Fans of Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be more than familiar with raccoon overlord Tom Nook by now - the series' mortgage lender and island-starting entrepreneur who probably spends his weekends swimming in piles of cash - but now he's really made it, being recognised by real-life, economics-focused media.
The Financial Times, an international daily newspaper that specialises in business and economic news, has featured Tom Nook and his in-game bank on its front page today. The newspaper's front page regularly hosts stories on the likes of world leaders, the world's largest banks, and the latest political affairs, but the Bank of Nook's recent interest cuts have earned Animal Crossing a coveted spot.
You can see the front page for yourself below; the article reads just like any other, and if you were simply skimming what it had to say, you'd probably think that the Bank of Nook was a real thing causing spikes in gambling over turnip prices. Amazing.
Naturally, there's a full article on the matter, too. It's titled, 'Virtual rate cut forces Nintendo gamers into riskier assets' and can be read in full here. It even gives a shoutout to some of you very lovely Nintendo Life readers who have been discussing the interest cut in our forum pages.
We feel oddly proud of our favourite money-sponging raccoon. Animal Crossing on the front page of the Financial Times, huh? What a world.

Robin Wigglesworth is low-key the best name I've ever seen.
It's amazing because it discusses a legal loop hole for illicit financial gain caused by time traveling.
As Wall Street is known to do.
In a time of pandemic animal crossing still hitting front page, I love it
12m players? Think it’s more than that!
It’s nice to see that the world can’t ignore games anymore.
And I guess Animal Crossings economy is going to be a lot more stable than ours in the future...
Bears and Bulls reading about Animal Crossing. Huh.
Tom Nook is a smart leader, wish we had one.
Missed opportunity to use an image of Tom Nook with his arms crossed with an unapologetic smug look on his face.
There are Bear Markets. There are Bull Markets. But the only market that really matters in the Bells Market.
Unlike the real world economy, the Animal Crossing economy hasn't collapsed.
Next Animal Crossing gets it’s own stock market the Nookei.
This literally looks like an April Fool that got left in, crazy times. Perhaps an article had to be bumped at the last minute and this was the first thing the night editor could lay their hands on?!
@AlexOlney
Name is better then Olympic Chairman Dick Pound?
Wow! Gamers are now considered mainstream enough to appear in the Financial Times. I'm impressed!
This is truly the best timeline, what a great flippin' joke.
Tom crooked... Time to con you of every bells.
Amazing how Animal Crossing is so popular, Tom Nook’s fraudulent schemes are deemed serious enough to land on the front page of the most well-known financial publication. Crazy.
@westman98 Neither has ours. It’s only in a recession because tons of people forgot that it’s unsafe to work. In a few months, the economy will jump back to normalcy
As funny as it is, I really prefer if news sites that don’t have a section for gaming refrain from even mentioning that word
Awesome! I love to see when resources like the one listed, loosen their tie. It would be nice to know, although we will never know, who their happens to be a gamer and hence the article.
FT finally discussing important matters.
@RupeeClock they time travel on Wall Street?
@AlexOlney Its absolutely perfect. It can go with either sex, be classy, or even be used for raunchy purposes. Truly, a peak in naming.
@datamonkey
Yes, clearly. How else could they know the best times to buy or sell, suspiciously before something goes bust?
Good for the FT for showing a sense of humor in these scary times.
@flagloverNZ Got a like for the Greek flag.
Lol this is hilrious.
And as for Robin Wigglesworth, I wonder if they're related to Smiths Wigglesworth.
I've saved 25% of what I need to pay off the basement addition in my house.
I KNEW that raccoon was secretly bent on world domination....WhO's ThE cRaZy OnE nOw?!
Tom Nook 2020!
Maybe I'm blind, but i actually don't see him on that cover.
I like to learn something new
Wow. Actually read that article, and this really is interesting. There are times where a virtual market place is actually taken seriously. Oh god, who remembers the whole hyperinflation of the marketplace for Gaia Online? That actually became a subject for academic study if I recall right.
Let the implication sink in... Tom Nook's practices being taught seriously in a classroom.
Seeing Animal Crossing being discussed right next to an ad for an overpriced wrist watch is a bit surreal.
i never heard of Tom Nook to refereed to as a raccoon overlord. now that he made it into a "real" newspaper instead of some in-game magazine from another game. i guess it must be coming true.
I guess I wasn't really thinking when I was expecting his picture on the cover... 😂
Celebrating tyrants, sounds like modern society.
“Alarm bells for treasury”. Clearly the stalk market is crashing, which is having repercussions on the United States of Animal (Crossing)
"It’s a change to keep the game realistic"
Because what a game about living on an island with anthropomorphic animals, with a raccoon landlord and a dog that can play a guitar needs is realistic interest rates. Otherwise, it's fantasy and that just ruins the immersion... 😂
@Mountain_Man and that's not even mentioning the fact that it's called L.U.C. Time Traveler!
Marty Nook is doing an excellent job with my money. He just cleaned 1.75 million bells for me.
Good that the article included the real reason at the end - to prevent "cheating". Not sure how Nintendo couldn't see how people would exploit the interest rates and time travelling. Surely the game can detect the system clock has been changed and then penalise the player. I'd issue a warning once the date has change, which would lock players in their home for a week, and I'd remove interest altogether.
Bill who? Move aside, here's Toom Nook!
You're a Nintendo publication, you should know this. He's not a raccoon. He's a Tanuki
