@Nintendo_Thumb Lesser known fact. Popular games are popular for a reason and sell well for those same reasons. Of course not everyone has the same ideas about what is “good”, “bad” or niche. I like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde on NES but I know for a fact I’m in the minority of those who think similarly. Selling the games individually outside of the service isn’t going to hurt then. In fact it could be as simple as adding them as optional DLC on their respective store pages like every other game with dlc packs.
@Bass_X0
Granted it’s a great deal if you are taking advantage of everything on offer. For those that don’t however it’s a bad deal. Options. Options are never a bad thing. Individual custom made libraries that are aren’t tied to the service has some merit. You can buy only what you want and if Nintendo truly wishes to build in the account system promise allow our purchases to transfer to the next generation and so on.
@InTree Besides I’m sure most wanted a totally different service like all the games on all the consoles so far all at once and just picking and choosing what you wanted to play. Not the drip feed for the umpteenth time.
Id rather purchase and own the individual games forever regardless of gen going forward. Just like I didn’t have to repurchase my nes and snes games when I got a Retron. It should be a simple matter of transferring VC to switch and so on.
@InTree I’m not most. Kinda hard to see value in an online service when I don’t play online. Thing is I wouldn’t rebuy. I’d sit on it and plainly tell them I purchased them once so why do I need to again. I’d buy the newer titles that I couldn’t access before and wanted to play easily. In fact they should’ve took a pace from apple and Sonys playbook about transferring content.
@Bigmanfan They could allow us to transfer them ourselves. Back it up on a pc or the like then transfer it to the new system. Of course if it’s a proper account system then we shouldn’t really have any issues. As far as I can see there’s no difference in buying a piece of physical media and using it in all applicable devices for one price and its digital counterpart. Same logic really should apply to both.
@Mgalens Exactly. Plus why should I even have to sub to an online service when I spend the vast majority of my gaming offline? I wouldn’t even use the price of the admission! Online multiplayer? No. Cloud Saves? No. DLC (which can be owned separately not exclusively to the service? No. The only part I’m interested in is a self curated library of games that I’ll never lose access to and have year after year whenever or whenever I want to play.
@Bigmanfan
You do need the internet. You have to check in every 7 days. I’d have access one week and then the next it would be gone until I went to public WiFi again. Every Saturday it was the same thing. I’d be on public WiFi for most of the day and open and close the libraries constantly but it never wanted to perform one UNTIL I was home that night with no internet connection and I wasn’t about to make a special trip just to access them again.
You should certainly be able to transfer certain purchases like Virtual Console titles and the like. It’s no different from buying a retron and playing nes and snes games you already purchased. And the service for all the libraries is $50 a year!
Netflix has movies it can add all the time and they are streaming. NSO retro libraries are by their nature finite as they only have maybe a few hundred or so games on each platform and that’s it. Unlike Netflix the consumer doesn’t get to pick and choose you either get all of them or none of them.
My main point of contention is there is no option to purchase them outright and play offline. I had the best time with the VC on 3ds. Being able to go to a WiFi hotspot a few times a month and buying games and playing them basically anywhere I wanted and didn’t have to be tethered to an online service. I had a similar experience with the psp and vita. Had Nintendo had crossbuy from 3ds to switch like Sony had on all its platforms we would be miles ahead and we wouldn’t be in this situation. You should own your digital content. To me it’s no different from buying a retron and using the games I already have and just playing them on it. I didn’t have to buy my games again so why do the majority of you accept it as that is the way it has to be?
It would really help things run more smoothly if they focused on unannounced games instead of spending so much time on things that are out in just a month or two.
@LastFootnote So they acquire more licenses to put those out. With the way they’ve been slowly releasing them if they focused their lawyer team more on the licensing end and less on idiotic lawsuits they’d likely curb the lawsuits altogether.
The way the service is doesn’t make me want to have a long relationship with them. If they allow purchases of individual games instead of forcing consumers who don’t play online to sub to the service we will talk about it.
@Mrkittyhead
Except for 5 which had original bosses wilys revenge through 4 use robot masters from the nes 1-5 along with a new sub boss type called the mega man killers (enker, punk and ballade) along with a warped version of megaman dr wily reprogrammed from the future renamed quint. So it’s recycling robot masters and adding new story elements.
I know I sound like a broke record but seriously why can’t we have an option outside of subscribing? I’d rather pay a few bucks a pop for games I’ll play regularly than pay $20 or even $50 a year for a lot of games and an online service that I never use at all!
I love Toriyamas style (rest in peace) but the NA is my vote. It evokes a dragon’s treasure horde with the assortment of weapons on display against a fiery background. It has more sense of mystery and adventure than the JP box art.
A remake (just like in its name) completely reworks the game. A remaster is simply making it look better (possibly some quality of life improvements that were missing added but keeping it in essence the same story and game).
@shgamer So it’s on a deep sale. So? I have a physical copy but given it may not be selling so well throwing it on sale for practically nothing is just a way to bump up it’s visibility.
@Lightsiyd It would certainly be better for the consumer to have a physical that’s complete and can be trusted to be as such. The other ways of codes in boxes is such a waste of plastic and mandatory downloads are a scummy way to sell large memory cards.
@Denoloco They should tell them if they go for a physical release they have to make it complete on cart with no mandatory download to play. Then if it’s 16gb and they want to use a 2gb to be stingy then Nintendo would refuse it.
Now if they would just force studios to use the appropriate size carts instead of having over half be downloaded into memory for many releases like the Batman Trilogy, GTA Trilogy and the MGS Vol 1. Or at least have multiple carts in a box of the games are too big to fit into one. (Seriously there is lots of space in a box for several so why not use all the available real estate space when needed)
These losses are purely subjective. “Oh we expect this game to sell 500,000 copies!” “Oh no it’s a failure it only sold 400,000!” “The consumers don’t like our games so we will cancel projects! Wah Wah”
@Bass_X0 Guess that’s a perk of having cheap Internet access at home. I don’t have that luxury. I’d gladly buy the titles individually like I did in 3ds VC and play them offline anytime given the option.
@Bass_X0
A moot point if you buy lots of games. Being able to play them at anytime without needing to connect to the internet for a weekly check in since you’ll lose them if you don’t even if you pay for the most expensive tier would be preferable since that’s what VC allows.
@JohnnyMind I don’t want to give strangers money for an online service I don’t use since I don’t have internet access most of the time (not that I ever cared for online play anyway). VC was miles better since you could pick and choose which games you wanted unlike this drip feed that some random employee thinks everyone wants.
It still boggles me that they still don’t have an option to just buy games on the service. At least then if you let your subscription lapse you could still play the games you wanted.
The only thing and I mean only thing that would cause to to consider is if we can say we own the games and that on future consoles we still have access to them on the newer hardware. Until that day though physical is forever.
None since I’m not subscribing to the online service since I don’t play online. Now if I could buy them individually I’d probably spend most of my time with Killer Instinct.
@StarryCiel Thing is you can’t play the translation on switch. To do so would mean downloading a rom of the game of the internet which Nintendo frowns upon. So wouldn’t it just make more sense to have an actual localization to sell instead of threatening lawsuits?
If we could buy the individual titles outside of NSO I wouldn’t care. But seeing as a subscription is needed it bothers me. In fact the whole presentation outside of SMT 5V was a let down. (Epic Mickey? Why not Disney Afternoon Collection?)
Just being able to purchase individual titles would be welcome and another level of revenue for Nintendo. Unlike in olden times you can look up reviews, videos screenshots and more to determine if you’d like a game or not. Why experiment? Thing is gamers want access to games they want. Not access to all games. That’s the difference.
