The Pokémon Company has announced the latest animated Pokémon movie, Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, will be making its debut on the digital streaming service Netflix next month, on 27th February.
If you recall our coverage of this movie last year, you might remember how it is a CGI reimagining of Pokémon: The First Movie which was originally released in North America in 1999. The new version was considered a "major" hit when it was released in Japan and went onto become one of the top-grossing films in its opening weekend.
Here's the description from the official Pokémon website:
In Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, researchers discover and exploit a fossil of the Mythical Pokémon Mew, unleashing a creation that goes against the very laws of nature: Mewtwo, a Legendary Pokémon intended for use as a tool of destruction. But as Mewtwo becomes aware of its own dubious origin, it begins to resent its human creators and seeks revenge—and Ash, Pikachu, and their friends find themselves at the center of its rampage!

I'm really not a fan of the art style. Didn't like the CG in Detective Pikachu, nor this pseudo 3D animation.
Just not my thing.
This looks GREAT!!! I actually love the CG in the trailer
i really hope this animation doesnt become a trend for pokemon going forward..
I'd rather have Detective Pikachu than any of these Pokémon anime movies.
@Travisemo007 The next one is 2D Animated, so don't worry.
To be honest. I remember watching the original first Pokémon movie. The memories of that film are not my fondest.
This remake completely flew by my radar! The new animation style looks slick! 😊
I generally like the animation. However, the faces of Ash, Misty and Brock all look a little... off? Maybe too child like?
I think I will show my children the original movie (if I can find it) before we watch this new one. The heart that movie has and the feels at the end. I remember as a teen I was welling up in the cinema and felt embarrassed thinking I was the only one upset in the cinema. I turned to my side to see this big dude bawling his eyes out, and I knew then it was okay to cry at a Pokemon movie.
So this is how Sword and Shield should had look like?
I don’t get how the last 2 made it to cinemas and this one gets put into Netflix, I mean is it even coming out on blu Ray?
February coming in hot with the anime movies. Both this and MHA: Heroes Rising drop at the end of February. Can’t wait.
I hated Ash for interrupting Mew and Mewtwo fight in original movie, always wanted to see a conclusion. Doubt we will see it here
This animation style is so ugly. I hope they don't start making any more movies in CG
I'm not sure I understand. Is this a remake of the original movie? Why going through all the hassle to recreate something that's already great?
Awesome news!
Everything looks great except for the human characters, they all look kinda dopey
I hope they have japanese voice option for european users. Pokemon is one of those series where I just can't stand the english dub.
I’m actually pretty excited to see this! I always imagined a new Pokémon game that would have this gorgeous art style. Guess not...
Looks like Nintendo found about my 22nd birthday (on that day) and are releasing that as my present. I have the original on VHS, which is better.
@LexMeat The movie wasn't great, that's the thing. The animation is poor, the voice acting is cheesy and the writing is awful and self-contradictory. The Pokémon movies cannot measure up to other animated films.
