Re: Talking Point: Should Nintendo Create An Apple Arcade-Style Service For Smartphones?

Mortenb

I voted maybe. I would maybe hesitantly get it, if that was the only way to play certain games. However, I would for sure pay more for Nintendo Online for Switch if the correct games were on there in stead. If I didn't already have a Switch, I would for sure get one. The current offering on Switch is too little. Give me all the stuff from the Virtual Console, and I'll pay. They should put all retro-resources into making Virtual Console a service that would work on all Nintendo hardware as long as it has the omph to run the emulator in question. Give us Gamecube and Wii games. I never really got to play Mario Galaxy that much, and I really want to. I would like to play Eternal Darkness as well. And F zero GX. And tons more, both that I played and that I didn't. Gamecube should be easy. Wii is perhaps a bit more challenging to make work seamlessly, but at least get us something.

Re: Creator Of New Checkout Bot Targeting Online Switch Stock Discusses Backlash

Mortenb

What is the world is wrong with this? Helping those who want a switch to buy one? Of course that increases the price when there are less switches. What are you hoping for here, that no one buys switches any more, they sit on the shelves and prices go to zero? It's a good thing if prices rise in a shortage on stuff people actually want. It gives a signal to any supplier in the chain to prioritise this item.

Re: Nintendo Will Boost Switch Production To Combat Global Shortages

Mortenb

@Ketsumeishi What does that even mean? How in the world does one not play that "game"? If we even take a screw to fasten the cover of the switch, and try to analyze how it actually came to be, we are instantly overwhelmed by all the details, and Nintendo has absolutely no idea how such screws are made, neither does anyone else actually. Sure, some know it's shape, some know it's chemical properties, some know how to find the components to make the actual screw, etc. It's virtually infinite complexity, and we haven't even begun to analyse the creation of the things we need to be able to produce the screw, and the things needed to produce the things we need to produce the screw, and so on, ad infinitum. No matter how far one takes it, one can never escape the "game", which isn't actually a game, but reality. Sure one can try, and the only thing one does then is limit the process to such low complexity that producing Switches at all would be unthinkable.

Re: "They're Burying Pokémons" Jibe During Chinese Coronavirus Tribute Causes Uproar In France

Mortenb

I have said much worse things during more inappropriate times. So has most people I know. Thankfully, I have grown up in an environment where such things are not what defines a human, but it is possible to give constructive feedback on it instead. It is horrendously destructive to scream and demand his firing for something so human. It demands coming to his defense, in stead of simply agreeing that yes, this was a bad thing to say, and then moving along.

Re: Popular Tourist Go-Kart Company in Tokyo Loses Lawsuit Appeal Against Nintendo

Mortenb

I absolutely support Nintendos ability to do this. If I see a company's mascot in a commercial setting (or other setting where the mascot is used for associating it's reputation with some other activity, except for the purpose of expression of opinions which takes precedence), I assume the associated activity is endorsed by said company. I believe this kind of identification is pretty foundational to how our society functions.

Re: A 3DS eShop Title Just Launched For An Eye-Watering $100

Mortenb

You answered you own question. It's the price that some expected customer base must pay in order to justify the resources spent on this in stead of other things. Most people think of prices backwards. The price point is mostly predetermined by demand vs resource usage vs demand for other stuff that could be made with the same resources. The question is to identify the correct price point and then it's mostly about deciding to produce the thing given the price point and the amount of resources you will likely spend. You make it if you will make more money than on other projects you might do, and you don't make it if you won't.

Re: Random: Man Steals Nintendo Switch On Camera In His Work Uniform

Mortenb

It's so sad that society's general confusion regarding morals are translating into less mentally gifted individuals ruining their lives. Reality is, people who take from others will most likely end up in a bad place no matter what, but this guy probably heard how right and wrong is subjective, bladibla, etc, and that translates to; be opportunistic, consequences are never under your control anyway, if your life is bad it's someone else's fault. This is a catastrophe.

Re: Random: Mario Gets A Safer Sleep In His Original 3D Outing On Nintendo 64

Mortenb

@FTL I agree that there is a tendency to not fix things since it can be patched later. And it's annoying. However, this is allowing them to put more time into content, and less into meticulous testing. It is a trade of. People complain on both lack of content, bugs and high price. In practice these has to be weighed against each other. In the end, it is customers who decide what should be prioritised. I am firmly in the camp that want shorter games, and more attention to gameplay, and would even accept higher prices if necessary to achieve this. Most people don't share these values though, so most games are created for those people.

Re: Behold The Tragic Tale Of The Man Behind Castlevania

Mortenb

Someone must enjoy what Konami makes. Isn't it a bit strange to say that the stuff you want must be prioritised over what most people apparently want? Or in other words, your profiting of their work must be priority no 1, while at the same time deriding them prioritising theirs.

Re: Indie Game Removed From Switch eShop After Dev Reveals It Contains A Hidden Code Editor

Mortenb

He probably had good intentions. But he should have cleared it with others first. If it is indeed properly sandboxed, it can't cause any harm. But of course Nintendo does not trust a lone guy going under the radar to implement a properly sandboxed interpreter. He is indeed stupid. Probably fresh out of college and thinks he knows everything. These things happen, so he should be forgiven, and not be allowed to commit code for a few years.

It seems silly that this team does not do code reviews though. I put the main blame on the managers and on Nintendo for not demanding this simple way of ensuring every piece of committed code is at least understood by two coders.

Re: Nintendo, Sony And Microsoft All Under Investigation Over Online Gaming Services

Mortenb

Yes, those damn companies better provide my entertainment and I'll dictate the terms, thank you very much!

We are living in the hardest times I tell you! No one has access to entertainment anymore. In the old days there was almost too much entertainment, where children weren't spending time outdoors, and parents were busy gaming or watching TV. Now, it's the opposite, where every minute is spent contemplating the simpleminded things. It's driving us crazy!

Re: Reminder: Final Fantasy VII Finally Launches On A Nintendo System Today

Mortenb

I think this game looks good. The low poly characters are very memorable. The scenery is in my opinion the best in any game. The best about it though, is the musiv. Like with all my favourite games, it fits really well with the gameplay/story, but is also really enjoyable on it's own I think I will quadruple-dip in this one. But unlike the second and third dips, I think I might actually play through it again on the switch. It will probably look better on the smaller screen, hopefully a bit more like my small CRT PC screen used to look. And, the killer feature of the switch, instant sleep and wake up, will make me more likely to find time to play.

Re: Twitch Plays Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Mortenb

My 17 months boy managed to win one battle while holding the switch up side down, so they might do it. PS, he found and started it himself, I don’t let him play normally, nor watch, but I just had to see how it would go!

Re: Anniversary: Nintendo Switch Launched Two Years Ago Today

Mortenb

I recently got an xbone, mostly to check out rare replay. There are also other good games. But damn, that instant sleep/wake up function on the switch is a killer feature for people with busy lifes! I now find myself debating wether I am going to bother waiting for the console to boot and then the game to load in order to play (just like with wii u). Switch is amazing!

Re: Nintendo Will Remove Smash Bros. Ultimate's Offensive Depiction Of Native Americans

Mortenb

@Cero But Italians don’t insist on their self worth stemming from their group and characterisations of one person is not taken to necessarily describe how they in general are. Italians are individuals, and thus do not get offensded by one Italian character bahaving in a way they would not. I don’t think native Americans do either for that matter, but I think a bunch of people imagine that they do, and want to protect them from it.

Re: It Looks Like The Official Super Mario Encyclopedia Plagiarised A Fan-Made Wiki

Mortenb

Seems totally fine by me to use these names if they want to. Legally, it’s well outside any copyright violation. Morally, I wouldn’t even call it plagiarism. If that is plagiarism, the wiki itself is full of plagiarism. For correctness they should consider including the source though. The question is whether they actually want to use these names though, it doesn’t seem well thought through.

Re: Tokyo's Unofficial Mario Kart Service Continues To Dress Up Riders After Nintendo Wins Lawsuit

Mortenb

@Tsusasi If Nintendo teams up, they will be responsible for this. Perhaps Nintendo prefers to be more concerned about safety than earning a few bucks from random events using their characters. If they allow other companies to use their Characters for what they like, they loose the rights to those characters themselves. Nintendo must sue these guys, their hands are tied, especially if they want to use their characters in their own real-life theme park one day. If they allow this, they don't have legal room to deny anyone else to actually start a theme park. Having Mario in an event like this screams "Endorsed by the company behind Mario", more than the Nintendo logo would.

Re: Guide: What To Do If Cloud Saves On Nintendo Switch Online Aren't Working As They Should

Mortenb

I don’t get the big fuss about these cloud saves. Is the only reason to have them that your system might lost or damaged and you won’t loose your saves? I get that it’s nice to have, but I don’t really care that much. It’s just a game. Even when I was gaming all the time I don’t see my self being that devastated if I lost all my saves at some point. Only Goldeneye, I put my soul into getting all the unlocks on it. But such amazing games don’t exist these days. So what is the big deal?

Re: Random: Father Steals "Gameboy DS" From Prize Machine With Help Of His Daughter

Mortenb

As the physical danger would only be a certain risk, while the moral example is guaranteed to set the child on the wrong path, the worst is how this is telling the child that one should simply take what one wants. It basically guarantees a negative impact on this person for a long time, as the mind will wrestle to justify why it deserves this item.

Of course, playing one of these machines is actually sending the same message to the child about attempting to get what one does not deserve, although without the part about how anything is permissible as long as you feel a need.

Re: Your Nintendo Switch Cloud Save Files Will Be Lost If Your Online Subscription Expires

Mortenb

Doesn't sound well thought through.
1. It is a tiny bit less of an incentive to get the service in the first place
2. It is a lot less of an incentive to resubscribe if you have once been a subscriber, and would want access to the old backups.
3. If it's about cost, it would be easy to have a extremely cheap offline storage where it could take a couple of days to get your saves back should you resubscribe.

The only possible reason for this I can see, is if the only reason people subscribe to the online services would be to to take backup and do that very seldomly. For that to be the case, the rest of the services would have to really suck.

In the end, I'm not that concerned about cloud storage of saves though. Not really online play either. So it will be all about the "virtual console" games, which looks kind of disappointing also.

Re: Final Fantasy VII Is Finally Coming To A Nintendo Console

Mortenb

Pretty sure they are going to ruin the game with the remake though, because this game is a story driven game. They probably won't be able to resist "enhancing" the experience, which will end up making the world and story feel less real and more contrived. Really immersive stories usually just happen, and there is something in the subconsciousness of the creators talking through subtle details they don't really understand the significance of themselves. Such details will surely be missed, even if the guys remaking it are the same guys. The game will feel like a different game altogether. If they let that really happen, and make a real re-imagining of the story, it can be really interesting. But if they try to make the exact same story, but somehow "modernized", I think they are doomed to fail.

Re: Random: How Much Would It Cost To Buy A House In Breath Of The Wild In Real Life?

Mortenb

This doesn't make any sense. Steaks are magically created in Hyrule, and their prices are set by a developer. Stores are hard coded to only accept a certain amount of rupees if they have steaks, they do not fluctuate according to availability. What makes you think a house price would in any way follow the same ratio to steaks in a magical, static, by developer rules world, as it does in the real world?

Re: Nintendo Under Fire For Not Improving Supply Lines And Sourcing Minerals From Conflict Zones

Mortenb

Everything you buy is funding some military somewhere through taxes (which is just another form of slavery). How are companies supposed to know where the line should be drawn? I'm not saying they should use these materials, but why should they instead use material from i.e. the US, China or Russia. Buying material from there will also fund horrible regimes that have a known track record of torture, incarcination withouth trial etc. Perhaps Nintendo (or their suppliers) thinks the side they are funding is the good guys who would fix the problems and establish law and order in the place. Who is the best judge of these things?

Re: The US Trader Who Bet $400 Million Against Nintendo Takes Huge Hit As Stock Price Soars

Mortenb

@roadrunner343 Money has not always lost value. Not when gold was money, which was most of modern history, incidentally also in the periods when most wealth was created. Then money was gaining value year by year, as people became more efficient, and more people were entering the economy. Therefore people were saving, meaning they produced more than they consumed, meaning more resources were available for investing in making the future even better. It's only after WW1 that money has been steadily loosing value, because everyone went of the gold standard (enabling governments to create inflation).

Investing is not a zero sum game. It is about the dividends, which is a part of the wealth created by the companies invested in. I can't see the logic behind your argument that if some are better investors, then someone else must loose money. That is not how it works. If there is a new company, and you are really good, you'll buy shares cheaply at the start. If I'm just a bit good, I'll buy them from you later. You'll get a very good ROI because you were able to see that this company was cheap at the start and you could gain profit even if you didn't sell. I'll make money from the dividends. Everyone is happy. Of course, if I am not good, I'll buy them simply because I think someone else will buy them, even though I don't see how I could profit from holding them myself. Then I or that next bigger fool will loose money.

Now, if nobody cared about the dividends, and everyone invested regardless of the dividends expectations for the future, then you would be correct. But then everyone would be speculators, which is, I admit, more and more the situation we find ourselves in. Speculation is good, when it is based on careful analysis of the marked and identification of errors, not when lots of people are doing it based on feelings.

Re: The US Trader Who Bet $400 Million Against Nintendo Takes Huge Hit As Stock Price Soars

Mortenb

There are good, and bad investors. A good one allocates resources where they will create the most surplus value, the bad where the resources will be wasted (according to what people want to buy, not some imaginary god given standard). Used to be that the good made money, and the bad lost money, thus most investors at any time were relatively good. Nowadays, money is loosing it's value so fast, everyone feels compelled to be investors in order to maybe keep their value, instead of loosing it for sure. This means bad investors outnumber the good ones. This guy might have really analyzed the situation and found Nintendo to be overvalued correctly, but all bad investors still bought the stock because of some relatively minor good news. (I am such a bad investor, as I have no clue what I'm doing, but still buying stocks based on random news here and there). The fact is, based on dividends, Nintendo is massively overvalued (as most stocks are). Only if you for some good reason expect this to change drastically in the future should you invest in Nintendo, in a normal situation. However, since the situation has changed so much with cheap money flowing into the economy (from central banks all over the world), all bets are off.
