Disney's Mickey Mouse has been no stranger to video games over the years, from classic The Magical Quest and Illusion series to kart racers, and even Kingdom Hearts. His best friend, Donald Duck, has also been in the limelight plenty of times too — including a bigger role in Square Enix's action RPG series.
Perhaps one of the more notable and recent Mickey Mouse games is Epic Mickey, designed by Deus Ex creator Warren Spector. This Junction Point-Developed game got two sequels — Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two and the 3DS spin-off Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion. There was, however, one more game in development in the series that was sadly cancelled, and it would've starred everyone's favourite cantankerous duck — Epic Donald.

While we've heard tidbits and seen concept art over the years, very little footage from this game — which was in development between 2012 and 2013. But now, YouTuber Slope's Game Room has acquired a short clip from the game after it was sent in by an anonymous viewer of the show.
The footage (included in the video below) starts at around 18:40 and shows both Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse in the middle of what looks like a money vault. Another clip shows the pair running around, with Donald covered by a luminous green shield. This is the first time we've ever seen the game in motion, and it looks like it would've been a great continuation of the Epic Mickey series.
This spin-off was reportedly meant to be based on the DuckTales comics and many of Donald's family would've apparently made an appearance. hey, Scrooge McDuck might have taken us to the moon or something!
What do you think of this Epic Mickey spin-off? Would you have liked to have seen this get released? Let us know in the comments!

Well… now I want it.
It made too much sense for a DD game to not exist… and now I want it!
I always preferred Donald Duck to Mickey Mouse as a child. His meltdowns were hilarious.
I've never been the biggest fan of Mickey, Donald, Goofy and co. as cartoons, although I never really watched them growing up. That said, I've always been very fascinated by the Epic Mickey games and would love the opportunity to play them on modern consoles. Also, the DuckTales remake that was delighted from the eShop. I've heard great things, so...work out the licensing and port it, Disney! And, yanno, tell Square-Enix to properly port Kingdom Hearts to the Switch. I wanna experience all these classics myself for the first time.
I'm heartbroken that my boy never saw the light of day.
I'd be up for a new Donald Duck game if it were good. While we're talking Mickey and Donald, I'd also buy a collection of the Sega/Disney games from Sega's 8/16-bit consoles: The Illusion trilogy, Lucky Dime Caper, Deep Duck Trouble from the Master System and Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion and QuackShot from the Mega Drive.
I was always disappointed that they never made Epic Mickey into a movie, the storyline was great
Epic Mickey is one of my favorite titles, but I had no idea a spin off had even be considered. This is a series that deserves a modern port, nonetheless a sequel if Warren would come back.
I recognize that robot from the one DuckTales episode.
Epic Mickey was underrated, Wile I never beat it in full, the time I had with it was a blast, And by it I mean 2, and as Donald being my favorite Disney character, I need this!
Man, Epic Mickey was just one of those games that was absolutely brilliant, but couldn't get out of its own way. I think if they dropped the half-baked morality system and Disney let them fully commit to the disturbing, twisted tone they originally were going for, it could've been one for the ages. Really makes you wonder what it could've eventually become if they kept the series going.
It was so long ago, hard to remember what went wrong… but I remember the bad reviews killing everybody’s initial hype, and then I briefly played it and disliked the gameplay, too. Not confident this developer was ever a good fit. But this whole dark / twisted / violent / rotten / bleak / dystopian approach was never for me in the first place.
Donald and Mickey games on Mega Drive were fun, and as a kid I always fantasized about something closer to the old school comics, set in Carl Barks’ Duckburg.
I'm not really Mickey fan I would have love to play as Donald Duck such a shame would have played it in heartbeat.
Should have had Donald fighting the evil greedy mouse himself, I'd play that.
Rarely have I been a fan of Disney video games, but I loved Epic Mickey 1 on the Wii. The 2nd game was a bit of a mess but I would love a remake of both on the Switch with a DD DLC (has a nice ring to it). It won't happen though, surely. The darker tone was awesome as opposed the giggly candypopism of those traditional Disney characters
@Sam_TSM hundreds of thousands of new users to platforms every day don't know about the subscribe button. Catering to people entering any space is generally good practice. If you haven't already, I think you might enjoy watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax7f3JZJHSw. It's a nice little experiment of what it's like to play video games as a non-gamer.
Everyone remembers Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion but my favourite was actually the Donald Duck game QuackShot... I just found it more enjoyable. Maybe an Epic Donald instead of Epic Mickey 2 was the way to go.
What about Goofy?
I never quite enjoyed the darker tones of Disney's more recent video games escapades. I loved what was being done up to the 16 bit era. Then again, I'm one of those players who find it much more enjoyable to play Guacamelee than Hollow Knight.
I would love Disney to use their incredible IP and make a solid, beautiful, uplifting, bright colored 3D game - no toys, no microtransactions, no Square Enix.
@d-slice Absolutely agreed. It's a very underrated series.
The Don Rosa Scrooge comics are 100% worth getting more love, so it's too bad this game was cancelled. Anyway, check out those comics.
I would’ve LOVED this. Can’t believe we missed out.
Untitled Duck Game
@LEGEND_MARIOID The camera angles in EM2 made it very frustrating.
Now I want to see a DuckTales RPG.
@Sam_TSM I find the more gimmicky stuff annoying too. The way I see it is that they depend on these subscriptions and interactions for their revenue and, in many cases, livelihood. Until we have a better models to pay content producers on social, seems like the gimmicky stuff will be here to stay.
Epic Mickey 1 was super disappointing. Not nearly the amazing adventure it should have been. Never even tried EM2. It's for the best a 3rd game wasn't made.
Should be Donald fighting his dastardly nephews... they were jerks back in the 1940's.
Also... I remember trying Epic Mickey and it was very slow and gloomy.
I think with shored-up controls and some tweaking to the game's length and pacing, a remake of Epic Mickey could be, for lack of a better description, epic.
This also further highlights just how baffling it is that Mickey, Donald, and the rest of the Sensational Six aren't featured more in more high-profile mediums like featured films and/or video games. I know there's merchandise and their Disney Junior shows. But I would love to see those characters featured more in video games. I would also love to see a movie from Disney Animation Studios starring all or a combination of those characters.
I was thinking about Epic Mickey yesterday and how much I unconsciously like the first game (haven't played the second or the 3DS game). I wish they could have implemented the deformation of Mickey Mouse the more bad deeds you do.
It's no masterpiece by any means, but I appreciate the intention of showing Mickey in a darker tone and in a more mischievous way. I would've liked to see what they had in mind for other games in the Epic Mickey universe.
Epic Mickey was always too dark imo. And while Disney can get dark at times that isn’t why people watch their films or love their franchises. I always felt like EM was trying to cater to ex Disney/anti fans that couldn’t let go.
I am gutted right now.
I would've LOVED to see this! I've preferred Donald over Mickey for years, I feel like you could make this work
Dan is a good friend of mine IRL since 2017 and is one of the coolest and nicest guys in the retro scene, could not find someone more supportive of others and more passionate about the hobby, rather than just doing it for money or self promotion. Highly recomend everyone subscribes if you haven't already, he's a true one off.
My jaw dropped to the floor when I saw this Epic Donald footage drop! Shows how respected he is in the community to be trusted with something like that, thats HUGE. Wow. And given that like me he's also a huge Disney and animation buff, its really fitting
I really like the Epic Mickey games. As a huge fan of the Illusion series as well, the 3DS title that was an entry in both series is really cool - one fo my favourite games on that system. I'd really love a modern port of it, just removing and reworking the touch screen parts.
@cdog555 Yes. That was one of the main thing for me. I can tolerate tempremental cameras as I player in the N64 & PS1 eras, but EM2's camera was awful.
Other Disney games I have likes is the Duck Tales game (Wii U remastered was good), Castle of Illusion, Toy Story 3, Chicken Little Ace. Probably the re-release of Lion King Aladdin too tbf. Think that's it.
Epic Mickey was such an epic disappointment. I remember Warren Spector discussing his original vision for the game which was supposed to have meaningful choices and consequences with Mickey's appearance changing throughout the story in response to the decisions the player made. What we got instead was a mediocre action platformer with light puzzle solving, zero choices and consequences, and an obnoxious camera that seemed to actively fight against the player by always positioning itself where it was sure to obscure what you wanted to see.
Man, I have so much nostalgia for these games. None of them were particularly outstanding, but the first one was a delightful romp for Disney fans and the second was fun enough with a second player. Even the 3DS spin-off seemed pretty solid (with a gorgeous pixel art presentation), though I only ever got around to the demo.
I'm still on board for a remaster/re-release if those rumors from a while back are still worth referencing! Still curious what those new renders for merch were all about. Such a shame that Disney's video game commitments went into shambles after Infinity (also a really fun if flawed series).
It's a shame this was cancelled, it could have been really cool and I actually prefer Donald over Mickey as a character.
I loved Quackshot on the Genesis. Donald deserves more games staring him.
I have deeply despised Donald Duck ever since Kingdom Hearts.
