We've seen plenty of fan art for the Metroid franchise over the years, including some absolutely stunning cosplay creations just a few weeks back. The latest to grace the internet is courtesy of Luis Nieves, who works as a senior character artist at Xbox studio 'The Initiative', presumably plugging away at the reboot of the Perfect Dark series.
Luis's artwork depicts a hyper-realistic version of Samus Aran, complete with what appears to be both her Chozo Suit and Varia Suit (or the huge shoulder pad things, at least). We're particularly impressed with the attention to detail here along with the more grounded take on the character. Being able to see Samus's face has frequently been a point of discourse with fans of the franchise, but we think its use here is sublime.
It certainly makes us wonder what a franchise like Metroid would look like on high-end consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X, or even what a fully fledged Metroid movie would be like! We've seen hints at what the latter might be like in the past, with Jessica Chobot starring as Samus Aran in a fan-made project. More recently, Captain Marvel and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World star Brie Larson expressed interest in playing the role of Samus Aran after dressing up as the character for Halloween.
What do you think of Luis Nieves's realistic depiction of Samus Aran? Have you seen it done better elsewhere? Let us know!

The suit almost looks a little too detailed for me, but otherwise, this looks super cool.
This will be Metroid in 2048
It just doesn't look like Samus to me, more like Doom Gal.
Looks well made, but it reminds me of those gritty reboots or sequels to classic games, like Bionic Commando and the cancelled Kid Icuraus game for the Wii. In fact, my best friend Joey was a gritty reboot back then. He was a gritty son of a
Well thank God he doesn't actually work on Metroid 😅
Not really my preferred style or take on Samus.
That last image, the moody monochrome close-up, somehow suits Samus and the series well. The slender Varia Suit, however, absolutely does not. The helmet and visor - so iconic in this franchise, our one consistent window into Samus' mood and reactions through her long struggles - are also noticeably discordant here.
There is a fine line between "re-interpretation" and alteration, but I think they've crossed it. I cannot agree with Ollie Reynolds here about this being "a more grounded take". Samus' armor has always conveyed power and competence - it is a little bulky, which is unsurprising given all it can do - rather than "form-fitting". It is some beautiful work, though, admittedly. ... I guess I won't mention the strangeness of an Xbox employee doing this...
Metroid Rip off film only streaming on Paramount +1 Extra Confirmed
I hope Nintendo never comes to this, i’m so tired of the industry pushing ultra-realism on everything.
Very skilled. Very skilled indeed. I hope Metroid never goes this direction. But very skilled nonetheless.
I don’t really see much point in trying to make Samus look ‘realistic’ anyway. She can turn into a ball less than half her size. She can infinitely spin jump through the air. She has guns that can shoot through walls.
Also…what’s to say this is realism? Even ignoring the fact it’s all alien tech, having extra greebles and textures and segments isn’t necessarily realistic, it’s just what we’ve come to expect from ‘high end’ sci-fi graphics.
But, very skilled work all the same.
Very nice work, although I'd prefer Samus to stay the way she is. I agree with @Itachi2099, hyperrealism isn't the way to go for everything.
"Doesn't look like MY Samus"...
WTF is wrong with commenters here? No Metroid game that looks like this is coming out, Samus isn't going to look like this in anything, any time soon. This is FAN art. Some genuinely f'ing incredible fan art from an incredibly talent person, just appreciate it (or don't) on its own merits...christ almighty...
This rules, and seemingly basing Samus' face on a young Kim Basinger is a stroke of genius.
Incredible work.
Cool rendering, lots of talent.
My only nit is that her waist is impossibly small (and I assume it's even smaller under the armor). It's okay for women to be represented with strong, healthy bodies.
I would have liked to see a realistic interpretation of Samus' pauldrons unlocking to encase her in a wave field morph ball
The art is very realistic and highly detailed, but it looks less like a woman in a suit and more like a robot with a woman's face. It doesn't seem to compensate for the idea that it's a person (who should be reasonably built and strong) wearing actual armor.
Samus teaming up with Delta Squad would be awesome... though it'd be a short game, she'd wreck the Locusts and Lambent quickly. Hopefully she doesn't make Planet Sera explode at the end, though.
I might be among the bigest fans this franchise have or ever will have and even thou I dont think this hiper realistic looks fits in with the frinchise, it is remarkably well done, as other have pint it out, such a talented artist 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
She's a pretty blonde. That's about the only thing the artist got right.
Impressive art on its own but as a Metroid fanart it kind of fails. Without the iconic color scheme I honestly wouldn't have guessed that this was Samus.
Brie Larson would make a terrible Samus. This art isn't my cup of tea either. I want to say something positive...erm, I like Metroid? Jessica Chobot made an excellent Samus.
I like this tbh. It's art, It's trying something new.
I hope people don't start saying this looks like Brie Larson because blonde lady, she looks more like Lara Croft to me
a hyper realitic artstyle don't fit the Metroid franchise.
Graphically it looks nice, impressive even, but it doesn’t look like Samus at all.
And even if Nintendo had a console the power of a Series X or PS5, I highly doubt they would push Samus’ design to look something realistic like this.
@Keyblade-Dan While it is not in Nintendo's style for the franchise it is a cool interpretation closer to the style of Luis Nieves's previous games they worked on. It is cool! Though I'm sure if they were working on an actual Metroid game they'd stay closer to Nintendo's character sheets.
My opinion on the piece itself? I like it! They are clearly going for a more mechanized look for the armour and the detail on the rendering is impeccable! The face also looks stunning!! Though I wish the blending between the face and the armour was given a bit more attention... but I'm nitpicking on an overall excellent piece!
I'm sorry, but when I see that the visor slides up like that, all I can think of is Anthony Higgs in Other M. Actually he was one of the more enjoyable characters, but I thought it was hilarious how they introduced him with his visor going up and him saying "Remember me?" like even the most diehard Metroid fans were supposed to know him.
Anthony Higgs reveal visor aside, this design is really well done, and definitely something I would like to see in a live-action Metroid movie, but with Brie Larson in the suit!
I guess that the last four years were spent on arguing with each other about how Perfect Dark should be, instead of developing it, and on obsessively recreating Nintendo characters that they were not paid for making, while being funded by Microsoft.
If it was not for Crystal Dynamics coming to the rescue, Perfect Dark would be in development hell indefinitely.
