Animal Crossing: New Horizons has received endless praise from critics and has been smashing sales records since it launched last Friday, but not everyone's happy.
Just a few hours ago, the official Bandai Namco US Twitter account shared a new tweet, directly tagging Nintendo of America. It complained about New Horizons only allowing one island per Switch, calling the game an 'unpleasant experience' as a result.
As you might expect, the tweet was almost immediately removed, suggesting that the poor soul in charge of Bandai Namco's social media accounts accidentally remained logged in to the company account, rather than tweeting from their personal one. Whether they realised their mistake and removed the tweet themselves, or whether someone else at the company stepped in to fix the issue is unknown.
Oopsie!

I mean... They do make a solid point, ya’ know. 🤷🏽♂️
Sharing's bad, kids.
@AlexOlney
That post goes perfectly with your avatar, Alex. Well done.
If you can't share an island then don't share a Switch. It's pretty simple really.
Judging by the thumbnail, even Isabelle hates the game.
Actually, getting additional island is better than strictly one island per one console.
Two is better than one.
Good Things Come In Three.
Plenty of resources available just use a miles ticket and fly to an island full of resources.
Nintendo is a commendably consistent example of the golden parity: "you don't have to like what we do, we don't have to do what you like". You'd think someone working in the industry itself would be more familiar with it by now.
Whole thing is false, there is more than enough stuff to go round, and as somebody said with the Nook miles system you can even visit different Islands with even more items.
@BenAV Yeah man, just spend another 360$ on an extra Switch plus game! Easy!
Thankfully I'm the only one playing Animal Crossing in my household otherwise it would definitely be a problem. Stupid decision indeed.
The whole point is let possible people help themselves, do the things together, cooperate. If the guy dont understand this concept, dont have reason do share the switch or the game. So, a really pointless post.
@TheNewButler,
You don't have to though, there is always the choice of simply not buying it and hope they get the message.
@Kuchenjaeger Either that or learn to share. Two perfectly reasonable options to pick from.
@TheNewButler isn't this most games though? The Witcher 3 lost me when it became clear I had to use potions and the right magic, other such stuff in order to bit die all the time. That's them telling me my casual nature wasn't welcome here.
You're at the behest of the designer on basically every game. Sims stopping you easily murdering your Sims is another example.
This one of those problems I would have never noticed.
This has always been the case. From GC to now every animal crossing has local multiplayer on the same town (unless GC had another memory card).
It's like complaining to Nintendo that Mario Kart uses split screen or something.
There are plenty of resources and the majority of what you build is for everyone on the island anyway so it's not an issue
Our family is loving sharing an island together, makes it much more interesting particularly for younger children who get to help pick where we all live
Well, I don't like when I start up a Bandai Namco game after downloading to find pages upon pages of a User Agreement I have to accept to then play their game. 🤷♂️
@BenAV U know it's not that easy sometime to have 2 switches? for example 2 children got a switch for christmas and have to share it and now want to play AC, but each on their on island
but now thats sadly not possible and one of those children has an inferior experience than the other
Having multiple islands on one system would mean that everyone in the household would never be able to fly to each other’s islands, completely ruining the multiplayer experience. So it’s a no.
@mariomaster96 Did you ever have siblings? Yeah I argued with mine over a console many times, but ultimately some of our best memories were sharing an animal crossing town together. It was so fun building up houses next to each other and trading items in game.
@mariomaster96 Forcing them to learn to share and work together isn't a such a bad thing. I don't see the problem.
@BenAV Is not that simple though.
The second player can't advance the story portion of the game - i.e. can't build bridges, can't put plots down, can't donate furniture to plots.
It's a bit disheartening to say the least to be the second player, especially when both of us are new to the series. The first one gets all these cool "quests" and player two basically has to wait for p1 to do them.
I actually agree with their frustration. My son plays more than my young daughter and he's pretty much taking everything before she gets a chance to have a go. At least that's how it feels.
@gloom I am sure they could implement a feature to visit different islands on the same switch.
I guess this is one of those cases where the portable console mindset is used; want your own island get your own Switch and game. Of course not everyone was an extra £250 to 350 lying around for another console and game; but the incentive to buy is added in.
Of course seeing as I’ve never played an Animal Crossing game before I can’t really comment on this so I’ll let those with experience share their thoughts.
@Starvald They definitely could have handled that a bit better to make it even for all players. Everyone getting their own island isn't a necessary solution though. Even so, it's not all that bad. Can always just talk and play together for the important decisions like that. Just gotta cooperate.
@Starvald How? Like a split screen mode that works both islands at the same time? Get real.
Sharing example is fine if both players have similar time to play the game and can take turns to play. Otherwise, first player gets to progress the island, while the other players options are very limited. I watched the gameplay for first and second day, then played myself. The difference between expiriences is huge.
I would be fine with it if this would be players choice, but forcing this limitation is very strange to me. I don't want to buy second switch just for this game, one is more than enough for us in every other game.
The obvious solution to this, if Nintendo cares, would be an opt-in for sharing an island on a console. While this is in the spirit of the game since forever, I’m sure a lot of people are either unaware of this caveat, or are aware and don’t appreciate it.
And sure, you can’t please everyone. But this seems like something that isn’t a big deal from a developmental standpoint, a fix that could be addressed if they so choose to.
I have a hard time understanding why anyone would be against the option to create seperate islands per user. If you want to force your children to play on the same island and teach them the morals of sharing, you could do that anyway. Options are never a bad thing
@gloom yeah i have 3 older siblings who didnt let me play although the gba also belonged to me, and my parents didnt care
so i dont have good memories sharing my consoles
@gloom Player 1 has island A, player 2 has island B.
Player 1 is playing on island A. Goes to the airport and says that they want to visit Island B.
Player 2 can join coop if they so wish. They can also set permissions for all players on the same switch, call it an Archipelago.
I don't see how splitscreen would be needed.
Even if I have agreed with this sentiment a little before now, seeing it written out in this manner makes it feel gross.
There are plenty of resources on these islands or else opportunities to get more yourself. This is a greedy mindset, and someone needs to learn to share!!
@mariomaster96 Ah we had different experiences then as I’m the oldest. Sorry it was rough for you, we can be mean sometimes
@Starvald If we were at the same Nintendo round table choosing how to set up this Animal Crossing game I would vote against your idea.
Maybe they are grumpy because nobody bought My Hero One Justice 2.
He aint wrong, but I feel like this was suppose to be a personal tweet and not a company one lol.
My major complaint with the game is this...
Some of us really, really, really don't care about customizing the exterior, I'd rather have bigger houses that I can customize than having an exterior I can screw with. Maybe I need a bigger god complex to enjoy that sort of thing, but I've always preferred decorating my house over customizing my town.
It's a legitimate point. Nintendo could have at least given us the option to have our own island or to share one.
...I mean...are they wrong?
I don’t mind sharing/swapping resources with my wife. It’s slightly annoying that she’s the resident representative because she played it first, so I can’t build museums, etc. But she’s not bothered if I log in and play as her.
@Archius9 Sorry, your Witcher 3 example is not really true. Potions and oils are one of the Witchers abilities as he will not die drinking the potions.
But it's not mandatory. You can fight any enemy without using them. In fact, they give you the option to face higher level enemies, but that is totally your decision. No.one forces you to change your play style.
Sure, sometimes you need to use certain magic to open up a path, but if that's bothering you...
I won’t run into the sharing problem because I have no intention of buying it. Of all of Nintendo’s IPs to put their time and focus on...
@FlashBoomerang Nice Parastye avatar!
@BenAV yes because everyone can afford more than one switch
@mazzel I know it's not mandatory but it's highly suggested. I was basically saying that not all games are for everyone and certain mechanics may out people off. I can tell it's a great game but it lost me
Everyone sharing an island is NOT a bad experience. Jeez. What a selfish tw- oops, accidentally logged into my Nintendolife account.
I just want to be clear there are no down votes on this site anymore. So I guess no one can disagree with anything. I have voted liberal for 22 years and even I think this is far too snow flakey.
@BenAV
No other video games works this way. An entire console doesn't typically share a large part of a game. I can tell you're a fan and wanting to defend the decision but it just doesn't make sense.
@johnvboy Don't you need an online subscription in order to go to other islands though?
@Optimist80 It does make sense with the nature of Animal Crossing though. Most other games aren't really relevant.
I was not ready for my boyfriend to actively like this game. He set up house far from everyone else’s, made a forest for himself and was DESTROYING ROCKS, it’s a nightmare. We might kill each other over quarantine because of this island sharing nonsense!
@Investor9872,
Could just play local, there is nothing forcing you to visit other peoples Islands.
@Investor9872 Other peoples' islands via internet, definitely. But I think the "mystery islands" you use the tickets you can buy with Nook Miles should be available without it. Though I do have an Online subscription and can't verify this...
Sharing the island life with my wife was one of my selling points. The choice of a second island for a second player would have been nice, but we wouldn’t have played that way.
@TheNewButler,
I don't have an issue with it to be honest, I would not let anyone mess up my Switch, my little one can have her own Switch and game if she want's to.
Nintendo have never lied about any of this stuff, and if they let you create multiple islands on the same console it would defeat the whole cloud save decision in the fist place.
They will have a back up if your system breaks and will offer system transfers further down he line, but we all knew what we were getting so why moan now.
And right or wrong in your opinion, everyone here seems to be missing the point; petty complaining like this on a "competitor" company account is a really bad look and reflects poorly.
By trying to draw attention to how your "competitor" is bad, it opens up the door to blowback and harsh criticism that wouldn't have been there had you not attacked someone else; people love pointing out that your crap, in fact, does stink, especially when you are acting like it doesn't.
@Optimist80,
There is no defending needed, and the masses will neither care or even know there is an issue, it's only as always the internet minorities complaining about issues that most of us will never have, or even thought about in the first place.
@Kuchenjaeger Switch Lite is €220, game can be shared between systems. Or if you want to play at the same time it's € 60 more for the second copy.
I think everyone complaining hasn't actually played an Animal Crossing game with others before. This whole "one console, one living space" feature is central to the game. Yes it means somebody might dig up the fossils or donate a few fish before you get to. But it's nice to see what they do while you're away.
Growing up, I had to share my town with my younger brother. He trampled flowers, cut down trees, and taught the villagers naughty words. But he got excited when he was able to put a new fish or bug in the museum and he left some pretty cool designs in the Able Sisters' shop.
Playing now with my wife, she's the resident representative and plays more than I do. But that's fine. Nook Miles are ridiculously easy to collect. Even without an Online subscription (we have no friends, so no need to pay that ), anyone can hop on a plane, visit a mystery island, collect more resources, and invite a new resident.
The rule may be a little restrictive, but it is very Animal Crossing. And the experience is still pleasant.
The shared island thing was a genuinely terrible design choice. My regards to all of the family members who start a file on the family Switch after the initial player and don't get to experience the game the way it should be experienced.
On the Gamecube you needed only extra memory cards for extra islands. They could have allowed an island per profile and allowed them to be visited if they wanted to.
I too am not enjoying the resource collecting and the broken tools.
@BenAV
Some people are limited by budget.
@NathanTheAsian Some people are limited by budget.
I'm sure BenAV is willing to buy everyone an extra Switch and copy of the game.
@TheNewButler To you and all the others who moan. There are several ways to have many in game resources for you and for your family. If you bought the game you should know it.
@AlexOlney
No, but player 2 not being able to build buildings or continue the story without the aid of player 1 (therefore having the inferior experience) is bad. Quite bad indeed. God forbid Nintendo actually gave us the option to have one island per user...
Goodness, some people think it's a reasonable statement to say that if you don't want to share an island and to have to manage crafting resources across siblings, you should pay hundreds of dollars each for each parent and sibling to have their own switch. For a problem which every other game has solved already. I'm glad some are in such a good financial situation, but not glad that they're sheltered from the rest of the world so as to not be able to imagine another reality.
It's a greedy cash grab, by consequence if not by purpose. The game is good, but there's no excuse for this. And it is very clear that the game isn't supposed to be played like that: only the player who gets on first gets the rocks or the wood from the trees. There's enough resources on an island where a single player character can find them, but has to look sometimes for things like iron and wood. It would be frustrating to split those resources in a family that gets along and honestly, I'm lucky in that regard (though I live out of state now), but lots of people don't.
Correct me if im wrong here, but hasn't this been the case with every Animal crossing game? I suppose on gamecube you could switch memory cards
@Archius9 Yeah true, I think there is not a single game that will appeal to anyone. 30 years ago Tetris maybe
@PixelTavern Correct me if im wrong here, but hasn't this been the case with every Animal crossing game?
Yeah, you are wrong and you even say it yourself.
I suppose on gamecube you could switch memory cards
You didn't need to buy a another Gamecube and another copy of the game, you just needed to buy another memory card and it could be a third party memory card at that.
@mazzel ha definitely. I don't think games should. The variety of what you like and don't like is one of the great factors of gaming
Guess people didn't care about one island per console, this is fastest selling Animal Crossing ever. Can't blame them, Nintendo is the best, so I trust them fully. And even with one console per island, it's still the best game ever made.
@TheNewButler I agree, and I even think, regarding to what you said about buying consoles, that they shot themselves in the foot. Let's say we'll get a new generation switch model in the next couple of years, with hopefully backward compatibility of those cartridges.
I have now less incentive on upgrading, feeling that I'll have to leave my island behind. Another case: what if the entire family depends on one island. One of the kids saved enough and now wants to buy himself a switch lite. We can't he copy the island and start from where he stopped? Again, less incentive for a new console.
@TheNewButler,
Why have you bought it then, because I am assuming you must have known about all this before you purchased the game.
You can't change any of this of course as the games developers want to stop any manipulation.
@mesome713,
Of course they did not, I mean come on, one person wanting the same island on multiple consoles they own, why the masses are not doing this is beyond me.
Minorities complaining about none issues as usual.
@aznable "Of all of Nintendo’s IPs to put their time and focus on..."
Looking at the sales for AC:NH, it seems Nintendo made the right choice.
@Quarth Looking at the sales for AC:NH, it seems Nintendo made the right choice.
...and that's all that matters?
GameCube: share a village
Wii: share a village
Switch: share an island
It wasn’t an issue in 2005 and it’s not an issue now.
Bandai are right it's a stupid decision
I guess it makes sense with the local multiplayer aspect of things, but couldn't you just invite them "from another island (account)" instead?
Might make getting all of the fruits too easy though...
@BenAV literally the dumbest take I have ever heard.
@johnvboy
I bought it mainly for my wife knowing this limitation. I am the 'second player' here, and I think my expirience is lesser, but still can be enjoyable. This is my first Animal Crossing, and I was not fully aware how severe this limitation is. I can live with it, I'll just wait for P5R, and maybe jump into AC from time to time.
@RadioHedgeFund GameCube: share a village
..or have as many extra villages as you want with extra memory cards.
Wii: share a village
No memory cards, no profiles.
Switch: share an island
We have profiles which could act like Gamecube memory cards.
It wasn’t an issue in 2005 and it’s not an issue now.
Opinions vary.
@RPGamer Your brother said sharing a console with you is a way worst pain. Hell live.
Eh, not an issue to me. I shared the island on Gamecube and 3DS while my older sibling was the mayor. It was actually a lot of fun to get my turn with the 3DS and see what projects and other things she did, I didnt mind then and definitely won't mind now.
@Cosats it's not about resources. It fundamentally changes the way the game is played when another character has gone through first getting things built and progressing the island. The co op is a disaster as well.
@Crono1973 the sales have nothing to do with that feature. What an idiot thing to suggest. It's been how long since the last animal crossing? They know regardless of how many things they skimped on mass amounts of people were still going to buy the game.
@mesome713 I totally disagree with this comment. As much as I want 4k Nintendo games they make them in 720-1080p. So I moan about it but then buy the game. This is a similar case. Just because people don't like the save system doesn't mean people were going to boycott the game. Your logic is unless you 100% agree with something a person shouldn't buy it or support it. I barely 100% agree with anything. That doesn't mean I should be a minimalist.
@FullmetalB I didn't suggest it. I just responded.
@sixrings Everyone complains about all games. That's life.
I really don’t see this as a problem since new leaf and wild world was also this way. No one complained then.
@BenAV Not everyone can afford a Switch you know.
@AlexOlney Exactly. That's not lovely.
@Dodger Fully agree.
@Saka,
The game is awesome, and these limitations will have little to no impact on the majority of players.
@GetShulked I really don’t see this as a problem since new leaf and wild world was also this way. No one complained then.
Maybe because the DS and 3DS were single user dedicated handhelds that didn't have profiles and that were much cheaper than the Switch. Maybe because DS and 3DS games were cheaper than Switch games.
Maybe consumer expectations change over time too.
I'd rather play this game than be cradled in God's arms. It's that good.
@Crono1973 Maybe...
@TheNewButler,
The development team is implementing this not Nintendo, it's their train set at the end of the day, you either get on board or you don't, yes things could be easier, but it's not game breaking either.
@Quarth Yes, well like I always say- people are stupid and like stupid things.
@Crono1973,
Nobody's really complaining now to be honest, well not a lot of people anyway.
@aznable Come on now, your trolling isn’t funny.
AC is a great gaming franchise – not for everyone of course, but to a lot of people it is. Taste differs obviously, but why wouldn’t Nintendo focus on a new game in a franchise that a lot of people love and will buy?
What games would you like to see?
@johnvboy Nobody's really complaining now to be honest, well not a lot of people anyway.
Don't ignore the people who are.
Just went out on Friday and bought both my kids a Switch Lite and each a copy of Animal Crossing - PROBLEM SOLVED.
Added bonus, now they don't have to touch my Switch.
@Starvald
Some of the “first player quests” as you’ve put it are quite tedious to be honest. I wish one of my kids had the dedication to collect resources, craft things to get things done but they don’t. I wish someone else would have helped with crafting furniture for the first 3 residents!
@Crono1973,
Why?
@TheNewButler,
Let's just agree to disagree, I personally have no issues with it.
@freaksloan,
I feel the exact same way, my little girls i Pad is covered in fingerprints, I would just be getting annoyed when anybody else touched my Switch.
@johnvboy Why do you want to?
@freaksloan Well that's a $500+ solution.
I'm honestly surprised that people are complaining. I get that not everyone can be the island representative, but I didn't complain that I wasn't the mayor in New Leaf. I just worked with my wife to get everything taken care of.
@Crono1973,
People can complain as much as they want, which is their right, but I do not remember posting they should be ignored, I simply stated their concerns were in the minority.
@johnvboy
A lot of people is complaining on metacritic. I don't agree with all the 0 ratings, but seeing number of bad user reviews and comments here, I think problem exists. Of course people will say AC is being review bombed and there is no problem. Just because it is fine for you, does not mean it is fine for others.
@Saka
531 user reviews, 358 positive and 176 bad or mixed, give me a break fella, the definition of minorities.
Not saying that these small number of people are not entitled to their concerns, or they should be ignored.
Ooooooo someone got dumped by Nintendo........
I will say, it is kind of frustrating for some people's situations (especially in quarantine), and it's annoying they couldn't find a workaround. It doesn't apply to me, but I get it
Nintendo is outdated, no more sharing is allowed. No more social networking or sharing now, it's all social distancing and isolating.
If multiple people can do Gulliver's sidequest in a given day, then resources should absolutely be available on an account basis. You shouldn't have to feel forced to get a Nook Miles ticket just to get some crafting materials.
I don't understand why Nintendo is restricting the game the way they are, even if it required a full install per user I think people would be ok with that. Why put those limitations in place? It does not seem to be impacting the sales or the reviews, but it is alienating some of your fanbase.
Animal Crossing is a shared experience for my family, something we have grown up playing and loving. Back in my Bachelor days, I played the Gamecube version. My wife and I played Wide World on our Gameboy Advances. Our older kids all played City Folk with us. As I recall, we all shared one village on that one. Our youngest daughter joined us in New Leaf. We ended up with four copies of that one, so that we could play together in various combinations.
Cue New Horizions. We bought 3 new systems just for Animal Crossing (2 birthday presents and one surprise for the wife) over the course of the year in anticipation of this game's release. Even if it had offered multiple Islands per system, we would have bought multiple systems, as that is how we like to play. We have 4 systems (2 regular, 2 lights) and 3 copies of the game(2 digital, 1 physical). We were very lucky to be in a place to be able to do that. There are a ton of people who can't, especially in current circumstances.
Maybe after a year or two, Nintendo will remove the limitation. They just don't want people getting everything in the first few days, then never play the game again. They'll probably restore cheating methods in the next year or two as well, since they'd probably have their focus shifted away from Animal Crossing by then.
@BenAV
Or option 3
You know, the obvious one
The one that if available, means none of these complaints would have ever happen
And by far the most reasonable one
@TheNewButler Yet all the past Animal Crossing games all had one town per console even the Wii one
You only could have more then one town on the gc and I guess the n64 one if you had a spare memory card, and that was the only way to visit other towns, since Wi-fi entered the series it's always been like this. in short just get another switch if you can't share
I think Bandai Namco was more worried what about Doomguy would do than the backlash from Nintendo fans.
@jamesthemagi I'm sure people will always find something to complain about no matter what they do. They're better off just ignoring it than letting it dictate how they design their games.
@johnvboy
Im sorry you are vehemently unable to see how this affects many people.
@ClassSonicSatAm Yet all the past Animal Crossing games all had one town per console
Um....
You only could have more then one town on the gc and I guess the n64 one if you had a spare memory card
So your first statement is disproven by you.
Those who keep saying it's no big deal must have never played sharing a town. I have my own Switch and play AC NH myself but my cousin and his gf share his. He works like crazy as he is a warehouse employee working 12 hour shifts right now due to our current situation. His gf is home all the time due to her job being put off. So she is playing the game 24/7 and he can only play for a couple hours at night. Now resources aren't the issue. It's the fact that the game is being played by his gf so he has done none of the story missions and he doesn't even know what is going on. Everything is done by the time he comes home. This is BS as he can't really enjoy the game. And what's even sadder is that if he wanted to buy another game it wouldn't matter as you can still only have one island per Switch. WTF?! Why? Remember cloud saves, I mean NO cloud saves! Hackers have already hacked the save files yet we can't even backup a game we might put 500 hours into! Nintendo never makes sense and it's what keeps them from being truly great...
@BenAV I think they designed it this way to sell more consoles.
They have a point though. You could fit the settings of an entire village on the smallest memory cards in the GameCube game. Granted, the first officially-released Animal Crossing game is a few generations behind, but storage space has also increased quite a bit since then.
Let's be honest; it's a safe bet that Nintendo has this limitation to encourage everyone to buy their own Switch unit.
People here are salty
@Crono1973 I don't think that's the reasoning behind it but at the very least it could be a nice side effect and a good a reason as any to keep doing it how they always have.
If Nintendo really wanted every single person to buy their own Switch, then the Switch wouldn't be able to support up to 8 unique user accounts.
Animal Crossing shares an island across all users because that's the experience the developers wanted.
@Archius9
Really? I have been quite enjoying Witcher 3 whenever I load it up. I almost never use potions, and about the only magic spells I ever use (unless pretty much forced to) are the shield and fire blast. And even then I sometimes forget to pop the shield on and just go in swinging and dodging. So I wouldn't say you are "forced" to use them in combat, per se.
As to the topic of the article, if you know that's how the game is going in, and you don't like the sound of it...then don't buy/play it. No on is forcing them to play OR enjoy AC:NH. We have 3 Switch systems here, and I bought 3 copies of the game, because we all wanted out own islands and to be able to visit each other online or locally. But that was my choice...I could have just bought the one copy and we all play together, but chose not to go that route. My personal opinion on the game? Its a relaxing masterwork in how to waste time in a peaceful, soothing (and even competitive) world. Also...the online connection seems to run perfectly for us. The coming and going load screens are a bit meh in the way they interrupt play...but once you are all together its smooth as butter, running around together, hunting down bugs....fishing...harvesting supplies. Its so much FUN in such a simple seeming package.
Welp somebody got fired.
@aznable It's cool you don't like AC, not every game is for every gamer, but since it's now officially the second biggest launch in Switch history before even factoring in digital sales, I'd say putting resources into this has worked out pretty well for them.
For me, I said no to second switch since during E3 they only showcase Smash and no mentioning of AC ( plus most of the game I can play on PC or PS4 ). And when they did, and mentioned about 1 island per switch ( not per cartridges/game ) I wasn't happy but still, I might consider getting one if I can find one cheaper. Got a lite on ebay which I prefer, and now I play on lite and my lil girl play on the Standard.
So those who said have to spend $300 (standard ), you can get a lite for $200 or less ( hunt for good price ) for multiple kids or teach them to share.
@jamesthemagi,
No need to be sorry fella, but at most first word problems, I can see how it would affect some people, but I just see it as a minor issue at best.
@aznable Dude, I'm sure there are plenty of things you like that others would consider stupid, that's life. Not sure why you feel the need to go out of your way to insult others over a game you don't like, but I suspect you are a miserable person and I feel very sorry for you.
Anyway, the resource thing, as mentioned, isn't really a problem, but the fact that only one player gets to progress the game will be a big problem for some. I get the encouraging sharing thing, but since multiple players on one Switch don't actually get to share everything, it turns what is already an arbitrary restriction into an unfair one.
@BenAV try living in a big low income family then you can talk
@Donald_M I feel pretty happy, and I’m not insulting others over a game, I’m insulting everyone about everything, and I count as part of everyone.
@Quarth Like most people I’d love to see another Metroid, and the fact that it has taken 3 years of the Switch being on the market for a restart of a prolonged project to take shape makes me sad. I’d also like to see another Pikmin, or F-Zero, or Kid Icarus, or even... A remaster of Hybrid Heaven? I’m sure they could get those rights from Konami. I dunno. They’ve got a rich back catalogue. And I’m not trolling.
@PickledKong64 No thanks but I'll talk anyway.
@BenAV then dont say crap. I'm in a low income family and my 4 other siblings share 1 island. So what your saying is that I should buy 5 switches and 5 copies of animal crossing. Give me a break. Shut up kid
@PickledKong64 Or just share?
@aznable Sounded like trolling to me.
Anyway... Metroid Prime 4 is confirmed, just delayed. I want it as much as you, but we need to be patient.
And sure, it would be nice with those other games you mentioned as well. But I bet we get more info from Nintendo soon on what they are planning forward.
Doesn't mean it was wrong to focus on AC right now. A lot of people wanted it and are happy with this release. Why not be happy that others are happy? Your attitude makes you seem petty and selfish and that's why I believed you were trolling. But whatever you say...
The biggest problem is that only the first one to get to the island can do anything meaningful.
Hasn't it always been that way tho?
Well I understand why they're mad because of how dumb it is. All I know that nintendo needs to stop hiding important details from a new game they're going to release so people knows ahead of time. I will have to waste 200$ for a switch lite when its around christmas just to own my island to myself.
@Mr_Persona But we've known about the one island thing for months now?
@PickledKong64 actually you only need one copy for multiple island for single player, but yes... do need multiple system thou. I am sharing 1 cartridge with my lil girl now till my copy deliver from Target, and we both have our own island.
@MEMEHAWK12_YT Hasn't it always been that way tho?
No it hasn't but let's pretend so we can take your point further.
They shouldn't have changed things that have always been, yeah?
@Anri02 no people are just finding that out now now after the game was released
that problem was kept as a secret for a long time until now when it was released
@Mr_Persona,
We knew about it for a while before the game was released, a site had the details on the back of the game box ore something.
@UnknownReader,
Good to know, I may get a Switch lite for my daughter.
@Mr_Persona All right, it turns out we've only know about it for a bit over a month, but that's still plenty of time
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/02/you_can_only_have_one_island_per_console_in_animal_crossing_new_horizons
@Enundr,
If every time a game is released and sells well, people that have issues with it claim it sold well but the people still may not be happy, we can't win with that type of rationale.
I actually enjoy the setup haha, I bought the game for my wife and she plays the primary role, and I think it works out just great. Theres gotta always be that one person that is into AC the most and you just let them do the primary stuff. Its great.
@BioNemesis Why not give people the option of sharing a town or having a town for each profile?
Oh no, I have to share near infinite resources with my family. Death would be sweeter than this living hell.
I agree with the Twitter account. I wish they commented on Cloud Saves missing too
@TheNewButler "It's another one of those situations where Nintendo wants to tell you how to play their games and not let you find your own way."
Well, yeah, but that's what video game designers do: they create games with certain rules that the player is forced to observe.
On paper that sounds like an awful mechanic. Idk anything about the series.
But this is how AC does things isn't it?
@aznable Fair enough. You're an equal opportunity jerk, I can respect that.
Anyway, it's not hard to figure out why Nintendo would prioritize a new Animal Crossing over Metroid or F-Zero. You will get your new Metroid game eventually. F-Zero's probably not very, but I do hope you get the games you want to see even if they hold no interest for me personally.
@Donald_M “equal opportunity offender” is the proper nomenclature.
I mean, I can totally understand why people don't like having to share one island. I happen to think it should have been optional.
But I'm in the group of "It doesn't affect me so I can live with it."
But it would probably annoy me if I had to fight with a sibling or something.
It's an archaic design that shouldn't exist in 2020 anymore. Its a shame they chickened out and deleted cause I'm sure devs criticizing has a better chance of causing impact
I am one of those people that don't have to share with anyone so it doesn't matter much to me but I'd argue against this any day of the week cause it's such a stupid design. If I had more than one child, I'd love for them to be able to express their islands the way they want to individually, without having to spend more than the $360 it takes to play the game
People complaining about sharing the island... is ridiculous! Sharing the town has always been a thing in every Animal Crossing game and will forever continue to stay that way. In the GameCube if you wanted your own town and not share it? Get your own memory card! In the DS and 3DS (Wild World and New Leaf) you don't want to share a town? get your own game card or own 3DS if is digital. And in the Wii (City Folk) if you don't want to share either? Get your own Wii console! New Horizons is no different, don't want to share? Get your own Switch!
@TheNewButler "Then there are rules that restrict players for no good reason other than Nintendo."
Every game ever made has arbitrary rules that limit the player in some way in keeping with the designer's vision. There are no exceptions. You just happen to not like this particular design decision, and that's fine, but stop acting like Nintendo did something wrong.
It is so absolutely incredible to me that people defend the single-island choice here. There is no excuse, non whatsoever, for having designed the game this way. I don't think there is another company in the world, besides maybe Apple, who can get away which such awful, consumer-unfriendly game design choices, and still have the pleasure of getting those defend by fans who swallow literally anything that is shoved down their throats. Sad.
I'm enjoying the game right now, because I don't have to share it, but I know several people for whom this is a problem, and no, they don't have several hundred euros lying around to graciously donate to Nintendo just so they can play a game they purchased properly. And if they did have that kind of cash, I'd highly recommend them not to give it to Nintendo, because there are no depths this company will not sink to.
@Mountain_Man This particular design choice is much more expensive. You can think of profiles on a Switch as being memory cards on a Gamecube except Nintendo locked the ability to make more towns.
No doubt this was a decision designed to sell more consoles.
@Mountain_Man
Right. And people are saying it's an incomprehensible and terrible design choice.
Imagine you were to buy a box a breakfast cereals, but it would include razor blades aside from cereals. In your world, that would just be a design choice and something you'd have to just deal with. In my world, that would be cruel and indefensible.
(Don't know why I decided to use this bizarre analogy but I like it so much now that I'm keeping it)
@Crono1973 "No doubt this was a decision designed to sell more consoles."
Sure, you could be cynical about it. Or you could reason that, perhaps, the designers wanted to emphasize the social nature of the game and encourage players to share their towns wth each other.
@TheGameSquid "...fans who swallow literally anything that is shoved down their throats."
I wasn't aware that Nintendo was going around and forcing people to buy this game against their will. Someone should report them to the proper authorities.
Let's be reasonable here. Whoever doesn't like this design decision can simply choose to not buy the game. Why is that so hard?
In older Animal Crossing games there were only 4 profiles per game, 4 players who were able to live on the same island/in the same town (On Gamecube every Memory Card was one town, on DS every cartridge was one town, on Wii every console was one town).
Now it's still one town per console, but you can live on it with 8 players instead of 4.
Anyway, the point is, back in 2003 I shared my town with two friends and my father. One friend eventually bought a Gamecube and his own game (he visited my town with his new character to get the items he collected), and my father was always playing when I was away. He only played 2 games in his life. Tetris and Animal Crossing. He was into the fishing part of the game. And he put the money he made from it in front of my door.
This game is built for sharing, especially with close friends and family.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought this was a gameplay staple of the series. You might have been able to work around it previously but AC was always intended to work this way. Either way, whining about it changes nothing. Current options are play as intended, buy multiple copies/systems since this bothers you so much, don’t buy/play the game. Pick one sure, but it isn’t the end of the world. As it is a gameplay mechanic inherent to this franchise, it isn’t even an actual problem.
I mean this has literally been the same thing for every AC game? And even with New Leaf, only the first player got to progress with deciding the projects and story etc.
Nintendo Online has cloud saving, you could store extra islands on there and let people share islands if they want.
Oh wait, I forgot Nintendo doesn’t use their own services for their first party games...
Have the people saying “share” Actually played it and tried it. It’s not the resources. Once someone has done something the other person can’t. So all the challenges and stuff vanish.
The resources isn’t the main problem, as for someone that would have loved having different islands to play on is a problem. I would love to make lots of different themed style islands that I’m willing to put in into a different profile, but knowing it’s forced onto one island does ruin the vibe for me and ruins a little fun but it’s still amazing game overall. I just wished they would have not made that a thing in general (one island only). There’s people that are alone too. My opinion but I did wanted to state that sense this game does involve a lot of creativity and only forcing it onto one island does suck. And I diffidently don’t wanna delete all of my save data just for a new themed island.
I've got no issue with it, game is brilliant and way different from what I usually play, also happy it has single player! Thank you Nintendo! 👌
@BenAV we have one Switch and three people that want to play Animal Crossing.
We aren’t all rich. It’s really not that simple.
Edit: I didn’t see your follow up messages about sharing. That’s what we do. My 5 and 8 year old are like saints compared to me and my brothers when we were their ages. But sharing an island and slowing down all our progress seems like an unfair handicap.
@Kienda How is it slowing down your progress?
@BenAV sorry, I haven’t got the game yet so thought sharing resources would hinder you as things wouldn’t be spawned if someone else harvested them etc. Anyways, that’s not the point I’m making.
Nintendo makes games for kids. That is their motto, their ethos. But decisions like this are not friendly to multi child families.
It doesn’t allow each child to individually create their own little island and have their own world. Instead, it forces people (and only those who haven’t given Nintendo more money) to compromise and have a hindered experience rather than have the full experience they get from other games.
Just imagine if they did this on other games. Sharing a Breath of the Wild save or Splatoon progress. That would suck and no one would accept it. It shouldn’t be any different with this.
Giving the OPTION for a family to share an island. Well that is different. And some families might prefer that.
Instead saying “don’t share a switch” is just b/s. I’m sorry. But that is such a first world view of things. We can’t all afford these things and Nintendo should not limit or hinder a child because they have to share a Switch with their sibling or because their family can’t afford it.
@Kienda It's not designed that way to be a hindrance though. Animal Crossing is different from most other games so you can't really compare those. It's meant to be like a little community that everyone shares and works together in. They shouldn't have to change the game to satisfy those that don't want to experience it in the intended way.
I'm not saying that everyone should have to go out and buy their own Switch. Just that if they're really that opposed to the ideas of sharing and working together then the option is there.
@BenAV well we will have to agree to disagree.
This isn’t a deal breaker for me or my kids. However, it would be nice if we could have our own little islands and then visit each other’s or at least have the option to do that.
The option should be built into the game. Not requiring more money spent to get the same experience others get.
I do have to agree this is a little strange: only one player allowed for a game that's on a $400 console: it's an awesome game, but if my bf wants to create a profile to play it, he will need his own Switch (as I downloaded mine digitally)?!
@neyoung8 that’s adorable 🙂
Someone forgot to change their Twitter accounts hahah.
I actually like the sharing the same place, just feels better for me honestly. Great moments on the Wii/GameCube/DS Animal crossing with my 3 siblings.
Parents understand this issue perfectly. With multiple children in the house (and only two switches), we decided against purchasing this game (and I loved past AC titles).
I made an account just to point out the fact that this is exactly how it was in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Unless they are talking about separate game carts, then that would be different. But if you are using the same copy of new leaf it is the same town. Same 3ds, different cart, different town. I cannot speak on this new game because I only have one copy of the game.
@Crono1973 Thing is Modern consoles don't use Memory cards for primary saving anymore, main saves like for these games are saved to hard drive of the console since the Wii era so why would it change now? again only reason you could do in the GC version was due to being the only way to visit other towns, since they added Wi-fi you needed to either buy another copy of the game DS/3DS or another console Wii/Switch stop living in the 2002
@TheNewButler Again this isn't the early 00s anymore, and why would you need more then one town? it takes long enough to build one up as it is, heck even in the GC era the main point was for 4 players to help build the place together take it in turns
and as for cloud saves since AC is known for people cheating it's not really a big wonder why gotta make a new type of cloud save for it
@ClassSonicSatAm So do you think all games should have only one save per console? Should BOTW have only one save per console?
People: The reason why Nintendo does not allow multiple islands on one console is because people will create an over abundance of resources and give to one player.
So, if you open up 8 account on one system, you can hordes bells, sell off free Nintendo Switch Items for 17K bells, have 8 islands of trees with a constant flow of 10K bell tree, etc etc. Then these resources can all be sent to one island and a single person can propser.
I very much get it and it's the right move, Nintendo (add to this, sharing an Switch with someone creating multiple islands sucks. Better that family stays and plays together vs splitting up solo island playtime. AND, Nintendo sells more switches and games because many persons, like myself, actually buy a second console for family just to be able to play together at same time on separate islands. Smart business move!)
@TheNewButler "If two people want the full game you need two consoles and two copies of the game - that sucks and is unnecessarily restrictive."
lol. It's smart business on Nintendo as many people do just that. Though there is another big reason why Nintendo doesn't allow more than one island. Read my comment above and educate yourself.
@Jengray83 $400? Why not tell the truth: It's $300, even less refurbished smh
This was the way it worked on Wii, and that didn't work too badly at all. It is still an odd choice, though I understand sort of why Nintendo would do it
I love that everyone shares one island, it's the whole magic of the game.
@TheNewButler Both Switches are portable so why would you need to play this game on both?
Again the game is pretty big and takes alot time and even years to unlock everything if your not cheating it's meant to be a personal game, if you got family who want to play it as well, it's meant to be a team effort, help build the place, there's nothing stopping you from taking over the island rep when your playing it
That's my point tho if all the past games have been like this, why on earth you expect it to change all of sudden? honestly one island is big enough, and most people have their own switches now and are online.
Yet Nintendo is patching out cheats/glitches again tho I don't see why your making a big issue OH I can't play this game on both me switches and use the cloud save besides they already said there's a new type of cloud save coming for the game
It's rather bizarre you expect more then one island, I mean unless your going to cheat or just plain greedy
@Crono1973 Animal Crossing is very different to Zelda, With BOTW you can beat it and game ends pretty fast too if your a speed runner while with AC it's a game that takes years to unlock everything unless your cheating even in the GC days it's always been one save that you couldn't back up, sure you could get more towns with more memory cards holding one each but again that was the only to visit other towns, since the DS it's been all online/wi-fi
Unrelated but its interesting that the Animal Crossing hashtag has Tom Nooks face after it.
@ClassSonicSatAm sure you could get more towns with more memory cards holding one each but again that was the only to visit other towns, since the DS it's been all online/wi-fi
Also other family members having their own town.
@AlexOlney I mean...yes. Yes it is bad in this case. There's a limited amount of resources on an AC island and there's tons of customization and decoration to a town. Everyone has a different play style and tastes and being forced to share the same file leads to constant fighting. Some families have returned the game because their kids argue so much.......what's more, only ONE player gets to do everything. The game severely limits the rest to where they actually cannot progress the town at all. This was a horrible design decision in every way.
@dreamssux even $50 is unattainable to normal people. Buying a switch and a game is a "holiday only" kind of thing for most families or takes months of saving.
@Chibi_Manny it's not ridiculous. The main appeal of Animal Crossing for most players is decorating the town their own personal way, picking villagers, customizing the flag, naming the community, countless things that are very personal and special. Most people want their own file to play and being forced to share makes the experience less fun for most, it always has. What's more, all players do not get to experience the full game. Only the first player in New Horizons gets to make progress, place new buildings and upgrade services. All other players have to wait on them, and their gameplay uses up most of the island's resources as well which do not respawn per player.
@BenAV a nintendo switch costs hundreds of dollars. Even used you're looking at a hundred. Most people never have that to throw around unless they work extremely, extremely hard for long periods of time. I had to save up for a year to get a switch.
That's a fair criticism though. Animal Crossing is a game all about personalization and people buy it with the goal of decorating and customizing the whole town/island their own way, they always have. A video game should never force you to compromise with what another player wants....the sibling fights I've already heard about over the town flag, which villagers they want, where to place items and who gets to donate fossils are ripping some families apart and even leading to the game getting returned in some cases.
And even if all players in a household want the same things for their island, they don't all get an equal experience as only one player is capable of advancing the town and making upgrades. All players don't even get to contribute materials to building projects in this one....they're basically nerfed and forced to play a demo version until they can get their own switch. It's one of the worst decisions Nintendo has possibly ever made to be honest.
@dreamssux *$399.98 CAD, don't be a ***** troll.
