Shin Megami Tensei V was only treated to its first update last week, but seven days later, here we are with a second patch that adds some new settings and fixes minor issues.
The new update takes the game to Version 1.02 and mostly centres around new camera and display options. The full patch notes can be found below, with thanks to Nintendo Everything for the translation:
Shin Megami Tensei V Update Ver.1.02
- Adds Optional features:
- Option to adjust the field of view during exploration: 11 levels (MIN: default, MEDIUM, MAX, and more)
- Option to adjust screen brightness: 11 levels (MIN, MEDIUM: default, MAX, and more)
- You can adjust the brightness to suit your playing environment as well as your own preferences. Please note that the screen may become too bright in certain areas, or when using certain skills, with the MAX setting.
- Reduces the number of gimmicks for successive jumps after the leyline in Demon King’s Castle: 3rd Stratum
- Other minor fixes
You can get a good look at those new display options in the screenshots below. First up, here's how the new field of view options look (Min, Intermediate, Max going left to right):
And now the brightness options (Min, Intermediate, Max going left to right):

Medium seems to be the most ideal option on both Field of view and brightness for me. Happy to see they added these options.
Wish this update had have come out a few days ago before I did the 3rd Stratum myself. Was the worst part of the whole game by far.
I'm on the final dungeon now and I'll probably be finished with the game by the end of the night. Been really fun.
Beat the Demon Kings Castle yesterday, maybe I should have waited one day lol
FOV option is very welcome. This is honestly one of the only things I've been unhappy about thus far.
More games (on switch) should have this option so it’s nice that they added this one.
Looking forward to playing this
I have only just reached castle 3rd floor so thats good timing
FOV options? In a Switch third person game??? Thank god! Way more games need to have FOV options.
3rd stratum was annoying. I had to watch a YouTube video to get past it. Great game although the environments and buildings are too samey so graphics really lack variety. That said I’ve lost 100 hours to this game so I’m obviously enjoying it
"Reduces the number of gimmicks for successive jumps after the leyline in Demon King’s Castle: 3rd Stratum"
I just did that part a couple of hours ago and those jump mechanics were really annoying 😂
Field of view is good, especially for hunting down those Miman. I think the game is bloody excellent so far.
Oh HELL yeah FOV options. This game has felt almost claustrophobic to me at times.
Haven’t gotten to the part getting patched, but options for the brightness and camera are a nice bonus.
I would have loved a real-time camera zoom like Xenoblade series, a photo mode (although the game is technically wanting the art direction is gorgeous), more granularity with the camera speed (default is a bit too slow and the next one up is a bit too fast for me).
This is a top 5 all-time (or at least “modern”) JRPG for me and I highly recommend to anyone interested in the genre.
I enjoy the game but ...something feels off ...idk what yet ...I think I had been enjoying the remaster of Nocture more than 5 ...well, maybe with a better framerate it would be a better experience, hopefully the game releases on PC too
@BlackenedHalo Hopefully it’s the camera FOV;)
I haven’t played Nocturne since it’s PS2 release — will probably play that next. SMTV almost feels like Strange Journey by way of Xenoblade/Breath of the Wild. Strong emphasis on exploration and exploits. I think it’s a lot easier by default as well, especially for series vets.
This might be my favorite in the series. I hope it clicks for you.
@BlackenedHalo I love this game but I am missing the tension in Nocturne. I also liked that they explored different ideologies in that game which in my opinion makes the main plot better and more engaging. Other than that everything else is great for me at least.
@Spiders the exploration is great in SMT 5, the level design of the world is really interesting, almost on par with Xenoblade Chronicles 2's
I am just not sure about the whole Megatsuhi thing and mainly the essence.
There are tons of Megatsuhi around the world, so it is very easy to gather it and fight enemies and bosses with immediate Critical hits from the beginning. I swear I battled so many battles in a row during which enemies did not even attack me due to the Megatsuhi system.
The essence system literally breaks the game as if it makes attributes frankly pointless. You are fighting a boss for the first time, you find his weakness, his attacks and you probably die in process. Then you use an essence to make you resistant to his attack and to make him vulnerable to your attacks. And fight him again, spam the most useful spell and that is it. That was different in Nocturne. You just could not change your attributes as easily, or actually not at all.
The press turn battle system in SMT games was always problematic because it was just enough to find a weakness and spam the correct spell. Of course, only if you had the correct spell or ability, which you often had not. However SMT 5 allows you to customize your character in so many ways and with absolutely no restrictions that it even breaks the whole system as you can be immunite to basically everything in a second if you want.
Hmm... Not out in europe yet it seems.
@Conangiga nope
@Octane_st1m i miss some restrictions, SMT 5 has its role playing system way too open so you can break the game easily
@BlackenedHalo
I'm actually on the other side of the fence with this one.
Having played 3 and 4, among other spin-offs with Press Turn (Digital Devil Saga and Devil Survivor games), I found 5's minor tweaks to the system to be far more beneficial than detrimental. The fact that about 98% of the compendium now has an actual weakness makes the game a fair bit more balanced versus the older games, where typically about half way through the game you'd start running into bosses especially that had no weaknesses. In those cases, you'd end up resorting to the same dull tactics: buffs and critical attacks in the hopes of getting more of those sweet icons.
While it does feel that 5 made the game "easier", I found it to have a fair amount of challenge throughout, only dropping off towards the end of the game where you could start overpowering enemies and bosses alike by completing quests and gaining enough bonus EXP to level up to the point that you could curb stomp the fights.
This was my experience from playing on Normal, mind you. I'd like to give it a try on Hard to see how it plays.
I'm still trying to get to Tokyo Tower. I met a Mermaid who offered a Quest...How far am I in the game?
@Browny well I agree, if the bosses have no weaknesses, then it is the old school SMT game but if they have, then it is just all about what I wrote above....
what i dislike about SMT 5 are its bulletsponge bosses ...if a boss has various skills and spells, then it can be intestesting, but if he just spams two skills again and again, then it is too boring
..I never said that bosses with weaknesses are bad, but if you can adjust your character in a second to match his strong spells, then it has no point in my opinion. In SMT5 you have loads of various essences everywhere so it is not about lacking an essence if you need it.
I think that bosses' enormous amount of HP serves as a balance to your ability to adjust your character quite easily without any restrictions. And i do not like it at all.
@Bizzyb almost at the end
@BlackenedHalo
Did you feel the bosses were spongey? I actually didn't feel that way after the first couple bosses, where it felt like my damage output was inherently lower due to restricted skills. But once you start getting a hold of the good old buffs and de-buffs, even the spongiest boss went down in four or five (admittedly) high tension turns, where a well landed weakness or critical on my side of the field could throw the entire battle into chaos.
As for the Magatsuhi, I confess I only used it a handful of times at the start of the game, before ultimately stopping when I got the miracle that gave my party a minor heal per turn, which honestly made a far greater difference in battle longevity when those handful of MP per turn added up to one more Media or Dia spell. Granted, I did notice that a number of the race skills were especially powerful, but because of the revolving door nature of the party, I could never really count on those as part of my strategy.
@Browny five turns? are you kiddin me? maybe if you are 10 levels above the level of the boss
@BlackenedHalo
Honest truth, most of my boss fights beginning with the second area of the game were that short. And I was almost always at the boss's level, or one or two levels below. I actually didn't start out-leveling the bosses until the endgame.
Always found the trick to winning the fights was to strategically arrange the party to make sure I got 8 turn icons per round, using buffs and de-buffs as needed, and having a couple demons benched and ready to fill in should I lose one (which often happened because the bosses always hit me like a ton of bricks). Keep in mind this was on Normal difficulty, not Hard.
@Browny well, but you would have never had 8 turn icons per round, hadnt you had the ability to adjust your attributes so easily, would you?
@BlackenedHalo It is a very exploitable system, which also reminds me of the Xenoblade series. I‘ve barely used Essences unless MC is vulnerable to a boss and upgrading the Proto-fiend abilities.
I was thinking about your comment and I think I’ve landed on something: SMTV is the least oppressive title of the main series (I-V, plus Strange Journey). Just listening to the SMTIV soundtrack this morning and I feel haunted by moments in that game.
Different flavors and maybe this is meant to be more accessible to newbies and Persona people. I’m loving it but totally see your issues from a veteran perspective. Maybe Maniax mode in the future?
@BlackenedHalo
How is altering the Nahobino's skillset any different from changing your demon layout through recruitment and fusion, however?
I agree that the ease of getting new skills or attributes for the Nahobino allows you to dodge getting slapped hard with weaknesses when it comes to bosses, but at the same time it doesn't make the Nahobino any less squishy compared to any other demon in the party. Heck, I'd argue the true biggest change is the ability to move the Nahobino from slot 1 in the party, something I don't think was possible in any other SMT game. Meaning then that if you didn't spend the time to learn the appropriate skill or resistance, the main character would be the biggest hindrance to your strategy.
Game says I'm playing the latest version (1.01) and won't update, is someone else experiencing the same thing? (I'm in Italy)
This is my first SMT game, and I am really enjoying it a lot. I'm really excited about the FOV option, as that has been my only complaint so far.
Update is available on JP atm it seems. Still waiting.( US )
Still 1.01 in UK
@Browny i agree with you. If you take your time and prioritise filling out demon compendium just through catching and fusing whilst saving macca the game is not hard, you also get lots of items to level up faster and boost attributes too. 60 hours in and i have every demon for my level (53) and 200,000 macca
ehhh....now I have to go and look again.
@luckiernut eheheh what 200K macca where you get that much from? I know I only got mine going that high trying to kill imach characters only. Otherwise when I first start it was not fun trying to make macca.
@wanghosom yup, still nothing in Slovakia
@Browny Ok I think I understand what you were trying to prove!
@SwitchForce just exploring, going back to easy areas to catch demons for fusing, not summoning through compendium, always having the fairy around for items, bargaining with demons for better prices etc there are some miracles that reduce prices also so having those early as possible helps
@luckiernut great I have to do other grinding for more stuffs... lol
I'm literally at the point in the game where the dungeon mentioned in this update is the next area. I'll hold off playing for now until the update is available (seems only available in Japan atm)
I've been pretty much rocking the same 3 demons the entire game. I've "evolved" them through fusion once or twice though. My team consist of a:
I've dumped so many incense and sutras and essences into these three (they're all lvl 80 now) that it's hard to just swap them out. I have other 'mon in stock but I almost never need to summon them and they aren't very strong.
And now I've got a skill that lets me re-summon a demon that's been killed at full HP so it's usually just as well to re-summon them than to summon another demon. They have elemental weaknesses (except the Principality angel cause I fused his dark weakness out with a Null Dark) but it's rare that I need more than my 3 elemental block items to finish an enemy. It's most important to use them on the enemy Megatsuhi turns.
I know it's cliche at this point but I'm amazed at how much more intentional I am about grooming my demons than I am about my Pokémon. There's just so much more I can do with them.
Does the FOV tank performance?
Tried a few hours ago & no new update was available for me. I have 1.01 now.
Anybody else not getting this game to update, Im still stuck on 1.01
@FaroreAbhorsen if this method works then that's great but with some miracles constantly fusing demons makes them way more powerful. You can always save a snapshot of a demon by registering it and summon it at a higher level so you don't lose anything by fusing
I booted the game up this morning, and there was an update waiting - pretty sure it was 1.02.
Really enjoying the game, although playing on hard was almost a mistake... It's exceptionally hard. Died and lost progress many times now. Just a bit further than Tokyo Tower, about level 16...
So it's 11:04pm Pacific. I've waited for the patch to be pushed to my Switch and its copy of SMTV all day. Still hasn't shown up yet. Smash Bros Ultimate got it's final patch though. SMTV still loads and plays fine so I'll continue to wait. Out!
Always nice to have options. I’m really enjoying this so far, been challenging and fun as heck, especially in handheld mode.
@Cathousemaster You’re a bold person! It’s definitely the easiest default MegaTen game — I think you can get a lot out of a Hard play through if you stick with it. I rarely use all the tools I have on default.
Still no update. Maybe because of different publishers
@luckiernut Different territory requires different approval process perhaps
... People were having such struggles with the wind puzzles the Devs actually nerfed it? What was the struggle exactly? I don't remember encountering anything that made me pause and think for more than like, a couple minutes. Yikes, gamers
Where is this fabled update?
It's not out in NA. Been checking every day, still on 1.01.
@luckiernut yeah I saw a video of using fusion to make OP demons. I was impressed but I maxed out potential with sutras and have been reluctant to lose those. I read that in New Game + you can get a miracle that let's you replace the initial skills on a fusion. With such a miracle I'd definitely be more willing to fuse but right now every skill I put on my demons is very intentional (-barion lvl and heavy or severe physical) I don't want to lose 3 of them for some basic ability.
Maybe I'll build a different team if I New Game+.
@BeefSanta I don't think the puzzles are super hard but they are tedious without need and a little visually confusing. I guess the patch isn't out in the US or something but I can't wait to go back to the castle to see how they changed it.
So when does this update actually go live? As of late last night, it still wasn't available on my end.
Still on my 1st playthrough so I'm excited for more QoA updates before my subsequent re-plays.
Still not live though.
still nothiiiiiing
Anybody get the patch yet? Still no luck here.
Still nothing in NA.
It's been 6 days. I wonder what the holdup is.
@Sagator It’s available now. Downloading as I type!
@BlackenedHalo @Octane_st1m It’s up for download. Did it manually from plus menu.
