Metroid Dread was a hugely hyped reveal in Nintendo's E3 2021 presentation and there was lots of excitement, praise and awards buzz around the game following its release on 8th October (alongside the Switch OLED model). How did that convert to sales, though? Well, following a very strong start, the first official numbers are in and they're ok in terms of big first-party releases, but very healthy from a franchise perspective.
Up to 31st December, Metroid Dread sold 2.74 million units, which accounts for nearly three months of sales. While that's not huge when compared to massive multi-million juggernauts like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing, it's a very solid result for a series whose sales numbers don't tend to align with the mindshare it enjoys with Nintendo fans. In Japan, especially, Metroid has never been a big seller.
In the context of the overall Metroid series, it's likely close to becoming the IP's bestseller already; barring a calamitous loss of momentum, according to estimates gathered from Nintendo's own data it's only around 100,000 units shy of overtaking Metroid Prime for that honour. It has already passed the original NES Metroid, which has estimated lifetime sales of 2.73 million copies.
Given the series' modest sales history, it's perhaps unsurprising that Dread hasn't had an outstanding launch in the bigger Nintendo first-party picture. The game wasn't even mentioned in the company's summary when accounting for the year-to-date successes. In the list of Nintendo million sellers it's down in 11th place, edged out of the top 10 by Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield. Of course it's had less time on the market than most games on the list and we'd certainly say its sales figure is positive, but it's not been a runaway smash hit.
And here's a humbling thought, in Q3 alone (1st October to 31st December) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 4.61 million units.
Overall, Metroid Dread has excelled by the standards of its own franchise sales, even if its numbers are still well off what you'd expect of a major new release in franchises like Super Mario, Animal Crossing, The Legend of Zelda and so on.
Let us know what you think of Metroid Dread's initial sales figures in the comments.

Awesome News for Metroid Fans!
Well deserved. It was great game.
Great, hopefully this means the same thing for Metroid as it did with Fire Emblem when Awakening was launched and we'll see more Metroid games in the future.
I can't think of a better way to celebrate the occasion than having the Prime series remastered on the Switch.
Metroid series sales:
> Metroid NES: 2.73 million
> Metroid II: 1.72 million
> Super: 1.42 million
> Fusion: 1.60 million
> Prime: 2.84 million
> Zero Mission: <1 million
> Prime 2: 1.10 million
> Prime Hunters: 1.08 million
> Prime 3: 1.41 million
> Prime Trilogy: <1 million
> Other M: <1 million
> Federation Force: lol
> Samus Returns: <1 million
> Dread: 2.74 million
I played Dread eight times through before the end of last year. You know what that means? Yeah, time to play it again soon.
By the end of February, metroid dread will have reached the 3 million mark.
"Metroid Dread has excelled by the standards of its own franchise sales"
And that's awesome! I'm not a specialist but considering the sales history of the franchise, I think that's really really great news for us fans!
Really, at this point, what Nintendo series that has an entry on Switch DOESN'T have its best selling game on the Switch (or about to)? Just tells me that they should bring back more series to strengthen their IPs further.
@Yosher
Switch has:
Best selling 3D Zelda
2nd best selling 2D Zelda
Best selling 3D Mario
Best selling Mario Kart
Best selling Mario Party
2nd best selling Pokémon
Best selling Animal Crossing
Best selling Smash Bros
Best selling Luigi’s Mansion
2nd best selling Metroid (best selling 2D Metroid)
2nd best selling Paper Mario
2nd best selling Fire Emblem
2nd best selling Kirby
Best selling Pikmin
Best selling Mario Golf
Best selling Mario Tennis
In 90 days at that.
This game will do much more over the coming years
Did anyone normalise it to account for the user base?
I think the Switch has already sold 5x the GameCube, so a far smaller portion of the user base picked up Dread…
i so happy that Metroid Dread might become the best selling game of the franchise.
Well deserved. It's a amazing game.
@Yosher honestly I would love to see them release a Golden Sun, FZero, Mario and Luigi RPG, and 3D Donkey Kong
I predict that Metroid Prime 4 will sell around the 4m mark
Making it the best selling ever!
I need to finish this game.
its still a shame they couldn't get Prime 4 out yet, as it might just be the perfect time right now. If it arrives too late in the Switch's lifecycle, people might just have moved on already, like the last yer of the Wii.
Nevertheless amazing achievement for a 2D Metroid. ESPECIALLY considering that there are some Metroidvanias out there that at least at their time really were at least on the same level of greatness as the Metroid series (like Hollow Knight)
RGT 85 is sweating.
Well Deserved, this game is amazing! Keep it up, Dread!
@Monkeyboy Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the best selling Fire Emblem. It topped 3 million in 2020.
While it will probably become the best selling Metroid game, given how great it was I'm actually a bit disappointed by numbers.
Was my best game of 2021. in general.
Metroid Dread would sell more if it were cheaper. Sold at 59 dollars... managed to sell this amount for 103 million switches sold. It is not much. I believe if it were sold at 39 dollars (which is the amount I think this game deserves, or less), it would sell a lot more.
Metroid Prime: 2,84 million - 12,9% fan base
Game Cube: 22 million
Metroid Dread: 2,74 million - 2,66% fan base
Nintendo Switch: 103 million
Not this strong...
I did my part and have a copy. My boys were obsessed with this game while I was playing it for a few weeks. They'll get to play it when their reflexes are better.
@westman98 Federation Force only sold 101 copies? That's not very many copies at all.
That's cool! Dread is one of my favorites in the series, so it absolutely deserves it.
@Dr_Corndog my son is happy to play through it repeatedly, absolutely loves it
I think Nintendo have covered the cost of the game. I love Metroid however it does not have the same appeal as its other 1st party games. For example, it it does not have the same cross-gender appeal as Mario, Zelda and Animal Crossing.
It is also the definition of a hard-core game as it is challenging. For the type of game it is, (2D action/adventure), that those sales numbers are pretty decent.
I have never played a 2D metroid before. How does it compare with Megaman X series? I loved those games
@Rykdrew
You expected Metroid Dread to sell 12+ million copies?
@westman98 I actually did a laugh out loud when I got down to federation force.
Good stuff. If Fire Emblem can stay in production around those numbers, so can Metroid.
People should stop using attach ratio to judge success, especially for games on a monstrously successful platform like Switch. Metroid will sell better on Switch than ever before, but it is still very much a niche game.
@westman98 Thanks for all the numbers, I'm surprised Prime didn't sell better, I feel like it's come out on every system since it released, along w/ RE4 and Okami, but I guess there was only that 1 trilogy. Kind of puts in perspective all the people on here clamoring all the time for Prime HD Trilogy if Prime Trilogy sold less than 1mil, Nintendo's time and money are probably better spent elsewhere. I do think Prime 4 could do well if they take advantage of the hardware and it isn't Other M, but when you have a 120m install base (it will by then) 5m shouldn't be that hard for a space themed FP scf-fi shooter. Guess will be waiting awhile for FF2 huh?😉
@Pikman Yes but also don't forget, with GameCube there was barely any other games available. Game releases (on Cube) could be counted on one hand and it was Metroids first launch into 3D. So picking it up was a no brainer, as we were always itching for something new to play (and it was definitely a great game).
On the otherhand, on Switch, there is much more games to choose from and so from that perspective, Dread, actually did very well considering the plethora of other available games and releases.
The sales numbers listed, are lifetime sales, Dread is just based on 3 months. Metroid Prime was full on 3D, while Dread wasn't and unfortunately many people lately dismiss 2D games.
The true test, will be Prime 4.
@kurtasbestos he 'lolled' not 101'd 🙄
@westman98 no, but at 39 dollars, it would make more people who have never played Metroid, have the guts to buy and give it a try. The numbers should be greater than these. I didn't buy it myself because of the price. I borrowed it, played it for 9 hours and returned it. And I don't think I will play again. At 39 dollars I would have given money to Nintendo.
Mission Complete. See you next mission, Samus Aran.
For those saying that it’s not at all representative of the Switch population, keep in mind half of the people that buy a Switch use it as a Mario Kart and Smash machine. So, this is in no way representative of the entire population. This will outsell a lot of Nintendo giants in the future and I can see it hitting 10 million due to the absolute legs Nintendo games have.
Disappointing results from Metroid dread when compared to Pokémon brilliant diamond or Luigi mansion, especially since Metroid dread had big marketing behind it, game of the year nominations, and word of mouth on social media. Hopefully Nintendo does not reflect on the sales of this game struggling to reach 3 million to 100 million player install base and with the switch effect too. If prime 4 does not cross the 3 million mark in the first 3 months, this franchise may go the way of F-zero.
Metroid Dread is a terrible game.. Not sure why people like it so but it does not have the feel Super metroid or fusion.. This game bombed for me played it for 24 hours and got my money back the only thing i kept was the Amiibos which are cool and the collection book and cards i got
@Zeldawakening couldn't agree more can't understand all these puff articles today treating this like it was some sort of triumph. Yes it is not a failure (which is good for the series) but equally it's not some amazing return to form. Look at Prime, every time the Gamecube is mentioned Prime is as well, above even the Mario and Zelda releases on the platform. Dread is barely in the conversation now let alone in a decade. Prime is still thought as one of the best action /adventure games to this day and Dread isn't even the best Metroidvania out now.
This is not to say it's a bad game, it's not. But it's nothing special, it's a perfunctory performance in a series that sadly underperforms. Metroid is my favourite franchise but Dread has done nothing to convince me of it's long term future. All hope still rests on Prime.
@IronMan30
Lol yes he is.
Balan Wonderworld is bearing down on him like a Lion fixing to strike an Impala.
Jeez some people trying to take this as doom and gloom...its going to be the best selling game in the franchise, Metroid's future is looking good people.
Just like art-house movies, Metroid is a passion project I think and while it doesn't match the crazy sales of the others, Nintendo knows the series is beloved. I agree with some others though, if they popped out an F-Zero, they have this plus 100m fanbase now that would mean any game was a success surely. Use this chance to resurrect some old IPs etc!
@rjejr I think one of the reasons the Trilogy sold so poorly was because it was a limited release. Granted, it may have not sold well if it were more widely distributed, but I recall only ever being able to find it at a GameStop after it was already discontinued in 2010 for like $80.
It seems Nintendo didn’t really want it to succeed.
Well deserved. One of my favorites of the gen and the series.
@RubyDevilNine But when she did talk, she spoke Chozo
That's good to hear and a hopeful relief that we may get Metroid 6 sooner.
I'll get around to playing my copy...one of these days.
@westman98 What about Prime Pinball?
Absolutely loved this game and the brutal final boss, and I’d never completed a 2d Metroid before (not counting Other M). Such a slick, well-made game.
Incredible game, and yes, great sales success in the context of the series. That said, I agree that it's also disappointing to continue to see Metroid underperform in comparison to Nintendo's other big franchises. Which has always saddened me considering I feel that Metroid is Nintendo's best IP in terms of game quality. With Other M being the only real low point in over 30 years.
Psst: Nintendo arms the joy-cons with Samus' Omega Blaster Cannon.
Instantly makes the Jedi lightsaber toys shrivel.
@Yosher Pokemon's I think the biggest outlier in that regard.
Sword/Shield are apparently in second place for the series, but they're still well-behind Red/Green/Blue/Yellow's combined 47 million listed on Wiki's list of best-selling video games, and still a ways behind the 31 million attributed just to Red/Green/Blue.
@Rykdrew I want to give an idea how little sense your comment makes.
62% of the Wii U owners bought Mario Kart 8.
41% of the Switch owners bought Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. MK8D sales are despite that way more impressive, because contrary to what you thought game sales do never scale linearly with the hardware installbase. Metroid Dread sold just barely below Metroid Prime's lifetime sales in less than 3 months. That's impressive, no matter the context.
I hope this leads to a revival of the series like we saw with Fire Emblem after Awakening.
@Zeldawakening Bad take. Dread will soon outsell Prime 1 to become the best selling Metroid. That is the number Nintendo cares about. Fire Emblem Awakening sold just over 2 million, but it was the best selling game in the franchise at the time and led Nintendo to focus more on the franchise.
I knew this was going to be the best selling game in the series.
The switch has just been paving the way to a lot of franchises success.
@NerdyBoutKirby
Pinball sold worse than Federation Force.
@Zeldawakening What? You can't possibly be serious with that statement.
For starters you're comparing a more niche series to the literally highest grossing ip of all time along with a well established Mario Series spinoff.
Secondly, Dread is setting sales records for the entire series despite only being a few months old, if anything this will give Nintendo an incentive to keep supporting the series now that they see that theres a demand for it.
@Arpie Your comment is equally as ignorant as the person I just responded to.
At least we agree on that.
How is it not? It was one of the most critically acclaimed games last year being nominated for multiple awards and highly rated among fans. If anything you're just arguing based on your personal opinion and nothing else.
Not only is this purely anecdotal it's completely unrelated to anything in this thread, let alone your post.
Now it sounds like you're living under a rock. Where were you last year? Actually where are you now since clearly Dread is still in the conversation looking at this article lol.
Whats with you and establishing your opinions and anecdotal experiences as facts?
Ignoring that Dread as I mentioned was still critically acclaimed and being called one of the best metroidvanias out there so idk what you mean. People were even calling it their favorite game in the series.
This just screams "I don't like this game therefore it's nothing special and it's a step in the wrong direction".
It's fine if you don't like the game but claiming it isn't doing anything special for the franchise is objectively wrong since it's literally setting sales records for the franchise in just a few months. I don't get how it's about to become the best selling metroid game and you say all this.
Despite loving Metroid over the years, I got busy in 2021 and never got around to buying Dread (or Skyward Sword, or Ring Fit Adventure).
Pokemon Legends Arceus hype propelled me to splurge on both titles at once, and I am happy to be sitting on my own copy of Dread to play as soon as I am through with Legends.
Awesome to hear. Dread will definitely become the series top seller when the next financial report releases. Excellent game too, hopefully more to come from Mercury Steam.
Doing my 3rd playthrough on hard... I just can't get over how fun the gameplay is.
I bought it after Christmas and started playing recently. Just finished the 2nd boss. It is good, but I agree with many of the reviewers. It does feel more linear (at least in the beginning). I am looking forward to playing more!
I did really like the 3DS one, but it must have had lower sales since the Switch was already out.
"And here's a humbling thought, in Q3 alone (1st October to 31st December) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 4.61 million units."
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was "free" with the OG Switch during this time, so not really humbling if Nintendo counted those Mario Kart 8 Deluxe copies as sales.
@CoffeeWithGames people buy MK8D to this day in droves at full price so ironically the periods of it being “free” by buying an entire Switch would have minimal to no impact to the big picture.
@BTB20 You are not wrong. What I mean is that, apparently, Metroid Dread didn't convert new players to "enter" the franchise. The franchise apparently hasn't "grown" as it could have. And I think this may have been because of the $59 price tag. I hope Metroid Dread sells more than 1 2 Switch!
@Arawn93 I'm sure they have that data, but the fact is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was included with the OG Switch during this time, so it's not really comparable imo, unless they are showing the sales breakdown here?
Look those are actually good sales numbers. Not every game is a 3D Mario or Zelda. Although I didn’t think it was worth 60 dollars from what I played, it is still a great game.
@westman98 "Federation Force: lol" dude, this made my day thanks so much! HAHAHAHA
Honestly I was expecting a bit more units to sell. By how previous tittles sold, it's like Metroid will never reach the 3 million mark. Hopefully that changes this year.
@Yosher couldn't agree more.
@Rykdrew @Pikman
This is assuming that the user base grew relative to console numbers which is not necessarily the case. Likely the user base may have doubled or more, but it has not quintupled, so sales based on the fans’ parts are not that much weaker than Prime. It may also have something to do with MercurySteam haters and/or 2d game for the AAA price tag like Rykdrew said. In theory it’s a lot easier for consumers to justify buying Prime.
I've got Metroid Dread as my 4th favorite in the Metroid Series behind Metroid Prime Hunters, Metroid Prime: Federation Force and Super Metroid, and just above Metroid: Other M. I'm glad that the game is performing well commercially relative to the series, and do want Metroid Prime dethroned. Dread is likely going to share the go to traditional Metroid experience role with Super Metroid for me going forward.
@Rykdrew This is just the first quarter. While I don't expect it to have massive legs, it will certainly sell over 3 million copies, possibly 4 million. Metroid Prime 4 can then pick up from this and sell over 5 million.
Just my thoughts.
@Zeldawakening Metroid is a niche franchise from a niche genre. Most people just aren't interested in this. You might as well declare everything that sells less than Pokemon a failure.
@abduz DUH it was a joke! But I suppose it is also slightly believable.
@kurtasbestos Haha my apologies! ...but yes sounded believable and online nothing surprises me anymore.
I am SO happy! Looks like Nintendo won't banish Metroid to the empty abyss they sent F-ZERO and Star Fox to, after all!
This should help continue the series now that they sold this Game. I want to make a trip to the Nintendo store in New York but only when Metroid Prime 4 is released unfortunately time table I don’t think it gets released on this switch but on the next system which I believe will be the switch pro.
Great to hear that it is doing this good.
@iLikeUrAttitude @Ade117 @BTB20 Splatoon 1 on the wii u sold more than Metroid Dread ... not a good sign for the metroid franchise when a new ip (splatoon 1) on a less than 20 million user base outsells an established ip (metroid dread) on a 100 million user base. Looks like it will all come down to Metroid Prime 4 to save the series from Fzero obscurity.
@Zeldawakening Buddy, you're just comparing other more successful ips to Dread and calling it a failure because of it.
Thats basically saying every other ip that isn't Pokemon, Mario, Animal crossing is a failure beucase those franchise outsold most of the industry which is a flawed and laughable argument.
Metroid Dread is objectively a success considering its about to become the best selling game in its franchise in only a few months whereas the other entries it took years.
Also like @BTB20 said game sales never scale linearly with the hardware installbase, otherwise only a few games in the whole console library would be deemed a success.
From his words also:
The ratio of installbase to game sales may look impressive but MK8dx sales are still way more impressive cause it sold that much more (it's the best selling mario kart game now).
Let's look at the PS4 too which has an install base of 116 million. It's best selling game is God of War which sold less than 20 million out of its massive install base. By your logic this is also a failure, along with every other game on the system because it didn't live up to your expectations.
So to reiterate game sales never scale with the hardware installbase and you have no idea what you're talking about.
@iLikeUrAttitude I never discussed ratio of install-base size as the end all, but rather compared game sales on differing platform sizes. I agree with you that God of War was not a failure because it sold 20 million units. I think you are too tied to the fact that it is the highest performing in the franchise, because barely being the highest in a franchise that sells poorly is not good. Metroid dread sold less than 3 million copies despite critic awards and a heavy marketing push, but the buzz is fading now. It sold so few that we may not hear sales numbers again for this game in an era when Splatoon 1 on Wii U and Luigi's Mansion outsell it. For a franchise as old as Metroid and on a large switch install base, it is not a good sign that the game sales barely affect Nintendo's bottom line.
@Zeldawakening Splatoon is a shooter. That is a way more popular genre than Metroidvania. Metroid Dread is just short of becoming the best selling game in it's genre. That makes it a big success.
@Zeldawakening Metroid Dread just released. You compare the sales in the first few months of Dread against many years of sales from games in genres and franchises that are way more appealing to the general public. Unless Metroid Dread has terrible legs it can definitely outsell the 3.3 million copies that Luigi's Mansion sold. Franchise age has nothing to do with it.
Yes you did, multiple times in fact:

Well this is also bad because you only care about pure numbers without taking anything into context.
Taking account the context of the series, genre etc. is the most logical way to go about this when discussing sales.
Also you said it yourself, Metroid never sold that good - it's a niche series in a niche genre, but the fact that it sold that well in short a short amount of time objectively speaking makes it a success. You need to take into account more than just raw numbers, thats why everything responding to you is saying otherwise, because in the context of the series, Dread outsold it's best selling games in just mere months. Furthermore it's also a niche genre so you're expecting too much sales wise, especially by comparing it to much bigger, marketable and more accessible ips like you did with splatoon and pokemon.
That would be the equivalent of calling Xenoblade 2's sales a failure because it only sold 2 million, despite it being the best selling entry in it's respective series (which is also niche).
Refer to my previous posts about what I said about comparing other series to Metroid.
It is very much a good sign for the series because of what everyone including me has been telling you for the past few replies to your comments. Dread is an objective success looking at it's sales, and this tells Nintendo there is a demand for the series so it gives them more of an incentive to support it with more games.
@Zeldawakening Metroidvanias are more niche than shooters. Hollow Knight also sold similar numbers. I saw a figure of 2.8 million as of February 2019. Probably a little more now, but these games aren't sales juggernauts. Nintendo is pleased with these numbers just like they are for Fire Emblem selling 3 million. Not every franchise needs to sell 10+ million to be a success.
@iLikeUrAttitude I guess it really does just depend on how you define "context" as you were saying. If you believe context should be only a comparison to other games in the poorly selling series, then I see your perspective since it is an upward trend. I guess I just fall in the camp that "context" means sales compared to other Nintendo games, as splatoon on wii u or luigi's mansion outsold this established Metroid ip, in which case Metroid Dread may not be so "objectively" a success. Since we are unlikely to get an update on sales figures for Metroid dread when it sold less than 3 million, only time will tell how Nintendo (not us) will look at it when they go to assess what new games should be made.
@Zeldawakening
Congrats you missed the point entirely despite it being spelled out for you multiple times.
Ah yes comparing some of the biggest ips and more popular genres to niche ones, makes perfect sense.
Yeah "sold less than 3 million" when its only been 3 months lmao.
And I'm 100% sure Nintendo will look at it as a huge success considering they can look at the numbers themselves, along with anyone that has a shred of common sense.
@westman98 Just so you’re aware, the Switch has the best selling Fire Emblem game which is Three Houses. It’s surpassed 3m copies, Awakening has only done 2m.
@JissuWolfe
Right, I never said otherwise.
@westman98 responding to the wrong guy, sorry
Is this including digital sales?
