Update: Fri 20th May, 2022 11:15 BST: Well folks, it's real: Ugly Sonic makes a pretty substantial cameo in the new Disney+ movie, Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
You can check out the screenshots below, but let's go over what actually happens in the scene first (SPOILERS, we guess?).
It takes place quite early on in the movie with Dale, having undergone "CGI Surgery" (urgh), setting up a convention stall alongside some other 'washed-up' cartoon celebrities, hoping to once again step into the limelight.
One of these celebrities is, of course, Ugly Sonic, who optimistically states that the crowd will "like me for who I am", before signing an autograph for a couple of chuckling teenagers. Ugly Sonic notices that the fans laugh at him, exclaiming "oh, they're laughing at me, I know that. You can't hurt my feelings if I'm in on the joke!"
He then tells Dale that he's lining up to star in a new show in which he takes part in ride-alongs with the FBI, titled "Ugly Sonic, Uglier Crimes". Dale then proceeds to stare at Ugly Sonic's 'human' teeth, the camera panning uncomfortably close to his mouth. And that's about it! It's a fun nod to the scrapped Sonic design, at least, and we like to think that Ugly Sonic is sitting comfortably in the back of an FBI vehicle as we speak, munching on a bag of Doritos.
Original Post: Wed 18th May, 2022 04:30 BST:
The original Sonic the Hedgehog movie made headlines for all the wrong reasons when it was initially revealed. Fans were quick to call out this disturbing-looking version of the blue blur. Fortunately, Paramount redesigned him and the "ugly" design was axed.
While we didn't expect to ever see this version again, for unknown reasons, it's been discovered the new Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers movie on Disney+ has revived this particular version of Sonic with human-like chompers. In an Empire review, it's revealed ugly Sonic is one of the funniest highlights of the entire movie:
"But the funniest moments feature one who’s never previously made it to the screen. Yes, brace yourself for ‘Ugly Sonic’, proof that hedgehogs with human teeth are not always a bad idea."
According to SlashFilm, ugly Sonic is voiced by comedian and actor Tim Robinson. Here's a trailer for this upcoming movie:
Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers will be streaming from May 20th On Disney's subscription service. Will you be watching?

So is the Sonic fan base going to have another gaslighting cult that defends that ugly design or does it already exist?
I'm still flabbergasted that a bunch of people gave the all-clear for that abominable design.
I really am happy about this, everyone agrees, its garbage, so, why don't we use that in another movie, where it can be used as a joke, I love it and I can't wait to see the film!
Well now that ugly design will be as iconic as Sanic.
I’m still convinced they made that design on purpose to get more attention for the movie.
Now I really have to see the movie, not just for RR (though there is that too, its been ages since I watched anything RR), I wanna see the cameo just for the laughs.
Also, according to Slash Film's review, "Ugly Sonic" is voiced by Tim Robinson.

I'm still mixed on this whole affair. If they were going to bring back rescue rangers, why do the whole Who Framed Roger Rabbit thing? I'm going to reserve judgment until I've seen the movie, as it should be, but skepticism doesn't begin to describe what I feel about this movie.
EDIT: Okay, now that I've seen it, I give it a 6. Once I fully accepted that this was not going to be the Rescue Rangers film I wanted and shut my brain off, I started enjoying the film. It was weird seeing so many properties that Disney doesn't own, including Ugly Sonic. Ugly Sonic became my favorite part of this movie, and I'm looking forward to Ugly Sonic: Uglier Crimes.
No chipmunk voice = Blah
Added with terrible Sonic design = Disaster !
@PBandSmelly I think I found the movie
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dumb
At least it didn't go unused. A good example of ironically good.
@WeLiveInASociety yes! I said the same thing
@Coolmusic I've added this to the story.
^Cool, thanks.👍
The cel-shaded CGI here looks like Berserk 2016 or EX-ARM.
@SalvorHardin Honestly as I don't liked that design I think I would actually not mind if they wouldn't replace it, I think it was bad, but in bizarre and hilarious way.
To be honest, I will watch this movie now as it looks like a more up to date Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Love the way all the different animation styles are mashed together
You've made me lose 2 minutes of my life searching for it, could've given a time stamp.
@Serpenterror Probably, it's will become iconic like a Bad Box Art Mega Man(or NA(or N.A?) Rokuman in Japan) from Mega Man and Street Fighter X Tekken.
I loved Rescue Rangers as a kid, watching reruns of it on the Disney Channel, so I'm looking forward to the movie. Although, I'm more interested in how they are going to implement the Mane Six from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic into the movie, as they are apparently also going to be in the movie.
@Snatcher Meanwhile in a similar fashion Disney replaced the generic ugly ponies from the first trailer, with the official My Little Pony designs, lol. Funny how it worked out again.
@AstroTheGamosian I haven't seen this show in so long. I have the original series on Disney+ as I type this, totally remember whenever Monterey Jack went "cheeeeese". I'm excited for this movie, let alone curious about all the cameos.
This would have been great, but I'm salty that this reveal leaked out. These are the types of surprises I like to see without being spoiled. Not cool internet!!
I'm sorry but movies like this always make me wonder who they're supposed to appeal to. I watched Rescue Rangers as a kid, loved it. Now i'm 31. This movie, like soooo many others is like "your favorite characters are back but this time they're cool and edgy! Just like your 13-16 year old self wants it!" - but again, i'm 31, so what gives? Either make a story in their universe, best would be in the same style as the old movies, or make it into a movie that can be taken seriously while still being family friendly and enjoyable for all ages like idk...Zootopia for example? That one's mature enough to be taken seriously but it's definitely a welcoming movie for kids as well.
Or am i just not a fan of this humor? Seriously i can't see how fans of the original would like this, but i am curious and shouldn't judge any further beyond these first impressions without having seen it of course.
@WeLiveInASociety They actually lost a lot of money for merchandising that had to be scrapped for this design so if it was fake they sure lost a lot of money making it
Everything about this Rescue Rangers movie looks fantastic. Its meta upon meta for the fans and clearly takes the mickey out of terrible CGI remakes of old properties, and cheap, rushed computer-animated kids movies. I actually remarked to a friend of mine after seeing the first trailer that it would be perfect to include "ugly" Sonic in it, for that exact reason. I'm slightly astounded Sega/Paramount let them do it, but I applaud them for laughing at themselves, understanding the context, and joining in the spirit.
I have a feeling some won't "get it", others will think its too snarkey and trying to be clever, and others will think its the best thing ever. I expect to be in the latter. Considering its a Disney movie, and having worked for them freelance on and off for decades, I'm surprised just how "on the edge" some of the criticism of the industry (and other companies' properties) is. I don't think there's a chance in hell this was ever going to be allowed a theatrical release. But as a Disney+ exclusive that mostly only people in their 30s-40s will care about or understand, its perfect.
This Rescue Rangers film will be either rubbish or rubbish that is so awful but still can get some unintentional laughs out of you. Anyway, it will never be as good as the original Rescue Rangers, because that show was made with a bit of love and care. Not like in this modern generation, where you can tell that most media was made as an act of revenge, hate, or disgust for the old property. But, what can I say? This is the modern generation. No respect at all.
Why did they even give him teeth in the first place
@GMACGAMER1234 Anatomical correctness? Or attitude.
Hope there's a reference to the Nes game
@Murkyelm Huh, didn’t know that. In that case, whoever approved that was on something.
@Sunsy Gadget Hackwrench was always my favorite. I won't lie, I had a huge crush on her as a kid. Still do, in fact.
@DarkTone There is. It was shown in another trailer.
Was really hoping Gadget, Monterey Jack and Zipper would have bigger parts in it. Seems they'll only be shown briefly based on the trailer. (looked up the cast and they are in it).
Rescue Rangers movie sounds hilarious. Popstar for kids. I'm in

@Delineman is knowing a single cameo going to ruin a kid's movie for you because man journalists are the least of your problems if so
It's even worse than what I imagined.
Wow! I'm surprised that he is somehow looks even uglier than the proposed Sonic trailer...
I love how self aware it is, the teeth was a big no for people! I love it, and they made him look worse LMAO>
@Delineman Chill out dude it was just a cameo, plus this was known from day one as it was leaked when the first trailer dropped, it was a review, a actual source, there not really spoiling anything if it was in a review.
You know what? Technically the third Disney movie that's featured Sonic the Hedgehog.
There’s something oddly commendable about the Sonic brand’s ability to redeem its many missteps them by running them through Dr. Robotnik’s Meme Bean Machine. You won’t see Illumination referencing Hotel Mario.
@NEStalgia Those needlemice are so cute!
Sorry, but this looks better and better the more i find out about it.
I do know some commercials for Huawei TVs use Ugly Sonic to sell their TVs. Even though these commercials were after the actual movie came out with the redesigned Sonic.
HBO Asia (for both streaming and TV broadcast) also uses Ugly Sonic for some advertising for the Sonic movie.
The community showing signs of body shaming here.
Smdhmd, smgdh
Will be a movie I watch and end up falling asleep to 30 minutes in just like the Sonics whenever the alternative sites get it up later today. Can't say I've retained much enthusiasm for the chipmunks over all these years.
@KayFiOS it's so weird, because I don't think a RR animated movie With touched up visuals would do that bad! And there's so much lore, and stuff. This could be Indiana Jones for kids if they wanted to!
And to who are they marketing this burnout story?! Not the kids obviously!
I'm really looking forward to this movie, it looks like it'll be fun
“It takes place quite early on in the movie with Dale, having undergone "CGI Surgery" (urgh)”
What’s ”urgh” about that? I found it funny.
Nice spoiler, thanks.
Ew....!!! 😫😫😫
That entire movie is a big "but why tho"
I don't know what they're trying to achieve. A more cynical Roger Rabbit?
I already don't like the looks of movie it screams cash grab i love original cartoon from looking at trailers its trying be who framed Roger rabbit and It doesn't work I'm not looking forward to this just looks painful feels insulting to the original cartoon.
@Silly_G Well, considering that The Smurfs movie was green-lighted as weel, i wasn't surprised at all... companies just think that realism = money machine (children want Sonic to be real, right?) while ignoring the uncanny valley
See, using it in this way as a meme is funny. It wasn’t funny when they wanted this design to be in the proper Sonic movies.
Hahaha, that's actually pretty clever, and a good reuse of an animation asset they probably spent a lot of time and money on.
@WeLiveInASociety this is exactly what happened
There’s magic realism, and then there’s creepy realism 🫣
Ok, kudos to the Sonic team for allowing this and having the self deprecation to go all in on the gag. Pretty good.
I would watch Ugly Sonic, Uglier Crimes.
We're never going to forget about this are we 😅
@Hydra_Spectre I think they make marketing materials way in advance of the movie release (hence why there was loads of merch made with the Ugly Sonic) and those companies/Paramount didn’t want to spend the cash to remake the ads they’d already made once they redesigned the character
That closeup of his mouth is giving me the creeps, though.
Never has a movie interested me this little and then made it worse by a PR stunt like that. Yeah no.
The posters behind him tell me that whoever made this scene is a true Sonic fan....
Thats actually pretty genius. LOL
I dunno. I have yet to watch the Rescue Rangers movie, but anyone who would defend this version of Sonic might wanna get tied up like Maddie's sister was in the first Sonic Movie.
That's not ugly Sonic! ITS FREAKING ABOMINATION SONIC
I got the scene - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GTXOzFT6UE
I wanted a cut of the first Sonic movie featuring one of the original designs, this is the next best thing.
In Disney’s video game crossover movies, Sonic shows up.
In Disney’s animation crossover movie, Sonic shows up.
Icon
I love all the meme pics in the background. This is shaping up to be interesting satire. I can’t watch a lot of that type of humor but it has been a while so I will give this a go. Even if it had been straight laced the mix of animation and live action might have worked given that the rescue rangers sometime directly helped humans and were not often accepted or understood.
So… does the other Sonic also exist in this universe? Can the 3D surgery generate copies?
I will give them that Ugly Sonic gave me a chuckle. But I don't think I will watch the Chip N Dale movie, as it looks really bad. If they wanted to do a new Roger Rabbit movie they should have done Roger Rabbit and not the rescue rangers. The "handrawn" animation is not even handrawn -_-
I just finished watching the film, there's a billboard for a fake game called "Disney Afternoon Fight Fest," which shows the Disney Afternoon characters in a Smash Bros. thing. Personally, I'd rather see Capcom release The Disney Afternoon Collection onto the Switch. It's been TOO Long, Capcom! Make it happen!
He's got a beer gut.😂
Whole point of of the movie is characters becoming “washed up” years later. Have you seen what happened to Peter Pan? Lol
@Arawn93 It reflected the tragic story of Bobby Driscoll, the voice of Peter Pan. Once he hit puberty, Disney had no need for him anymore. He would die in his 30s after years of drug abuse, and wound up broke and homeless.
https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/peter-pan-bobby-driscoll-death.html/ Read for yourself.
This made my YEAR.
The fact that Paramount and Sega gave the All-Clear for the good of the fans is really heartwarming.

I am in tears dying laughing about this 😂😂😂
This is awesome. That thumbnail is so meme-worthy.
Just finished watching the movie. It was a lot of fun. Ugly Sonic was easily the best thing. A lot of heart went into this. It was nice seeing a Roger Rabbit style movie again.
They should be ASHAMED of themselves.
@Royalblues
Except this movie was written, directed and acted by comedy geniuses. Also there are a ton of cameos, and gags about a ton of properties not owned by Disney and not on Disney+
@WhiteTrashGuy
I liked seeing the small bottle of DIP in Sweet Pete's tool bag

I watched this movie tonight with my family, and we all loved it. My wife and I were both Rescue Rangers fans as kids, and it had plenty for us to enjoy, as well as for our kids. Just a fun movie.
@steventonysmith Don't make fun, Pastagate is REAL!
Comes close to the old Chronic the hemp hog
Loved the Rescue Rangers film! It was surprisingly a very good comeback and felt very substantial. If you only seen the trailer, the movie itself was better than expected. It was quite solid and well made to please fans who grew up with this wonderful Disney Afternoon series and the Capcom games (which by the way does make an appearance), while at the same time to help introduce audiences who are new to Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers. You definitely see the effort and hard work put into making it, similar to how they did with the Sonic live action films.
@steventonysmith
Yeah, that was excellent. Had to rewind it to show my wife.
There were certain non-Disney cameos that really took me aback, although I was spoiled about Ugly Sonic quite a while ago.
From my perspective, this movie absolutely does not belong in the same breath as Roger Rabbit. I don’t think this movie is anywhere near as good, but, hey, I smiled a few times!

The movie was really fun, definitely one of the most meta films Disney has made
Thanks for the spoiler, NL; I appreciate it.
This actually makes an uncompelling movie compelling to watch. To me, it shows there might be actual humor in the movie - a very tall order these days.
After watching the movie, I can spoiler-free comfirm two things:
-Ugly Sonic is More than a Cameo, but not a major Character.
-They did him justice. It's perfect.
@KayFiOS Fair review, but I actually loved it. Strong 7. Maybe 8 with nostalgia glasses on.
The movie was unexpected hit for me! I went in expecting the worst and I ended up loving the movie! I’m not a comedy guy but movie made me laugh. Highly recommended! A must watch! Ugly Sonic was awesome! 😂😂😂

And here I thought we'd seen the last of him. Hope he never becomes a "thing" or popular
Removed - trolling/baiting
@JasmineDragon Probably inclusiveness? Maybe trying to promote the most basic of human rights- aka wokeness? The last thing people need is to be reminded that they need to be decent human beings because that would be shoving an agenda down their throats and taking away freedoms. We wouldn’t want that! 🫢
Watched the movie last night and thought it was really fun. This coming from someone who did watch RR as a kid and has been a fan of Chip N' Dale in general. I thought it poked fun at the show, while at the same time being a love letter to the show and the characters at the same time. But then again, I watched Rescue Rangers live and hadn't watched a lick of it since until it came to D+. So maybe there was enough time away from it for me to appreciate the humor about it. With that said, the commentary on the state of media in this irreverent way, while funny, is at risk of being overdone these days. But otherwise, I enjoyed it. I appreciated it's inspiration from Who Framed Roger Rabbit and has me wishing for a true sequel someday.
Edit: About the cameo, it was fun and funny. Like someone above alluded to, I'd call it an extended cameo as the scene is very substantial and not a "blink and you miss it" kind of thing. But Ugly Sonic is a hideous design and one of very few times I'm glad the internet lost it's collective mind over something silly.
@MagicEmperor Its sorta natural that people compare it to Roger Rabbit (and Space Jam 2) due to the crossover aspect of the movie.
@Tendogamerxxx Wokeness is not about basic human rights, its more of a 'here is something, and you can't be critical of it in any way without being a bad person for it.'
I agree with the second half of your last comment when its done in a hamfisted way.
@UmbreonsPapa Totally agree with your opinion.
This movie was surprisingly more enjoyable than what I expected it to be. Great cameos, fun story and just easy to watch again just for the Easter Eggs. A fun creative twist to a typical basic studio series remake. Lots of laughing! Bravo to Disney and my 90s nostalgia!
Ugly Sonic’s appearance was very meta and enjoyable!
I can see there was a lot of thought and care, as the film and movie’s cinematographer Larry Fong did an excellent job, in capturing the feel of what made Rescue Rangers so great. It exceeded my expectations as a Disney film.
@Tobiaku Right, yeah! I Get it. 😄 It’s difficult for me to put it in words, but the reason I think this movie isn’t comparable with Roger Rabbit is that, in my opinion, Roger Rabbit followed its rules a lot better than this movie follows its own.
Seen this movie twice so far. It’s so good. Really did the original justice while making something fresh and new. Ugly Sonic was funny along with a lot of surprise appearances. Possibly one of the best straight to Disney Plus movies released so far. Wish it was in theaters!
This is easily Disney+'s best original film so far, by a wide margin (not counting Pixar releases that were originally supposed to be theatrical, as they weren't made specifically for Disney+). Don't just poo-poo the film out of hand. Give it a watch. It's a lot of fun.
Disney ruined Chip N Dale. They are getting lazy.
Movie was really bad. Disney has reached an all-time low.
@StefanN I'm 37 and a fan of the original series, and I loved it. Not every animated movie has to have a serious storyline to appeal to both kids and adults. Great movies like "Tangled" and "Wreck-It Ralph" also pull it off well despite not being as mature as "Zootopia."
@DarkTone Yep, the NES game itself (with an NES) makes an appearance.
@Gelantious They do have smaller roles, but the other Rangers do get some more screen time than just small cameos.
@danemord They don't ignore it. They actually visit "Uncanny Valley"!
@BulbasaurusRex I'm not talking about this movie 🙂 (which by the way is a great movie 🍿)
@BulbasaurusRex I'm curious if the Japanese version replaces it with a Famicom. Though it would be unusual to see Americans in the '80s/'90s having an imported Famicom.
This movie was an awesome surprise. I enjoyed it.
