City Connection has announced that it will be addressing frame lag issues in its shmup collection Cotton Guardian Force Saturn Tribute with an upcoming update scheduled for "late January or early February 2022".
As noted on the company's website, the question of excessive input lag was acknowledged back in October across the Cotton 'Saturn Tribute' range (comprising Cotton 2, Cotton Boomerang and Guardian Force), and these issues have been specifically addressed:
There have been cases where input delays have occurred in this game due to the following reasons.
(1) Delays due to hardware and engine performance
(2) Delays caused by input devices or monitors
As a result of our verification and response, we have been able to make technical improvements in the area related to the above factor (1).
The website post also mentions a recent 'trial event' where they "were able to let the users experience the improvements" — apparently feedback was positive.
We reviewed the collection back in October, scoring it an 'Average' 5/10 and mentioning the following regarding input delay:
Frame lag is equally high across all three games (which is no real surprise considering how as far as we can tell they’re all Saturn titles plonked into the same generic emulation wrapper) and while not unplayably bad, there is a clear delay between input and action in the one genre you’re most likely to need swift and precise inputs, almost as if presses only register when you let go of a button rather than push down.
It's good, then, to see that City Connection is responding positively to the criticism it received from shmup fans. Some genres can handle a little input lag better than others, but shmups certainly aren't one of them.
Overall, we were impressed with the included games themselves, saying that their quality was "enough to forcefully elevate this package above its mediocre framework". Hopefully these improvements will help bring that framework in line with the gems contained within.

That's great actually. I would have assumed that they'd just leave it like that
That’s good to know, I still wish they could have translated the story mode too.
Nice to see they care. Sega never bothered to fix the input lag from its Genesis Collection
Now release it in the West physically
This is so cool for modders! This game includes a really good Saturn emulator but it had to deal with that delay. Love to see how that will pan out with swapping the files to put other games on it.
@Moroboshi876 It is getting a physical, limited release from Strictly Limited Games. You can order it from their homepage.

@NicolausCamp good grief!😯 Not at that price😆
@NicolausCamp I know. I meant a normal distribution for everyone to get, Cotton Reboot got one even though nobody asked for that game. It's certainly weird that they didn't do the same with this one, considering the franchise had been recently unearthed.
Are we talking the Asian version not the one by Strictly limited?
I loved Cotton Reboot, so I was looking forward to these before they released. But the input lag issues made me decide to pass on them. If they actually make good on this fix, then I will buy them as soon as they are confirmed to be fixed.
@Fake-news there was a regular version available as well, but I can't seem to find it any longer, which is weird as that's the one I ordered.
@Moroboshi876 I for one really enjoyed Cotton Reboot, and I can see how the sales potential for a "new" title is bigger than a pack of emulated rereleases. That's probably ININ's reasoning as well.
@sleepinglion ya that’s the worse input lag I ever encountered. I even emailed sega for that and they replied and told me they are not gonna patch it. Now I don’t buy any game on first day release, wait for at least a week after many reviews come out then decide because nowadays there are many irresponsible developers.
Input delay on Switch is in a lot these types of releases. I’ll say it again: if your game response isn’t on par with Retroarch, you’re below the minimum standard and shouldn’t be charging any money, none, no money, no cheddar for you..
I'll order the physical from Japan if it's fixed
@tka060681 Right on. I messaged them as well, but they did not reply. Kinda sad that their quality control is so poor. I had to re-purchase the Sonic titles when they were made available individually as AGES releases, much better emulation. You're right, there is no reward for being an early adopter of a game. What's really unfortunate is no one at Nintendol Life bothered to warn us in the review about the lag. That was kinda shameful
@sleepinglion me too, I bought most of the Sega ages titles because they are so good. If you compare the sonic titles between the two, the genesis collection version is almost unplayable, the input lag is very bad.
@sleepinglion ya now I remember, most of the reviews for genesis collection was great, what a shame. I want to praise aquiris game studio, the developer of horizon chase turbo, I encountered software error and email them, they replied very soon and followed the problem closely, after we exchange another couple of emails and another three patches, they finally fix the problem, now the game running perfectly with zero problem.
@tka060681 That's awesome to hear, I'm a fan of Horizon Chase! Yeah, reviewers really dropped the ball and I've been less inclined to listen to Nintendo Life since. You'd think even someone who didn't grow up with Sonic on original hardware would have fired up the flagship title, hit jump and noticed Sonic wasn't responding in time. In a title built to go fast, ya gotta kill lag
@NicolausCamp SLG means it may as well have no physical release. I ordered their Cotton Reboot! over a year ago and it's still not shipping. Finally gave up, requested a refund, and got the Inin Games physical release, which hadn't even been announced and just landed suddenly. That one arrived overnight!
I have another order with them for Clockwork Aquario, also over a year old. Hasn't shipped yet. Limited Run Games also takes a while, but they offer updates and are very transparent. SLG is extremely unreliable, and I'd never recommend them to anyone.
@silverthornne I mean, ININ and SLG operate under the same banner, and ININ only release games physically that they think will sell well. Clearly, the didn't think there was enough demand for the Saturn Tribute. I bought the ININ release of Cotton Reboot as well, but in the end, that money will land in the same pocket.
@NicolausCamp I'm aware of that, yet SLG was unable to deliver or to communicate what was going on, when ININ suddenly started selling it in the US. That's why I don't trust SLG. Opaque communication, and at the end of the day, you're more likely to get their offerings cheaper and faster from surprise ININ releases.
They released the patch, can we get some opinions (or scoops) on how that all went down? Doesn't seem like the reduced the lag by much, but maybe enough if you're super casual? I don't know, on the fence about this one, so I need some more info to mull over. 😛
