Swordshield

Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for 30th December - 5th January, revealing that Pokémon Sword and Shield is still at number one as we enter the new year.

Pokémon's latest entry has held top spot ever since it launched in mid-November, comfortably holding off the competition each week. The two titles have now surpassed three million physical sales in the region, which incidentally means that they have now outsold evergreen smash hit Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (in the physical market, at least) and are nearing the lofty heights of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Here are the top 10 (first numbers are this week's estimated sales, followed by total sales):

1) [NSW] Pokémon Sword and Shield (Pokemon Co.) {2019.11.15} - 196.925 / 3.185.059
2) [NSW] Luigi's Mansion 3 (Nintendo) {2019.10.31} - 52.434 / 558.432
3) [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) {2017.04.28} - 52.195 / 2.711.204
4) [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) {2018.06.21} - 46.963 / 1.192.902
5) [NSW] Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 (Sega) {2019.11.01} - 44.605 / 239.733
6) [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) {2018.12.07} - 43.274 / 3.496.326
7) [NSW] Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training for Nintendo Switch (Nintendo) {2019.12.27} - 41.455 / 76.151
8) [NSW] Super Mario Party (Nintendo) {2018.10.05} - 37.903 / 1.301.613
9) [NSW] Fishing Spirits: Nintendo Switch Version (Bandai Namco Games) {2019.07.25} - 30.705 / 367.700
10) [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo) {2019.10.18} - 30.432 / 526.071

Hardware sales appear to be unavailable at the moment, possibly owing to the fact that these chart statistics have been delayed thanks to the holidays. Hopefully, Famitsu's hardware sales data will resume in the next chart update.

Instead, we'll leave you with the fact that a mighty 26 of the top 30 games this week were on Nintendo Switch. As PS4 starts to wind down ahead of the PS5 launch later this year, we imagine the Switch will continue to dominate the Japanese chart throughout 2020.
