If you’ve been keeping tabs on EA’s hugely popular football franchise, you’ll have heard that FIFA 23 marks the end of an era. As the final game to carry the FIFA licence before EA parts ways with its partner of 30 years, most multiformat sites have been discussing FIFA 23’s importance as the finale of a long-running series, at least in terms of branding.
For Switch owners, however, this is old news. People can harp on about the end of an era all they like, but as far as Nintendo players are concerned the FIFA series died half a decade ago. What we’ve been getting since then is the video game equivalent of ‘80s comedy Weekend at Bernie’s, with EA propping up the corpse of FIFA 18 on a stick and jiggling it around in the hope that people will believe it’s still a living, breathing entity.
If you read through our reviews of every FIFA game on Switch (all of which were handled by the same long-suffering reviewer), you’ll see a pretty clear example of the stages of the grieving process in action. With the first game, FIFA 18, we were very much in the denial phase. Sure, the game was missing a lot of features that were present in other versions of FIFA, but EA had said that this was because they didn’t want to overwhelm Switch players with too many features at once, and while that claim stank more than Brendan Rodgers’ current season, we went along with it anyway.

When FIFA 19 was released the following year, we moved on to the pain phase, along with anger and bargaining. Progress had been minimal at best, and while we understood that it wasn’t really practical to replicate Xbox One and PS4 gameplay on the Switch, we pleaded with EA to step things up a gear and work quicker towards at least giving Switch players something that should have been possible: full feature parity with other systems. As this was followed by the practically unchanged FIFA 20, 21, and 22, we reached the depression stage, where it had become clear that our prayers weren’t going to be answered.
Now, with the release of FIFA 23, we’ve moved on to the final few phases: our sadness has turned to acceptance, and we’re now at peace with the fact. Simply put, FIFA on the Switch is dead, it has been for a long time, and when it appears again every year, just a few weeks before Halloween, that’s just its ghost popping up to give unsuspecting customers another cheeky, overpriced fright.
That's why the new Ultimate Team Moments feature as seen in the Xbox, PlayStation, and PC versions of the game is nowhere to be found here (or indeed any of the other Ultimate Team features introduced in the past five years). It’s why cross-play is nowhere near the table: after all, how can a game that is essentially built around the Xbox 360 version of FIFA 17 seriously ever hope to interact with a ‘proper’ modern FIFA title? That wouldn’t be cross-play, it would be a seance.

It’s why the Volta street football mode, which has been present in other versions of FIFA since FIFA 20, is still absent on the Switch. Why would you buy a new dress for a skeleton? And as for whether the World Cup and Women’s World Cup modes, which are coming to the other versions later as a free update, will be coming to the Switch too? We’d be very surprised, but for now EA hasn’t even given us so much as a "¯\_(ツ)_/¯" message.
It’s why the revamped set-piece system that greatly improves free kicks and penalty kicks in other versions this year hasn’t been implemented on Switch. After all, the system it replaces wasn’t on the Switch either, so why bother suddenly pretending it’s worth fixing a mechanic that’s numerous iterations out of date?
It’s why, when you go to the FIFA 23 website and head to the page where you can buy the game, the Switch version isn’t listed at all. Even the Stadia version is still on there, despite the fact you can’t buy it anymore because at least Google knows when to stop pretending and actually pull the plug on something to put it out of its misery. The Switch version is truly the Sixth Sense of video games, in that according to the official website it doesn’t exist, even though we can all see it.

And it’s why, if you were to take the Switch version of FIFA 19 and put it side-by-side next to FIFA 23 on Switch, with the exception of kits, rosters, menu images, and the soundtrack you are essentially playing exactly the same game four years down the line with no changes whatsoever to any of the gameplay mechanics or game modes.
Indeed, the sole new feature present in the Switch version of FIFA 23 is presumably only in there because it involves the least amount of effort. The introduction of women’s club football, which adds the English and French top-tier women’s leagues, is undoubtedly a welcome one given the huge boost in popularity the women’s game has seen this year in particular. But since international women’s teams have always been in the Switch version, it’s likely that the addition of club teams doesn’t require a great deal more development resource than the typical roster update the rest of the game gets every year.

Speaking of new teams, you may have seen all the buzz about the fictional team AFC Richmond and its manager Ted Lasso (from the Apple TV series of the same name) being added to FIFA 23. You can probably already guess where we’re going to go with this, but just humour us here...
Okay, never mind, we’ll just kill the suspense: they aren’t in here.
You may be surprised, then, that this review isn’t our usual annual rant aimed at EA for once again delivering a woefully inadequate ‘update’ to Switch players who have once again been treated as third-class citizens. It’s just that, now that we’ve reached the acceptance stage of the grief process, we’ve come to terms with the fact that this series hasn’t just flatlined recently on Switch, it’s been dead for half a decade now.
The only people who should have a valid reason to buy this game are those who only own a Switch, are massive fans of English or French women’s football, and have always wanted to play a game based on one of those two leagues. For that very specific purpose, FIFA 23 on Switch is an acceptable purchase. For literally everyone else, for whom what’s on offer here is virtually unchanged for the umpteenth time, we instead ask that you join us in paying our respects to the memory of the FIFA series, by leaving it to rest in peace.
Conclusion
This is the fifth time Switch owners have been asked to pay at least $40 for little more than updated kits and rosters, and the fifth time we urge you not to reward such disrespect with your hard-earned money. FIFA 23 still plays a good game of football but so did all the other identical ones, so if you absolutely must have a football game on Switch, track down a cheap copy of FIFA 19-22.

At least this review was a good read. Cheers Scully! Yer the man!
Think I'll hang off for EA Sports FC Legacy Edition...
If they do have the brass neck to release that next year, then it should be awarded a 1/10.
The biggest joke is the Switch versions have all sold pretty well. Been quite a few times where the Switch version has been the biggest seller in the UK so EA have definitely made some cash out of these version but are still too tight/lazy to provide a proper updated version of the game.
What I will also say is if someone is just getting a Switch or Fifa for the first time on Switch then Fifa 23 will still provide a great game of football and physically it sells for about 20 quid cheaper than the Xbox/PS versions.
Personally I have enjoyed the 360/PS3 gameplay of the Switch games more than the other versions these past 5 years, gameplay feels faster and less sluggish.
Still a terrible practice from EA though.
I got FIFA19 physical for AUD$9 (approx US$6) and for that price it’s great. I’m not paying to update when it’s just a legacy edition of my FIFA19 game. With over 110 million Switch owners this practice does not make much business sense along with not releasing a Madden game on Switch. EA have missed out on a tonne of cash imo.
Finally a decent and accurate review from Nintendolife.
@OorWullie Thankfully they won't be releasing it again next year since this is the last Fifa game from EA.
Not worth it. There's so many great games coming out now, don't waste your money on this.
Final Whistle is also a Kick Off 2 reference
@RKO_JPL7
Prepare for EA Sports FC 24 Legacy Edition.
For those of us across the pond, I wish EA would release the NFL license from its evil claws like it has with FIFA. Absolutely no respect for the player base.
At this point, it is basically an insult. Nothing more, nothing less. Not to mention taking it off their website as well, but still expecting people to fork out full price. They must be laughing their heads off.
@Dr_Luigi Konami could have the Switch football market to itself if it released a version of PES on it. Or rather Efootball or whatever it's called. I thought the Wii games were pretty good.
@OorWullie
Next two years it will be 0/10. 😝
And next year again it will be -1/10 and it will be negative points every year. 😆
Yikes — I think this is the lowest NL score I've ever witnessed
Picross - More of the same. 8/10
FIFA - More of the same (and I'd argue more effort has been put into any of the Legacy Editions than any Picross instalment) 2/10
As excremental as EA is, at least they're being upfront about the game and that it's all on the cartridge. Plus, you can grab it for as little as AU$22 (US$14) brand new about a month after release (sometimes with an additional freebie via Amazon), so I don't think it's fair to judge it based on its RRP, which one would have to be stupid to pay.
It's still a solid game of football and it's stupid and unfair to give it such a low score when the game/product itself is still decent when other phoned-in games with very little effort put in are praised to high heaven (Picross, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Let's Sing, and Just Dance to name a few franchises with entries that are virtually indistinguishable). I don't see why FIFA should be arbitrarily held to a higher standard. Should EA do more? Sure, and they should be rightly criticised, but to the sum of 2/10? The game isn't a buggy, broken mess, for crying out loud.
First-timers get a decent game to sink their teeth into and established fans get the latest rosters/stadiums and new commentaries, which, when on sale, would still be a hell of a lot cheaper than had this been paid DLC or subscription-based, which is a direction that I would steer well away from.
A nice honest review in their face. If EA face enough backlash maybe they will realize its not right to treat their loyal customers like this.
Women’s world cup means I will get the game on xbox later. But when it is super cheap. I’m still feeding the beast I suppose but for less.
Fifa is trash, no matter what system. But it's worse on the Switch. Even 1/10 would be too generous.
Now we just have to wait and see the sales of this game. I sincerely hope it fails this time, but I know it'll substantially sell in Europe because of football fans being blind to quality and treating this as merchandise more than anything.
Why do you even review these games?
EA: we make the most half-hearted, blatantly cash-grabby Switch ports and then act surprised when no one wants to buy them. We make great business decisions!
If I wanted to play a football game, without any interest in the actual "sport" or the players, this was actually good news, it means I can get the oldest version on any given console for €1 or so, and still have the latest experience. If it had to be handheld, I could get my GBC game Zidane I once found, Inazuma Eleven on 3ds, or whatever, it's all pretty much the same if you just want to kick a ball across a field in a team effort.
And all of this is IF I wanted to.
I do feel like @Silly_G is right though, this game is probably better than the score it got, if this is your thing. It better be after all those years and with all those sales. But acceptance of expected disappointment is only two steps above absolutely zero care given and zero expectations, so I won't say it's WRONG. Had I expected anything from it or hoped anything from it, I'd probably feel the same. BUT if you buy it every years at full price, the joke is actually on you, and if EA's show is sold out every time, what do they care you're all disappointed? They got your money, and they could if they wanted just go around and collect your money for next year's edition already, with or without promises made. It's almost like a subscription, and that (including microtransactions for a constant cash flow) is what the market is about, everywhere, every market. And the people are all buying it. They're even paying taxes for no service at all, only to not be bullied even MORE by the state. And they review their state as "the greatest society ever" because they can't imagine anything better due to lack of imagination.
As SEGA Rally so joyfully declared, or that guy in Alien so hopelessly:
GAME OVER (YEAHHHH / MAN)
@Ironcore Same reason UK con-goers tell newbies to avoid AnimeLeague events. Just because you know they suck monumental amounts of ass, it doesn't mean everyone else knows.
"That wouldn’t be cross-play, it would be a seance." I laughed so much. Very entertaining review
This review read more like a 3 🙃
These games should've gone free to play decades ago ...but people keep buying them every year anyway.
1080p 60fps. More than 90% of switch games.
You know it’s a Scullion review when you see a screenshot of Celtic hacking Rangers 😂
I just don’t understand these hate reviews of this franchise on switch. Yes they really haven’t added anything. That I agree with. It’s basically a roster update. But is not every sports game just to different degrees. Yet there is no way that fifa on PlayStation would get a 2 even though it’s not much different than last year which isn’t different than the year before.
If the complaint is well this is basically a 360 and ps3 game. Well that’s because the switch is in between a ps3 and ps4. In other words it can run the ps3 version at 1080p 60fps or it can struggle to run the ps4 version. I thought this site preferred performance.
I dunno. But just like the other consoles if you didn’t own a fifa game earlier then this is a good game. And just like the other consoles if you did own a fifa game before this feels like a rip off.
And the kids will still buy it, just as they did for 20, 21 and 22. EA executives will continue to sit in the board room laughing their heads off in the bewilderment that Switch owners are still buying this crap and giving them an unearned boost to their profit margins for the brand for very little spent on it.
If people didn’t buy it then this would have died properly after 19.
I wasn't planning on getting Fifa this time around, however I have been given it as a gift so I am obviously getting stuck in to Ultimate Team.
I'd be absolutely delighted if any kind of world cup mode as added, even if it was exactly the same as Fifa 18s DLC with roster updates, but I really can't see that happening. If not, I hope people go back to Fifa 18 to play that for a bit whilst the world cup is on.
Another thing is this will obviously be the last Fifa on Switch (or on any console), and in the future, the last versions on a console tend to be worth a fair bit. Fifa 19 on the Xbox 360 goes for loads secondhand. I'd be surprised if this didn't happen for Fifa 23 on Switch too. What will also help with the value is the fact that there really isn't a competitor, not even PES/eFootball.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. EA sucks and shouldn't be supported.
Its costs 40 box to change the Fifa name from 22 to 23 great idea, fantastic
Goodbye FIFA, you did the Switch poorly and you will not be missed.
Hope the new title will tank in sales tbh because EA needs a reality check.
Yes BUT...I totally get why Nintendo release these legacy editions, and I applaud them for it! I don't play it and never have...but my neighbours son spent £200 on his copy to try to get the best team and kits...that is reckless and silly. At least Nintendo is family friendly and (usually) seem to be against these micro transactions
Time that FIFA kicked out this deal.. just no. Every time I've considered buying one.. just read review and no (well see enough of games in gamefails vids).
TBH the last football game I have played on console was Super Soccer on SNES.
I do follow football, but as a game..? Nah. I was more NHL player.. until it vanished from Nintendo and knowing it has gone same spiral down than FIFA has.
I cannot even imagine how many hundred hours I played NHL95 - could make goals without looking the game. It was times when you got one game per year and you had to be happy with it until next Christmas.
If there’s one thing these annual FIFA Switch reanimations do correctly, it’s giving us a humorous review from Nintendolife. Fun read. Certainly far more fun than this game ever would be.
Going to be honest, I actually like Fifa 23. Not going to lie, I bought Fifa 18 on the day it came out and haven't bought another until now. For whatever reason I've hated every frostbite version of the game so yeah, a modded version of 360 Fifa 17 works for me.
(But if you have another game Fifa 19 or later, skip this).
@Silly_G Well said.
Let's not forget "the best sport game on Switch according to NL" with 9/10 rating aka Mario Strikers Battle League. Legacy Fifa 23 has better features and modes for people to play than that overpriced Mario Strikers.
I really appreciate gaming websites who give EA a fair review. I get so tired of them getting 7's and 8's out of 10 on other websites or 3.5 out of 5. They're garbage. FIFA on Switch, Madden, they destroy otherwise great franchises and deserve terrible reviews.
95% off in 6 months, for those who care.
Unfortunately, this crap sells way too many copies
That's about 3 stars too high... Are NL obliged to give a positive number of stars in reviews? Seems NL reviewers might be taking some under-the-table money from EA (edit, not being serious about the bribe part)
It’s currently the No 1 best selling Switch game on Amazon Uk. I’m always tempted to get it, I’ll wait for a price drop to £20. Yes, it’s the same game with kit and roster update but they’re very important to football fans who want realism, playing 19 with the old squads and kits is naff. Hopefully next year we get something worth of being on the Switch.
I would consider getting this when it is inevitably $20 if it were World Cup themed... but nothing World Cup related?
@Silly_G I can't speak for the other franchises you name. But I think the comparison with Just Dance is a little bit disingenuous.
Now, I completely concede that the core gameplay of Just Dance hasn't really changed. I also concede that an argument could be made the game could theoretically be updated with the new tracks without having to buy a whole new title.
But unlike this game, you're at least getting the same game and experiences as other consoles (as far as I know). So if new songs, modes or features are added, you're gonna get those on Nintendo editions as well (again, as far as I know. I could be completely wrong).
Also with Just Dance, you can get it pretty cheap shortly after launch if you're willing to wait. Since I started buying the games again, for my kids, staring with 2017, I've never paid more than $25.
I agree that maybe this score is a little harsh. Especially when the game is the same game as the Switch 2018 edition. If that game was a decently playable game.
But I can also understand the scoring taking into account the effort put into the game or the lack thereof. Sure, they're upfront about the situation. It's still is a bit of middle finger
The most entertainment these games provide for me are the reviews, lol
Good riddance!!! Here's to hopefully some competition in soccer/futball games once again; to bring out the best!
I hope all sports leagues open up to non-exclusivity with developers once again. Let's see what some different developers can do with the sports leagues we all love.
Even ign called it out so you know it's crap lol
Lazy review. To add a little objectivity though.
If you don't own last season's FIFA and care at all about rosters being up to date, this is worth it. 100%. The game itself is good.
If you own last season's FIFA, should you buy this game? That's up to whoever is making that decision. But you do have the option of updating from '22 to '23 for half price. In my mind, for a full roster update, kit update, etc, that is a perfectly acceptable 'roster update' price. Information that's omitted from this review.
"It's still a $40 roster update, which is ridiculous"
So is not advising people of a roster update option for half that price.
I agree with some of the people here, that too much emphasis was placed on the copy-paste aspect of the game and not much else, considering so many other games do the same both on the Switch and other platforms yet still get stellar reviews. EA deserves a slap 'round the back of the head, but so do the other publishers doing the same with no repercussions.
It truly sucks for long-time fans (which I once was), but at least the gameplay should be reviewed for what it is for those who are new to the Switch FIFA scene and have no way of buying the older versions. If there's not much content that hasn't been covered before, then referring those interested to the FIFA 18 or 19 review would be helpful.
@calbeau You can get Fifa 19 or 20 for under $10 on ebay. Just get one of those if you really want to play a Fifa game on the Switch.
@infernogott Considering my location, the shipping fees will probably be the problem rather than the sale price itself, but thanks for the tip nonetheless.
Anyway, I've moved on from FIFA for the time being. If ever I get the itch to play virtual footy again, I might go for Battle Strikers instead despite its sparseness.
I wish they would put Madden on the Switch….I would pay for the roster update on a nerfed version….
🙂This was the article that got me to sign up for this site.
I'm interested in having a serious football game on the Switch but wasn't sure how it'd be. (I have no other Home Console)
From the comments, it appears its fine as a standalone game and for first-timers.
FIFA is a live game. We don't just pay for a kit and roster upgrade. We pay for all the events that are happening for a year.
What are those?
Oh, and for anyone who already has FIFA 22, the digital price of 23 is only 20 Euros instead of 40. That's a 50% discount.
Sure, for those who aren't very good at this game and won't play it online, this might sound like just a kit and roster upgrade. I personally put in 1000+ hours every year and can confirm that it's not.
What are the owners of the new generation consoles getting in a new FIFA game?
A broken, hot mess where speed is everything and you almost need a pilot license just to defend now. It's borderline unplayable and the built-in cheating system decides the results of the online Ultimate Team matches anyway.
Sure, it looks shiny, sure it has tons of features that the Switch version doesn't (for 70 Euros instead of 20/40).
But if the gameplay isn't there, the game is just not fun to play.
I've been playing the online part since FIFA 13 on PS3.
I would've stopped around 17, if not for the Switch version.
The Switch version, fortunately, has a balanced gameplay. You can actually learn and master it and they won't completely change it by the next iteration.
I rarely say that but in case of FIFA, the unchanged gameplay of the Switch version is a blessing.
I try the other versions every year. I return to the Switch version every year.
It's only a 2 point game for those who don't play it competitively. I agree, for them, any version of it will do fine on the Switch.
@Dr_Luigi : The updated rosters are the equivalent of "new puzzles" in the FIFA games though, essentially being new teams to master (or assume) as the teams/stats aren't identical from one year to the next. My basic argument was that it takes more effort to implement these seemingly minute changes into FIFA (along with any new character models/stadiums) than it would be to produce new puzzles for a game as simplistic as Picross.
Now, I'm not suggesting that the Picross games should be penalised, only that the scorn directed to FIFA is disproportionate given that its changes are arguably more substantial than many other games that are otherwise praised for offering more of the same.
Now, if the Switch had been a more capable platform and EA were deliberately hindering the experience, then such criticism would be warranted, which was precisely why I refused to support FIFA 13 on Wii U back in the day (because the Wii U, briefly being the most powerful home console on the market at the time, got an updated version of FIFA 12, while rival consoles were treated to a real update).
We've all been in that situation where you know you've lost the argument, but you can't back down.
Well that's the situation EA have found themselves in with their stance on the Switch.
Still a good game. Possibly more enjoyable than any other console versions. Simplistic and easy to approach... 7/10
I think it's safe to say that I am the proud non-owner of any FIFA games on any platform. And so the tradition continues, I suppose. I'm not sure what this added to the conversation, but I thought I would throw it out there.
@Kiivi still better than Mario strikers which got a 9. People just love to hate EA.
Sounds terrible! But still sounds better than the Mario football game…
@MegaMari0 "I wish EA would release the NFL license from its evil claws like it has with FIFA. Absolutely no respect for the player base."
EA isn't in the business to respect the player base, they are in the business to turn a profit, and as long as a large enough portion of the player base keeps buying their minimum effort offerings, EA has no financial incentive to change their habits.
@Mountain_Man short term gain is always detrimental. I haven't bought a madden game since 2005 and I haven't played one since 2013. I won't play those games until they change their tactics. I can wait, and I've mentioned this to my friends who have also come around to the realization that paying $70 for a roster update and copy and paste mechanics with old features being rebranded as 'new' is straight up BS. I'm hoping it eventually changes but I'm not holding my breath.
@Dr_Luigi Well, there is that new Mutant League Football on the Switch, but otherwise you're absolutely correct. Unfortunately, it's very risky to try and release an American football game without the NFL license, while EA for some unfathomable reason doesn't even bother to give us a legacy Madden game on the Switch. At least soccer fans are actually getting their sim games on the Switch despite how lazy they are.
@Mountain_Man That argument only works when they actually provide a minimum effort offering. They could make so much money by just releasing a single legacy edition of a Madden game on the Switch, so why don't they do even that much?!
"The only people who should have a valid reason to buy this game are those who only own a Switch, are massive fans of English or French women’s football, and have always wanted to play a game based on one of those two leagues."
You forgot to mention those who have a 10+ year old deleted EA account on their ps and xbox, but EA refuse to unbind these accounts. Pretty much locking people from playing online EA games forever on their consoles, like me. So EA games? I only get them on the Switch.
@KindofaBigDeal They sell well because there's pretty much no other choice if you're on Switch. I would love to see Pro Evolution Soccer 2021 on Switch.
@Dr_Luigi I think Mario Strikers: Battle League is more in line of what you want for an arcade gameplay style experience.
@Miu @sixrings
@Dr_Luigi 's comment is a good refutation of the original post by @Silly_G. It's quite disingenuous to compare FIFA with Just Dance and Picross. While the gameplay of the latter two remain the same, the respective songs and puzzles themselves are totally different, resulting in an overall different experience compared to past entries. This alone does not make things "more of the same" as @Silly_G claims; you can buy a previous version of Just Dance or Picross and have an overall different experience as a result. The same CANNOT be said of FIFA's roster updates, especially considering that the versions on other platforms have features not seen on the Switch version. You can actually just buy a previous version of FIFA and not lose anything gameplay-wise.
Mario Strikers: Battle League at least didn't have other versions to compare to and is itself a complete game (and is thus not overpriced). As long as the other versions for FIFA exist, you can't compare that game to the Switch's FIFA Legacy Editions.
Shame on everyone who agreed with @Silly_G.
Why does EA release games on Nintendo. It never does a good job. Every time Nintendo release a new Console. EA promises nearly EA game on Nintendo hardware. Then after the first release its legacy or does not come to Nintendo Consoles.
The Sony PS Vita was the same. First FIFA great then legacy afterwards.
Its a shame Konami before EFootball never released its version on Switch or 2K never made an Soccer(Football) game.
@PINKSTER007 Yes because parents will buy for there own Children. At least EA has been Honest this time in telling certain features are for PC and Next Gen.
Normally EA gives information and you will think its the same on every platform.
I will say this about the switch version that beats out the modern feature games. I’m not into the Volta or ultimate team crap. I play the game purely for career mode and building up a squad. The MOST infuriating thing about career mode now is players lack of ability to develop or assign traits: both real players and auto generated from youth academy. You have to get lucky to get a random trait for a youth player as there really isn’t a rhyme or reason who gets them and who doesn’t. My 19 year old 88 overall CF has not 1 trait. At least players can develop traits on the switch version such that they actually feel like world class players and not empty shells.
Where the game has earned a 2/10 score, this review deserves a 20/10 rating.
Why even bother reviewing the game? You kinda already knew what the game was going to be like... the exact same game as the last 6.
I got it preordered for 19.99 It was worth that brand new. I have the PC version also. The switch is not bad looking, it just plays horribly.
I haven't bought fifa since '13 so for me this is a solid pickup. I paid 10 bucks! I'm having fun and to me, that's what matters. But, after reading this review, i understand why NintendoLife gave this a 2/10
