Nintendo brings all generations of the family together.
And the fact a little old lady can sit in her home and enjoy herself on a game for so many hours is a credit to the designers. Truly remarkable. I hope I can game into my old age.
@LavaTwilight I think your comment wins the day, and it is great that your family has this experience. However, I still object to this decision by Nintendo.
Not all families will have this experience. Some children have behavioural/mental issues where they can’t cope with others changing their stuff. Others just simply won’t be able to get the escape from real life. We already share everything and will be more together in this period of time. So the option should be there.
Even if they forced a family island and the start and you unlocked the individual islands or had a shared space it would work. But forcing it for all won’t work for everyone. And giving a family sharing a Switch a different experience to kids whose families can afford multiple Switches is unfair.
This isn’t a deal breaker for me or my kids. However, it would be nice if we could have our own little islands and then visit each other’s or at least have the option to do that.
The option should be built into the game. Not requiring more money spent to get the same experience others get.
@BenAV sorry, I haven’t got the game yet so thought sharing resources would hinder you as things wouldn’t be spawned if someone else harvested them etc. Anyways, that’s not the point I’m making.
Nintendo makes games for kids. That is their motto, their ethos. But decisions like this are not friendly to multi child families.
It doesn’t allow each child to individually create their own little island and have their own world. Instead, it forces people (and only those who haven’t given Nintendo more money) to compromise and have a hindered experience rather than have the full experience they get from other games.
Just imagine if they did this on other games. Sharing a Breath of the Wild save or Splatoon progress. That would suck and no one would accept it. It shouldn’t be any different with this.
Giving the OPTION for a family to share an island. Well that is different. And some families might prefer that.
Instead saying “don’t share a switch” is just b/s. I’m sorry. But that is such a first world view of things. We can’t all afford these things and Nintendo should not limit or hinder a child because they have to share a Switch with their sibling or because their family can’t afford it.
@BenAV we have one Switch and three people that want to play Animal Crossing.
We aren’t all rich. It’s really not that simple.
Edit: I didn’t see your follow up messages about sharing. That’s what we do. My 5 and 8 year old are like saints compared to me and my brothers when we were their ages. But sharing an island and slowing down all our progress seems like an unfair handicap.
@ViewtifulJotun personally, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them, but if you are only planning on playing one then I would recommend FF7.
If not for anything else it will help you see what the hype was all about.
It is the first that I played and I fell in love with it instantly. If you don’t like traditional JRPGs so much, then 12 is a good option. It is more like an MMO mixed with a JRPG, but still a single player story.
@PickledKong64 it isn’t about numbers killed. More people die in car crashes so far. It is about the disruption of normal life. That is what will cause the economic problems. Just look at the stock markets, the disruption to businesses, production, travel, etc.
If this continues long term we will have more troubles to worry about.
This movie isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but I personally think it is needed for the industry.
Sonic is reaching a new audience with this and making a splash outside of console gaming, and that is good for all of us gamers.
We often see things from the perspective of what we like or dislike. And some of us actually want gaming to be niche. But that doesn’t help the industry.
If this movie can get more kids into gaming that is good. If parents can share an experience with their child and they both enjoy the same characters, that helps parents bond with kids more and helps gaming be more acceptable in homes.
There are a lot of aspects as to why this is good or at least can be.
I think a lot of us focus on the little picture of how we keep ourselves safe from getting the virus, however, the bigger picture in terms of global impact is that China at present is in semi-lockdown.
As the worlds largest producer, we will start seeing shortages in many areas as this continues. And even the momentary blip (if it is only that) will have an impact.
If it is long term, the impact on goods exported will mean shortages in a number of areas. And prices will rise as demand grows. China’s lockdown will mean they use less energy. This will impact oil prices (probably cheapen them), but could destabilise that market and cause greater competition between the oil producers. The impact to the flow of people will also have an effect on a number of areas.
The knock on affect of this will be impacting most countries. It is the biggest test for our global economy at present. And when the UN got experts together about two years ago and ran through the scenario of a pandemic, the outlook at the time was not good unless governments changed, and we know that doesn’t happen quickly.
So, Nintendo will be doing all they can to keep their supply chains strong, but in all honesty, we probably have some bigger things to worry about.
Forget what the critics say, I’m still going to watch this movie with my son.
His 8-year-old brain will only experience joy at Sonic being on the big screen. Kids aren’t handicapped with criticism like us oldies and the smile on his face will be enough for me to forgive its shortcomings.
Also, we gotta respect the studio for actually listening to the fans.
These things are definitely marmite, but I have a theory as to why they sell well.
In the UK these are in all video game stores and toy shops. And they are generally some of the only video game character available.
Kids don’t know that other versions of their favourite characters exist online. They only see what is available in store. And they mix marvel and comic book characters in and other things, so there is wide appeal.
It isn’t that these are the best models, but for some the only way (that they know of) to get their favourite characters from movies and games.
Until an alternative arrives, we’re stuck with them.
@CharlieGirl I think that is the sound of people mocking their friend/colleague over some embarrassing pictures that they accidentally showed to everyone.
They made a big deal out of it to embarrass the guy, not because they get overly excited seeing a video game girl in a bikini.
My collection is for personal nostalgia. I rarely play the games, they are stored away and once a year or so I get them out and browse, reminisce and dream of the good old days. I don’t think it is worth a great deal, but hopefully my son will enjoy inheriting it one day.
I regretfully got rid of my PlayStation 1 and 2 collection when I got married. It was simply a space saving exercise and crazily it was my own idea. I kept some key titles and that was it. A bit stupid considering we now have a big enough house to store it and my brother’s gaming collection has been with my parents for years without them complaining.
Thankfully, between me and my brothers, we have a collection that spans all Nintendo, SEGA, Sony and Microsoft consoles and handhelds. So one day I’d like us to combine it somewhere, hopefully without arguments.
I’m glad this feature wasn’t available at launch. I saw shouting matches over Poke Gyms in my local park a few weeks after launch. This feature could have started real life PVP matches...
The mobile version of battle cats went through a popularity phase at my sons school a few months back.
It’s actually quite a fun little game. They even did a Street Fighter x Battle Cats event where you could get a Ryu cat and other characters to add to your army. After Christmas and Pokemon though, the fad changed.
@Jimez is that true? I’ve never pre-ordered digitally, but I’d they put the pre-load on the system instantly that is clearly just a BS way of Nintendo refusing refunds and as a community we should reject that entirely.
@DreamerDC @jco83 @CupidStunt I agree and think there are two problems. 1. Governments are always playing catch up with legislation and don’t understand the digital market and are acting slowly to stop these loopholes. 2. Nintendo is greedy and is too concerned with protecting their bottom line than respecting their customers (and I say that as a fanboy). Both 1 and 2 need fixing.
@sanderev @Cosats There are a lot of reasons why people want to cancel their games, circumstances change and they can’t afford it or the customer changes their mind (shock horror).
I assume the game pops up on the home page as the system starts downloading in the days before release and this acts as a reminder for people. They then go to cancel and get a refund and they can’t. And it’s BS.
It doesn’t matter how clever people are or whatever, some people will have genuine reasons to cancel and Nintendo should respect their customers enough to honour that.
Nintendo not making a sale is far easier for them to absorb than for a single customer. Most of us only have limited funds and this just hurts the little guy.
I generally like the animation. However, the faces of Ash, Misty and Brock all look a little... off? Maybe too child like?
I think I will show my children the original movie (if I can find it) before we watch this new one. The heart that movie has and the feels at the end. I remember as a teen I was welling up in the cinema and felt embarrassed thinking I was the only one upset in the cinema. I turned to my side to see this big dude bawling his eyes out, and I knew then it was okay to cry at a Pokemon movie.
I think the Japanese one is the best artistically.
However, I chose North America because I love the retro “Generic Karate Expert” style of the man on the front rather than the blonde hero on the other two.
There is always a desire for us to place things into competition with each other. But we don’t compare Ferrari with Toyota. We understand they appeal to different markets.
Likewise we don’t compare mobile phones to consoles. They have different audiences and functions within the gaming space.
I feel this is how the Switch is. Yes, there is a clear overlap with the Xboxes and PlayStations, but at the same time Switch is branching out on its own. Whilst the other two consoles are edging more towards competing with the PC audience.
I can’t wait for people to “get” that Nintendo can and will exist in its own space and that it is fine to do that and still be relevant.
My 8-year-old son and I played this completely together, with my wife and daughter watching most of it. 120 hours bonding over a game is something quite special and watching him be too scared to fight anything and only doing the shrines whilst I did everything else and seeing him progress to defeat Ganon by himself was a great way to watch him grow.
This will probably be at the top of my favourite game list forever. Or at least very close to it.
And glad to see more than than just my family was able to experience this game together.
I know it is nice to see how well consoles are selling against the competition but I think there are a lot of factors involved and it doesn’t paint the full picture.
Personally I would like to see some journalism into the console figures as a whole. Is gaming growing? Are there more people playing games today than last year or are there less? How is mobile gaming affecting this? Are people priced out and stuck on old gens? Are these consoles selling better than last gen, etc
I know that might not be what Nintendo Life is about, but looking specifically at Nintendo it would be good to see their total market share, how engaged their audience is and what their profitability is like.
There are quite a few things we could look into that are more than just figures like this.
I loved this game. Definitely a game of the decade.
For some reason the combat voice lines are nostalgically soothing for me. I have various songs from the game on Spotify and in my head I’m going “Now it’s Reyn time”, “Hammer beat”, “Airslash” etc.
The new Pokemon games are great fun. Yes, they could easily be upgraded with cut scenes and voice acting (and they should have it at this stage) but there is no denying they are fun and these games are bringing great enjoyment for our family and I’m glad they are seeing success.
Nintendo’s success in Japan is unreal. Whilst I hope the West’s charts will one day more closely reflect this (not be dominated by Nintie, but have more nuance in their titles) I can’t help but think Japan is helping ensure we see many more titles coming to this console in the years ahead.
I have a launch joy-con with bad drift. It’s unusable now. And two joy-cons I bought my son for Christmas keep losing connection to the Switch even when they are being used connected in handheld.
These things are so expensive and so frustratingly temperamental.
They absolutely have to bring the HD Zelda games over to the Switch. And Skyward Sword HD would be a great addition.
At the moment the Wii U is the best console for Zelda fans. You can play almost all of them on there. Shouldn’t be too hard to get those games onto Switch.
@Balta666 I get your point, but since there are thousands of games on the Switch already, I don’t think it is wrong to have a few being handheld only or touch screen.
I know it isn’t for everyone. But I think it is healthy for the system to have niche games.
Even those of us who haven’t played Dark Souls (or dabbled but can’t get into it) can appreciate the positive impact of these games on our community.
Also, I appreciate the storytelling of this article. The colleague at work or playing the same game at the same time and the experience that brings in itself is special.
I remember friends of my parents buying the DS specifically to play Brain Training.
This resulted in my parents buying me and my brothers a copy in the hopes we would get smarter. Funnily enough, all three of our DS’s got fair usage out of it. It was fun.
Anyway, in a world before smartphones it must have sold well on the DS, right?

This pandemic is the biggest event to affect the world since games consoles were invented.
It will be interesting to see how the industry holds up. We know there will be shortages and if global markets crumble it could change things.
But in the short term, I think a lot of people will be gaming whilst the quarantines take place.

Beautiful. I’m so glad people take the time to make art like this.
And that BotW theme tune is so powerful.
Re: Touch And Rotate Your Way Around The Cartoon World Of Sir Eatsalot On Switch
@Balta666 it’s probably not for me either to be fair.
Re: Touch And Rotate Your Way Around The Cartoon World Of Sir Eatsalot On Switch
@Balta666 I get your point, but since there are thousands of games on the Switch already, I don’t think it is wrong to have a few being handheld only or touch screen.

Re: Feature: Game Of The Decade Staff Picks - Dark Souls
Even those of us who haven’t played Dark Souls (or dabbled but can’t get into it) can appreciate the positive impact of these games on our community.

Re: Random: Internal Files Reveal Pokémon GO Was A Major Hassle For The Canadian Military
Is it just me or does it sound like Canadian bases are a little easy to get into?
I mean, kids climbing all over the tanks and a van just driving into a military base. I know Canadians don’t lock their front doors but...
Re: God Of War's Art Director Is Now Designing Incredibly Realistic Star Fox Characters
I really want a new Star Fox Adventures.
It is my favourite Star Fox game and one of my favourite Game Cube games.
This may be a minority opinion, but this artwork makes me want it so bad!
Re: Ni no Kuni Anime Movie Arrives On Netflix Later This Month
I love Ghibli films and the Ni No Kuni games and I’m sure I will love this.
Did Netflix actually invest in this for it to be coming there?
