Re: Nintendo Still Has More To Share On Switch Online Before Launch

Mortenb

I never play online. But I might pay if it gives me access to games from n64, gc, wii and maybe some SNES. Not really that into nes age games any more. Those games were good at the time, but today are mostly frustrating to play. I don’t see the attraction with the old arcade games either. I guess it might sell some consoles to those who spent their childhood with them and haven’t been gaming since. But I think Nintendo need to sell this service to those who already have a console. Hopefully they reveal more games for the service. I would love a Netflix style VC where a subscription gives access to all content, and new stuff is added regularly.

Re: GameStop Reveals That Switch Sales Doubled In The Week After E3

Mortenb

If course it doubled. Having a presentation about popular games, of which there were many, will generate a lot of talk among normal people. I hate to break it to you, but normal people do not hang out and comment on this page. Nor do they watch E3 or get disappointed about something they never even think about. They simply see an article in some mainstream newspaper that reports on smash bros or Pokemon coming. They think, hey I want to play that, but I might as well buy the console now and get the most out of it before then as well. To a normal person it does not matter that hard core fans already knew about these games.

Re: Federal Government Is Officially Investigating Nintendo For Possible Patent Infringement

Mortenb

To be patent eligible subject matter, an invention must meet two criteria. First, it must fall within one of the four statutory categories of acceptable subject matter: process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter. Second, it must not be directed to subject matter encompassing a judicially recognized exception: laws of nature, physical phenomena, and abstract ideas.

The idea of attachable controllers are abstract idea. The fact that they are attacheable controllers should be irrelevant, only the technology used to make it work is relevant. It's only the actual implementation that is patentable. So if Nintendo implemented this with the same technology as this company, they have a case, otherwise they should not.

Of course, many judges are not philosophical at all, and are easily swayed by any ridiculous argument, or even by personal feelings on the matter.

Re: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Disappears From The North American Wii U eShop

Mortenb

@jimi I don’t know about you, but I have never been under the impression that digital games would remain downloadable for more than a decade. I don’t have a trust issue because of that at all. I do wish they would guarantee the long term availability, but they don’t. It is a long term rental, and anyone is free to not use it. Now it seems the disappearance is over, as expected. Nintendo prefers people to buy physical. I prefer to buy physical. That their terms are not good enough for you is one thing. But it isn’t a broken implicit promise at all it seems to me.

Re: Review: Nintendo Labo: Toy-Con 01 - Variety Kit (Switch)

Mortenb

You shouldn’t give this a score at all. People want different things out of this. If you want a game it’s might be a 2/10. If you want something to build it’s might be a 7/10. If you want to make your own interactive creations it’s maybe a 10/10. Perhaps not. The point is that now people are arguing over the score, instead of discussing what this thing really is.

Re: Nintendo May Be Facing Heat From The FTC Over Its Warranty Policy

Mortenb

Of course such terms are not enforceable. This is only about semantics, not actual practice from companies. Do I need a special Nintendo table to sit my Switch on, or else Nintendo voids my warranty? Of course not. Can I use a non-Nintendo television? Of course. It’s only in the event that a third party device causes damage or would hinder Nintendo’s ability to fix it that this comes into play, and then it is of course enforceable, probably even without this clause in the warranty text.

Re: Nintendo Comments On Third-Party Docks Bricking Switch Systems

Mortenb

@nathan_393 You seem to be correct. I thought there was a compliance requirement for using the name. There seems to be none. I guess in the grand scheme of things that is good, as mostly usb is a wonderful success as far as standards go. Official testing would be prohibitively expensive for all sorts of small companies and even hobbyists who implement usb. However there is a logo one is only allowed to use after compliance testing, which I guess Nintendon’t use.

Re: Random: Nintendo Lands Itself In Hot Water With Norway

Mortenb

Blargh. Stupid beurocrats. If I don’t like the terms I’ll simply not buy the game. The terms are stated beforehand. I am Nowegian and don’t need this stupid hand holding by the government. In fact it is making the population more and more into infants crying about everything that is not exactly as they want it all of the time.

Re: Hackers Get Linux Running On Switch And Claim Nintendo Can't Patch The Exploit

Mortenb

@HauntingNostrils Thank you. The point is, if you want something, you value it, and unless it was given to you or abandoned somewhere, you should give up something that others value more than they value that thing that you want. If one does not live by that rule one can simply sit in ones basement consuming, apparently with no restrictions of reality applying. There is no exception for creative endeavours, letting them exist outside the restriction of reality.

Re: Hackers Get Linux Running On Switch And Claim Nintendo Can't Patch The Exploit

Mortenb

@HauntingNostrils What is Nintendo doing to limit your ability to improve yourself? And if they are why would you even want to play their games? The reality is, in my humble opinion, that before anything can be consumed, it must be produced. Piracy, stealing, and and other dishonest practices removes the individual from this basic fact of reality, also in my humble opinion. I fail to see any argument as to why the apparently obvious link between having to produce value before you consume it and improving one self to be able to produce more value, thus getting to consume the objects of your desire, is invalid. You simply assert something that is not in any way obvious. Can you not see why I would think this link exist? If you do see it, I suggest you spend your arguments explaining why this link is wrong, in stead of asserting is it wrong, and then suggesting I have been told some lie, which in fact is the opposite of what had happened. I have spent years untangling myself from the sort of culturally received “wisdom” you are asserting here, which, true or not was definitely something I was simply told. My current views I have reluctantly arrived at after actually having thought about it. It is a hard view to hold. In deed where ever I turn, I am attacked for it, which seems to me to be what people do when they want to perpetuate a lie.

Re: Hackers Get Linux Running On Switch And Claim Nintendo Can't Patch The Exploit

Mortenb

Not pirating forces you to choose who to give your money to wisely, and gives you incentive to improve yourself. When piracy is ok, self discipline goes out the window. If I can steal my food and think it’s ok, am I really going to work my best and really apply myself to improve my works value to others? I don’t think so. When piracy is ok, willl I really ever feel I miss out on anything? Why even produce value at all if I think I deserve to enjoy the fruits of other peoples labour regardless?

Re: Labo's Cardboard Revolution Adds Almost $1.4 billion to Nintendo's Value

Mortenb

@thesilverbrick You only need cardboard and scissors and folding abilities. I can’t imagine anything that could be simpler. There will apparently also be directions and blueprints for download if I understand correctly. I think any normal six year old should be able to do a good enough job of it given a bit of help and a few tries. It’s probably more difficult to put the parts together than to make new parts.

Re: Labo's Cardboard Revolution Adds Almost $1.4 billion to Nintendo's Value

Mortenb

@thesilverbrick you can make your own replacement parts. I think that is the reason why this might be a lasting thing. I think this might become a great concept kind of like lego if executed well. I foresee software that will let you create your own ideas and interactive toys with simple drag and drop programming utilising the sensors and actuators in the controllers. The possibilities are endless.

Re: Nintendo Announces Labo, A Range Of Interactive DIY Toys For Switch

Mortenb

If this is flexible to allow for experimentation like Lego, but also with software, it will be awesome, and potentially be something you will see in toy stores for the next decades. If it is just making the exact Nintendo designed cutouts with Nintendo special software, it’s less exciting, but could still be popular for a few years.

Re: You Won't Be Able To Download L.A. Noire Without A MicroSD Card

Mortenb

@Hughesy i can’t see why. The cards are the same, you just put more data on them. Software wise it’s really easy, and most likely the game is already written to handle varying amount of the data being there. It would only require two paper prints, telling you how big the card for each. That should cost next to nothing.
