Yesterday, Pokémon artist James Turner - known in recent times as the art director of Pokémon Sword & Shield - announced he had moved on from Game Freak to form a brand new game studio with his old friend (@onebitbeyond), known as All Possible Futures.
Turner at the time teased the studio's first game - stating how a reveal would be taking place "very soon" and sure enough, this game has now been revealed during Devolver Digital's latest presentation. Introducing The Plucky Squire - launching on all platforms including the Switch in 2023.
It follows the magical adventures of Jot and his friends - storybook characters who discover there's a three-dimensional world beyond the pages of their book when the villain kicks them out. Players will jump between 2D and 3D worlds in this action-adventure while solving puzzles, boxing badgers and even flying around with a jetpack.

Looks great.
Waiting for physical release in the future.
Take my money.
Looks super creative and awesome. Look forward to seeing more.
Maybe Gamefreak should let their content creators be this creative when they still have them in house :/
Wow that looks awesome.
That looks really cool.
This game looks fantastic!
Devolver Digital always pulls out all the stops with their presentation.
I was surprised to see this tucked in there.
Definitely bookmarking this one. Getting all the good retro Nintendo vibes!
If the controls of this game are the same as the art style, it's gonna be amazing!
Love the art style. Devolver really doesn't publish anything boring.
Looks amazing.
Love the whole concept.
Physical version please!
I haven’t seen a trailer for a game and was impressed, in a loooooong time. Looks like fun.
Edit: Watched the trailer a few times. Really enjoyed that.
This looks incredible. Really looking forward to this game, it's very impressive for such a small team
Looks lovely!
It does look good. I'll be keeping a close eye.
Clearly that guy spent too much time at Nintendo
This looks absolutely stellar! Few indie projects really grab my attention (if that's what you'd call this--I know it's coming from a seasoned developer), but this one is really ticking all the right boxes for me. Probably the closest we'll ever come to having It Takes Two on Switch. Square should hire them to properly port Kingdom Hearts; it already looks like Andy's bedroom from Toy Story, lol.
This was a highlight of Devolver Digital's show. Looked amazing, borrowing and expanding on some concepts in Mario Odyssey.
As a Pokémon fan this makes me so sad… they have this kind of talent and don’t even use it! This game looks amazing!
Devolver Digital has the talent to pick very appealing games. The yesterday’s presentation contained more interesting games to me than Geoff‘s show.
I was kinda sceptical when I found out it's sword and shield art director, but it looks very cool actually
I watched this in the devolver digital event and was blown away. The aesthetics are amazing, and the game itself seems wildly creative. Definitely one I'm keeping an eye on.
Looks absolutely wonderful.
Reminds me of evoland... I'm in!
Please! Adopt my wallet!
VERY cute looking! And Devolver is on publishing? I'm impressed!
Agree with every comment here, this game looks stunning! Didn't expect it at all. Such a creative and interesting concept. Looking forward to it!
@Sidon_ZoraPrince They do. IIRC, in a magazine interview for Harmoknight, they discussed how they have 'Google time' where they take the latter half of a Wednesday off to work on their own individual personal projects for leisure. That's how Harmoknight and, I'd speculate, how other games came to fruition.
OK, this looks amazing
Wow, this looks incredible! What a fantastic trailer 😍
Not sure I've ever seen such an overwhelming positive reaction from an indie game trailer. Even Reddit loves it, and they hate everything. This looks like something very special.
That's gonna look so ugly downgraded for Switch sadly. Looks like a cool game though.
Now this is one "2D & 3D mix"-style game I'm keeping my eyes on, this looks incredible! This game was the hightlight of the show, in terms of newly announced games, imo.
Game of the day yesterday. Just totally amazed. This is what you can do with a clear vision and great art direction.
Well, can't ignore this game. Lol
This looks absolutely amazing! So this is what an independent studio can make without the funds of pokemon corp
This looks absolutely stunning. As someone who missed out on A Link Between Worlds, the vindication I feel seeing this is immense.
Highlight of all three shows, looks absolutely wonderful
Now THIS....
THIS looks like a promising game if I've ever seen one
Started off liking the trailer but when they opened it up to 3D, I looved it.
Nice surprise looking forward to playing this, day one purchase for sure.
@martynstuff oh i didn't know that that'spretty cool. Would be nice to see the creativity and innovation from those titles spill over to pokemon though.
That looks fantastic! That's going on my wishlist!
Wow this looks fantastic! It had me even before it moved into the 3D world.
This looks absolutely amazing. I can't wait to play this one! Hope it gets a physical release.
Looks like another gem from Devolver. Cannot wait to see more.
@kerplunk Same here. I went from sitting back pleased to sitting upright. Wow moment.
It's overwhelming how amazing this looks. I hope it plays really well. This is exciting!
I love James Turner's art style, take all of my money.
@SteamEngenius can you just go away already
I saw this on the Devolver Digital event and was really impressed by it! Need a physical version!
