It’s always difficult to know just how much of a game to change when you’re remaking it, and that is certainly true when it comes to the insanely-popular Pokémon series. Go too far, and you risk alienating the audience, as was evident with the enjoyable but somewhat simplified Let’s Go! Pikachu and Eevee Switch remakes of the original Pokémon Red and Blue. If you manage to combine the elements that have advanced the formula in the years since, though, you can create some of the very best games in the franchise, as was the case with HeartGold and SoulSilver on DS. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl fall somewhere in the middle; a pair of titles that offers a great opportunity to pick up some of the Sinnoh Dex that is missing from the current mainline Sword and Shield games, but ultimately an adventure you probably won’t return to once you're done.
There’s a strange feeling of obligation to these remakes. Generation 1, 2 and 3 have all received stellar reimaginings, and Generation 4 felt like the odd one out. However, instead of a Game Freak-helmed remake and love letter to the generation, ILCA, the studio handling Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, has changed the art style for the worse and failed to include many elements from the generation’s best game, Pokémon Platinum.
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl feature a 3D 'Chibi' art style for their overworld, making all characters look like emotionless Funko Pops, and it was a real mistake. While battles have arguably never looked better – with some incredible arenas and backgrounds for your Pokemon to compete in – the overworld looks cheap in comparison. It also robs some NPCs – who were intimidating and serious in the original 2D games – of their tone completely. Why should we take this big antagonist seriously when he looks just as (un)threatening as any other trainer?
Every character you battle has a full-sized model resembling the style adopted in Sword and Shield, and they uniformly look so much better than the Chibi, toy-like models that cover the overworld. This really makes us wish that they’d retained the overworld scale of the previous Nintendo Switch games, rather than attempt to transport the squat 2D sprites of the original game into a full-3D world.
While the art style underwhelms, the music, however, is excellent. The Sinnoh games were home to some of the best themes in Pokémon history, and they’ve been lovingly remastered here. There’s a great atmosphere to the entire region, you really get the sense that it’s a lived-in environment built around the imposing Mt. Coronet. In a smart move, during battles in the wild, you’ll often see the shadow of Coronet looming in the background, making the battles feel much more like they're playing out in the world, rather than in some cordoned-off area.
The core of the game is the same as it was 15 years ago. You’re travelling from town to town collecting badges and trying to foil a plot to harness a Legendary Pokemon. If you’re tired of that formula, these games will do nothing to sway you. Some smart quality of life changes include the new HM system, which means that Surf, Fly and other moves that were relegated to the lone Bidoof in your party are now handled by… a Bidoof – but this time it’ll just appear when you need it, and no longer take up a party slot.
In a really disappointing step back for the franchise, Pokémon no longer spawn in the overworld in the wild — instead, it’s back to random battles in the grass when you’re walking the roads of Sinnoh. We had really hoped we’d gotten away from this antiquated system for good, but unfortunately not.
Where Pokemon do spawn in the overworld, however, is in the all-new 'Grand Underground'. The Grand Underground is a reimagining of the same system from the original games, wherein players could explore, mine for shards, and meet other players. In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, it’s been renovated with new biomes, which contain roaming wild Pokemon. This not only fixes a big problem in Generation 4 — the lack of Fire-type Pokemon — it also manages to include some of the Platinum Dex that has been omitted from the main game.
There’s a slight issue, however: the levelling system feels somewhat exploitable. As soon as we gained access to The Grand Underground, we began exploring its various biomes and came across two rare Pokémon – well, 'rare' when you consider how early we were in the game: Absol and Houndoom. These two powerful 'mon were both just sitting there, seven levels higher than the rest of our team. We managed to catch them and, for the next few gyms, we had completely broken the level curve.
Throw in the permanent, non-removable EXP share and your team will be absolutely stacked for the whole game. However, that issue aside, the ability to revisit The Grand Underground and hunt for new Pokémon is very enjoyable – especially since they’re visible before battling, avoiding the incredible annoyance of the random battles elsewhere in Sinnoh.
The game runs well in both docked and undocked modes and looks very sharp on the shiny new Nintendo Switch OLED Model. It’s not pushing the limits of graphical fidelity by any means, but all the Pokémon models look nice – even if their static animations are pretty lifeless. Moves are nicely animated, and plenty of Pokémon have their own unique animated signature attack. The frame-rate issues that plagued Sword and Shield and the later DS titles are thankfully absent, making battling a smooth experience. The top-down perspective also mitigates the pop-in issues of recent titles, as the area which the player can see is generally only a few feet in any direction.
These are not bad Pokémon games by any means — they’re still perfectly enjoyable — but having sampled all of the Pokémon remakes, these are the ones that feel the most stuck in the past. When HeartGold and SoulSilver came out, they became the definitive DS titles, and arguably the finest games in the series. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl don’t feel like they’ll make anywhere near that level of impact. We also can’t emphasize enough how much of a downgrade the Chibi art style is from the pixel art of the originals. Not only does it make the games feeler cheaper, it ruins the design of the game’s main antagonist.
Conclusion
While some of the slower elements of the original games have been fixed, and The Grand Underground makes up for the comparatively weak Pokédex, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s new art style and a few other stumbles make this pair of games a somewhat disappointing retread of Generation 4. They’re also very clearly in the shadow of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, the upcoming open-world-like Pokemon game that has fans hoping it can take the series in exciting new directions beyond 20-year-old mechanics. If the remit of these remakes was to remain faithful to the original Gen 4 pair, we wish they’d also stuck to the pixel-art aesthetic. Aside from The Grand Underground – and the connectivity with the current games in the series – there’s very little reason to play Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl over your original DS copies.

Very accurate score
A middling pair of games in a review written by Jordan Middler. I... I love coincidences like this.
(Despite the problems, it's still Pokemon and people will still eat it up).
Just really frustrating when I know that these could have been great games. I love Sinnoh but this is giving me no reason to drop my old carts for.
Permanent EXP share is still a best thing for casual gamers.
Not everyone like to play in hardcore level.
Also, they look so cute in Chibi style. 😚
I will observe their Chibi looking. 😉
Smh, lazy devs.
Meh, about the score I expected based on previews and people's reaction to the game's graphics.
Oh, and GI gave it an 8.5 (which I didn't expect). Does that mean NL is unbiased? Lol
Finally a Pokemon game that gets the score it deserves. Really a step down from remakes like FRLG, HGSS and ORAS. FRLG added a huge new post game (Sevii Islands) on top of the original, HGSS had new locations, readded locations like Viridian Forest etc which was missing from GSC and ORAS had tons of redesigned characters, new locations/reimagined location like Mauville, new Megas, new Post game story etc. Also all those 3 games had Pokemon up to the Gen they got remade in
BDSP on the other side just seems to be DP but in HD
I'm still looking forward to playing these despite my concerns, since they've taken a different approach to be more faithful to the DS experience, something we haven't seen in a long time.
So things like Pokémon encounters being random in grass tiles, doesn't bother me.
That review score though, is going to ruffle some feathers.
This score should come as a surprise to absolutely no-one. I appreciate the honest review, even for a Nintendo-published release.
God damn it. I put this game on my christmas list. that was a mistake.
I skipped all pokemon in the DS era (I've been playing since Red) so I guess this is still a good way to experience Sinnoh for the first time.
Can we call developers lazy now?
@Anti-Matter You’ve failed to understand that it should have been a choice. If you don’t want to play ‘hardcore’ (ironic enough as Pokémon games are always easy) then if this was a choice…. you could choose that.
@Anti-Matter Forced XP share is stupid. A toggle should have been implemented so everyone is happy not just "casual" gamers.
Disappointing, but not surprising.
Still getting it day one because I'm part of the problem.
@nessisonett don’t bother. If a game doesn’t have Chibi shirtless karate masters he isn’t interested. Haha.
@nessisonett
But Permanent EXP share was a decision from the developer, not by me.
Me personally just welcome that decision.
I play the game just the way it is, with Permanent EXP share since from beginning.
Yaay...! 😁
@Abeedo gamefreak didn't develop it... They are working on Arceus. Look at the developer on this page...
@alecseus gamefreak wasn't the developer....
I've never cared much for Diamond/Pearl, even the originals, but it does have my favourite soundtrack in the series. If nothing else I'm excited to listen to the remastered music.
This feels about right. From the very start, Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl looked like remakes that were TOO faithful to the source material.
Fire Red/Leaf Green, Heart Gold/Soul Silver, and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire were brilliant because they took some risks and expanded on their origins. These here just look like the exact same game with a fresh coat of paint.
@Anti-Matter Agreed... So give players a button to turn it on or off. Simple =/
My annoyance at Pokemom games these days is that features that make it easier are permanent. Can't turn the exp share off, and if I want pokemon to follow me. Then I have to be OK with them gaining god-like powers of shaking off status effects, maintaining 1HP on random hits, and dodging.
@Zuljaras
Again, that was the developer decision, not by me.
I just enjoy that opportunity from Permanent EXP Share. 😁
@Ragdoll72 GameFreak isn't the only developer studio in the world.
@IronMan30
Nintendo accidentally mailed the check to the wrong address.
@Mauzuri If peoples expectations were set by anything, it was likely by HGSS and ORAS. I don't think peoples expectations were too high.
I think the biggest issue for me with these remakes, is that it doesn't feel like they were trying to add new life to the games like they did with the previous remakes.
I'm not a fan of the chibi style but I think how unambitious these games are is a far greater flaw.
It's such a shame that Pokemon is a shadow of what it used to be now when they're finally available to be played on the big screen.
I was considering this at first even with the missing Platinum content but the forced exp.share was the dealbreaker.
@westman98 yeah, that must be it.
"Weak Pokedex" when you likely havent unlocked Nat dex or used the Radar yet. Overworld spawns are a thing too via swarms. Maybe finish your game before throwing out half a review
“””””incredible soundtrack””””””
Looks like a mobile game. Really lazy effort. Hope Arceus recovers because I would hate to see the Pokémon franchise end up like the Sonic franchise where we get used to mediocre games and lose excitement for new releases in the series
@Mauzuri I don't remember people hating ORAS though.
At the very least I enjoyed them. I don't see how they "changed too much".
I think maybe you're treating the "they changed too much" and the "they didn't change enough" people as if they were the same people. Any group of people are going to have different opinions. If you just treat them like the one person, of course they're going to sound like hypocrites.
I've never played a single Pokemon game but feel like it might be nice to play one through with my little boy. Big screen would make that easier than a handheld, but none of the big screen ones seem to be too popular. I can't stand the visual style of this one, so it's a definite no. Anyone got an opinion on where to start?
I actually (almost) spat my drink when I saw the score.
Why is this a new art style? My last gen (before sw/sh) was 3. and what I’ve seen from the das footage it looked the same. Just 3D instead of pixel.
Huge disagree.
I think they're worse than the games they are remakes off, but wouldn't give them a 6. I love that there is variety in gameplay and artstyle between all the Pokémon games on Switch and think that random battles is a boon for this release and not a con.
Also while the models in the overworld are a bit underwhelming, they don't look even close to a Funko Pop.
Having said all that, I respect that the reviewer didn't see it that way and thinks his experience with it deserves a 6.
@Anti-Matter "Nothing we can do but accept that fact"
Well that's not true. Consumers like you are of the belief that we owe companies their business, but it's the other way around. They need us . So criticism from consumers is extremely important. I don't get why people like you roll over and go, "Yeah! As long as it has Pokemon in it I'll buy it!"
Fans deserve better. YOU deserve better
@alecseus
No but it's unprecedented for anyone other than Game Freak to develop a mainline title.
We've had many spin-offs of different flavours, that occasionally have connected with the mainline games from developers like Genius Sonority, HAL Laboratory, Creatures Inc, Ambrella, Spike Chunsoft, Koei Tecmo, and probably more.
ILCA though is an anomaly. Their only history with the Pokémon franchise is the management app Pokémon Home, and they've mostly assisted with the development of other games since their inception in 2010.
How did ILCA get this prestigious task?
Really sucks that exp share is always on. I have been turning that off since red and blue haha
@itslukec
Oooh....
I will find Chibi handsome dudes from Pokemon BDSP once i got the game. 😛
@Anti-Matter I guess it is my fault that I can't celebrate restrictive
and outright bad decisions
I wanted these for my 8 year old kid, guess he'll receive Arceus instead
@Ragdoll72 but I didn't mention gamefreak...
Wow I wasn't really looking forward to these, but I definitely wasn't expecting a 6. Ouch!
No mention of the good endgame content? How far have you played if I may ask? I agree with most, but not mentioning this is a bit of a bummer.
Being able to catch all of Gen 1 - 4 and rebattling everyone with their beefy platinum EV-trained teams, is honestly a really cool thing and a big deal that should have been mentioned. This is not really a review. It just sounds like you watched a trailer and are critiquing it for its chibi look.
@CharlieGirl Ironically the fresh coat of paint makes it look even more dated.
Man, the charm of Pokémon is so strong that people continue to defend these mediocre video game experiences and balata my cash grabs. It’s crazy.
One of the few moments where NintendoLife's score is well below the aggregate score.
Looks like Nintendo's bribe checks will stop coming in 🤭.
Nice. Honest review. Appreciate
I’m still excited for these. Skipped this Gen when they originally released, then blazed through them years later to get some Pokémon for the bank.
Plus, it means we are one step closer to the remake of my favorite Pokémon games-Black and white!!
I'll still grab this. Never experienced the originals.
@Brydontk
I have never played Pokemon Diamond / Pearl before, have no idea what was going on from those games but for me as casual gamer and not really a huge fan of Pokemon to see Pokemon BDSP for the first time and heard about Permanent EXP share, it made me get excited as it sounds the game will be easy enough for someone who play Pokemon games casually.
Also, i have experienced with Permanent EXP Share from Yokai Watch 1 - 3 on 3DS since from the beginning of the game and it was a great thing to level up my Yokai team quickly.
Anyway, Permanent EXP share was a great decision in my opinion whether you disagree with that decision. 👍
@Abeedo You are not wrong.
@Mauzuri People were upset about ORAS not including the Battle Frontier or a replacement, that was the big thing I remember. Which is an issue here too so.
The worst and most biased review I have seen on here, poor show.
Is this review done with the day one patch in mind?
End of an era for me. This'll be the first mainline Pokemon game I won't be buying (well, at least at launch, catch me falling for a sale somewhere down the line and Nuzlocking it)... well, ever. This would have been a day one purchase if it included the Battle Frontier, but without it, and with permanent Exp. Share, I just don't feel like playing this one right now.
And seriously, @Anti-Matter, what are you not getting about how there would be ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE TO YOU if there was a choice whether to have the Exp. Share on or off? It's pissing everyone off when you keep rubbing it in all our faces that you're still going to have a good time playing while everyone else is frustrated that a feature was removed that still would have let you play the EXACT same way you will be playing. I know english isn't your first language but you have got to understand by this point why the way you're going about this is making people mad, so I can only feel that you're purposefully being rude to everyone who would rather have the choice of on or off.
@Anti-Matter I get that, and I'm a big JRPG fan, most of them have "permanent exp share". The problem with Pokemon is they haven't figured out how to do that while keeping the game challenging. The battles aren't designed that way. I'm playing Shin Megani Tensei now and I absolutely love it and IT shares exp through the party while keeping it challenging. But because Pokemon is not designed to work that way. Literally, for this franchise, I'd just like a button to turn it off like they have had in all non-switch games.
Enjoyed reading this review. At least there one person that will enjoy the socks out of this game. Chibi boys with six packs. This one’s for you @Anti-Matter don’t finish all the soap
@Anti-Matter As someone who have played both the original Pokemon DP and Yokai Watch 1-3, I'll tell you that these systems aren't even remotely comparable (team fights vs 1v1). You couldn't really break YW and get your team super overleveled until later stages of these games, but in Pokemon shared EXP results in a snowball effect where the beginning will be easy and anything beyond the mid-point will be auto-win.
Pokemon fanboys will get angry their overrated game isn't getting 9 and 10 from reviews
Not sure what people are looking at, this looks way better then the 3DS original, and the game will sell like hot cakes.
This review reads like pure fan service for the haters, I mean what do people expect from a remake, it's a way for all the new players to enjoy these classic games.
Chibi art isn't a big deal. But the EXP share is a little disconcerting. EV training Pokemon is gonna be a slight pain.
@KBuckley27 I don't know what pokemon fanboys have ever done in their lives to make you think they're ever satisfied with a pokemon game
Such a shame that the pinnacle of the Pokemon series (and really all of generation 4 was excellent) has been reduced to such a mediocre mess. I'd like to think that the casuals will wake up to this and stop giving their money to a series that doesn't deserve it, but that'll probably only happen when pigs fly.
I’m still getting it.😃
In the underground can you see if a pokemon is shiny?
@Anti-Matter You are afforded no new opportunities with permanent exp share. To satisfy both you and I, all they needed to do is have it on by default… with an option to turn it off. That’s called a win-win scenario. As is, only some win.
@Kreko
The chibi artstyle wouldn't be so much of an issue, if they didn't feel the need to take the camera down to ground level all the time.
The original DS game would always keep the birds-eye view except for some very special cutscenes.
When nintendo have games like this, no wonder they don’t want to make a switch pro.
Removed - disrespecting others
People tell me Platinum was one of the best games in the series, so I was hoping for some Platinum content. I wasn't a fan of the original Diamond, but I'll still give these a shot. I'll probably wind up playing this with my kid.
@PBNightmare
I believe I've seen footage demonstrating that shiny Pokémon will not appear shiny on the overworld prior to the encounter.
Which I think is how the wild area for Sword/Shield operated, compared to Let's Go where overworld Pokémon would be shiny before entering an encounter.
Nice, links awakening remake shouldve also had the ugly art style as a con. And so should the advance wars remake so that maybe theres a sliver of a chance that they stop with these ugly toy designs
@johnvboy It’s a DS game and it will sell like hot cakes. Visually, as the review states, battles look better but the overworld is more of what you prefer. For example, I think golf story looks great with pixel art, and it wouldn’t be better if it went for the chibi look.
Also, and this is true of any game from the DS era, they haven’t found a good solution for the lack of dual screens so it can be said that the originals will have a superior gaming experience.
@NinTempo Agreed, I could be wrong, but having seen all the ‘leaked’ pre-release footage that has been uploaded by those that have played it early, I really can’t wait now.
“The art style is a downgrade from the original” - I don’t mind it.
“No overworld spawns in Sinnoh” - Doesn’t bother me at all.
“Lacking Platinum features” - Like what? The review just states this, but then fails to go into any detail whatsoever about what these features actually are. From what I’ve seen, it contains more Platinum features than I personally would have expected.
“Over-levelling is very easy” - Alright, that’s actually a legitimate point. My Pokémon were almost in their 90s during the Elite 4 of ORAS. Just let us turn EXP Share off already 🙄
Either way, I’m still hyped.
@NinTempo Who only wants to carry around 1 Pokemon at a time? That's inconvenient and stupid. Don't be a small brain.
@Judal27 Depends on the game. I mostly liked the look in links awakening and the art style in advanced wars seems to fit an actual motif, of toy soldiers.
@Anti-Matter Have you played the last few Pokemon games? They've all had the OPTION to have Exp. Share permanently on, just like your beloved Yokai Watch (which is an entirely different game and was made with shared experience in mind, so overleveling doesn't happen by simply playing the goddamn game).
What everyone is disappointed in is that they used to have the CHOICE to turn off the shared experience and give themselves a more challenging adventure. If you don't go in and turn it off, it's the SAME THING as permanent Exp. Share, and you can have your casual experience. It's the same to you whether it's a choice or not.
So stop celebrating the lack of choice, because it's not an addition for you, it's only a loss for everyone who would rather have the choice.
@RupeeClock Cool thanks. I'm a little disappointed in that. I really liked how Let's Go allowed you to see shiny pokemon.
@NinTempo That is even more ridiculous than what Anti-Matter is saying.
@Anti-Matter I wish you could turn it off tho. That would be a perfect solution, with the casual players being able to toggle it on
Stop ***** on random battles, and allow it to be an option. I HATE overworld encounters like, so much. Give people choices
@PBNightmare No, you have to start the battle first in order to see.
@Anti-Matter It's NOT AN OPPORTUNITY. Nothing has changed for you. All the games since X/Y have had Exp. Share. Every single one. This one just removed the option to turn it off. It's the exact same for you, but worse for us. Nobody is trying to say that you shouldn't have the ability to share experience. It's been part of the game for almost a decade, but we've always been able to turn that option off until now. Please try to understand this or it'll be obvious that you're just being an ass.
I mean, this is kind of a placeholder till pokemon legends
@abbyhitter It must be have done with the day 1 patch in mind or else it would be impossible to praise the sound track as prepatch it included the DS midi sounds.
@Anti-Matter You're completely missing the point. Other games in the series have had the option to turn off shared EXP. So for the latest game in the series to remove that option just feels disappointing and unnecessary. It's fine if you personally enjoy shared EXP, but there should be a solution for both types of players.
Wow super surprised by that score I wasn’t expecting that. Still looking forward to getting my copy though.
@alecseus I think tossing the criticism of "lazy" has simply become lazy in itself. Usually lobbed by people who dont understand (or respect) the work it takes to release a competent, functioning, game in the first place.
Even in cases where devs are legit lazy (blatant asset flipping, quantity over quality shovelware ratio, cynically low-effort overall, etc.), one could probably still elaborate with a bit more than two tired words.
I'm sure I'm in the minority here but I prefer the random encounters, especially when I nuzlocke.
The art style is a downgrade from the original:
Yes I kinda agree, sure the remakes do still look charming but it is worse. Kinda mixed here, because being worse doesn't make it bad, I like it.
No overworld spawns in Sinnoh:
Didn't like that in S&S, but I can imagine some did like it
Lacking Platinum features:
This was to be expected, still sad because the expanded Battle Frontier was such a great addition in Platinum
Over-levelling is very easy:
I had same issue in S&S, but I blame the forced EXP share for it.
I would say the games deserve a 7, 6 is a tad bit low in my opinion because the original games were awesome but I get where this is coming from.
Imagine begging for your story team to be under levelled. The only slight issue of Exp Share being permanant is whilst EV training and that is easily solved by depositing mons you dont want to get EVs. Having played BD already, its a solid 8/10. NintendoLife just reviewed half the game and gave it a 6
@Steviecomebacks I'm definitely with you there.
Ok I’m cool with the 6/10 but can people stop with these unreal expectations with these remakes? Its a REMAKE!! What do y’all expect to be added? You buy this game if you wanted the nostalgia feeling. That’s it. I’m sure it won’t be perfect but lol its Pokémon. I’m just happy we are getting another game to play.
@StarPoint He’s not missing the point. This has been explained to him many times, in many comment sections, over many months. He just doesn’t care. Some people thrive off the attention, and they’re perhaps best left ignored.
@anzzjam,
Just think this looks so much better, plus you can play docked or on the handheld screen, will be all over this at launch.
I feel the overworld changes are a positive. The beauty of the top-down games was you could fill in the blanks with your imagination. You pictured in your head all the Pokemon interacting with each other like proper wildlife and all was good.
When they added spawning creatures to the grass it completely flips the scenario: why are these Pokemon all hanging around in one patch of grass? Why aren't they in the trees or the sky? It ruins that illusion.
@PokemonSB
Battle Frontier
But even while I had expect it lacking that, it still sucks.
@NinTempo There are tons of issues. You end up overleveled, or if you go with your "solution" of depositing Pokemon you don't want overleveled, obviously you don't get to use those Pokemon.
Also it makes it difficult to keep the level of your team balanced because different Pokemon gain levels at different rates. Even as early as level 20, the differences are huge - Pokemon range from needing 998 to 1,978 experience to reach level 21. With everyone in the party getting the same experience, you need to use the ones on the slower curves way more while barely ever using the ones on the fast curves with permanent shared experience. With shared experience off, that's much less of a problem.
@Markiemania95 So he's just a troll? I suppose I should have figured that
@PokemonSB People wanted features from Platinum like the Distortion World and the Battle Frontier. It's not really pure "additions" that we were looking for.
@Bret
My first Pokemon game from Pokemon X on year 2013.
I have no idea about the gameplay but i realized there was like EXP Share in the game but not from beginning.
The other Pokemon games i played are Alpha Sapphire, Sun, Ultra Moon, Omega Ruby but only Pokemon X and Alpha Sapphire already finished, the other games are still unfinished.
I also have Pokemon Black 2 (with save data from previous owner Hehehe... I didn't delete it 😁) and White 2 but still unfinished until today.
Meanwhile, i played Yokai Watch games on 3DS since March 2021 and i quickly finished all the three games, even faster than Pokemon games.
I think i have more interest with Yokai Watch than Pokemon.
Also, getting upset with the developer decision will not make the game suddenly have that option. I just accept the developer decision and play the game.
@NinTempo yeah I don’t get people that complain about that stuff. I like exp share where you don’t have to grind for half a day.
@PokemonSB It's not a hard concept to understand. I think a lot of people just want a game that's fun and engaging. They don't want a 15-20 hour slog where you just win by pressing A (because you can't turn off Exp. Share). Regarding the people who wanted Platinum content in the remakes, I think that's a fair request given the amount of resources The Pokemon Company has but refuses to use to improve the quality of the games.
Think of it like this: if you said that Steph Curry (for reference: he is one of the most talented athletes in the NBA) was going to only score 5 points a game for the next 3 NBA seasons, then people would naturally be disappointed because they expect more from him. They know he can do better because he has consistently done it in the past. Apply that same logic to these more recent Pokemon games that have been released over the last few years. See the comparison?
@Bret Oh yeah, because once you deposit a mon it can never leave the PC again, my bad. Definitely not you hoping for the lazy option
@StarPoint
Again, it was a decision from the developer.
I just accept their decision and play the game peacefully.
Getting upset by their decision will not make the game suddenly have an option to turn off exp share.
@Bret Not to spoil anything, but… there are some Platinum features in the game. Just thought I should clarify that before you assume that neither of those things, or perhaps other things, are or aren’t in it based on this review.
@Anti-Matter "just accept the developer's decision". Right. Okay, so I should just like every game and can't complain about anything because I'm the problem, not the game.
Hear that, everyone? The GTA III remakes aren't worth complaining about, the AI upscaling was just a developer decision and we have to just accept that! It's all so clear to me now!
@PokemonSB ... When do you even have to grind in Pokemon games? Did you try to use tackle all the way through Lavender Town?
Seriously though, Pokemon games have been hilariously easy as they are, and it's clear that Exp share on as an only option is stupid as you easily end up overleveled. If you like the feature more power to you, but it's really simple and easy to understand that many don't.
@Markiemania95 You have my attention. I'll look that up.
@Dizzard ORAS wasn't generally hated but I still saw some few complaints about it, namely the removal of the battle frontier in favor of the Delta episode. Personally, I loved the Delta episode as it felt like an after-story for the game.
Going back to the topic, I expect that the game will get lower scores. I'm still going to play the remakes nonetheless. I don't have any nostalgia for Pokémon DPP as that was the time that I lost interest to the franchise until XY. I've just played the games some few years ago so my memories of the OG games are fresh. It's going to be interesting for me to replay the games in 3D since I can understand as to why a lot of people were complaining that the OG games were too slow.
I also wish that EXP. share can be turned off but I've already came in terms with that since SWSH and I feel like I don't want to experience the slow grinding from the OG games anyway plus I can just do a nuzlocke if I want to challenge myself
@DTFaux Okay,i will call them lackadaisical from now on.
@NinTempo
I want to ask about the Rhythm game in Pokemon BDSP.
Is that mini game fun enough to play and what is the reward by clearing the song ?
@Bret All I’m saying is its cool to have something be in the game but I’m sure low scores for the game will be from critics or players who expecting way too much out of a remake game
I’m really pleased with this review, you really took into account the changes Pokémon has had over the years and it’s clear this opinion is representative of a long term fan.
So many reviewers just either shill out or fanboy over Nintendo/ Pokémon and give these games glowing reviews because the classic Pokémon formulae is still fun.
You actually looked at the game objectively and logically and for that you gain my respect.
@Anti-Matter That's not necessarily true. If the company listens to feedback, they could add that option in a later update. That's a bad mindset to have, anyway. We shouldn't just mindlessly accept everything that developers choose to do. We have a choice as to whether we support those decisions or not.
@Anti-Matter The contests? I did one and left. Assuming its just ribbons or unlocks stickers for Ball capsules
I pre-ordered a long time ago for both games. I'm sure I'll still enjoy them, though, since I never played the originals.
@NinTempo
Okay.
I will try it out once i got the game.
Having no overworld spawns is a plus to me, personally i prefer not knowing what is coming next that element of surprise is partly what drew me in originally, having overworld spawns at least in part takes away from that experience to me
It's the best selling game on the eshop right now!
Guys, leave @Anti-Matter alone, hes always posting rubbish takes in these comments, hes just trying to peeve people off and cause arguments - not worth the fuss
@alecseus Unless you're being facetious, my general point is to not boil criticism [or praise] down to one or two words.
@Meteoroid I completely understand that developers, just like people in every profession, are going to have off years - that's just part of being human. However, there's a difference between having an off year because maybe you just had a creative block and having an off year because you decided to cut corners in order to meet a deadline (the holiday shopping period). I don't see any passion or ambition in these games and that's what used to guide the development of the older games in the series. The only thing I see is greed and apathy, which is a shame.
I'd probably give this a pass if I were getting it for myself, but since my nephew wanted it and I've never fully played through Gen 4, I'll be giving Shining Pearl a go.
Will definitely be rotating my Pokemon around as much as possible to keep them from getting overleveled, though, like I did in Sword/Shield, which increased the difficulty substantially.
@Anti-Matter watch out for Cynthia's nasty plot Lucario bro!
I love Pokemon....yes even the last few generations.
This is disappointing.
I canceled my order - they lost a sale.
Gen IV deserved megatons better.
@smithpa01 I personally like both and I feel that's one of the few things that SWSH did right. I love the Pokémon roaming around to make the overworld look more alive and at the same time, I still love the random encounters for the surprises
@StarPoint,
He is not a troll at all, he is on here lots and just has a different opinion, we need to stop calling everyone who does not agree with us a troll.
@Gumbo1995,
Why?, because he refuses to join in with the usual Pokemon echo chamber, that tends to exist on these comment sections.
@StarPoint
I'm not merely accept everything from developer decision. If there was decision from game developer i completely disagree, i will complain too, like when Konami still not porting their DDR A20+ for consoles.
For Pokemon games, since i have no idea about the games especially from older machine, i saw the modern Pokemon games were still acceptable enough for me. I didn't feel any difficulty to continue the game, i have no idea about complicated features that make peoples keep debating about.
And what should i do with Pokemon BDSP ?
Should i have to complain and getting upset with Permanent EXP Share ?
@johnvboy I'm not saying he's a troll because he has different opinions. I'm saying he's a troll because he refuses to listen to any reasoning and he's just trying to get attention.
Seriously, that lack of overworld spawning really ruins it for me. I know that's a small ding in a large plate of pretty good/passable things... It's just, the random battles can get sooooo tedious and frustrating as you're trying to explore. In a game that sometimes, or often(?), rewards exploring, that's so counterintuitive. Sure, back in the day, you could only have so many sprites on screen before compromising the frame rate so it really wasn't possible... but these days it's totally possible.
@NinTempo
What are Cynthia's Pokemons in BDSP ?
I have to know their weakness.
@Anti-Matter I'm not saying you have to complain. In fact, nobody has to complain. But if a lot of people have an issue with the fact that there is no choice for them, then I think that's worth some complaining. Like I already said, just because you're fine with how a system works doesn't mean everyone is fine with it. There should be an option to suit different players' preferences.
Only a 6? seems a bit low. i would've got gone 7, maybe 8
@StarPoint,
He is listening to you, but like he said it's up top the developer at the end of the day as to how they implement things, in this case they have opted for the most accessible option.
So you have to either accept it and get on with the game, or move on and don't buy it.
Simple choice really.
For the record I think there should be a choice, but it's not up to me at the end of the day.
@Anti-Matter Pretty sure the first time you face any trainer, they have the same team as they had the originals. Vs seeker and Re-doing the E4 gives them new teams though
@Anti-Matter Garchomp, Lucario, Roserade, Spiritomb, Milotic, & either Gastrodon or Togekiss - I believe the last one depends on how many times you’ve defeated her before in BDSP, but I’m not 100% sure of that.
Just want to point out that this review score is the lowest critic review on metacritic. Also the author has only done 1 other review for Toem on nintendolife. With reviews it is subjective and it is important to know if the author likes the same types and aspects of games that you do.
@StarPoint
I knew it should be an option in the game.
But since the developer decided to put permanent exp share, i personally happy to hear that since i play Pokemon games casually, not very competitive.
Am i not allowed to feel happy with that decision because of a lot of peoples getting upset with that decision ?
@InkIdols inversely somehow I didn't see much that actually disappointed me here. Or rather i didn't see much about the bit that MIGHT have(actual games features).
Most of the review seem to be exclusively the reviewer's dislike of the art style(to the point of venting it wasn't pixel art) and... I saw nothing much about game features the female might be missing or not compared to the original?
If anything the fact it seem to edge so close to the original gameplay wise is... actually close to what I wanted anyway because I never played Gen4 and though I have a 3DS I know couldn't play something of the length of a RPG exclusively in handheld as would be the case if I played the original cart.
Meanwhile the fact that gen4 is among(with Gen5) the last gens predating gimmicks like mega-evolution/z-moves/dynamax is also another thing that make me further glad for the remakes staying closer to the gen4 games rather than trying to go out of their way to be a "gen8" game and showing dynamax or else in a region that never featured it originally(it's one of the thing that always annoyed me in ORAS is how clearly mega evolution had been tacked to a story/region that had never featured it initially just to be "gen6-like").
So I was expecting to see something that would turn me off from this game in this review and ultimately... didn't, really?
"Over-levelling is very easy"... It seems to be getting worse with each entry. So happy that I used my money on SMTV instead.
Gen 3 was my favorite generarion ever and ORAS was the best remake yet. This "remake" of gen 4 is a complete step down and those defending it tooth and nail should go back to play ORAS to know what they are missing.
@Forral,
Still think after all the Pokemon sword and shield issues, Nintendo life have gone to appease the haters with this review, up to them I suppose, as a better score would have probably led to more outrage.
Looks like 7.5 out of 10 would have been a fairer score, perhaps even 8.
I wonder some times if there shouldn't be two reviews for games like these; one for those who played the original game in the past, and one for those who have never played the original game.
I say this because while I can understand your rating of the game based on your expectations as someone who played the original game, I think that for someone who has never played the original and is experiencing this game for the first time, it probably is a little better than a 6 out of 10.
@Anti-Matter Again, as I have already said, "It's fine if you personally enjoy shared EXP, but there should be a solution for both types of players." You shouldn't celebrate developers limiting peoples' options.
@johnvboy I mean, I'm personally not buying the game. But it's not a good idea for developers to limit players' options. It's not a big deal for me, but I know it is for a lot of others.
@StarPoint,
Depends on how many people are put off by this, I know I will still buy the game, guess this one is going for the younger audience who are new to the franchise.
Will be a filler for me until Legends drops, and will be able to sell it for pretty much retail price in three months or so.
@johnvboy Youre bang on there lad. NintendoLife are just trying to to cause a similar wave of hatred so they can say "Look, we said 6/10, we're cool like the rest of the haters"
I don't particularly like gen. 4 and I struggled getting to the end of Pokémon Pearl back in the day, so I think I'll skip this one. I wonder what went wrong after Gold/Silver, though. Too many Pokémon? Difficult balance between tradition and innovation? All the other titles felt like a drag to me (partial exceptions White and Sun/Moon)
The "Cons" listed here don't really seem like cons to me.
I love the art style. I find it incredibly cozy and allows for the game to look sharp, run well and avoid pop in like Sword and Shield.
No overworld spawns doesn't seem like a big deal to me.
Lack of Platinum features, sure, I can understand the criticism. But I don't think it makes the game significantly less fun. Seems like a fairly minor gripe.
Over-leveling being easy means under-leveling is harder. And I appreciate that because I'm not gonna spend dozens of hrs grinding in this. It's a reasonable criticism though. Just not a "justifies a 6/10" criticism.
This looks more appealing to me than any other Pokémon game yet because of the art style and solid performance. Sword and Shield looked great but pop in killed it for me.
Most other reviewers are giving it 7, 8 and 9 out of 10. Feels like this is an outlier review that doesn't align with my values.
I trust Nintendo Life but, sorry, I don't find those negatives so important to score with a 6/10, a new game without bugs and great performance. The question is if the game is good for new players and if it worth the 60 euros price.
Eh some of these cons are debatable especially that 6 score.
Definitely wouldn’t rate this any lower then an eight since a lot of the gripes I see here seems superficial/reactionary based. This is also the big outlier score review this game has got since there is no consistency that other reviewers feel this is objectively as low as a 6. They gave Let’s Go a higher review score so let that sink in that they likely jumped into the fanbase bandwagon.
@NinTempo,
The review just seem a little off to me.
@PokemonSB
Not for $60, no.
For $30 or maybe even $40... sure your point wins.
Feel like if Nintendo had more ownership/control of the franchise we’d see much higher quality from Pokemon games. Just compare Sword/Shield and Shining Pearl/Brilliant Diamond to Dragon Quest XI and the Dragon Quest 3 remake. Makes no sense as to why DQ games have so much more passion and polish put behind them versus Pokemon when DQ’s global appeal is so vastly inferior. Anyone and their mum’s could’ve predicted Pearl and Diamond remakes to launch around this time, why didn’t they peg a studio long ago to focus on remakes and make them reflective of the juggernaut that Pokemon is?
Having said all of that, I have pre-ordered Shining Pearl out of nostalgia for P/D and no longer having the original cartridge. Fully aware I am part of the problem and I’m one of millions upon millions of people who will buy half-assed Pokemon efforts despite complaining about them. C’est la vie.
@Abeedo That's not how it works. Developers aren't choosing the feature requirements. Line of business is and the developers do what they are told.
I feel like some of the listed cons are quite subjective rather than them being actual flaws of the game. I actually find the artstyle cute due to the chibi style and I'm not sure about being a downgrade from the original. Not like the original games were in complete 3D. Are you saying that they retain the 2D sprites instead?
No overworld spawn, eh, again subjective. Some Pokémon players actually prefer the surprise elements. I mean, it's a great feature yeah and I feel a lot of modern JRPG adapts to this system but yeah, some purists would prefer the random encounters.
Lacking Platinum features - if I'm not mistaken, someone already pointed out that there are some features from the Platinum version available in the game.
Also, why is no option to turn off EXP. share is not a con when it's something that was pointed out on your review?
I do appreciate the review, it does set some expectation but I feel that a lot of the points here are subjective
As person who hasn't played the originals, doesn't have a ds to buy them for and isn't interested in emulators are the remakes worth buying?
Can't the last 10-15 years of mainline Pokemon games be described as 'middling'?
So they're alright games, but also perfectly skippable. My biggest issue with Shield (outside of the dialogue and Hop) was being overlevelled. Battles were a case of pressing A mindlessly without putting any thought into them.
As overlevelling is a problem here too, and there's nothing particularly impressive about these games, I'll skip these or maybe wait for a sale.
It's going to sell well, and will set the precedent for future remakes.
I think the worst part for me is feeling like we got robbed of a 'proper' remake. We've got used to Pokemon remakes feeling like modern games. Usually, they improve on the 'new generation' game that came before them.
@johnvboy They gave Let's go an 8/10, the reviewer hear is clearly trying to jump on a bandwagon
@FuzzieGinge88 Very much so, ignore this review and enjoy!
I didn’t love Diamond when I bought a DS and Diamond in a mid-Pokemon Go hype frenzy. These remakes don’t look very interesting. Let’s Go was pleasant but too relaxing, not in a good way. Sword and Shield felt like a missed opportunity. I love the series but it has felt like so long that a game has been truly engaging. I can’t remember any challenge or peril since Ruby and Sapphire. I appreciate that it might get more involved in the competitive scene but I wish they were more enjoyable single player games.
Author name checks out
Small point of contention, but weren't Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee more remakes of Yellow than they were of Red and Blue (or Red and Green).
lol, lmao, people like good games? not me tho, the bad the better, i love a wasted potential, its goty for me
ps: irony
Okay, I don’t think I’m getting this. I’m a dad now and this just isn’t giving me $60 of fun. I got burned on let’s go pikachu as that was certainly not worth $60. I get the split gen thing for main games, but now that these are technically on consoles and the price is much higher than the original releases, can they at least make the remakes one game? I would have at least played through let’s go again if I could use the other starter. We know the Pokémon company farmed this one out and from all appearances, it was a quick and low cost remake. Why in the world is every switch release $60 now? I’m done for a while with gaming I guess. Nothing new has sparked me. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m sad that games, even remakes, are so phoned in now.
@Anti-Matter nobody is saying it was your decision and not the dev’s Haha.
I already preordered several copies to support the developers. The remakes look great (the art style is literally a 3D translation of what the originals looked like, people are delusional) and these games are going to make a ton of money.
@Mauzuri I thought people's problems with ORAS were actually very similar to the situation we now have with these titles - that there is a definitive third version which went completely unused despite having big quality of life changes and improvements.
If anything I see ORAS getting flack for not changing enough.
The only points I agree with are the lack of Platinum content and (especially) the art style. Unless if "patches" are on the way, ILCA definitely should've included some of that game's content in these remakes. The art style? Yikes. Just...yikes. Faithfulness is one thing I do like a bit of chibi myself, but BDSP's is yikes for me.
Otherwise, I'm still somewhat interested in these games (despite having "meh" feelings for the originals on DS) and even then, the EXP Share gives the remakes the automatic upper hand over the originals for me because nowadays, I just can't devote as much time into RPGs as much as I used to.
One save file again, I imagine. For reasons that aren’t good, and it’s $60? Same price as what Arcues legends will be. I just hate that pricing is so arbitrary, some games need to be 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and even 70 if warranted. I bought links awakening for 60, like an idiot. These prices are insane.
The remakes for the 3 generations were great but, in my opinion, Pokemon reached a peak style-wise during the DS era and I don't think these remakes were really necessary. I think I might give Shining Pearl a go at some point, but for now I will just continue to enjoy Pearl and Platinum versions on DS.
@CovidBarbie Several copies? To support the devs? Why? It’s a freaking remake, at best, your compulsive buying will convince them that they need to make the next mainline game 4 games so people like you might buy all 4 three times to show your support of burning money.
@CovidBarbie I was wondering when you were going to turn up to try and antagonise people.
When are they gonna push these games forward? 1 v 1 turn based battles are incredibly limiting. Dragon Warrior had it in it's first game only, and when they added a simple party system to Dragon Warrior 2 and beyond, the series has never been better. But for some reason, Pokemon, after a couple decades of releases, still doesn't utilize a good party system. Yikes, man.
@Kevember Pokémon was best on dual screens and HHSS certainly seem to be the peak of the franchise. Personally, I love white and black too but everything after has been a pretty big disappointment. Gen 6 is when I stopped remembering the locations, names of anybody and even some Pokémon as things became stale.
@BloodNinja I think single battles are fine, and the tweaks over the years help. There are double battles and those change things up considerably. The big problem is that the entire game is single battle focused. With the two versions nonsense, maybe they can try making the other game double battles. It’s not so much the gameplay mechanics that are stale, it’s everything else. The campaign is just such a slog, at least for anything after Gen 5.
If it's youtube dislikes, it's a WAVE of a vocal minority. If it's comments, we're anti-Nintendo. When the reviewers write a 6/10 (which isn't even horrible), they have caved to the haters.
Just say you don't like criticism. You can just own it instead of finding ways to invalidate why something seems to not resonate with an audience. Maybe we just value consumer input differently.
And if you like the recent offerings from Pokemon on the switch or (with this one in particular) their art style, that's awesome. I wish I could, too, because this franchise has so much potential. I have a living Dex out of how much time I've invested in this series, and am looking forward to hearing good things from Legends. fingers mad crossed
Removed - trolling; user is banned
I'm not surprised someone who thinks HGSS is the best game in the series gave this a 6/10
@NinTempo
the lets go games and this game were both reviewed by different people who were likely looking for different things from the games.
as for this review, the reviewer listed what they disliked about the game and what disappointed them.
If the aspects that the reviewer disliked about the game don't bother you then that's fine, a review after all is just someone's opinion on something.
Hmmm, whilst I don't have any plans to revisit this entry, I'm not sure I agree with several main points of the review.
I actually really like the chibi models, they look nothing like Funko (Funko are all about the cold dead eyes and 'need a poo' squat stance), these are just chibi and they're both well done and an accurate translation of the original pixel art in 3D. Sure they're proving divisive, but that doesn't mean they deserve to be knocked down a score.
They should have retained the pixel art? Why? Then it would just be a port of the old game rather than a remake. This comment feels like it was made with little thought as to what it actually meant.
Random battles are a step back? Well this is a remake of an older entry where random battles were the staple. and honestly whilst I really enjoyed Sword and Shield I do miss random battles a little. They had them a bit but for the most part you could see what was there and just go around them if you didn't need them for your 'dex. I think they could come up with a better hybrid system, but I wouldn't expect that here.
Oh well.
Oh my, I lived to this moment to see a bad score on a core Pokemon game. Nice.
@CovidBarbie You aren’t going to donate these games. I hope your kids do enjoy these games, but no need to lie about your intentions. I also don’t believe you are actually going to buy several copies, but that’s another story.
Great review. I wish Pokemon fans would sit out the bad or meh games so we could get better stuff.
@anzzjam Troll harder next time.
Wow a 6/10, well I guess I shouldn’t be to surprised. Considering how they handle this remake it will get mixed feelings, similar to Let’s Go.
I’m still picking up my copy, most of the issues don’t bother me.
@Ludovsky I still want to get it, but this initally concerned me,.
The sinnoh remakes felt like a let down since they were revealed, I've always wanted sinnoh remakes and I was hoping to see it done like sword and shield or let's go. I guess Only Pokémon can sell bdsp at $60 that look like those bootleg mobile games and have people defend it to the death
And yet it will still sell well regardless of the upset and dissatisfied NL comment sections.....
I will end up getting it at some point and chimchar will be my starter yay
Definitely agree regarding the art style. It's such a downgrade over the original. This style of chibi characters works wonderfully in pixel art form, but when directly translated to 3D, it just doesn't work anymore. They should have gone with the visual style of Let's Go's character models.
Based reviewer
A little surprised by the score considering Pokemon games usually get at least an 8/10 here even when they're terrible but not surprised that the games are mediocre. Right from the start it just looked like a cheap cash grab to me more than anything else. Ugly art style that just takes away all the charm of the originals.
Very well written review, I’m one who hasn’t refrained from manifesting disappointment with many reviews over NL’s last 15+ years, but I’m happy to point it out when a review, in my opinion, is great (and it has nothing to do with the score or if I agree with it). Bravo, @jordan miller
Umm… no lol. These are absolutely not a visual downgrade and beyond that they are wildly fun and run smooth as hell 😂 I’ve been playing diamond nonstop for about a week and a half now and I can say most of these points are completely invalid, this is one of the best pokemon games ive ever played. If you like pokemon games you will not be disappointed in this one.
The problem isn't that the art style is "Chibi". It's that it's done so poorly and lazily.
@MARl0 lmao this looks so much better than lets go when compared side by side…
Not @Anti-matter ruining another thread with more terrible opinions.
I find it just stupid that they just completely ignored Platinum. Seriously?
@CovidBarbie You must be a troll account after CovidBerry got banned. Are you just here to spread misery, or say anything constructive? I know it's bad to feed trolls but you're also thoroughly entertaining with your delusion.
@fenlix Based in what?
NL: gives big name switch game a good score
comment section: Must be biased, like always
NL: gives big name switch game a MIDDLING, not even bad, score
comment section, still, somehow: Must be biased, probably didn't even play the whole game
does anyone here know how a review works???
I think the art style is great and fits the game very well, this is a 9 out of 10 for me, this is such a lame review, this is why I do not trust video game critics, this game is not supposed to be BOTW, it looks fun, and is going to be worth the full price of 60 bucks, it is going to be better than anything on the PS5, that system has ZERO QUALITY GAMES, at least diamond and pearl blow away anything Sony has. FACT NOT AN OPINON. me and sister will enjoy the games. I hope the pokemon company remakes all the classic pokemon games in this style, it fits and will make them better than the originals, so 9 out of 10 for me, video game critics would not know a great game, if it hit them over the head.
@mariopartyfan68 This has got to be a troll post, right?
Nintendo Life comments are always a trip. Somehow commenters think this is the only 'honest' review, because of it's lower score. Mind you that 6/10 on the Nintendo Life scale is "Not Bad", where as other reviewers treat 6 very differently. Review scoring, both in numbered scoring and the actual scores are all subjective.
It's obvious people feel a lot different about the art-style and mechanics of the games. As always Pokemon fans are completely divided on what they want, I know people who love they went the true to form remake and stayed away from the Swsh route, and some that hate that they didn't go the SwSh route. You'll never please everyone.
I tend to ignore scores, and just focus on the content of the review and in that case it's a pretty good review, even if I disagree on a lot of points. It does feel a bit disingenuous to say that SwSh were 'plagued' with framerate issues, when there's only a single area of the game that I can experience any notable framerate drops in and that's when you're connected to the online in the wild area, other than that it's a very smooth game.

Nintendo seemingly offered less content here than in Platinum. Platinum was $40 on DS, yet they want $60 per game for these remakes.
That Nintendo laziness and greed strikes again
The glaring issue with the remake beyond the atrocious and inconsistent art style is the fact that it lacks platinum features. There is just no excuse for that.
Ya’ll do realize that platinum was never advertised whatsoever as being part of this collection.. right? It seems like a lot of people here have a very distorted expectation for ‘diamond’ and ‘pearl’ having another game contained in them hahaha
@NinTempo,
Without a doubt, NL pandering to the sword and shield mob, shame really as this seems a nice remake, the visuals look so nice to me, a perfect blend of the old style, with a new more modern twist, this will just pop on the OLED screen.
A bit poor from Nintendo in not making this the definitive version of the pearl and diamond game. Maybe they should have had an option where you could have the original pixel style. I think one of the Dragon Quests on 3DS had this option, if I remember correctly. Shame also the went for the irritating antiquated spawns.
Still a good video game but below average for a mainline Pokemon series game.
Do better with pokemon on the switch!

@NintyRift,
Such is the mentality of these Pokemon comment sections, good review equals the reviewers in Nintendo's pockets and not to be trusted, bad review is right on the money, and the reviewer daring to tell people how it is.
Honestly, some of the people on here.
Oh wow, when even a site as clearly biased towards Nintendo as NL gives it a 6/10... Glad I didn't pre-order this one.
Finally NintendoLife is actually critical of a Pokemon game in their review. And the game deserves it, it's so heavily outdated and needlessly faithful to a ridiculous degree. Nothing wrong with wanting a similar experience to the originals but when you bring back the bathwater with the baby it doesn't really do the game any favors.
I do think the review focuses on the art style a little too much, since it's a subjective matter. Sometimes I think the chibis don't look too bad, sometimes in motion they look awful. Honestly I wish ILCA committed to the artstyle even more and gave the overworld Pokemon chibi models too. Then Dialga and Rayquaza could have big heads to match their trainer's art style, instead of being fully proportioned but scaled down little lizards like everyone is memeing right now.
I DO however appreciate the review mentioning the Houndoom you can catch in the grand underground early game. Like seriously, a HounDOOM? Houndour wasn't enough?? This kind of curve breaking drives me crazy, the whole appeal of the game is training up and evolving weaker Pokemon.
Finally, in general I think the forced EXP share has gotten a lot of attention, but not enough attention is paid to the forced "friendship" effects in battle, such as shaking off status effects and surviving knockout blows. This is even worse for game balance imo, and makes every battle take longer to boot.
@Rob3008
I didn't ruin anything.
I just get excited with Permanent EXP Share feature.
Thanks for giving this the score it deserved!!
@RTT,
Well the Average score is still 77, so not an awful score by any means, only two 6/10 sores so far.
@Anti-Matter,
Your positive attitude towards Pokemon games will get you nowhere on here.
@Sahnec I mean there is an expectation that the remakes will be better than the games that came out over a decade ago. Even if it wasn't advertised, people have a right to complain if the game's quality isn't matching up to the generation it's adapting, especially when the previous remakes (omega ruby and alpha sapphire) contained elements of emerald within it.
@Abeedo 🤷🏻♀️ im just saying it looks great and plays great, its quite a fun game. I don’t feel as though it needs platinum features to be a great Pokemon remake, especially when we’ve had multiple videos covering the features and thats never been mentioned.
@NinTempo thanks for the advice 🙂👍
Wow a accurate Pokemon score for a change.
Forced exp share forces me not to purchase these games.
Oh well, i was looking forward to this too.
I personally will continue to get the game and I find the reasons for the cons to be pretty sad reasons. Overworld areas are not that big, you can avoid over leveling by not grinding forever, and Graphics is subjective. I enjoy the look of the game and please stop saying it looks like a mobile game people. Easily can show you mobile games that look better than switch games. Stop calling devs lazy! They should take their time making the game, but things happen and I don't blame devs for it. I will say that I am disappointed platinum content isn't in the game.
@somebread half of NL rages over a high score and the other half rages over a low score. You're seeing the latter here
Why couldnt they at the very least add all the extra content from crystal. If you own the original DS games, there's very little reason to fork out $60 for these.
@tanaka2687 it's called nominative determinism!
I REALLY hope Nintendo does better with Pokemon Legends... A delay would be quite good for it, imo!
I'm sticking with Metroid Dread as my requested Xmas game
I like this art style, I don't care for overworld spawns and complaining about overlevelling is a bit dumb when you can swap your party to a lower level team
@Mauzuri How's that boot taste
Removed - unconstructive
Don't feed the trolls, people.
@alecseus No. It's not on them. It's on those asking them to implement features. Learn how software development works.
Thanks Nintendo life, you’ve saved me £50. 😀
I didn't really expect anything different from this Pokemon hating website to be honest I am surprised they even gave it a 6. I expected a 3 for tree textures and lack of National Dex.
It was a mistake logging back in.
I'm still getting it, but I do wish EXP Share could be toggled on/off as-needed (I switched it on sometimes for ORAS to train up an egg pokemon easier) and that they included something like Mega Evolutions like in ORAS as well. I can live with all of the other "changes" or "missing content".
Though I guess for the price I'd expect a little more effort behind including new stuff.
Not sure why people dislike the art, mostly because it's just the original made in 3D (chibi overworld with normal proportions during battle). I could understand wanting something closer to SWSH for the visuals overall, but I don't think it's hurt by the art direction as-is.
Pretty short review that didn’t discuss any of the side-content or post-game. How is customization? How are Pokémon contests? How is the new post-game Park and collecting legendaries? What about the Battle Tower or online battles? Why was none of this discussed? You slandered that it cut important features from Platinum, but didn’t say which features were cut and didn’t mention what was added in as a replacement.
I agree these remakes look basic and the score is reflective of that… but this review seems a bit short and lacking some important content. You don’t like the art-style? Neat, I’m not a huge fan of it either. But like… three paragraphs dedicated to it and two other paragraphs bringing it up again? Especially when I’m curious about other features in the game?
That being said, I’m glad you did mention the game balancing. This is something that’s been plaguing Pokémon since gen 6 (although Sun/Moon and the Ultra games are outliers imo). Sword and Shield let you get fully evolved 2 and 3 stage Pokémon before the first badge AND let you load them up with some of their best moves through move tutors at the Pokémon centers. I’m glad the expanded dex is here… but I agree, having them run around in the underground at varying levels breaks the game. Why not just include them in the main gameplay so things are balanced out? Happy to hear you brought that up. And the exp. share still being forced is just ridiculous.
Overall, I’m on the fence on picking these up or not. They don’t seem bad at all and I know I’ll enjoy them due to nostalgia. But comparing these to HG/SS and OR/AS… they do seem basic and underwhelming. I didn’t intend to be mean or hate on the review, just wanted to offer some constructive criticism to make future reviews more insightful. If anything, a 6 is a fair score from what I’ve seen of these games!
The score doesn't surprise me, thats what I thought it would get honestly. Im skipping this entry because as much as the typical pokemon style works its just been done to death. Im eagerly awaiting Legends Arceus as that will move the series forward me thinks
All 60 dollar cash grab remake/reboots need to be getting such low scores and maybe we'd get new games instead of 10+ year old ones!
If Pokemon went full MMO they would easily crush WoW.
"there’s very little reason to play Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl over your original DS copies" - That's kind of the problem, it's very rare nowadays to find a copy of those games at a reasonable price (even worse if you're looking for platinium). And you need a working DS with a decent battery life.... Even if i would have loved to get remakes of the quality of HG and SS, i'm still happy to be able to enjoy gen 4 on my Switch wherever and whenever i want...
Based on everything we’ve seen, these are better than the originals in every way, and the only thing that might hold it back from being better than platinum is the BF. I really miss that feature but if someone doesn’t care for it, these could be their new favorite game from the series.
@Mauzuri expecting a little bit too much from the best-selling media franchise of all time? I'm glad you and many others will enjoy it, and if I were to get it, I would probably enjoy it to an extent too, but for a franchise as large as Pokemon, I don't think there's a way to expect 'too much' from these games.
@Boldfoxrd great choice, it's a fantastic game!
@NinjaGuy69 Have you watched ANY Pokemon videos on YouTube since 2018 or so? One-Pokemon runs are a popular way to play these games nowadays.
The only point of a Pokémon review is to find out if you hate them because they changed too much, or you hate them because they changed too little.
This game is everything that Pokémon fans have been asking for since they "ruined the series" with Sword and Shield.
Only problem is that it turns out the reason they changed so much and did away with so many old systems is that they kinda sucked and you are just remembering them too fondly.
Look forward to reading about how Arceus ruins Pokémon by getting rid of all the thing you are complaining about in this game and giving you all the things you said this game should have because that means it changes too much and isn't Pokémon any more.
@Zuljaras I totally agree with this. But I’m playing FireRed, my first Pokémon game with no exp share, and I fail to see why people say it’s harder. It’s not any more difficult than exp share on, it just makes it so I literally had to spend 5 hours grinding to beat Misty. It’s not a fun challenge, just ridiculously slow. Unless I’m missing something.
Wasn’t even worth reading after the first couple of sentences. Pokémon LGPE are a remake of Yellow, not Red and Blue.
Oh god, this comment section 🤣
Still going to give it a try.
Disappointing but at least the game isn't super broken like the three other games.
@Snaplocket Literally 90% of the people here are agreeing with the reviewer without having played the game yet, how is ANYBODY other than a few select people saying that NL is biased? Your two cents don't add up.
Another strange attempt at throwing unnecessary shade at the community and the website. I follow this site because most of the time I agree with the reviews and what the people here have to say. If you want to see biased I'm afraid you'd have to go to every single outlet that gave The Last of Us 2 a 10.
I still can't wait for it, I never got to play these games, plus I'm playing them as the game they was and not the remake, still, they made waaaay to many mistakes. This pokemon game needed that score because it does deserve it, It doesn't let you turn EXP share off.
Idk if the art style is a fair thing to score as it goes from person to person.
They could have added all the plat content but only when't with a selected few.
And the last sin, 3GB update, like what the hell.
@somebread LOL, I'm telling you look on the un-popular opinion thread, A user summed all this up LOL.
Its so funny watching all the people getting mad at the score and calling the review "bias" or "pandering to the hate crowd" cause of it LOL.
Then they keep bringing up "x point is subjective i like this", news flash, reviews themselves are subjective. What the reviewer didn't like about the game others might. This game could be an 8/10 for some people or even lower than a 6/10 for others. Thats how reviews work, crying bias and "bias", "pandering", and all those buzzwords just make you look dumb. 😂
@HeadPirate Honestly sick of this take of "Pokemon changed A and Pokemon kept B the same, so the fanbase is unpleasable". The problem is that A and B are different features and there might be good reasons to keep A and good reasons to change B, the problem is that they're picking the wrong things to change. They're removing beloved features, adding despised features, bringing back despised features, and failing to bring back beloved features, especially in terms of making the games vast, full featured experiences that provide a large quantity and variety of content. The lack of substantial content has been the common denominator in complaints over the recent Pokemon game. This game once again falls into that category despite the original being from an era that is much more beloved (although that's mainly because the standards of what's a vast, full featured experience have significantly raised from the DS to Switch, but there's even some things that the DS games did well that these games aren't doing).
@Goat_FromBOTW
The only thing you're missing is the sad truth is that for some people, it's all they have.
People are dumb and useless. I'm dumb and useless! But I can't even imagine how dumb and useless you would have to be to not just think that something you accomplished in a video game makes you special, but be so terrified to lose that validation that you try and gatekeep changes.
That's generally what is going on when people confuse difficultly (proving the Twin Prime Conjecture) with tedium (adding 2 and 2 together 30 times really fast) or something being unforgiving (answer 100 problems in a row but if you get one wrong you have to answer 200 more).
Doing something difficult is an accomplishment, and because of this confusion, there are people who actually think that in swapping out Pokémon and doing 4 times the battles to level up they are accomplishing something, and xp share is taking that life defining accomplishment away from them.
Not really surprised at this, Pokemon games have been going downhill ever since the end of Gen 5.
There are hundreds of Pokemon that need levelling and people moaning about exp share when they can just switch or remove pokemon without a pc. At this point they should just give these missguided fools what they want just to shut them up, at least they will be playing more
@Bolt_Strike
Look you can have your opinion for sure, and you don’t have to justify to me why you like or don’t like a game (in fact people would probably be way happier if they realised they also don't have to justify it to THEMSELVES. It's OK to like/dislike something just because), but you can’t pretend like “lack of substantial content” isn’t a completely meaningless and subjective statement. I thought there were tons of “substantial” changes to Sun/Moon and again to Sword/Shield, and we disagree because “substantial” here really means “things I like”.
This game is bad because it doesn’t have things I like is a valid opinion, but “they should put things I like in this game” is hardly constructive, concrete, actionable feedback. Add that to the fact that many fans are literally repeating a specific flaws as both a positive and negative, like how spawned Pokémon made Shield bad because that’s not how Pokémon works, and this game is bad because it’s random encounters which are tedious, and I think the problem is pretty self evident.
Removed - unconstructive feedback
Haven't played Pokemon since Gen 3 and never tried these, will add them to the never ending "maybe" pile
@HeadPirate No, "substantial" means more than just "I like it", it means "it has high quantity and variety of content". There's no objective standard, but there's a clear difference between some of the major sidequests of past games (like say, the Contests and Secret Bases of RSEORAS and DPPt, which are lengthy and multifaceted quests) and the newer content which is a lot of quick, shallow minigames (for example, Poke Jobs in SwSh or the changes they've made to Contests and decoration of Secret Bases in these games). There is a little bit of contradiction, there always is, but not nearly as much as you think. For the most part, there's been a relative consensus on which decisions the fanbase doesn't like and why. You just don't understand the common thread behind them.
Wah-wah ... That's disappointing, I wonder if I made a mistake selling shield a couple months after it came out and I put 40 hours into it beating the story, and have missed out on everything since then...perhaps I'll go back and play Moon on 3ds
I think one of the most frustrating things about this is that it should have been easy to give us the complete pokedex. Instead of feeling like they weren't able to add my favorite gen 5+ Pokemon, I'm left feeling like I'm not allowed to have them.
I cannot believe those in charge are unaware of the community frustration with not putting Exp Share on toggle. Like, what in honest hell is this controversy? It’s literally forced.
Won’t give us hard mode, fine… I guess, but also force super easy mode on people.
Oh man reading these comments, Pokemon fans are like star wars fans.. nothing will ever be good enough for the image in their head of what the experience should be, I personally wish Pokemon leaned away from the kidiness and went more complex rpg but than again while Pokemon is all ages its primarily for kids .. i was 10 years old when pokemon came out and while many fans are adults these days, they want these experiences to be for kids to sink their teeth into...so while people might be upset with this game we got acreaus or whatever its called coming out ina few months... And pokemon has hella replayability go back and play any of the other ones they're all pretty much the same and pretty great...
Every time I say something negative against the Pokemon the fanboys defend it an come after me, but every single time a new game comes out I'm 100% right.
Its a multi billion dollar company thats gives a $10 budget to make a game. They always go as cheap as possible and the fans eat it up and they know it.
They could make a bug filled mess and the fans would still buy it by the boat load and Nintendo/Game Freak know it. Thats why they always do the least amount of work possible for the most amount of profit.
The fans speak, it gets ignored, the fans get mad...then still buy it.
This reviewer clearly fulfilled their own prophecy: entering into the game with a negative mindset and then manifesting every single one of their personal phobias into the game proper. You should have a capacity to illustrate how the game functions without continually kicking the baseboards in the shins. At least for me it seems lopsided, but I will know more once the game is in my hands as well.
Couple of asides: I think random battles (with wild Pokemon) will always make a lot of sense for this format, and since Repels exist this was always manageable. Also I'm not sure anyone ever thought this game would slap graphically, the aesthetic was always going to skew into a more chibi style.
@moodycat They still put a newcomer on it though, so when TPC complains about the low score there's an easy scapegoat. Just joking, but I'm also dead serious.
@Kreko
You can see them well enough from the intended bird's eye view.
The problem is when they zoom right-in for reverse angle shots between characters, when the models and scenes are simply not built for them.
Yeah not good when again this site gives a low score especially to a Nintendo first party game. A 6 here is more or less a 4 elsewhere.
@OptometristLime I mean if the previews show something that's a dealbreaker for you, then exploring it in depth isn't going to do much to change your mind. I don't think it was a self-fulfilling prophecy as much as the game was never going to appeal to what they want in the first place.
And they're analyzing what they thought of the game. If they didn't like it, it's better to just be honest and say it sucks instead of giving it disingenuous praise that might convince someone the game wasn't made for to buy the game and end up hating it themselves.
I've held out on Sword and Shield, hoping GameFreak would release a higher quality main game for the Switch using their experience with S&S as a base. Unfortunately, they've handed off this game to others who seem to not have put as much new stuff in to it and don't have that past experience. Then there's Pokémon Legends Arceus which is something totally different.
I wish Pokémon had the quality consistency that Nintendo's games are known for.
@tanaka2687 What a terrible review. It just rethreads the gen consensus that has been floating around. It says at the end that it lacks Platinum Features- and it doesnt say exactly what- and I dont count that in the original you were not forced to use Exp share. This review doesnt elaborate at all on the dark world or battle colosseum. Seems like the person who wrote it obviously didnt even play it. Really TERRIBLE review! If the person writing played the past games, he/she would understand what the new players are expecting- if there are new fire types, if there are Mega evolutions, if the underground has any Pokemon not catchable in the overworld- and which are those, if there is battle colosseum, and which legendaries are catchable- and directly if we have the items in singleplayer to catch the likes of Darkrai,.....and so on, and most importantly- is Arceus catchable.......Non of these things are in this review, making me feel who are you hiring to write these reviews, that are supposed to answer these questions. Instead we get the general B.S. that any kid can just observe from the main trailers. Please we want more qualified people writing solid reviews who understand the series they talk about. THANK YOU!!!
@Bolt_Strike so you're justifying bias? It's been plain to me from reading all the prelude to this that all we would see is clown car criticism. All the comment section was lined up wanting this game to fail. It's the epitome of fanbase toxicity and it's maybe the worst in the Pokemon circles.
I would like to see a reviewer approach this with a genuine thesis seeking to be tested, and it should be able to stand on its own without the context of other Pokemon games. What if someone has never played a Pokemon series game before it would be impossible to discern anything from this review... this website demands a higher standard.
@Znake already points out everything I was aiming to say.
@Znake Don't be daft. This guys opinion was that this game was worth a 6/10 so respect that. There is no such things as an objective review. This guy writes well and just because his opinions differ to yours, doesn't mean you should call for his head. Grow up man.
Nintendo Life trying to be controversial.
I can’t wait to play it hopefully at midnight tomorrow.
The very thought of playing the second best, maybe third best Pokémon game ever but now either OLED PORTABLE or OLED TV. It’s going to be gorgeous. I just wish Nintendo supported spatial audio.
We’ve all been sampling spatial audio on our iPhones and iPads haven’t we? And our Apple TV’s. It just sounds so good watching films on the Apple TV wearing our AirPods (mine are AirPods Max, which are rare which makes my owning of two pairs ***** brilliant). Close your eyes during a static camera scene and you might as well be inside the film.
Spatial Audio is king. We all know that. We’ve all been blown away hard by it. It’s about time Nintendo joined in especially as they’ve now added Bluetooth audio support.
I know most people are experiencing this with ***** normal AirPods and it’s the Max you need for the ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE so when it comes to your annual headphone update just go right to the AirPods max.
I wear mine everywhere I go and they’re a great “chick magnet”. 1/6 people will look on enviously. It’s too good to be true and you feel like a king.
Besides they’re only £600? Looking up rent rates in London and they’re not even a full months rent. Making them easy to get if you’re there earning a normal (for most you people) wage of like 35k.
All fired up for this game. It’s gonna be excellent playing it on my TV! Every so often anyways. I prefer tabletop using a tablet grip stand or handheld.
@tanaka2687 what if the article included a tagline such as: "this reviewer was paid by Game Freak to comment on this game?" Obviously this is not the case, but its clear that bias is always something to be aware of and can certainly interfere with one's judgement. Until review scores are handed down from a divine power I think it's okay to subject them to further inspection.
Instead of day one, I'll see if my wife will grab it for me for Christmas. Still looking forward to it though
@OptometristLime Agree to disagree, mate
Do these games run at 1080p in dock mode?
@OptometristLime You really can't evaluate a game, especially a remake, in a vacuum. Video games will constantly be compared to other video games because of scarcity, developers can only make so many games, fans can only spend so much time and money on games, that they have to pick and choose which games to buy and sell. This is doubly so with a remake that is attempting to recreate an old game and add it back to circulation, comparing it with the originals gives valuable insight into whether they were justified in recreating it from scratch or if they should've just ported the originals. So no, it's totally fair that the reviewer expected more changes, saw right away that there were too few of them, and then confirmed that to be the case. Evaluating them on their own doesn't do anyone any good because it doesn't tell fans whether or not this is worth buying and it doesn't tell Game Freak and TPC whether or not they should make another game like this or something else. Comparisons are a necessary part of evaluation, it helps improve decision making on what types of games and the qualities of those games to favor.
And they did comment that if you've never played the originals, you might like it, but if you have, it's not worth it. That's all they need to say, individual gamers can apply that statement based on their own circumstances to decided for themselves whether or not to get them.
@tanaka2687 GRow up? Do you work for Nintendolife? Have you read what I said? Obviously not, because my complaint was not based on if I liked or disliked his review. It was about that none of the question that fans of the series- and players who plan on buying the game would want to know, and none were answered! If you were a fan you would understand- your complaint is too based in defending a review, that I could do without even playing the game myself, therefore what is your point by defending it? Clearly you are here to keep peace, and I am here to read a review from someone who has played the game and knows what the community needs to know to make a solid opinion whether its worth purchasing or not. None of that was here. I am sorry for expecting a generally solid review- and if you missed my point- I am not here to hear if the game is bad or good, I am hear to read about what IS IN THIS GAME! If a review lacks this info, all readers should complain, because how do we know if we might like the game, if the reviews often made today are just to fill pages and getting paid. I really hope you are not an employee of this web, because otherwise you must be on my side after reading the review and my points. Thanks
Never has the ignore button been so needed.
Wow! Minus the Nintendolife obligatory +2 for being on Switch, this is a 4. I never thought I would see such a low score for a Pokemon game. I guess even the most hardened Pokemon fan would eventually grow tired of Gamefreak's laziness.
As usual the holes of the echo chamber are sealed in by those who are resigned to the thoughts they entered with. It's okay to like or dislike a game. It's also okay to think well or negatively of a review depending on how well it caters to your needs as a consumer / curious individual. This ship sailed in with a motley collection of holes and the naysayers are there with their sticks to poke at the ensuing spectacle.
[EDIT] fun fact but as of right now the Nintendo Life review is the lowest on Metacritic... so "rofl" and "lmao" at the fake fans preaching this pablum like it's the words of life.
With the low score as well as the toxicity in the Pokemon fanbase, no wonder Pokemon hasn't been in its best lately. If not for the toxicity, I'd like to think this game could get a better rating. I think the review is a bit biased, but, agree to disagree.
If you're a big fan of Pokémon then this review won't effect you in any way as you know you will still buy the game.
After all its Pokemon
Fair points. I'll still enjoy it though. I think it's a step up in a lot of ways...and down in others.
What I don't like is the forced EXP share.
It's NL, so subtract 3 pts for it being a nintendo game. Add 1 pt for it being the holiday game this year, and 2 pts for it a cute chibi remake. So yea, it gets a 6/10 In my books 😉😏
@OptometristLime as someone who thinks 80% of the hatedom of this game was overblown: jesus christ dude it's a review, who cares
the only review that can cover every base and every viewpoint are 10 hour long youtube essays, it's not the end of the world some schmoe on nintendolife gave it a """bad""" review because it wasn't what he wanted instead of making some peer reviewed college essay assessing the faults
Kinda glad I didn't pre-order this myself. My brother in law loves Pokémon so he pre-ordered the double pack. Obviously he won't be playing both games at the same time so I'll be borrowing/playing one of the versions on Friday. If I like it then I'll buy my own copy eventually, if not then I'll use that money towards another game! C'mon Friday!
so... most of the cons only mean something to those who know a lot about Pokemon. I have never played pokemon and was considering this one as my first Pokemon game. Also I really find the Chibi art adorable. Given my lack of history, is it a good/fun game? What would be the review score as a game not compared to other pokemon games?
Usually I trust Nintendo Life reviews, but I am never quite sure what to think about reviews which do nothing but compare the game to other games in the same series. I guess that is fine for ultra fans of the series but less useful for newcomers.
@Salnax What are you talking about? The vast majority of people don't play that way and you know it. Stop boot-licking.
@HeadPirate Grinding for two hours to beat Brock and another two hours to beat Misty with only about 30 minutes of story progress and 30 minutes of catching Pokémon is tedious and obnoxious, not difficult. I can’t begin to fathom why people are so obsessed with the Exp Share and how it “ruins the series”. Now I’m just catching Pokémon as fast as I can to try to get 50 and unlock the Exp Share. It’s not worth wasting my time grinding.
No overworld spawns? Wow. I've avoided trailers to try to go in fresh but this kind of kills it for me. We've had 2 games in a row have overworld spawns. Why change it now? They better patch that in an update
@FishyS i think they mention it's worth it to newcomers
Pokemon remains the most MEH series of all time. Its been hollow and soulless for a decade. It really needs to be rebuilt from the ground up like Breath if the Wild.
@somebread I don't understand the tenor of your reply, are u offended that I have a counter viewpoint to the one expressed in the article?
@FishyS the opinion you shared is precisely the concern I have with this review. Unfortunately it seems to be very strongly skewed towards a biased Pokemon fan rather than a larger audience of consumers.
What I enjoy is that everybody wanted faithful remakes,but when they get faithful remakes, they lose their s**t. I'll still be getting pearl no matter what the review says, because I always have fun in pokemon games no matter the difficulty
@somebread Thank you, I don't think they mention newcomers exactly but I guess they do at least say the game is still enjoyable. But I feel like Nintendo Life usually rates a bit high so I am just nervous when they rate low. I am trying to decide whether to change my plans about buying this one.
@Slinkoy1 Thank you, Watch what happens when they remake Gold and silver, they will make it 3d, they wont play it safe, they will still complain.
@OptometristLime I totally understand skewing a review of a remake of a popular series towards comparisons for long time fans, I just kind of wish the review had more information for both groups. Plus I feel like the score at the end normally at least attempts to compare all games equally. Here I was unsure if it was meant as a universal-game-score or as a pokemon-game-ranking-score.
The only thing I can see myself agreeing with in this review is the Exp share being always on.
I don't mind random encounters being back for a remake of a game that had them and actually really like the graphics despite it seeming to be a major sticking point for the reviewer.
Graphics are a bummer, over world is subjectively better but kinda goes against the ‘faithful’ side of the remakes so I’m happy they are restricted to underground.
I’ve been following the leaks pretty heavily too and I gotta say I’m rather impressed with how ILCA have performed, knowing how creatively restricted they have been to deliver one of their first bigger budget games and their attention to detail is pretty great especially when it comes to trainers and their moves/ items.
Of course we could have had platinum remake and all would be well but with their time limit and what they delivered I think it’s worthwhile not being immediately dismissive of what they’ve achieved.
Well I think its safe to say gaming is dead. It has reached its peak.
Right firstly before anyone says that I don’t understand how bad some Pokemon games are well I still own Pokemon channel
That being said this reviewer is extremely new, he only joined at the end of last month
It feels like all he has done is mark the game based on what he finds negative and the first impressions he would’ve seen he didn’t like and it’s stuck with him
I have had my preorder for this back when it was announced as I love the art style as it’s like my DS which I played loads, in fact I did a journey from Wolverhampton to Norwich to get Darkrai as a Woolworths in Stoke had let me down, Nintendo sent me some cards to apologise
Anyway I think treat this review with your wallet, if you don’t like it then don’t buy it, this score is that of the experience that this certain newbie reviewer had got and his experience wasn’t great
If you are on the fence then it’s worth a purchase or if you know someone then watch them play it
Yes the Exp share being on all the time is rough but does the reviewer of Lets go tell us that if we had a Pokeball plus we could max out our partners stats within a few days just for going out with it?
Oh and then there’s sword and shield, I love them but I wasn’t a fan of the overpowered candies where you could max out levels very easily
Finally this is a game based on the love people had for the original
Would people seriously complain about Mario 3D all stars because those games are the exact same with anew lock of paint
@The__Goomba Agreed, I love the art. People seem to either like it or hate it.
@Matthew90 What?
@wolvesboy I knew I haven't seen them around before.
@wolvesboy "extremely new" in what sense? because if you mean writing reviews/games critique, that's patently false, but if you mean for this site specifically, yes
he's not even new to reviewing switch games; https://overlode.co.uk/author/overlodeuk/
i'm actually appalled at the assertion that this guy is a "newbie" just because he's written a handful of reviews for NintendoLife--how hard is it to search up an author's name? like 60% of the contributors to this site are freelancers who write for all sorts of things
@somebread yes I meant new to writing for NintendoLife, he may have had previous experience elsewhere and he may be absolutely awesome at his job, but to score a game from an extremely popular franchise and then to score it like he has because he didn’t like how it looks is a bit if an odd one
Games are meant to be enjoyable, fun, yes some are prettier than others but you could have the best looking game in the world but if it plays terribly then it would make no use
And plus what if this game gets any post launch content?
Look at how many people complained about Animal crossing missing content when it first released
This has to be one of the worst reviews I've ever read on this site for a major release and not cos of the score.
Dude spends half of it moaning about the artstyle being awful which is really subjective and and random encounters in a remake of a game that had them.
Only valid point is the exp share.
@wolvesboy i enjoy the art style but it's not unfair to say it's a "different strokes" thing--some people will like it, some won't, and that can make or break a game for people; it's a subjective thing, like literally anything else in a review (hell, we've had games on here that get points for looking nice but dock points because they play like garbage--the scale goes both ways)
either way, the popularity of the franchise is irrelevant
i think the general consensus on games releasing in a poor state but getting post-launch content is that it doesn't make them a good game, in fact, it makes the poor state of launch even more egregious
@johnvboy
Don't mind them.
As long the game is still playable, that's more than enough.
@mariopartyfan68
Eh.... I like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Planet Coaster on PS5 despite i still haven't get the game and the machine yet. 🙂
I will try to get those two games on next year.
Pokémon has always been easy and I doubt that will drastically change because the series are designed for children. Even without the exp. share, the game will be a cake walk for most experienced RPG players. If you want more depth and challenge in your RPGs, Pokémon is not it (online competitive is a different story).
I’m picking this one up. It’ll be a nice comfy playthrough with family.
Oh man, I wish you didn't say everyone looks like Funko Pops.
I hate those damn things and now it's all I'll think about.
@frogopus Should I post the photo or you.
Sounds like the review is spot on, congrats to the reviewer.
Making a remaster of an old Nintendo DS game with less features and asking for more money than the original deserves no more than the score given.
@mariomaster96 I had to use this to understand your comment, that is interesting but... FRGL HGSS 😅.
<a class="external" href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_(video_game_series">https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_(video_game_series)</a>
Sorry, but I love the artstyle. The fact that its replicating the DS graphics is really cool, and I wish more people could see it that way. This is probably going to be the last game we get in that style unless Black and White remakes happen, and they do the same thing. Appreciate it while you can.
@Boldfoxrd same. In fact I have enough eshop funds in my account to buy Metroid Dread. Will probably get it on November 19th
Sounds like if you have never played the originals (like me) you can add a 3 to this score. Graphics look great to me, I don't care for if they're a downgrade on the originals, I have no memory or sentiment attached to them.
I was gonna wait for Legends: Arceus to get back into Pokémon anyways. Was thinking I’d try Sword and Shield but I’ll just keep waiting and be freshly reinvigorated with Poké joy.
@HarvestGoddess Exactly!
Still going to get it and thoroughly enjoy it. Just like I did with the original games, fourteen years ago. ^_^
And stop hating on the art style. If Diamond and Pearl looked like this back in 2007, people would be drooling over it.
I had one of these on the DS back in the day and never even came close to finishing it. I just never really played it at the time. So, I am getting both and will dig into both now and do what I should have done many years ago on the DS. Plus, I have kids now that were not born when the originals were released. Many good reasons to buy these and play through them. Another reason, there was no Pokemon Bank or Home with the DS.
My head literally hurts that people don't understand that not wanting an RPG where you literally destroy encounters without effort instantly means you want to be 'grind'.
You never had to grind in the older games, they weren't that hard either, but they at least required something reassembling a cognitive process to finish.
As in, you don't need to be 10 levels above your opponent to win a fight. You don't even need to be at your opponent's level to stand a chance. I beat Pokemon Red with Pokemon 15 levels below the champion's Pokemon.
People who hate forced EXP share don't want to 'Grind', quite the opposite, they want to use decision making to determine the outcome of battles rather than RAW levels. The fact anyone thinks this isn't the case proves they aren't comfortable digging into the games mechanics any more than that, which is fine, but at least make that an option.
Brilliant? Pshh hardly. Diamond? Yeah right.. And shining? False advertising from GF once again.....
All the people in here saying that they're disappointed in the games but still going to get them... You're part of the reason why we don't get good Pokemon games anymore.
Good review though, my mind was made up about not getting these after the leaks showed next to no new content. A huge disappointment compared to the prior Pokemon remakes, these games do not do Sinnoh justice.
@Gumbo1995
Can i help you ? 🙃
@HarvestGoddess

I like the Chibi style from Pokemon BDSP.
Cyrus looks adorable in Chibi style even he is a villain. 😚
Also, i love the positivity here. 👍
Guess Arceus will be worth the wait.
You guys don't have to get out a review so early , maybe take your time?
@Anti-Matter I think the reason why you're annoying everyone is the fact that everything you say is "me, me, me". It's what you want and it seems like you could care less about anyone else's experiences.
Is basic empathy, understanding and the acknowledgement of others' concerns really that difficult? Like, literally everyone is happy that you enjoy the game, but - if you can't understand or acknowledge the reasons for why others wouldn't - then why even bother having a conversation?
We get it that you like Permanent EXP Share and believe that everyone should be like you and just enjoy the game as it is and accept all of developer's decisions - like, we got it the first 25 times you said it.
It's the fact that you keep repeating yourself in an incredibly self-centered sort way that is rubbing people the wrong way. It's just really strange (but - then again - maybe you really are just doing it on purpose. I dunno.)
Anyway - shifting gears now - I obviously believe that more options are never a bad thing. It is pretty much always a net positive. And as for the topic of random battles - I actually prefer the surprise aspect of pokemon being concealed until a battle begins over seeing them in the overworld. But maybe that's because I'm a 38 year old, old school gamer who's overly set in his ways haha.
@everynowandben relatable
Looks like NL is trying to get hits from the Pokemon Haters gym lol
@Andy_Witmyer
"Why you keep it entirely about yourself without having actual discussions with others"
I have no idea about Pokemon games on older machines.
I have never played them before so i have zero knowledge about everything from older Pokemon games.
Also, i'm not a diehard Pokemon games so i play their games casually without even thinking the complex features from the previous games since i have never knew them.
Why did i get excited with Permanent EXP share ? Because as casual gamer who don't play Pokemon games very frequently, by given Permanent EXP Share like i have ever experinced from Yokai Watch games on 3DS, i thought it was a great feature to make the game less grindy and quickly leveling up. But at the same time i didn't really understand about peoples keep getting upset by no option to turn off permanent exp share, i mean if i happy with that decision why i didn't allow to feel happy with that decision ?
I just felt excited with less grindy from permanent exp share while other peoples were looking at me with unhappy face.
I didn't mean to rub someone in wrong way.
Also, I don't play Pokemon games with style like most people here, i have no idea about the Elites, the exclusive features from older Pokemon games, the event Pokemons, etc.
Honestly I always liked the random Pokemon grass encounters. I thought it made it more exciting who you'll try to capture.
"... upcoming open-world-like..."
What exactly is an open-world-like game? It feels like it means "not open world gane at all but we thought it might be for a while"...
Not that Arceus needs to be open world. I'm not of the school of thought that open world immediately means good or better. It's just one way for a game to be.
@Lyricana Probably means its just going to be a bunch of wild areas.
@Andy_Witmyer Ah, first time talking to em?
The art style looks fine to me, seeing as they had to maintain the grid-like map from Gen 4, and I play with Exp Share on, anyway. The lack of Platinum content is disappointing (although expected), but since I didn't play Gen 4 the first time around, the lack of HMs are reason enough for me to eventually get one of these games over a used copy of "Platinum." Add to future Wishlist...
I fully understand that these remakes are otherwise disappointing to multiple groups of potential players, though.
Guess it was as unambitious as it looked. I don't know any Pokémon players who are picking this up and I can't say I blame them, I would probably rather just play my original copy of Diamond. A real shame, but at least we have Legends Arceus to look forward to
Never played Diamond/Pearl but I guess there's no point in starting now then.
@Sahnec If that's what you feel then go for it. There are just a lot of people who feel like the game looks lacklustre, especially for the price point. Considering how the remake costs at least 15 dollars more than the originals, it's reasonable that some fans would expect more than what they see as the bare minimum.
All these people complaining about Exp. Share baffle me. This was my favorite thing about Sword and Shield. There are almost 900 pokemon, CREATE A FEW DIFFERENT TEAMS INSTEAD OF OBSESSING OVER JUST 6 THE ENTIRE GAME!
Yeah it seems too easy if you only have 6 pokemon and just focus on those the entire game, you'll easily have a bunch of Level 100 pokemon. I actually like to create various teams and level up a lot of pokemon so the permanent exp. share never bothered me and it made raising more than just 6 pokemon so, so much less of a hassle.
Play the game how you want but if you're whining about permanent exp. share you must already be having the most boring pokemon experience ever just focusing on a small handful of pokemon.
I don't regret pre-ordering since I never officially got to play Diamond or Pearl on an actual DS but I do wish these were $49 games instead of $59 games considering how little was apparently innovated. I'm sure it will be better than Paper Mario Origami King—I will always regret throwing money away on that insipid pile of garbage.
What is it that some of the pro exp share people don't understand about why we don't want it on all the time?
Like people have said, it makes the game too easy, causes pokemon we don't want levelled up to get stronger, affects ev training and doesn't fit with the original feel for the game.
If you are happy with exp share, that's brilliant but its pretty obvious why a lot of us don't want it forced on us.
Based on what we've seen so far, this seems like a well-rounded review.
I've noticed too many reviews recently where the body of the review and the pros & cons seem to point to a negative game, but then the score is strangely high. 6/10 seems more than fair here, how there are comments complaining when people haven't played it yet I don't know.
@sagebrushfire read Andy_Witmyer's reply. It perfectly responds to comments like yours
@Anti-Matter,
The game will end up on 77-80 as a review score, and millions will buy it and enjoy the game, oblivious to all the outrage on niche gaming sites, just like normal then.
@sagebrushfire its not going to bother me to much but dude, come on, Not everyone has to like it at all, People like grinding it out, some people like Making it harder, its fine if you like it, But It should never be forced on us, and then act like its just, "Whatever to bad so sad, I love it" because if it was the other way around oooooooo, Would you hear about it.
I mean like I said, I don't have to big a deal because I heard this version is harder, But I still don't think it would have been hard to turn it off at all, Like, At all.
@Savage_Joe,
Or just understand that beyond the core internet minorities nobody cares, as they simply enjoy games for what they do contain, not what they do not.
Like people do with most things they buy.
Why do you keep saying that this new remake is "adding" a chibi art style, when this game was already originally in chibi art style since the very DS original version? They cannot add an art style that was not missing in the first place, they simply decided to keep the original art style and remake it into 3D so it will look more modern in order to be more accurate to the original game experience of the original versions. (I do understand why some people would feel butthurt about this decision)
Leaving out the Platinum stuff is disappointing, specifically if their intentions is to make it into some kind of "Platinum expansion DLC" or something of the sort.
@InkIdols yeah, same.
This said the Polygon review seem to put a good case as for why this might still be pretty good. The way they word it(especially compared to mechanics of "modern" titles), this is very much sounding like the pokemon game i'd been looking for in a long while.
https://www.polygon.com/reviews/22785807/pokemon-brilliant-diamond-shining-pearl-review-nintendo-switch
@Chibi_Manny in hindsight I wouldn't be surprised if Platinum was a DLC.
And I mean, wasnt it what it was in a way originally? A glorified physical DLC sold as a full priced game?
(This said I'd find interesting if an hypothetical Playinum DLC added the distortion world as a mechanic akin to Mirage caves or ultra space to add the rest, or at least more, of the national dex which may be a good way to alleviate the cost of such a DLC if it's on the pricier end)
@Ludovsky Yeah, i'm feeling better about these games now
@johnvboy and honestly I was looking at other reviews and Polygon of all places made a very strong case as to why this might be THE pokémon game I had been looking for a long while going back to "Pokemon without the superfluous mechanics that only serve as spectacle".
Like as a player of the original first gen on gameboy who then lapsed on(going in a phase of not wanting to admit looking games that could be seen as "childish" ) I only resumed playing with XY and while I liked the games, mega-evolution rubbed me the wrong way a bit. And then i played ORAS(because, again, i'd missed the entirety of gen 2-5) and it just felt... really out of place even as someone who had never played the original gen3??
Like i'll admit that even when i "defended" Dynamax in the past one of the core aspects that I "liked" about it was it existing ONLY in gym battles mostly. One of my biggest gripe about Sword and Shield over time though was how little the was outside the gyms and thus boite multiplayer-focused the postgame was which as a singleplayer focused player I oft grated against :/
So like for all the criticism i'm reading from folks, these remakes still sound like what(and I expect others) i'd been waiting for since a while.
I don't get the hate on "random pokemon encounters" when that's how it all started. I'm glad it's random because catching the one you want is more rewarding. Also exp sharee is good for me because i don't have time to grind my pokemon to level 100. I do think there should be an option to turn it off though for people that play a lot.
@UglyCasanova unfortunately it's a lose lose situation. They make originals and people complain it's not like they used to be (sword and shield for example) and if they remake games, people say they need new ideas. Games are like phones, they sell because they have a popular name even if the product is awful.
@Anti-Matter In your response to me, you referred to yourself in the first person 15 times.
The number of times that you used 2nd person pronouns (ie "you", "your", "you all", etc): 0
The number of times to you referred to anyone else in the comments section using 3rd person pronouns (ie "he/her","they", "them", "their", etc): 0.
I suppose that in one small line, your did use the (somewhat vague and detached) "someone" to refer to the people you've rubbed the wrong way, so I suppose the argument could be made for 1. Of course, it was one word in a sea of repetitive "me, me, me" "I, I, I" nonsense, so...it seems pretty inconsequential.
I'm not going to spend time addressing anything else you wrote bc you've literally written the nearly the same exact things about 20 times already. I honestly can't tell if you're maybe just a child, or if you're just an uber fanboy /apologist for Nintendo, or both. You could also be a troll, or all three of those things.
@snatcher Directly? Yeah. I've been noticing his comments for awhile, this is just the first time I decided to wade into it (mostly out of boredom, admittedly).
@savage_joe Thanks - I appreciate the endorsement haha.
Anyway, carry on!
@Anti-Matter Hardcore? Wtf? Pokemon games have always been some of the easiest RPGs out there since Red/Blue.
@Kreko Style preferences apart, it just looks amateur and poorly done. Compare it to new Link's Awakening or Animal Crossing.
No overworld spawns? No buy. That was one of the few mechanics that made these games somewhat modernized. Pokemon company is ran by dummies 🤣
NAHH, I'm buying day 1. D&P is what got me into the franchise. I miss the top down adventure chibi look anyway. I do miss the pixel era of Pokemon games though.
@sagebrushfire Dude, not everyone plays like you. If you wanna build 99 different teams with the exp. share on, be my guest, but I don't wanna switch every single time, because GF decided to be freakin lazy and NOT code A SINGLE ITEM PROPERLY. A SINGLE ITEM.
The solution would be for you and I to be able to play our own style, not just you.
Masuda has been quoted many times in interviews that this is always done intentionally, and moving forward, this will be the status quo. Being overleveled and plowing through the game mindlessly.
What you call whining is the fans telling them to getta grip and do their job properly. It isn't that hard. Especially for a multi-million dollar company.
@Andy_Witmyer I think it's perfectly fine to have options and I do agree that a toggle would be better BUT the whining isn't really necessary because it's more about people not liking that it's different than suffering some kind of actual injustice. I've been playing these games since 1996, I can empathize with being uncomfortable with change. If this game follows the QoL changes made in Sword and Shield, Exp. Share being permanent really should not be an issue for anyone because we have instant access to boxes at any time. You don't have to wander around with a full team of 6 pokemon so if you don't like Exp. Share, your recourse is to simply walk around with only the pokemon you want to get experience—it's quick and easy to swap others back in when you need them.
Obviously the design team decided that the benefit of programming Exp. Share as optional did not outweigh the cost. It's foolish to assume it would be something extremely easy without knowing how the experience system works in the first place. Even something as simple as changing a line of dialogue has some kind of production cost and Pokemon is known for being a nightmare of spaghetti code because of how surprisingly complex the battle system is (abilities, held items, weather and status effects have a tremendous impact on calculating what happens during a single turn of combat).
I'm only replying because someone suggested that I read your comment since it was a "perfect" response to comments "like mine" but I still disagree.
@FRANKLIN_BADGE For one, I don't even think GameFreak is on this project, it's a company called ILCA with "oversight" from GameFreak. For two, you have no idea if they're being "lazy" or not. Every change has some type of production cost. I've been a software developer for almost 10 years; it is far more likely that the cost of making a certain change simply outweighs the benefit (e.g. it won't hurt sales but it will require X amount of hours to implement so it's not worth it).
I literally said "play how you want", I don't expect everyone to play like me but I am encouraging people to think outside of the tiny box they seem to be stuck in since 1996. I have played every canon pokemon game since I got Pokemon Blue and Red on my Gameboy back in 1997 and I have learned to embrace change when it comes because it's pretty rare in this franchise.
Also it's clear you have very little insight into the production of pokemon games in general. A single item can be a huge deal in this game because the battle system is ridiculously complex. Weather, items, abilities and status effects all have huge impacts on calculating what happens on a single turn, not to mention secondary effects, critical hits, terrain, field effects, hazards... from a programming standpoint it's a nightmare. Lookup Pokemon Showdown, it's open source and you can see just how crazy the code is—and that's not even official, they're fixing bugs all the time to try and match the main games.
@Ludovsky,
Great post, and I feel you have hit the proverbial nail right on it's head.
@Meteoroid Yes, that's why I said "This style" of chibi art doesn't work in 3D. There are plenty of great examples of chibi art in 3D that is excellent.
@Anti-Matter Sweet, sweet child.
facepalm
@Andy_Witmyer
What do you mean i am a troll or an uber apologist ? 🤨
I have different life experience in gaming and living with Pokemon franchise.
I have never played the first Pokemon game on Gameboy and other machines until Pokemon X was the first game i played in year 2013 and i have zero everything about Pokemon games.
About saying all my comments was about me and myself, i addresed to other peoples that i was excited with Permanent EXP share since i played my Pokemon games i have casually since from year 2013, didn't even think about the complexity in Pokemon games. Is that wrong if i get excited by permanent exp share ?
Also, i am Indonesian people, English is not my mother tongue so pardon of my terrible English. And i am 37 years old man.
@PaquitoChocolate
I have never played Pokemon Red / Blue.
I have no idea about that game.
@whereswarren
Can i help you ?
@Andy_Witmyer Fun fact, he did it again.
@sagebrushfire Dude, you basically whined about everyone else complaining about the exp. share, an item that was so easily done/coded in a Gen II GBC game.
You are basically saying: "CaNNot ChANGe EXp. SHAre. ToO hard. DEal wiTh iT" That is not a valid counterpoint to my original one, being, as it is currently coded, it is a useless/intrusive item for people like me, who want to play the game with a single party of 6, as opposed to 99 teams of different pokes.
Also, you say that coding it differently would ruin/break the game itself. NOT TRUE AT ALL. There had been countless poketubers who had basically shown concrete evidence that fixing such things doesn't take that much time nor effort. It can be done in an afternoon. And those are guys on their spare time, imagine what thousands of employees under a multi-millionaire corporation could achieve if they decided to fix those things.
It doesn't matter if it is GF or Nintendo or any other studio developing the game. The point remains that GF allowed this game to be developed and when it came back to them, they were like YUP, GOOD ENOUGH and decided to publish it
And while I am not a developer myself, I possess common sense. You are talking about Pokemon showdown, a game I am very familiar with, but once again, we are talking about apples and oranges here. You mention a fan-made game as opposed to games being developed/published by a multi-million dollar company.
'Nuff said.
Ok this is very tangential about the article itself but two things:
Up to 78 now on Metacritic, which seems a much fairer reflection of the game to me.
@Matthew90 the game is not dead it's going to sell really well and I'm buying it on the eshop
@johnvboy not at all it's going to sell like hot cakes
The review should have a 9 instead of a 6
@sagebrushfire you said "You don't have to wander around with a full team of 6 pokemon so if you don't like Exp. Share, your recourse is to simply walk around with only the pokemon you want to get experience—it's quick and easy to swap others back in when you need them."
It's not that simple. Let's say I want to beat Cynthia. I can't beat her with only pokémon, because she is difficult. However, if I bring all my team with me, I'll be having all of them levelling up against my will - and that applies not only against Cynthia but in every case. Everytime I battle a trainer, I can only have a team of only 1 pokémon and beat all of their team with a single pokemon and I cannot change pokemon. This is very not convenient, can't you see that?
As someone than didn't play diamond or pearl before... Only an hour in and totally disagree with the score already, this game is way better than sword and shield.
It's so refreshing to read an honest review of a Pokemon game.
This may be greatest review for me this website has ever given due to the fact that the reviewer pointed out a factor that no other reviewer had the balls to mention (probably were paid off): The art style. It is an absolute shame how Nintendo remakes an original $30 DS game, slaps an art style on it that is used in the cheapest of JavaScript internet baby games and far inferior to the art of the original, and gives it a $60 price tag.
Changing the art style does not always work out. While I was dead set against the art chosen in Link's Awakening on Switch, it worked decently well due to matching the dreamworld element. However, I never saw Diamond and Pearl as a kiddy game, and its tone just felt catered toward the core audience rather than children. Epic moments with epic characters now look cheap. Imagine if Disney recreated A Goofy Movie and gave it the art style of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: All the epic moments would be lost due to everything catering to the appeal of a toddler.
Pokemon has been gradually catering towards toddlers since Pokemon Go's success, and this game strongly inforces it by holding your hand with the forced always-on EXP share. I cannot imagine anyone defending a 2021 Pokemon game that literally took out overworld roaming Pokemon: This is also a trend that Game freak has been following in laziness. It's hard to believe that this is the same company that jame packed Black and White 2 to the brim with content. I suppose it's par for the course, as their parent company Nintendo has become a lazy, money hungry corporation that gives little attention to it's fans in-trade for cheap cash grabs that sell like hotcakes.
Anyone out there who owned the originals and wants to go back: Download a DS emulator on your phone and get the ROM. If you didn't own it, buy a cheap DS and a used copy, because this, like the N64 titles on Switch, is the absolute worst way to experience what are some of the best Pokemon titles ever made.
@luckiernut Then you missed out. The originals on DS were leaps and bounds superior. This is like the Pokemon Let's Go version of this game: It's designed for kindergarteners to beat the Elite 4 and complete disregards the original core fans.
@NovaCam I know many people who believe that HG/SS were the last great Pokemon games, and the best ones ever made for that matter. Yes, it is generally viewed as the best Pokemon DS game. Mine, personally, was B/W2.
Okay, so if this game, which is a rennovated straight remake of diamond/pearl, is a 6 out of 10, all I'm going to say is that X, Y, Sun, Moon, Shield, and Sword, better all be sub 6/10's...because diamond and pearl are both vastly superior to those other games, even without platinum.
To each his own opinion and all, but this reviewers opinion is so baffling to me I think I'll just stick to my own....
I started playing early this morning after the unlock in the AU region (I'm in NZ). I only played for an hour, and have not returned after about 12 hours. I feel a deep sense of ennui after experiencing the ***** overworld graphics, poor analogue movement control, and realising the blasted XP share is both party-wide and forced on with zero choice.
@liathwulf Except it isn't a straight remake. The overworld graphics are bad, and the XP share is forced on with zero choice. Plus there's no Platinum content.
@Gloogo,
So basically if a Pokemon game review score is low it's to be trusted, but not the other way round.
Sounds totally reasonable to me.
a realistic score for a pokemon game? who would've thought
@Snoober What the heck are you talking about man?
I can fully respect and understand people don't like the Chibi art style and that is fine!
But to say this game is inferior to the originals makes no sense whatsoever!
If there is one thing this game has, is that its practically a straight up remake of the original. The only thing different in this game is the Chibi artstyle in overworld and permanent EXP share. Everything else is exactly like the original!
The Pokemon Lets Go games actually did have a lot more changes to the originals it were based on.
My only major gripe I have myself with these games that it was a baffling decision and missed opportunity to not include the Platinum content.
@johnvboy I mean it's not like it's an incredibly low score. Most reviewers just tend to completely ignore a game's flaws or are overly critical about everything based on preconceived opinions the franchise.
I think it's refreshing not because it's a low score, but because he acknowledges that it's a decent game but isn't ignoring the issues. Seems rare in this community.
@Gloogo,
The NL review just seem to be out of touch with the other reviews, and seems pretty lazy to be honest, just my opinion though.
@johnvboy you said: "The NL review just seem to be out of touch with the other reviews, and seems pretty lazy to be honest, just my opinion though."
This is called "opinion". Everyone is entitled to have one. If you disagree, that's fine. I kinda fail to see your logic here. So if a game has average score of, let's say 70, then every review should be around 70 and reviews with a score of 40 or 100 are invalid?? No game will not have scores very deviant from the average. If a game has average score of 5, there's gonna be 3's and there's gonna be 8's, even if not majority
By the way, according to metacritic there were more 6's out of 10, like from MetroGameCentral.
A quotation of a review by ArsTechnica, which doesn't provide scores for games: "Ars TechnicaNov 17, 2021
No doubt these will sell well regardless of what I say, but if you're not already dying to play these, I would save the $60 for Pokémon Legends: Arceus, due out in January."
Review in progress by Stevivor (also not scored): "StevivorNov 17, 2021
Visually, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl delivers a mixed bag. As a full remake, expectations are high, and we know Game Freak has ambitions to further the Pokémon style guide with Legends Arceus in January. However, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl go the other way. Following the more immersive 3D style of Pokémon Sword and Shield, the Diamond and Pearl remakes regress to the traditional vantage point, and are more akin to the 3DS games, only in high definition, at least while exploring the world. Battles aside, it feels more like a DS to 3DS game, only crisper, rather than a DS to Switch remake. "
@johnvboy you said "So basically if a Pokemon game review score is low it's to be trusted, but not the other way round."
And you follow the opposite logic: if a pokémon game review score is high, it's to be trusted, but not the other way around"
You were here defeding the game you hadn't played, from a reviewer who DID play the game.
@marcel1_1 What you're saying makes no sense. If you can't beat Cynthia with 1 pokemon then you're using the other pokemon you bring so wouldn't they be getting experience anyway? How are they leveling up "against your will"? How do YOU not understand that? If you don't want a pokemon to level up, don't bring it. If you need it, then it was going to gain experience anyway.
@marcel1_1,
No I was saying some people on here only trust the negative reviews, and this game so far has more positive than negative.
@FRANKLIN_BADGE Do yo often reply to people with inane babbling and then just seal it with a "nuff said"—as if you made some logical point—and call it a day?
Okay, you've changed my mind, you must be right because you said, "'nuff said", obviously a decade of software engineering experience is no comparison to some pokemon youtubers and your personal feelings. eyeroll
The hilarious part is you talking about different generations of pokemon games and then trying to call me out for an apples-to-oranges comparison. Pokemon Showdown has more in common with Gen 8 than Gen 8 does with Gens 1-6. The architecture is completely and utterly different and they might as well exist in a different universe.
And I'm NOT saying it's "too hard" to fix. That's where you're just ignoring what I'm actually saying and clapping back with an asinine strawman that you've figuratively pulled out of your butt. I very specifically said that the cost wasn't worth the benefit. It could be the easiest thing in the world for all we know, the point is that whatever effort it requires was not deemed to be worth the benefit or detriment it would create. It's called return on investment. It could be that someone in management just really likes Exp. Share and convincing them otherwise is a waste of time or it could be that they did some testing/polling and more people like Exp. Share than dislike it—the point is that someone deemed permanent Exp. Share to be more valuable than alternatives, likely because there was an existing code base and the cost (the COST, NOT THE DIFFICULTY) of changing it wasn't worth the benefit.
@sagebrushfire you still don't get it?? If I bring 6 pokémon with me to battle Cynthia, EVERY pokémon in my team is getting leveled up when I beat the current pokémon she's using in battle, not just the pokémon of my team that beat her pokémon (like in previous games). Every pokémon of mine is getting a ***** ton of exp. from her strong pokémon that fainted, thus making the game too easy. I DON'T WANT that to happen!
Sharp? i just installed it and the game looks 720p or atleast sub 1080p docked. i have a 1080p screen and the game is blurry and pixelated as f***
@sagebrushfire And do you often reply to people with fancy words like inane to sound smarter than you are? Anyone can Google some fancy words on Lexico. Look how flabbergasted and taken aback I am at your impressive lustrous response.
You also keep saying I keep pulling things out of my butt and I say right back at ya. You ignored the fact that people like me literally cannot enjoy the games as is, being super easy mode with the thing on, but before you said that you weren't whining about people complaining about this fact. You have fun building 99 teams, but not everyone has the time nor patience for that. Some people want to play as they were intended originally, with a party of 6 or even 9, if you wanna keep switching some members every now and then. No more no less, people like me aren't asking for a miracle here. JUST THE OPTION TO TURN IT OFF and decent difficulty.
Anyway, back to your other point. It MIGHT BE the cost what you keep yapping about, but you also wisely choose to ignore my main gripe about it. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR COMPANY. A company that is almost toe to toe with the Disney company here when it comes to IP and revenue. You can defend GF all you want and keep saying "It ain't cost effective", cost effective for you maybe, but GF can easily fix this if they wanted too with no big losses whatsoever.
I dunno what planet you are from that a simple update for one single item costs a billion dollars.
You are basically defending YOUR own playstyle, while completely ignoring that tonnes of people have been asking GF over the years to make the damn thing optional for a more old school and balanced gameplay.
You make it seem like we are asking for GF to open Pokemon centres all over the world sigh
@Mauzuri I guess to each their own but paying $60 for a lazy remake is offputting to me. I expecter ORAS level quality at least.
@FRANKLIN_BADGE Watch them put it in an update in like 5 months from now when no one remembers the game LOL.
I'm gonna have to disagree with the score here. I'm gonna have to disagree with the some of the cons from the written review. I feel like the Chibi art style is more of a personal negative than it is a widespread amongst all Pokemon fans. Cause it's clear there are fans of the art style being brought to life in 3D.
As for the lack of Platinum content this should've been expected as the trailers started coming out closer to the game's release cause the game's are exactly what they say Brilliant "Diamond" and Shining "Pearl" so it feels like you were set up for disappointment from the start. This is in no way me defending GameFreak or the company that had make this game but obviously they played it safe cause of all the uproar that had happened in the past with Sword and Shield all the way through its DLC development.
This review to me at least feels a little flawed since a majority of the cons can be easily counter-argued minus the overleveling. And hey if you still feel the same way about the game then hey more power to you it's just i think this a game that is getting overhated in the same way that Sword and Shield got when they first came out.
@RupeeClock I mean I'd be more understanding of the score but the cons to me feel like they are easily argued and the review comes off as flawed being unable to justify the 6/10 rating. It feels like he spends a majority of the review complaining about the art style, which fair enough i know is not for everyone but still.
I get the feeling they are just gonna sell expansion pass later on to add missing features and new pokemon just like they did with Sw/Sh. They Tasted how well the expansion pass made em extra money for cutting the dex but adding back pokemon so easily with a patch even if you don't own the expansion pass.
Let's not forget even Let's Go had a physical DLC with Mew. We are now in the era of poor unfinished games that will just get patched up with DLCs at a later date.
And from what I saw the only game they can trade with other than themselves will be Legends Arceus until the update for Pokemon HOME, so they might even do some event where you need to transfer a pokemon from those remakes to Legends Arceus to get some new Pokemon Form or something similar.
Geez guys.. grow up and stop whining. It is the exact same game plus some extra stuff. In other words: You're basically saying the OG games were trash.
@Mia101 It's not with extra stuff. It actually CUTS content compared to Platinum, like the distortion world, no Battle Frontier, etc.
The additions are minor tweaks and doesn't compare to what was cut, expanded underground area and pokémon following you (big nothing)
And to make matters worse, there is OBLIGATORY exp. share for all, which cannot be turned off and makes the game too easy.
@marcel1_1 because it's not a remake of platinum which makes it not a valid argument..
And about the exp share, just switch out your entire team after every arena and you're good. Don't use any items during battle, don't use pokemon with a type advantage, etc. There's so much you can do to make it more challenging if you want or don't buy the games at all.
@Mia101 Heartgold and SoulSilver were not remakes of Crystal, but they had Crystal content (for example with the addition of Suicune storyline). All previous remakes had more content than the third version of the originals, except this one.
Switching out the entire team after every arena is not a very convenient thing to do. It wouldn't take them (developers) too much work to add the option of turning off the exp. share, but they didn't do it.
Don't tell me to adjust the difficulty myself. Following your logic, there's no such thing as a game too easy and it will never be a flaw of any game, you can always make the game more difficult yourself by playing with one hand, playing blinfolded, etc. No game review should ever subtract points from a game if it's too easy
I want the well balanced experience of the originals. They put the right amount of items in the right places to make the difficulty balanced. It was all well-thought process from the original developers (the amount of exp you get from every battle, the amount of potions you can get in the environment, etc), so you can use the items and play with the right amount of challenge. ILCA didn't think about that and just kept the pokemon of other trainers you battle with in the same level, even though you get a lot more of experience now.
@marcel1_1 Please, as if the old Pokemon games were ever challenging .. I played red when I was 7 and had no trouble at all lol. Leveling up was just more time consuming and that was always annoying.
And I do switch out my entire game after every arena, because idk if it is "inconvenient". It's fun and that's why I do it
@Mia101 The old pokémon were WAY more challenging than the current games. This is unquestionable. Beating the first gym (Brock) if you chose Charmander demanded a lot of strategy in pokémon red.
"Leveling up was just more time consuming and that was always annoying."
But it's not only about leveling up. There are things called EV and IV training, that competitive trainers care about. The final stats of your pokemon depend on what pokemon you beat. That counts a lot for competitive players. And the exp. share for all kinda "breaks" this training. You must be a casual player so you don't care. But you should know some people do.
"And I do switch out my entire game after every arena, because idk if it is "inconvenient". It's fun and that's why I do it"
Good for you if you like that. But you should know not everyone is you and not everyone adopts this practice. So you should be more empathetic instead of telling people to "stop whining" just because the changes made are positive for you (but not for most people)
Color me surprised. A site that gave Pokemon the score a deserves. Looks like a few of the commenters don't agree with the score though
@Anti-Matter Um, you realize they could've simply gave an option for those who didn't want it, right?
@Anti-Matter Oh nvm, people already bashed you in the comments lmao
@MrSylveon
Peoples keep wishing for option to turn off exp share but alas ILCA as the developer didn't give that option and there is nothing we can do.
Getting upset and being salty about the game will not change the thing, so just move on and play the game.
@marcel1_1
You know, i played some Pokemon games casually.
I don't need some unnecessary challenges like from older games since i don't play my Pokemon games frequently.
@Anti-Matter you said it correctly: YOU don't need it. Which doesn't mean OTHER people don't need it. That's why you people should have more empathy instead of saying "stop whining", try to put yourself in other people's shoes. That's called empathy.
You are entitled to like the changes, but not to be disrespectful towards others who don't feel contemplated. You should understand there's a reason why people are complaining. If you like the changes, just play the game and be happy with it, instead of trying to suppress other people's opinions, because that's what looks like you're trying to do.
@MarinoKadame The Expansion Pass was the "3rd game", i'm guessing you had zero issues with Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum and the Ultra games though.
Harsh review, honestly— doesn't make much sense to me.
Edit: the one thing that bugs me about these games, and the only major downside, is the exp share. Let me turn it off, please.
Otherwise, I really enjoy this. 7.5/8 to me. People who want Pokémon to be a series for adults will always be disappointed.
@Jeronan Everything else? If it's the exact same, as you mentioned, then why does it have a $60 price tag on it? Nintendo took a game, put little work into giving it the graphics of a early 2000s free children's RPG cell phone game, and made it full price.
And I stand by what I said. The originals are superior. They had native voice chat, the ability to trade ALL Pokemon in the game (even Mew) on the GTS, featured a casino that was cut, costed $30, and featured graphics that didn't cater to children only.
Diamond and Pearl had great moment, and the encounters with Team Galactic are some of my favorite in the entire series. I don't want to see them tarnished by terrible design choices.
Have you ever watched Dragon Ball Z? Imagine taking Majin Vegeta's atonement against Buu, and redesigning it in, as you said "chibi style". It would completely take everything away from it that made it special, and stoop it down to level that only little kids and butthurt fans who can't admit otherwise would like.
There's a group of Pokemon fans that will defend them no matter what. I used to, but they (as with Nintendo as well) have changed. A side note: Diamond and Pearl wasn't exactly a hard game, but it wasn't easy either. If the games graphics didn't already solidify it as a baby Pokemon game, then the difficultu with the EXP share did.
@Snoober But uh, We have never seen DP in a 3d format, other the chibi pixel art?
And you said DBZ, we have seen DBZ in a 3d format, you need DBZ in a 3d format to make it work, because its not like they can punch with such small hands, However, if its was Chibi in the over world, and lets say, whenever you go into a fight it goes back to 3d, even then I don't think people would be that mad.
And you keep treating the artstyle like it defines how hard a game is, or if its a so called baby game or not, A lot of games take this style, Then again its subjective, so you don't have to like it.
And yes, I can totally see were your coming from with the pricing, Going from a game with more content thats 30$ to a remake with less content, being 60$, the lack of Plat content is my real gripe.
@Snatcher I'm saying the graphics accompany the gameplay. The EXP share, even by review sites who actually gave the game favorable scores, hit it for not having the option to turn it off. I'm saying the graphics are par for the course, as the game is generally massively easier than the originals.
@Snoober Wait this game is easier then the original games? I heard they were harder.
Not saying the fact that EXP share can't be turned off is not a problem, In fact its a big problem. But you know, Your opinion on the graphics are just opinion, so I respect it.
@Snatcher Fair deal. And yes. From what I've read, many of the reviewers were sometimes even 10 levels above the highest level Pokemon of whatever gym leader they were at. I can tell you right now that's an issue I never had with the originals.
@Snoober Probably due to EXP share, would be nice if you could turn it off.
Removed - unconstructive; user is banned
@NinjaGuy69 No, it isn't.
Missed opportunity to call the subtitle “Brilliant Disappointment”
Also, in the future, I bet they’re going to add the Platinum content in a paid DLC, I guarantee it
I think the author's displeasure with the chibi art style is being weighted too heavily in this review. Other complaints with the game - lack of adoption of Platinum version upgrades, rigid fidelity to the scale and scope of the originals, and likewise no content expansion that gamefreak has given every other generation remake - all seem fairly impartial to me based on the franchise's precedent. The art style is uniquely subjective a preference, though. It begs the question: is there any difference in professional reviews between "I don't enjoy this" and "this is objectively bad?"
EXP Share is killing me in this game. The fact you can't turn it off is shameful.
-I hate having a team of lvl 40s before I even reach the halfway point
-I hate that they all reached lvl 40 and some have never been used once
-Feels like the game is playing itself
-I am considering doing a Bidoof Solo just to get the "feel of a real game" which is a lame way to have to play this game
I can live with all the other issues- I just don't like that it feels like it's playing itself
@Anti-Matter The pokemon games are some of the easiest games ever made. If "casual gamer" means anyone younger than six, I guess it's true, but it's completely pointless for anyone who actually wants to play a game and not do mindless button pressing. You can just about beat every Pokemon game only using the starter. There's no need to make it easier.
@Kfmush
I played my Pokemon games on 3DS and Switch very casually, that means i played them not so frequently and I didn't really get into Pokemon hunting as I only have interest with certain looking Pokemon.
And when I finished the game, it's finished then I can play something else but I still keep the games to be continued the post game content when I have mood to play them again.
. I feel like Let's Go kinda deserves the same/worse score as well. At least you can play this one comfortably.
While I'll still play these games, it does make long for the days of the DS Pokemon games. I think they were the best in the bunch. I mean even ORAS remakes looked better than this (sad). Perhaps my expectations were too high.
Late to the Party I know but anyway. These games are ok for what they set out to do, recreate the original Diamond and Pearl but one thing that disappointed me immensely is the lack of the Distortion World and Battle Frontier. Ramanas Park was a nice feature however digging for shards can become tiresome especially when random luck is involved but overall I like it. Next we have the Battle Tower, oh boy where to begin, I won't beat around the bush so I'll just get straight to it: first of all it is extremely grindy upon arriving there for the first time. Having to win 7 battles for a pathetic 3 BP is tbh insulting and for a game of this nature to expect the Player to invest so much of their time is quite frankly unacceptable and this was always a major problem I had with the original games. Doing the same thing over and over and over and over again is NOT fun, it's just bloody boring, if you earned 1BP per win that would make the grind tolerable. Oh and what on EARTH is with this game's damage output? it's all over the place.
I think that about covers it. I tend to avoid Pokèmon Articles for obvious reasons at first hence why I'm only just commenting here now.
@Mauzuri does the game run well on Switch?
I know no one will probably read this but, thought I'd say it anyway. Though the review is very accurate, if you loved diamond and pearl, you will still love this game. It was extremely faithful to the originals and ran smoothly with a better underground experience. Yeah, this wasn't a huge upgrade or awesome break through or anything like that, but it gave me a chance to play Diamond and Pearl on my switch and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It doesn't deserve hate, it just deserves disappointment from people that thought a more upgraded game would happen.
bought Pokemon Brilliant Diamond from the local walmart store today. They were all out of Shining Pearl so I pretty much ended up buying Brilliant Diamond which was fine by me i guess
