a stunning new visual style? If HD-2D wants to make a statement for every single kind of pixel art game, Konami's classic is a good place to start.
Final Fantasy III (SNES)
We're frankly a little bit surprised that Square Enix opted for a 'Pixel Remaster' series for its classic Final Fantasy games when HD-2D is right there. We know that HD-2D isn't cheap, given that it uses Unreal Engine, but the Pixel Remasters aren't on Switch, yet. And Final Fantasy VI, with its changing world and stunning set pieces, would be a true showcase of the visual style on Switch.
Square Enix has said that it wants to remake more games with HD-2D visuals, and while there are some deserving, missing classics that we'd love to see, how can we deny one of the best Final Fantasy games a true remake?
Oh, and if you're really not convinced, we have two words for you — opera scene.
Comments 124
I just want to be able to play them on my switch, and for the most part, I can play the ones I want to. Not every game needs to redone and are just fine the way they are.
I’d rather just see a sequel to link between worlds instead of a remake of lttp. Or even just port lbtw to switch.
Crystal second? Ok its still early. All great games.
Two words: Golden Sun!
In case you weren't aware, the Pixel Remaster version of Final Fantasy 6 went above and beyond with the opera scene.
It has 3D modelling and a full vocal performance, beyond what you'd expect for the game.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vS5X57fhEkg
It's kind of like 2D-HD, but doesn't have the bloom or tilt-shift effects you'd associate with it.
An actual release date for Dragon Quest 3
If i had to pick a Zelda game it would be Minish Cap for sure
I'd really love to see the original Survival Kids game get the HD-2D treatment. That was an awesome game that not many people got to experience.
How about ALL of The Legend of Zelda ones?
None of them. I don't want them to just get a new coat of paint, if I wanted to replay them as is I would just get the originals on VC/NSO. I'd want to see a 3D reimagining of some of these games.
Nah. That is what weak companies without fresh ideas do. The last thing on earth I'd want Nintendo to become is Square Enix. I find the company sad and a shell of its former glory. Mired in the past on the shoulders of creatives far greater than themselves. Sorry SE, facts is facts.
@Donutman Yes, Super Mario Kart is fine as is. We don't need to see blocky Donkey King Jr. with shadows.
Honestly I'd be happy with just regular old Chrono Trigger on Switch, (and Mario RPG).
A Demon's Crest remake would be sweet, or better yet, a sequel.
Big props for remembering the existence of Lufia 2. It's one of my favorite RPGs of the 4th Gen, despite never having seen the game through to completion.
Golden Sun, as someone else pointed out, would be wonderful if remade in HD-2D, or at all, really.
I disagree on the Oracle games; I'm still hopeful that Nintendo and Grezzo will remake those in the Link's Awakening Switch style.
I think A Link to the Past already looks pretty much perfect. Like other comments here have mentioned, I'd love to just be able to play pretty much all these games on my Switch, no HD-2D even required.
In the spirit of the article, though. I voted for Final Fantasy VI. Lufia II would be my second choice.
2D-HD definitely would be a better art style for a Pokemon remake than whatever accident BDSPs artstyle was
OH MY GOD you mentioned Lufia II. I love you guys. And yes, I would love a hd-2d treatment for that game too. I’d buy the most expensive version of a physical release of a remake for that game any time.
Such a good game…
@Sonos How is what you find SE to be a fact? It's a textbook opinion
@Browny you should try to play it till completion.
The last couple of story bits in Lufia II are the best part. Maybe one of the best parts in any rpg i’ve played. That moment that Jeros starts to talk snif. And that moment with the mirror…
All of them. All of the things.
... Wun can only hope.
I love 2D-HD graphics but please apply it to NEW games, like Octopath did. We already have more than enough remakes.
I think it's time to stop calling Final Fantasy VI like that... It's NOT FFIII. It's really confusing, and there's no point anymore.
Having said that, I'd loved this to happen! I would like to see more companies taking their own approach in this technique. Although SE has some of the most suitable games for this, such as Terranigma, Chrono Trigger and FFVI, not to mention Xenogears. Gosh, I'd loved to see those games remade!
For the Zeldas, though, I think I'd rather have the Link's Awakening style, honestly. Love it!
Terranigma, long overdue for another release in any format
Ah yes, classic Nintendo games Final Fantasy VI and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow...
Honestly, I'm not sure about sidescrollers in HD-2D, seems to be better suited for top-down games. A Super Metroid remake in particular would be hugely divisive. I'm of the opinion that the game could use some physics and combat/overall control upgrades, but it would be a tall order to pull that off while still maintaining the atmospheric brilliance of the original. I'd much rather just get another brand new sidescrolling metroid than yet another remake. Dread was great, let's keep the train moving.
I don't think HD-2D is the answer to everything.
Imagine if Link's Awakening was in that style instead of what we got on Switch? That would have been awful!
@Kimyonaakuma indeed, we need the other GBC Zelda's, but then in the Link's Awakening style.
These are all good picks, but I’d be most happy to see another Zelda in the links awakening for switch style.
I rather see pokemon BW/BW2 get the HD-2D treatment once their remake turn happens than pokemon crystal TBH.
@Friendly
I think I make it about 20 hours in before I ultimately give up or something else draws my attention away.
I'd like to think some day I'll have a chance to finish it. Just need to wait for the next genuine lull in gaming releases that interest me before I commit to it.
An HD 2D version of Super Mario Kart was maybe the best idea I've ever heard until you mentioned changing the controls. Yuck.
I would also like to nominate Ys 1&2.... even though they're not really SNES games.
SNES Super Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi please! And throw in the NES versions of SW and ESB to make a Star Wars collection! Oh and as for the choice, Zelda link to the past.
Would side scrollers look as good in the HD-2D style though? Octopath, Triangle Strategy, and Live A Live all had a sense of depth to them.
But I'm all for remakes of old masterpieces though.
Mariokarts definitely do not need remakes, and a mariokart in this style would probably not look very good unless they'd manage to pull off an artstyle that makes it work. Now, Chrono Trigger and especially pokémon sound like great ideas... aaaand the legend of zelda games would kind of fit but I liked the clay look of Link's awakening quite a lot too. Plus, link to the past already has a link between worlds, we don't need that game again. New 2D Zelda games, where they at? I know everyone is looking at BOTW2 but I'd love a new 2D Zelda sometime.
Super Mario RPG needs this kind of remake
I think you chose the wrong Pokemon game for this list. Whilst an HD-2D Crystal would be pretty cool, there's only one set of Pokemon games that I think HD-2D would be perfect for:
Other than that though, I think Golden Sun would be absolutely perfect for this kind of style. Bring Camelot back and make a remake of the first one with those kinds of graphics? MUAH, PERFECTION.
@bozz do you think SE is as good as they were to about 2010? Does anyone who isnt lying?
A Link to the Past is already perfect.
Castlevania and Super Metroid need to be swapped on this list. The Super Metroid entry starts with the sentence, “Another side-scroller!” and it’s the first one discussed. Then the Castlevania entry writes, “who's to say sidescrollers can't also adapt to that HD-2D style?” when one has already been mentioned directly above.
@Munchlax and Front Mission remake
@aughra and donkey kong country 1 and 2
(I just got out work and my replies are super lazy)
None of them. These are some of the best-looking, most thoughtfully-designed games ever made. They absolutely do not need to be remade. They need to be made available in their brilliant original forms on Switch so people who have never played them can get to do so. HD-2D is fine for new games but there’s zero reason to remake any of these classics.
@Sonos I don't really care? I've gotten a handful of SE games since then, I've enjoyed virtually all of them a great deal. My point was you were passing off straight opinion as fact.
Terranigma for sure. Never played it but I liked illusion of Gaia. For Final Fantasy vi I would love a full 3d remake, that will look incredible.
@Krambo42 The controls in Super Mario Kart are garbage lol.
@HammerKirby I love them.
The Steam version of Chrono Trigger with OG graphics. We couldn't tell what the heck we were looking at on old CRTs so it's like HD already.
I hear Lufia 2 already got a remake as a DS action-RPG.
Super Metroid doesnt need a remake(the game is nearly flawless).
I will stand everyday, super metriod doesn't need a Remake, but Secret of Evermore deserves so much.
The hd-2d style doesn’t fit everygame. Mother has such a distinct style, I’m not sure it would benefit from it.
I would love to have a super Metroid remake in Metroid dread style. Would pay full prize.
You got me thinking. Super Mario Kart in a Paper Mario aesthetic would be a curiosity. Not sure how much value it would be.
I always thought that the original Zelda redone with the manual's art style and some modern gameplay updates would be sweet.
The Opera Scene from FF6 was completely remade in HD-2D style in the Pixel Remaster version.
Can we just get all of them remastered/ported? Except for that mystical ninja game, I have no clue what that is.
Golden Sun Duology
Pong
Asteroids
Glaxians
Missile Command
Colossal Cave Adventure
I feel like a remake is the only way the west will officially get Mother 3 at this point.
OMG it actually says Lufia!!! I LOVE THAT GAME! That's the game that turned me to RPG's. They should make a remake of it (even though it was remade for the DS, but that was not the 2,5d HD remake I want to see).
Live-A-Live already had an HD-2D remake though.
One of the Wario games
Dynowarz: Destruction of Spondylus.
...
And here, I'm thinking of SEGA's RPG's getting the same treatment too...Shining Force & Phantasy Star 2 & 4?
Legacy of Goku series
@Barbara001 both lufia games were great!!
I don't think I'd want to see most games remade in that HD-2D style. I like it more for new retro-style games and maybe some more forgotten gems like Live A Live. The first couple Pokemon generations already got more detailed pixel remakes, so I'd be fine just having some way to play those on a modern system. And I think I'd rather see most 2D Zeldas remade in a similar style to Link's Awakening, though the opening/closing cutscenes from that made me really want a Zelda game with a hand-drawn look, too. For anything else getting remade, I think I'd prefer the pseudo-retro high detail pixel art that we've been getting more from indie games.
Some of these games are arguably close to perfect already.
My vote is for a pixel remaster of Phantast Star 1 & 2. Both games have some great ideas and features, but are severely held back by antiquated design. These games need a top notch remake with QOL improvements much more than, say, Chrono Trigger.
G o l d e n S u n
Imagine how awesome it would be
Terranigma (really the whole series), Mother 3, FFVI (and V), and Chrono Trigger, Lufia 2 would all be instant buys!
golden suns! they would work so well with the hd-2d aesthetic
I just got Live a Live lol, my body is ready for this game! I hope I like it as much as I think I will.
Long live HD-2D!
@RushDawg The Switch port of Phantasy Star I contains QoL improvements such as options to make the game easier and faster, guides for items, spells, and monsters, the FM soundtrack, hiragana support, and a dungeon auto-mapping feature.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/08/phantasy_star_joins_the_sega_ages_range_in_japan_next_month_new_features_revealed
Would be nice if we could get the SEGA AGES version of PS2 on the Switch as well.
This list is straight up terrible.
Why only one of the Oracle games?
Why do you insist on using outdated naming conventions for FF6?
Why remake a Mario Kart game instead of just putting the tracks in a new game?
Pokemon Crystal? For all intents and purposes, HGSS is a remake of Crystal. There is nothing good that is exclusive to Crystal version and isn't in HGSS. And honestly, while I would actually like another gen 2 remake because it's been over 10 years and HGSS are actually closer to the original GSC games than the current date... It wouldn't turn out nearly as well with how Game Freak is now. HGSS will simply never be topped, and it would be crushing to see gen 2 get remade again, but be worse than already existing games.
I’d want Super Metroid in the style of Ori if we ever got a remake of that, a proper nice fluid painterly looking version of it would be amazing. Games like Ori (the second one especially) and Rayman Legends just look incredible and a Metroid game remake or otherwise would fit perfectly.
For HD2D though my pick has to go to Chrono Trigger
I voted Chrono Trigger -I don't really care about the graphic style, I'd just like to see any type of cool remake of it. I was very tempted by Terranigma just because it never came to North America and I'd love to play it finally on Switch. The idea of Super Mario Kart (snes) with really gorgeous art but everything else identical would be a combination of amazing and hilarious.
Look, I love these games, but I don't want them to be remade and be charged $60 to play them again - I want them on the virtual console for like $10 like they've been available on for the past decade. The Switch can handle it and, though I'm sure the remakes would be rad, I can't support them for the cash grab that they are.
I have a hard enough time with this visual style as is, I definitely wouldn’t want to try it in (occasionally) fast paced games like Zelda or Metroid.
I’ve read two articles here today and seen the word “stunning” four times. I’m tired of this word.
Wouldn't Metroid II: Return of Samus be a better candidate for an HD-2D remake? Game Boy graphics don't upscale well, and I think the fanbase might be a little more receptive to that game being modified vs. Super Metroid.
Definitely Pokemon Crystal. But I would also prefer a reimagining of the region itself, with redesigned / fleshed out towns and routes.
So if I had to choose, I would choose a full remake rather than a remaster. Despite loving Let's Go with its art style and rerecorded soundtrack, the region was a 1:1 remaster of the original towns and routes. I would prefer a complete reimagining of Kanto to resemble Tokyo and its surrounding prefectures. And while we're at it, Crystal/Let's Go Johto could be reimagined to resemble the Kyoto area.
I'd rather they make all new HD-2D games than mess with classic titles.
Id say Chrono Trigger FTW. Then re imagine Super Metroid in the style of Dread and I will die a happy man. Now if we are going full on ambition, remake super Mario RPG and my head will just explode in joy
3D REMAKE >>>> HD-2D
@EriXz I was thinking M&L Superstar Saga but the sprite work of the original game looks really good still (it honestly looks better than the 3DS remake imo). Super Mario RPG could totally use a glow-up in HD-2D.
not a fan of the hd-2d format
Of all the Enix and Square games of the past, the only one I've heard about that has not made the jump is Terranigma. It is time and I'll take it in any format as it comes.
@Sonos Nintendo is well on its way, following in SE’s steps. SE is simply further along in the process.
@zbinks Samus Returns was a remake of II, and the reason we (unfortunately) got the series going the direction Dread took it.
But a proper, pixel remake of 2 with slightly updated gameplay would be a welcome sight.
I am still yet to play Chrono Trigger (and Half Life 2) of all the classics.
I voted for FFVI though would be happy with the pixel remaster.
I absolutely forgot that Lufia and the sequel were a thing. I had those in the 90s on my trusty SNES Disk Drive. And Mystical Ninja - that was great. I confused that with the recent Pocky and Rocky release.
During my 2 week work experience I discovered a guy working there had a disc drive too and we swapped then copied the games we had. Those were the days!
Possible contenders for this list:
Shadowrun
Tales of Phantasia
7th Saga
Secret of Mana (I was so disappointed with the last remake)
BTW - I haven't played pirate games this century.
@burninmylight I've heard people have say that the PS2 remakes of the Phantasy Star games look nice, but will feel like the $25 games they were priced at once you play them.
Good lord, that was just a list of my favourite videogames, I'd love terranigma but bruhhh gimme oracle of seasons
I’ve never played Chrono Trigger, but I’ve heard a lot about it and really want it on switch.
The fact that you didn't put Golden Sun 1 and 2 on here is discouraging!
I disagree with HD remakes from the SNES era. The graphical style is part of the charm. It is frustrating that the years back updated Chrono Trigger is available on Steam and mobile, but not on a Switch. I'd support widescreen versions of the titles you mention with some QOL improvements, but the titles I wish to see score HD upgrades are NES and GB ones. Like Link's Awakening. While the SNES pulled off some gorgeous visuals, things in the GB and NES days were still kinda creaky and would benefit the most from a makeover
Seriously? Chrono Trigger? A g a i n? Come on, stop living in the past. There are a lot of other games much but much better that deserve a 2DHD Remake not listed here, like Treasure of The Rudras SNES, Super Robot Taisen Exceed NDS, Luminious Arc 3 NDS, Xenosaga 1 & 2 NDS and so on. Not the same Oldies again and again. FF 6 has been re-re-re-re-remade on all posible consoles even on Android. Come on? Don't you people get bored to play the same game 10 million times????
@sleepinglion you are wrong there are many great SNES games we never got in the West.
@indieGOjoe exactly Golden Sun not the same old same old same Chrono Trigger or FF 6
Crystal Remake with HD-2D ???
Don't give me hope )
Nah. Nothing deserves HD-2D. I don't even get what's so 'HD' about it. It looks awful. These games deserve REAL remakes. They deserve better then this garbage you seem to love so much.
@Gamesface I’m surprised this didn’t at least get an honorable mention.
Golden Sun.
And maybe Donkey Kong Country trilogy?
I'd rather Square just released their masterpieces untouched, and used their resource to create new games.
This obsession with remakes of video games, is strange to me. No one wants a remake of Mona Lisa, Abbey Road or The Godfather.
Super Mario Kart because it's the online where it would make a significant difference, especially to add 4 player split screen.
The main one I'd add to this is Super Ghouls and Ghosts and, especially its successor, Demon's Crest.
I don't think action games would work in HD-2D.
RPGs like Chrono Trigger are a no-brainer.
@larryisaman Too right! Ori and Rayman are visually stunning and Super Metroid would look so cool in this style. They would have to keep the physics exactly the same though. I didn't really like the look of Samus Returns, I just felt it was too gimmicky.
You forgot Golden Sun!
Its called keeping your retro games, or buying a raspberry pi with all these classics on.
@Barbara001 I expected you to respond to seeing Lufia II too Hi again.
Secret of Evermore. 2D-HD doggo all the way!
@JoeM103 I wouldn’t really mind them messing with the physics, I think Dread is the best feeling Metroid game so that gameplay mixed with Super Metroid would be perfect for me.
Agreed on Samus Returns though I feel like that was held back by the 3DS more than anything
@burninmylight
I am a huge fan of the Switch SEGA Ages port of Phantasy Star. It features pretty much all of the QOL improvements I’d want to see in a HD 2D PS1. That said, it still has 8-bit graphics and sound; I’d love to see Phantasy Star in modern HD 2D.
Frankly, Phantasy Star 2 needs a HD 2D remake (or a SEGA Ages version) more than the first game. The original version of Phantasy Star 2 is much rougher than the original version of Phantasy Star 1 (though I’d argue 2 has more potential for greatness if it’s issues are fixed).
As for the PS2 remakes of these games, yeah, it does suck a little that we missed out on these. However, the PS2 versions are low budget, cheap looking games without much in the way of QOL improvements. Phantasy Star as a series deserves better; it deserves the big budget HD 2D treatment.
@larryisaman For me the thing that made Dread so good was the atmosphere it creates. Don't get me wrong, it plays very smooth and I really enjoyed it but I think Super Metroid just takes the top spot for immersion, story telling and the controls for Samus are, in my opinion, perfect. The menuing between missiles, power bombs etc could be better but it was limited for the controller at the time.
What I would want is the exact same game but with a new skin over the top to make it more up to date and a way to button map to get around the menuing.
@Donutman Lufia 2 though was pretty buggy, they shouldn’t just drop the ROM for that one.
Terranigma is amazing!
@Sinton But people do enjoy the Godfather in 4K and Abbey Road on modern sounds systems with remastered audio. The Mona Lisa is different, of course, but the way we interact with video games makes them more comparable to movies than paintings, anyway.
@Donutman Couldn't agree more. LTTP is brilliant and one of my all time favs, but it's fine as it is. LBW was an amazing follow-up. Bring on a sequel.
@hel105 Sure, but there's quite a leap from higher resolution (remaster) to a remake. It's like Disney remaking their classics with real life actors.
@Friendly hahahah, I thought of you instantly!!! Cool right, they actually mentioned the game!!! We're not the only ones who remember hahaha!
@Sinton That's true. I think there can be value in a remake, though. I really enjoyed the remakes of Final Fantasy IV over the years, and it's nice to be able to choose which version I'd like to play. But that only works because the game is so good and worth playing in a variety of ways, for me. I guess someone else might see those as wastes of resources.
Out of those i would say either Mother 3 or Terranigma (though with the latter i would be more than happy to see the original come as part of a collection like with the mana games)
With the FF games i would be fine just having those remasters available on console and having square save the remake treatment for one of their older unlocalized games like they did for live a live.
Why dont you just ***** in some tin foil, flatten it out, and present it to Nintendo as a brand new disc game? Thats what it sounded like to me. You wanna take a delicious meal already made for us, eat it, crap it out, rewrap it as something new and improved, and sell it to us for 60 bucks. Your list is literally the worst I've read on this site, and someone once said Secrets of Evermore is a terrible game. That WAS the worst opinion, till today. Yours is.
Super Castlevania IV
10,000% don't want an HD2D version of Chrono Trigger. I've wanted to see a full 3D remake since the days of the Chrono Resurrection project. And later on, the Trials of Mana remake defied my expectations and gave me a taste of what an old school JRPG could actually look like when properly remade (which is to say, incredible). HD2D would be a massive disappointment compared to what can be done with a 3D remake.
I voted "Something Else"... specifically EarthBound.
Zelda 2. Keep the 2D sections but give it a proper 3D world to explore instead of the overhead map, dial down the difficulty a bit and add some QoL features.
I honestly don't understand why Chrono Trigger was not in the first 3 games ever made. Hell, it deserved a remake/repaint/2D-HD remake before Secret of Mana did.
Being on so many games at once, I've been putting off a replay of CT since a few ywars because for me it's just so evident that there needs to be a remake of this.
I think Pokémon Crystal would be really cool to see for an HD-2D remake. Include all of the HGSS content and maybe add some new content with a storyline. I think the Octopath Traveler style would fit Gen 2 more than any other generation.
@darkswabber Nah. I'd want a full 3D reimagining for Gen 5. I wanna see Unova scaled up. Imagine Castelia as an actual city.
