If you've been anticipating WayForward's upcoming beat 'em up sequel River City Girls 2, we've got an update.
Following on from last week's December release date for Japan, the company's official social media account has now confirmed the game will be arriving "sometime after" its originally expected "late summer 2022" release window in North America.
To balance out the news, it showed off the game's cover art:
It seems we've hit the crunch time of the year for many game developers, with Firaxis yesterday announcing it had decided to delay the release of Marvel's Midnight Suns (again). River City Girls is currently scheduled to launch in Japan on 1st December, according to Famitsu.

Somehow I haven't played the first one and still looks really good. Is it as good as the Shredder's Revenge? Cause that game is awesome.
sometime after summer 2022... so, Spring 2086? 🧐
Take your time. I have more then enough games to hold me over.
Take your time. I will be there day 1.
@Ryu_Niiyama @Snatcher pretty much what these two said.
The cover art looks really good. Definitely day 1.
I hope for lulz it comes out on like September 23rd 2022. Which is indeed, a time after Summer 2022.
@JeanPaul Yes! In my opinion, it’s better than TMNT Shredder’s Revenge, and I love that game.
🔹️I played a bit through the first Game and thought it was OK but is now on my 'to sell' list.
@JeanPaul
It's a pretty fun beat em up, has a bit of RPG elements where you level up and unlock new attacks. Shredder's Revenge is better but River City Girls should be a fun time for you still.
I missed out on a physical copy of the first game. But I'm glad to see it's coming to Best Buy for PS5, so I won't miss it this time! Hopefully this has a physical release as well, so I can pick up a copy for Switch & PS5!
@DTfeartheBEARD You can still get a switch physical copy from play-asia for $39.99, with English, if you're interested.
@Roz1281 I didn't know that. I appreciate the info. I have some imports I wanted to order from Play Asia, so I'll probably add that to the list. Even tho I just pre-ordered the PS5 version...
I loved the first one, can't wait for this sequel 😃
I've heard about this Series (maybe on the 3DS?) for awhile now.
i've Enjoyed playing Beat 'em ups over the years, and i'm really excited to try this and the 1st game As Soon as I Can.
If it needs polish, they should take their time.
Although with all the delays as of late, companies ought to just wait until a game is pretty much finished before giving any dates.
@JeanPaul
It's better than Shedders Revenge, it's fully voice after, often hilarious and has a ton of stuff to learn and unlock
What a year for bmups on Switch! What a time to be alive! Can’t wait to get my mitts on this and... BARF all over it.
I’m fine with it. I’ve got too much I’m in the middle of right now.
@steventonysmith @FX29 @BlackMayge thanks for your replies, it's settled, I'll definitely get the game.
@JeanPaul it depends on what camp of beat em ups you like. If you like the RPG feel of River City Ransom/Castle Crashers/Scott Pilgrim, then this a great fit. Very progression based, as a result enemies are a little more damage spongey and the gameplay feels a little backend weighted. If you are more of the side of Shredders Revenge, SOR, or Fight N' Rage where most of the moveset is there from go, and it feels more arcadey; this game is not those.
@NintendoJunkie
Exactly. It's very subjective. I played River City Girls into the ground. I have also enjoyed Shredder's Revenge, but on an entirely different level. I'd hardly say it's a better game, because they both do their own thing so well.
@JeanPaul I loved it. Got the Plat trophy 3 times (1 for PS4 and 5 separately) and helped my brother out with his version.
