Hmmm... five years later, and I say this list needs to be redone because New Horizons was grossly overrated. Yes, I said in a previous comment that it deserved to be at the top of the list, but I obviously wrote that before I played New Horizons for any length of time and realized it's more Happy Home Designer than Animal Crossing. You're bored with decorating? Too bad, because there's nothing else worthwhile to do. Then there's the braindead villagers who say the same exact things day after day after day, reducing them to little more than props to collect. And holidays that can effectively be beaten by collecting all the unique rewards, giving the player no incentive to participate in them again? What were the developers thinking! I've also come around to appreciating Wild World since my previous post and realize that it's actually very good even if somewhat limited compared to New Leaf, which is by far the best game in the series.
Here's how I would rate the series today:
1. New Leaf
2. Animal Crossing (Game Cube)
3. Wild World
4. City Folk
5. New Horizons
Ugh... looks like a typical low brow Illumination movie but with Mario characters. And Chris Pratt doesn't sound like Mario, he just sounds like Chris Pratt.
Wii Sports Golf was probably the best golf game for the Wii despite being a throw away title, so this might actually make Switch Sports worth buying. Bet you can get this game dirt cheap on the used market.
I put 500 hours into New Horizons and really enjoyed it, but I just haven't had the time to play the last few months. I should get back into it, because there's still a lot of stuff I want to do.
@MegaMari0 "I wish EA would release the NFL license from its evil claws like it has with FIFA. Absolutely no respect for the player base."
EA isn't in the business to respect the player base, they are in the business to turn a profit, and as long as a large enough portion of the player base keeps buying their minimum effort offerings, EA has no financial incentive to change their habits.
@Ashunera84 It's all about getting those sweet, sweet YouTube views and ad revenue. But I agree, I hate when I'm prompted to watch a video because someone was too lazy to write a proper article.
Was he high? Did he forget where he stole the cards from? Did he think the victims had forgotten? Or did he really think that it somehow wouldn't raise suspicion to try and sell stolen merchandise back to the people he stole it from? One of those "This is so crazy, it just has to work!" moments?
To be fair, developers and publishers do have the right to protect their products from being stolen even if they choose methods that are of questionable value.
I loved the one they made for the DS, Chibi-Robo: Park Patrol. Too bad they killed the franchise on the 3DS with a side scrolling platformer that nobody asked for.
I can't believe I'm commenting on this, but Mario is obviously running up the stairs based on the position of his feet. If those steps were going down, then his feet would be on the front of the steps and not the top, so unless this is a picture of him in the act of falling, then he can only be running up the stairs.
These ports are almost flawless. My only criticism is that the captions in the first game are very small in handheld play. Portal 2's captions are much better.
As for loading screens between levels, those have always been there, even on the original PC versions.
These ports look great and run great. My only criticism is that the subtitles are tiny when playing handheld, and there is no option to adjust the size.
Epic Mickey was such an epic disappointment. I remember Warren Spector discussing his original vision for the game which was supposed to have meaningful choices and consequences with Mickey's appearance changing throughout the story in response to the decisions the player made. What we got instead was a mediocre action platformer with light puzzle solving, zero choices and consequences, and an obnoxious camera that seemed to actively fight against the player by always positioning itself where it was sure to obscure what you wanted to see.
I assume the voice we know and love will make an appearance early in the movie and will then be discarded as not Mario's real voice (maybe he's just playing a character), and then we'll get normal Chris Pratt voice for the rest of the show.
This game puts even a good PC to the test. Curious how it will run on the Switch. Of course I was shocked when Dying Light was released on our beloved console and ran flawlessly, so you never know.
@Gwynbleidd The DLC is just additional characters. Keep in mind, the game comes with over 300 playable characters out of the box, so the DLC is certainly not essential.
@ModdedInkling It runs well on Switch. Pretty much a locked 30 frames per second. Graphics are not bad, although dynamic resolution and pop-in are occasionally evident.
Regarding the 30 vs 60 debate, that might hold some merit in a fast paced competitive shooter, assuming all other things are equal. But a baseball game where it is essentially you versus the physics engine? Not a chance.
@sketchturner It's a California thing. Apparently there's a law that says you either need to prove your product doesn't cause cancer (expensive), or slap a warning label on it (cheap). Most companies opt for the simplicity of a warning label.
The premise that these games will be gone forever, never to be seen or played again is a false one. It's the internet age. Nothing is ever truly gone. You will be able get these games if you wish, even if some might object to the means.
@Ralizah "Nintendo will forge ahead unimpeded, no matter the backlash."
That's because the backlash is only coming from the easily ignored vocal minority. The overwhelming majority of Nintendo's customers simply don't care, and most people who bought the 3DS have already moved on to the Switch or another system and never looked back. And even a lot of those complaining now will have stopped caring in a year.
The music industry is the only one to get digital distribution right. I can buy any album I want in high quality formats unencumbered by DRM and free to use however I wish. I wish other industries were as forward thinking. Even digital books are crippled with DRM, and companies like Amazon and Barnes & Noble have been known to delete content from their customers' devices.
The idea that you don't actually own something you've paid for, and that access can be revoked at any time without warning, is something that too many people simply accept, and companies are happy to exploit that complacency.
But here's the truth: nothing is gone forever in the digital world. "Enterprising individuals" will always be able to acquire any digital product they've previously purchased.
It's not a bad game and a decent adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes character, but like all of Frogware's games, it has its flaws and obtuse puzzle solutions.
@Purgatorium Worse than that, when Luke was trying to lift the X-Wing out of the swamp, Yoda was using the force to push it back down so he could flex on Luke!
