Sonic the Hedgehog 2 might still be in theatres, but Paramount Pictures and Sega Corporation are already preparing for the future with a third movie and live-action series.
In an update, Sonic screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller have revealed at a 'KCC Comic-Con 2022 Q&A' (via Tails' Channel) how the team is hoping to release the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie in cinema at some point in 2024.
Now, moving into spoiler territory... (click away now if you haven't watched the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie yet...)
It was also supposedly mentioned during the Q&A session how Paramount is already seeking someone to play...you guessed it, Shadow the Hedgehog. No names have been revealed at this stage, but it might not be an existing VA (like Tails). Shadow's voice actor could be more like Knuckles - a big-name Hollywood casting.
And if you're wondering about Amy Rose appearing in the future - unfortunately, the producers were unable to answer this one due to a non-disclosure agreement, but apparently, something is "in the works" (thanks again, Tails' Channel).
Miller added to this - noting how the films would keep adding characters as long as there was demand:
“In each new Sonic movie, as long as the people got the appetite for them, we’ll keep adding yet another person from the game universe.”
As for the story and inspiration - there are supposedly plans to incorporate elements of Sonic Adventure 2 and the Shadow the Hedgehog spin-off game into the third film.
The producers are also aware of the demand for Crush 40 music to feature in the Sonic movie - fingers crossed we finally get something like "Live & Learn" in the third film.
This update follows on from an incredibly successful global box office for Sonic the Hedgehog's second movie outing - with sales surpassing the original film. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is now also available on streaming and digital services with physical versions to follow.
Who would you like to see cast as Shadow in the third movie? Any other characters you would like to see appear? Leave a comment down below.

Don't do a live action series, just stick with the film. I'm tired of companies milking their product and thus ruining it (cough..Star Wars...cough...Marvel). Sonic isn't Oscar material, but for what it is, it's very good, let's keep it that way.
Shadow should be voiced by Ross Kemp.
Let me guess… They’re going to massively screw up his character. Am I right or am I right? I’ve almost lost hope at this point.
As long as Shadow has some sort of firearm. Even a NERF gun will suffice.
Keanu Reeves would make for the perfect Shadow casting
Its an absolute given that they will try and get Keanu. He's referenced in the movies multiple times, theres huge fan demand online for it, and he's well loved by all audiences, but especially within videogame culture. Of course, that doesn't mean they'll be able to get/afford him, but assuming they go for a Knuckles style stunt casting rather than a Tails style VA casting (which they will, given it's Paramount, and assumably a budget at least equivalent to the second movie, for easier marketing to mainstream and the free press it will garner) Keanu's easily the first pic.
Second choice if they can't get Keanu will be Pattinson. Many Batman references in the movies, and he has big box office appeal. My personal preference for a Batman style voice would actually be Will Arnett (Lego Batman) but he's nowhere near the star power of Reeves, Pattinson or Elba, from a Q Score or IMDb Starmeter sense, which is pretty much all Paramount execs care about, from my experience.
I like Shadow as a character, and if they follow their previous form of using the earliest game origins of the character (as they did with Knuckles following his characterisation & story beats from the 90s, rather than the "stupid knucklehead jock" from many less loved modern depictions) then I trust that they will do a great job.
However, as a predominantly classic/2d Sonic fan, I'm personally a LOT more interested in what is done with Amy, and I'm heartened to see whats mentioned in this article meaning she's definitely in the conversation. I can see her either being a smaller part in the 3rd movie, or a cameo in it, leading to her having more of a role in the fourth movie or spin off tv series. Either of those scenarios makes it pretty likely they would follow the previous path with Tails, of using one of the established Voice Actors, as they have the star power from Shadow, but will win the fan approval from using a VA. I'd be happy if this is the case. And Amy in the visual/design style of these movies would be freakin adorable!
I agree with everyone, Keanu would be a great pick!
personally i think robert pattinson’s gotta be the way to go, he’s the perfect mix of edgy and strange to play an edgelord hedgehog
Ahh Hollywood creativity at its finest. "Hey it did well, how fast can we pump out sequels now?"
Chip and Dale with the ugly Sonic was infinitely better, and it was still just okay.
Let's start a change.org petition to have them call the movie "Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles."
I think they should use Shadow's current VA but what do I know.
"The Shadow enemy"
@SteamEngenius I totally get what you're saying, and as someone involved in the film industry, and even actively managing a upcoming franchise with decade+ long road map already planned (sequels, prequels, spinoffs, tv shows, all pencilled in, depending on success of the first film) its a real danger to oversaturate the market too fast and prioritise short term profit over building a long term brand known for high quality and that fans will look forward to and continue to be excited for, rather than feeling they are being exploited and milked for every last penny with the first whiff of success.
For example, I deeply love Star Wars. I've worked with Disney freelance for 20 years in various capacities, and since they bought Lucasfilm I'm super proud with all the (very minor but consistent) work I've done with the Star Wars brand on several films, promotional events and product launches... but I personally feel they are risking damaging the franchise by releasing too many movies, shows etc too quickly, so even though the quality is high, it feels less special than it used to. Even before the multitude of shows, releasing one theatrical movie every year started to reduce interest, and releasing Solo just 5 months after Last Jedi was catastrophic and should never have been allowed to happen. The ever increasing amount of Disney Plus shows is repeating that problem, risking making Star Wars feel less like a cultural event, and more like a continuing day to day thing like a soap opera or reality tv (albeit with much higher quality and production values).
Obviously, the same could be said for Marvel or DC - personally I watch all the theatrical films and enjoy them but I find the constant release of streaming shows leaves me uninterested because its impossible to keep up with them all.
However, the first Sonic movie came out Feb 2020, and was clearly planned that a sequel woquld happen, should it turn a profit and be well recieved. The second film came out over 2 years later in April 2022, and again clearly set up for a sequel. The third movie coming out 2 years later again in 2024 seems right to me and is sufficiently long enough to build anticipation without feeling like its rushed or cashing in.
When I initially heard they were planning a spin off tv show as well, I was concerned it was "too much to soon" but there has always been Sonic cartoons, new ones happening all the time, and because each is unique in style and setting and not essential to canon (unlike the MCU shows which all affect each other) , they haven 't damaged the brand so far. Having one of the animated series being set in the same universe and using the same visual style as the movies isn't too much in my opinion... I just hope they don't speed up too much and start going crazy with it.
One big budget theatrical film every 2 years and a single high production streaming series is comparable to Jurassic World, and I don't feel those have yet outstayed their welcome or alienated the fanbase.
Oh, and lastly I flippin loved the Rescue Rangers movie 😂
I hope they can explain how Shadow was created, looking exactly like Sonic, 50 years before Sonic came to Earth, or was likely born, in a way that doesn't sound daft.
Also, needs someone with a deep voice to be the VA, maybe James Earl Jones
It’s gonna be Chris Pratt to voice Shadow
@WeLiveInASociety If your talking about knuckles they fixed him up this movie, and they even made him funny at the same time, wile being a complete badass.
It better be Kevin Hart
It should be Keanu reeves voicing shadow he will nail it like Idris did knuckles voice and I'm happy the fact he's serious character not stupid comic relief it better not be Chris Pratt doing it.
Also I hope Jim Carrey says Yes for third one.
@AndyRogan that ones always been self explanatory, he was just made to look like a not-mobius hedgehog. most of the non-human charecters species tend to look a lot a like
for example, echidnas
its also not like we've really seen that many hedgehogs in the games, its just sonic, shadow, silver, amy & their camelot counterparts.
can't really count metal sonic & mephiles the dark.... as they are technically not hedgehogs. metal being a robot copy of sonic whist mephiles being a half-god and mass of living darkness that took his hedgehog form from absorbing shadow's shadow
I wonder if they could make a movie without a new enemy. To me that would be more interesting.
I believe Chris Pratt dabbles in voice acting and from what I hear, he's so cool.
@Lordplops Have you watched the Marvel and Star Wars Disney+ shows? They're extremely good.
@ImagineerNik how dare you
I would like them to somewhat adapt the story of Sonic Adventures 2 since they are using Shadow. So I would like to see them also use Rouge, Maria and Gerald Robotnik. And maybe Big the cat.
@Snatcher No, I’m talking about Shadow.
@Mauzuri Alright, fair enough. I haven’t actually seen the Sonic movies, I just hope FOR ONCE they fix Shadow.
Gilbert Gottfried would have been perfect for Shadow
I wouldn't mind if they actually brought back another VA for Shadow such as Jason Griffith, he is still my favorite Shadow the Hedgehog VA so far, the current one is ok but kinda a bit too quirky sounding imo. Or another non-Sonic VA like they did with Sonic himself (i still cannot stop hearing him as Dewey Duck sometimes)
But seeing as how well Paramount has been doing with the casting of this film series, I think whoever they pick will be great. I was skeptical about Knuckles at first but he turned out awesome, so I think they've earn my trust by now, I'm just gonna let 'em surprise me.
They need to get Joe Keery to do the voice of Shadow. Anyone else is the wrong choice.
@Mauzuri Alright, I’ll look into it. Have a good one.
Where’s Chip and Prof. Pickle when you need ‘em?
I honestly hate Shadow, I feel like he was the definitive pivot point into the toilet for the series. I would have loved to see Metal Sonic, like he was a contingency if something should happen to Eggman.
But I heard Jim Carrey was retiring from acting meaning a third Sonic movie was off the cards? correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm not complaining in fact this is great news as I really like Jim Carrey as Eggman, I think his performance is just wonderful. I recently bought the Sonic 2 movie on the American iTunes Store because I was impatient waiting for it to come out here in Ireland.
@nessisonett Shadow is related to Grant Mitchell. I knew it all along 😂😂
@WeLiveInASociety I'm kind of surprised you've lost hope. Sonic 2 gave Tails and Knuckles some of their best treatment in years. I've got more faith in the movie getting Shadow right than the games at the moment.
@RubyCarbuncle The situation with Jim Carrey feels a bit unclear. He definitely left the door open to come back for more movies if it appealed to him. And I kind of think he'd like to come back for one more to go full Eggman and have Robotnik further devolve from the guy he started out as in the first movie. But regardless, the third movie can happen without him. Just have to let other antagonists take over.
@FlareKnight Well it’s because that every game after Sonic Heroes with the exception of Sonic 06’, they completely messed him up. More than 15 years of misrepresentation. Although I’m willing to give them another chance, and it seems that they did fix Tails and Knuckles.
I demand Big the Cat, even if he'll be voiced by Seth Rogen.
And soon we'll get another announcement of there being a 5th movie
sarcasm
Sad that they skipped on Metal Sonic.
@Not_Soos
Nah that could have been done with Sonic 2
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 And Knuckles
