Monolith Soft's JRPG series Xenoblade Chronicles is known for revealing a bit of skin from time to time, and it seems the third entry will be no different. According to a recent ESRB rating, which was discovered earlier this week, players will need to be prepared for an adventure containing blood and violence, swearing and suggestive themes.
One section of the classification, in particular, that seems to be getting some attention in certain corners of the internet (namely Twitter) is the "revealing armor" - with character and creature designs that will feature "deep cleavage" and "partially exposed breasts". Again, there'll be swearing and violence as well. Here's the full summary:
Note: Spoilers potentially ahead
"This is a role-playing game in which players follow fighters through a conflict between two nations. From a third-person perspective, players complete quests and engage in melee battle against enemies (e.g., animals, creatures, human boss characters). Combat is highlighted by impact sounds, explosions, and cries of pain. Cutscenes depict further instances of violence: characters impaled by sword; a character shooting herself off screen; a man stabbing himself off screen. A handful of scenes depict blood (e.g., droplets falling from a wounded character; drips of blood on a character's face). Some fantasy characters/creatures are designed with revealing armor and/or anatomy (e.g., deep cleavage, partially exposed breasts). The words “sh*t,” “ar*ehole,” and “b*tch” appear in the dialogue."
While this sort of content in a first-party Nintendo release may be surprising to some, it's not necessarily the first time we've seen this kind of rating from the ESRB when it comes to a Xenoblade title. The original game had "partial nudity" and just below is part of the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 rating, which also contains similar but different "suggestive themes" and language:
"The game contains some suggestive material: female characters/creatures wearing outfits that expose large amounts of cleavage; camera pans and lingering shots on buttocks and/or breasts; dialogue that states, “You were staring...Pervert!” During the course of the game, characters make references to alcohol in the dialogue (e.g., “Booze! I want booze,” “Cheers love! Get me a beer.”), and patrons can be seen drinking alcohol in the background; one character is depicted with a cigar in his mouth. The words “sh*t” and “a*shole” are heard in the game."
It's worth noting that Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is rated 'T for Teen' - making it the same rating as the previous two entries on Nintendo Switch. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 has been given an 'M for Mature' rating in Australia, too. You can read more about it in our previous Xenoblade classification post.
Apart from this ESRB classification, the game's release date was pushed forward this week, jumping from September 2022 to 29th July, and pre-orders have opened at a number of retailers.
Will you be playing the third game when it's released? Drop a comment down below.

A game showing skin? Omg the horror. What is Ninty thinking releasing a game like this. Think of the children
More surprised that the swearing made it through lol but yeah Xenoblade showing some skin on their females is basically part of the franchise at this point. Some of the outfits in X were laughably bare.
@liljmoore More like "think of the Twitter mob"
Nintendo Life thank you for reporting on this. Boobs are important.
Wait..what?! This is iNsAniTy!! pRe-0rDeR CaNceLLed!
sigh. I was really hoping this wouldn't be the case. It is just unnecessary, largely unrealistic and distracting.
OK so it's xenoblade. Good to know.
Only till she gets her SSBU invite 🤣

Phew! For one awful minute there, I was worried everyone would be fully clothed.
they cussed on the xenoblade!!!
It's weird how this ended up being the case with this saga... the original Xenoblade for Wii had very little.
Let's start the Prude creepy complaints about another Xenoblade game why don't yah...
I mean, yeah, we all saw the girl ouroboros design in the last trailer, so none of that is a surprise. Xenoblade games tend to have some cheesecake-y designs.
But, the horror… nobody complained about shirtless Shulk and 6-pack Sephiroth in Smash
Interesting how they've gone from "a**hole" in 2, to "ar*ehole" in 3.
Conclusion? Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is set in the UK.
Wouldn't expect anything less from a jrpg
@YoshiF2 Because those are called "Power Fantasy"!
Sexualising male characters is somehow always empowering while sexualising female characters is inherently bad!
I don't make the rules.
(I usually just pity people who think that way...)
Darn, that's kind of annoying. I don't really mind characters with revealing clothing, but camera shots and dialogue specifically drawing attention to it makes it near impossible for me to take the narrative seriously. Any emotional weight 2 might have had died the second I heard the line "Place your hand on my chest".
I don’t mind, but it’s not my preferred direction for the series, given how interesting yet grounded the character designs in XC1 were.
Honestly, I like that.
Right but will the "Deep cleavage" be patched out later like another game that came out recently?
Fanservice outfits are nothing new to Xenoblade (or Xenosaga for that matter). It only became an issue due to all the whining and crying done over Xenoblade 2.
So it's being the normal way the Xenoblade series has been already? That's okay.
Can't wait for Twitter users to cry about this game because it shows some skin
So, it's good news then! I thought for a while that it may be censored but thank God, it will not happen.
Will somebody............ please think of the children.
oh no some mechas show some metal skin... hurry this will ruin our society and will make the wrong beauty ideals for our teenagers because showing stylized female bodies is bad and if you like it your a bad person...
@YoshiF2 zero suit samus though…
Oh great, women get oversexualized yet again (this is sarcasm btw)
@Rambler
why?

@Shambo HAHAHAHAHA. Boy did you miss the sarcasm of their post.
@Shambo i don't know how many false equivalencies i can count in this comment but it's concerningly high

Try to go though any forum, literally filed with people from twitter... sighn. I miss that small time era we had where we wouldn't be so prude, and sadly it's the newer generation that are becoming more like that.. and the old too. xD
Can't we just do it the old school way that is: if you like it, stay, if you don't like it, just leave, more fun to us that appreciate that thicc gravy.
@Kiz3000 joke's on you I guess, I thought it would be obvious that I didn't miss it, and even added some blatant sarcasm to it in the end... And on you, @Ralizah, I am 100 percent chill and going along in the 'protect the chiLLdren' joke.
Damn people are quick to go in offense mode and assume whatever supports that. But apparently you don't get my kind of humor. It happens. A lot. And people get mad about it, saying I shouldn't get mad about jokes, which I didn't...
@somebread it is meant to be, yet also to make you think about it, I won't even say in which direction, and on whose vision and actions. Just think.

There is a certain irony in the comments section already. If you think about it.
@LEGEND_MARIOID This legend gets it. Nudity sells. People clicking on articles to demonise that fact are the best consumers of it, keeping it going, and proving that it works, thus ensuring it will keep happening. Nothing wrong with nudity (what happened to that body positivity and no shaming of sex workers?), but there's A LOT wrong with how people act around it.
At least 3 doesn’t resemble a harem game like XC2, where the first impression was your protagonist is a teen boy running around collecting idealized women in bathing suits to use as weapons.
As much as I liked XC1 and XCX, I couldn’t buy into that XC2 premise, and skipped it.
I’m glad XC3 seems to tone the cheesecake level back down nearer that of the older games.
As an America, all of those curse words w/ the British accents just sound like comedy to me.😂
@Megaz23 Men are not objectified through sexual organs, but through power and money. There's plenty of objectification of men out there once you know what the women doing it are looking for in them. Hint: it's not their genitals, it's their usefulness to exploit to better themselves. Remember, this is in fact a sexist generalisation that is therefore untrue, but it is still based in some general 'truth'.
@icomma i like you're going that way, because i didn't mention anything of that x'D
@Matty1988 "And don't forget about me!" - Resetera
The fact that Arsehole appears in the script means another game full of British-isms!
Its kind of the norm for the franchise isnt it?
Removed - flaming/arguing
I don't mind really, unless we have camera shots directly pointing at them, then yeah it'd be a bit weird.
I'm guessing the people saying sexuality is unnecessary have never played a Bayonetta game. Just wouldn't be the same if she wasn't nakie half the game.
Never forget the bottom line of it all though, sex sells.
Good. Nintendo aren't giving in to easily-offended, fun-hating sour-pusses.

@Kiz3000
I’ve never had any complaints, until now. 🤷🏻♂️
We should celebrate the female body Anyone complaining is just jelly.
@Judgedean Indeed
I really don´t have anything against stuff like this, but the female characters in the Xenoblade games do seem a bit oversexualised to me
@icomma As a classic liberal, I am firmly in support of more in-game cleavage and general sexuality. Sex is part of life. It shouldn't be at the fore-front of everything, but it isn't the devil either.
Also, icomma, this is a Japanese video game we're talking about, and how are you framing this to be all about white men, especially when quite a few male characters were sexualized in this series?
Don't get me wrong, there are strong issues with race and gender and all that going on in the world, but how are you conflating having some sexuality in a video game with white male privilege? That's quite a stretch.
@Shambo The first comment was obviously sarcasm, yours however was not. Considering someone else called you out so I do not believe that joke is on me.
Sarcasm does NOT translate well to the written form unless you make it obvious.
To me it just reads like you are calling the original poster a degenerate for no real reason.
I think you guys forgot to turn off the ability to comment on this one NLife xD
when Monolith Soft is gonna give us the M-rated game they stated worked back in 2017?
I'm ok with this just as long as it doesn't go overboard and in Xenoblade it doesn't so everything's good.
There’s a middle ground to be struck between immediately decrying any sexual content in gaming as tasteless, and defending the big boobas in XC2 as anything more than shallow pandering.
Nintendo also funded the development of Bayonetta 2 and 3, so... moving on
Some people in this comment thread just crack me up I swear 🤣
And here I was hoping I'd be able to decapitate people, stabbing them in the gut and watching their intestines spill out like a normal sane person. Japan is just appealing to Japan. The games we like they see US as the weirdos for loving our murder porn, since they censor excessive violence and gore over there. Yet the way people talk about violent games in the west "yes more blood! Look at them get chopped in half!! Do the finisher where you impale someone with a pitchfork!" is personally more disgusting than seeing some breasts or butt on a screen. The double standards need to stop.
@Kiz3000 It might be a more unique brand of humor, I get that a lot. But just because I'm also partly serious while joking, doesn't take away from the fact that as a whole, it's still a joke, but one to think about. I know such humor is often even in spoken word misunderstood by people who know me well, all the more reason to not assume an offensive or defensive position, and first understand that you might have misunderstood. I am aware that I fit in badly with 'normal' people, but I find it very ironic that they label me dysfunctional ('autism spectrum disorder' they say) for it, they say I don't understand others, while I do, or at least always try, but humanity as a collective has long since passed the point of any reason, and they label all 'others' as something 'lesser', something 'wrong'. I'm not explaining my point of view because I think you're not smart enough or to belittle you in any way. If I thought that, I wouldn't bother explaining.
boob game bad.
@Kiz3000 largely unrealistic and distracting. That sums up 90% of everything in a videogame. If I wanted a realistic and undistracting experience, I wouldnt play videogames.
You know what, I'll but it even harder
@DiggleDog Basically this. It’s a complex argument usually reduced to a binary choice. It’s the exact same in every other type of media, there’s a huge difference between a movie like Under The Skin and something like Adventures of a Plumber’s Mate.
@icomma I like men and that still sounds incredibly uncomfortable.
@DiggleDog This sums it up perfectly. Bravo.
@Shambo Fair explanation. Apologies for getting the wrong end of the stick.
Removed - inappropriate
@icomma You perfectly described a dream I once had.
@icomma Not seeing how your hypothetical male character design is relevant unless Xenoblade Chronicles 2 featured any sort of representation of female genitalia. Or if they were "dripping sweat and blushing the entire time," lol.
A lot of you folks seem to think that game was WAY more pornographic than it actually was.
@icomma If you insist.
Yeah, no surprise. XB is uncomfortably hylersexualized anime cringe fanservice that happens to have a game attached. The games aren't half bad, but I can't get past the aesthetic these days.
Now I'm really feeling it! 😏
@Ralizah It's such a shame that this line of thinking (of XC2 being more pornographic in nature) stopped people from enjoying a game that goes into some heavy themes in what I consider very tasteful ways. Sure, there's a couple odd lines and like a couple actual gratuitous shots, but that's such a small part of this games identity. Some people also seem to forget a lot of Sharlas outfits from XC1 and some of Sevens. It's always been there but it's more a matter of the author/artist's intent, as well as not applying Western culture to Japan's.
I don't know how to do spoilers in NLife, so read the following at your own discretion, but XC2 analyses suicide, finding purpose, the burden of memories and how to deal with that, among other themes.
There's a whole character whose story arc is essentially about coming out in a world that doesn't accept them, but being able to do it and to fully accept themselves because of their supporting friends. If you look at their final design, one can say that it's pandering, which completely undermines the symbolism of that design.
You'd think they would've learned from Mythra's appearance in Smash Bros. as a spirit that sometimes, less is more.
Side note, I'm surprised Nintendo of America isn't trying to censor this game. Playing Xenoblade Chronicles X reminded me of a time when they wouldn't dream of having anime tiddie in their child-friendly T-rated game, and you couldn't adjust the size of your custom character's chest. I'd say there's hope that if X releases on the Switch in the future, they might bring the option back, but then again, the Switch version of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE was based on the censored NTSC Wii U version, even in Japan...
@icomma "Does that description make you uncomfortable at all? Would you still want to play this game as much?"
well, some people are kinky for that 🤷🏻♂️
Its hilarious seeing all the whining about a little cleavage.
Then again those people probably weren't getting the games in the first place.
I don't know the series that well, but are all of these things in line with the source material? From what I've seen of screenshots, it feels like the stuff they mentioned in this article would be out of place for a game like this.
Just like Star Wars...
Please think of the Jedi code!!!
The "M" rating should be changed to "M for Magnificent" because you know, um, it's not just "M" for "Mature" people. There are "Immature" people that want to play those kinds of games too. Besides, at least for me, seeing "Boobies" is "Magnificent". Hehe
And this comment section is why I sometimes hate the fact that Xenoblade 2 was the game that introduced most people into this series in the first place. People don't even get that the ESRB rating for this game doesn't mean the game will have 2's level of sexualization. The "Deep cleavage" is referring to some of the character designs, like Eunie, or that woman with the silver hair in the new trailer, who just have boob windows on their outfits. The "Partially exposed breasts" are obviously because of the Ouroboros form that's seen in the trailer.
It feels like Xenoblade 2 was a mistake, since it introduced people who went "I like big boob! This game like big boob! Me want to only play game for big boob!", then went and cried about Xenoblade 3's first two trailers not having that, saying that the game was "Censored", when it's not censorship if the designs are designed like this from the ground up.
Also, I find it amusing that people who didn't really like 2's Fanservice are being called "Twitter Users", when they really aren't. At least, I know I'm not. I'm not even against fanservice. It's just 2's designs took things too far, and I couldn't even play the game in docked mode because of it.
Thing is, we need to get back to when games could have this sort of thing in and it wasn't a big deal. I don't buy dedicated "fanservice" games (nothing against them, it's just not what I'm looking for), but RPGs feature rich worlds with all sorts of emotions in them. It's important that designers are able to make some parts titillating if they want without it being changed under the guise of "localisation".
@icomma
Men in this game also have swim suits, bare nipples and all. They also have incredibly unrealistic proportions. I actually went and played through the game and all of its DLC. It would help to at least familiarize yourself with all of the content before jumping to conclusions.
Also, you're the one making assumptions about other peoples' race, beliefs, and political standings, so I don't think you're in the position to assume that I nor anyone else on this board is ignorant.
This is excellent news. So glad they moved to ar*ehole instead of as*hole. I turn to Xenoblade to escape Americanisation.

I had really wanted to get into the first Xeboblade, but after seeing how utterly ridiculous the next two games are about all this garbage, it's really put me off playing any of them.
@Miu The funny thing is that 3 doesn't really cater to perverts. At least from what they've shown. We already know the "Deep cleavage" is just because one character has a boob window on her outfit, and then the "Partially exposed breast" is legit just the female Ouroboros design. I highly doubt anything in 3 will end up like it was in 2, given how the main character designs are way more grounded. Something on the level of 2's character designs would end up clashing heavily here.
@PtM Kind of, but not really. You technically don't need to play both 1 and 2 in order to play 3, but so far it seems like absolutely everything in 3 would go better if you played Xenoblade 1 and 2, given how the worlds are ending up fully connected in 3.
@Kiz3000 no one is forcing you to get it maybe because nintendo catering to more mature gamers not just kids for some of their games.
@Anachronism XBC2 was extremely emotionally driven even with that sort of stuff. I had no idea what I was getting into going in blind with that game, but it ended up being amazing. Pyra was one of the strongest characters too, and honestly as someone who doesn't like fan service in games, I stopped noticing it here because the experience was so good.
@Diogmites Then just say you don't like games with story or JRPG's if you don't want to play this then. Missing out, btw!
@MetalKingShield Good thing is Xenoblade, especially XBC2 does have rich worlds and deep emotional portions all the way through
@icomma mount your friends exists, complete with flop physics and is surprisingly not an adult rated game and there was no backlash when it came out so it seems it'd be perfectly fine if games included exactly what you mention. In fact I'd say that's something that's always been missing with duke nukem. With how many genital jokes he makes you'd half expect him to beat someone with it.
@PtM 3 has elements of both Xenoblade 1 and 2. Takahashi said you don't need to play the others to play 3, but other than that I personally highly recommend people do play the other two.
@PBandSmelly Eh, I feel like this one you'll still be able to play in front of others. The ESRB mentions "Deep Cleavage" and "partially exposed breasts", but we already know what both of those things are. The breasts thing is because the female Ouroboros, which is the thumbnail of the article, and the Cleavage is just because a character in 3 has a boob window on her dress.
@Miu if you have a problem with these type of games showing some skin then dont play them while others wouldnt mind it plus let me remind you not many people complain about extreme blood and gore shooting type games which i call hypocrites and by the way calling people perverts who enjoy these ecchi type games is just wrong.
@RiasGremory The thing is though, Xenoblade isn't even ecchi. The original isn't. X isn't. 3 really isn't at all. The only one that even really heads in that territory is 2, and only because of the character designs. The story itself isn't even something you'd find in an ecchi game. In terms of this, 2 is effectively the black sheep within the series.
@VoidofLight im not talking about extreme amount of ecchi just abit in these games but some people still complain about it
@RiasGremory I'm probably going to get myself in trouble for saying this but classing a game with excessive cartoon cleavage as "mature" is pretty laughable. In fact the way XC2 did it is pretty immature.
The Witcher series is a game with mature nudity. Xenoblade 2 is not and is complete fanservice.
@icomma I was interested in what you had to say, and even liked your initial comment. And then... you started spouting a well-defined, pre-masticated ideology, followed by an attempt to apply it in responses throughout the thread.
So, just before you ignore me or dismiss this comment, just consider for a moment: I've heard complaints from serious people about XC2 before (I haven't played it myself), so I was interested initially and open to your argument. But now, at least for this topic, I'm not. There is a reason people dislike puritans and other ideologues, and that same reason is why I stopped reading your messages in-thread. When you take that kind of rigid viewpoint, and start down the path of denouncing, or declaring "Group X is oppressed by Group Y, I must attack all members of Group Y!!!!1!", you lose some of the suppleness needed to actually convince people, assuming that's what you truly intended to do.
You may ignore or flame me now, I don't mind...
@Kiz3000 you forget nintendo is trying to cater more to mature audience then just kids so i think them letting xenoblade series have more ecchi elements is quite fine and beside if namco and others do for their rpg type games i say let nintendo do it as well its the reason why switch sales keep going up cause their catering to adults as well as not censoring as much like sony is doing these days.
Too little reveal for my taste. should show even more.

If it's constantly like with Pyra, then I'm out...
@CANOEberry I assume they are being sarcastic since their avatar is from an anime game full of fan service.
@Teksetter
After X got hit with the censorship stick, they had to win back the audience somehow.
@ItsATM Didn't this discussion already happen a couple days ago? I'm glad you got something out of it, but the story is so laden with cheap gags, fanservice, and other anime tropes that there was no way I could take it seriously. Pyra is admittedly a lovable cinnamon roll, but her personality's still generic as heck, as are the rest of the cast. They're basically a checklist of archetypes that were already severely overused long before the game came out. All that being said, I still really like Xenoblade 2 for a lot of reasons, but comparing it to the original is kind of like comparing Fairy Tail to Fullmetal Alchemist.
Am I the only one who found that classification description really funny?
Yeah, the first game barely had anything...if anything (at least on the 3DS version) Sharla had VERY mild jiggle physics...but that was it.
I'm fine with fanservice in games, but Xenoblade really didn't need it. For me Pyra was one of the main reasons I quickly stopped playing XBC2.
I don't even think X had anything aside from your own main character, and even then, when I chose the female character I just had bikini bottoms and a shirt, because shut up that's why. Better than Pyra's giant rack in your face 24/7, lol
@BloodyMurder the only character that was censored in x was lin the others still had revealing swimsuits/bikinis.
@RiasGremory That's where you're wrong. They also removed the chest slider in the character creator.
@RiasGremory Also yeah, they didn't just censor part of the character creator for the west...THEY REMOVED IT. So yeah it was more than just Lin, pretty sure there was something else as well.
@RiasGremory
Actually, there were several bits of censorship, not just Lin (who is a robot so it didn't matter anyway).
But it doesn't matter cause censorship is ALWAYS BAD and Monolith needed to win back its audience after that failure.
@Anachronism i forgot about that but it wasnt a big deal since some of the characters alrdy had nice racks alrdy.
@Joeynator3000 I don't think you have to worry about Xenoblade 3 having the same amount of sexualization as 2. Everything they've shown so far for 3 is more in line with 1 in terms of character design and tone.
@RiasGremory If a character creator won't let me briefly consider playing as a tiny redhead with a massive chest before eventually settling on the generic brown-haired white guy protagonist with Slenderman proportions that is my actual self, then what's even the point?
@VoidofLight but doesnt mean there wont be any fan service in the game which it will how much we dont know.
You know, news is information that is new... this is not new, i would never bet EVER that xenoblade will give their women proper armor.
Might be skipping this one.
@RiasGremory Eh... I personally can't see fanservice being in this game, unless optional costumes return. Like, the tone of this game is much darker than Xenoblade 2's tone, and the character proportions are fairly standard when compared to the original game. There could be like one character who's scantily clad like in Xenoblade 1, but I dunno. It'd just seem extremely out of place if there's anything sexual.
@Anachronism think about how much time people will spend trying to pick the right size for their characters chest and still cant decide which i do agree with monolith by removing that feature it would cause headaches down the road for them
@VoidofLight theres going to be fan service one way or another in xenoblade 3 i guarantee it especially since both worlds are one now and plus they want to cater to mature audience as well especially since namco,atlus and others are doing that with their rpg games as well.If theres going to hilarious scenes they could save the fanservice for those parts.
my god this comments section is a battleground
i mean as long as it isnt XC2 levels, we're all good
also civility people please this is a jrpg games are supposed to be FUN
Sex is less of a hang up in Japan, so this isn't that shocking. Blood and violence would be more upsetting. Besides, two was pretty bad when you think about it, so I don't see why they would do an about face for this one. Just the highlights ...
1) Gramps implies Pyra was considering seller her body for money. It's much more implicit in the JP version (I mean she says "There is something I can sell" and Gramps says "you don't mean your body do you?" so ... yeah, not a lot of room for interpretation. The English dialog just suggests that is what he's thinking.) Other then that I don't remember many changes.
2) Poppi is flat out, unashamedly, without question, no two ways about it, 100% a sex robot in both versions of the game. As in she is a robot, and she is designed for sexual pleasure. She is repurposed as a blade. Her design is based on porn (implicitly stated in Japan, implied outside of Japan) and she references how she is programmed with what men find as desirable behaviour. We first meet her set to "sexy school girl idol DTF" because, ya know, that was the setting Tora was using last ...
@LEGEND_MARIOID if you think about it?! The irony is so thick that you can taste it. So many weird mofos in here on both ends its insane
@HeadPirate yeah ive heard that sexualization is less of a big deal in japan, 100% evident by XC2's entire game lmao. it's really cool if you think about it because seeing other countries and their different ways of life and society is super interesting
@icomma honestly fair, internet people are gonna be internet people. What are your points btw, i kinda just got here lmao
@icomma i mean we all can agree and disagree like civilized people but wen some go out insulting or attacking others thats uncalled for which i agree with you on that everyone is entitled to their opinions.
Just look how many comments are already. You see? Breasts sell!
@RiasGremory I mean, I feel like there's tons of Fanservice, but not sexual fanservice. There's a ton of references to both Xenoblade 1 and Xenoblade 2 in the trailers, and a bunch of cool stuff that only people who've played both will understand.
But otherwise, most of the designs aren't even sexual. Being more mature doesn't mean you have to have sexual fanservice. You can tell a more mature story without swinging breasts in people's faces every five minutes.
There’s dozens of video essays that discuss the problems with Xenoblade 2’s depiction of female characters. They’re interesting.
People can remain ignorant about how women are portrayed in media if they want.
Some of you all’s comments are ignorant to the point of being caricatures.
Removed - flaming/arguing
God Xenoblade has such bad character designs. It's not because of the fanservice, because I thought the same thing about 1/X as well. Just so tacky, trashy and over-the-top.
@VoidofLight
So two things here.
First, I've read a ton of ESRB content descriptions and I can tell you that neither Eunie or Ethel's level of cleavage would have been mentioned on their own, they show like two square inches each. At worst they would have used something like moderate cleavage like you see in the description for Triangle Strategy, but Widowmaker from Overwatch shows more than both combined and it isn't mentioned at all there. It's probably safe to assume there's something more revealing in the game.
Second, I think you're glossing over the amount of revealing armors and swimsuits in XB1 and X. It's true that the defaults aren't very revealing, but a bunch of the alternate armors are, and you can play almost the entirety of XBX with a four woman bikini squad if you want to. Not getting those would actually be a departure for the series, not a return to the way things were.
Nothing against some boobies but there is simply no point in wearing less armor that protects you when fighting against other warriors. Maybe there is some general rule among these people that hitting boobs is considered a war crime, that‘s the only thing that would make sense to me.
@DSTG I mean, I'm not really glossing over that. It's entirely optional content, so it's not as bothering as how it is in 2, where everything was inherently sexual in design.
It could be that optional costumes returned, but I doubt it. If anything, it'll probably be something like that one female villain in Xenoblade 1, where she had a dress which showed her cleavage.
In my opinion making xenoblade chronicles 2 have a more anime style approach with fan service made the game sell better, it's the best selling single xenoblade game, sold double what the original did which had a bigger install base at the time of its release, sold more than the 3ds version as well and even sold more than the xenoblade definitive edition on the switch. So yeah I don't blame them from sticking with this style as obviously its more desired.
@VoidofLight
I mean even it being optional isn't fully accurate since XB1 didn't have fashion gear originally, so you could end up with bikini Sharla or Fiora just picking the armor with the stats you like best. I'd imagine a lot of people just stuck with those looks rather than picking more modest armor that they thought was worse.
I say you're glossing over it because your posts make it seem like those games had no sexual content whatsoever, when you could have your whole team in more revealing outfits than anything in XB2 (obviously the body proportions in XB2 are more exaggerated, but I don't think there's much in that game which compares in terms of amount of skin shown). Speaking as someone who enjoyed running the aforementioned bikini squad, I do hope it's in there in some capacity even if it's out of the way. It would be disappointing if something you've been able to do since all the way back in Xenosaga was removed thanks to the backlash to 2.
Bit of a shame about the language. I don't like to play games that have a lot of profanity--that's part of the reason I'm such a Nintendo elitist, lol. In the age of inclusivity and accessibility in gaming, it'd be nice to see more games and other forms of media like TV and movies have options to censor vulgarity so younger audiences, religious folks like myself, or those who are easily triggered by blood can enjoy it, too. If arachnophobes can disable spiders in games, there's really no reason devs can't implement censorship options for language and sexual themes. It'd open me up to so much new media I haven't been able to consume.
@Not_Soos Yeah I generally find swearing in games to be cringe too. There's better ways to ground and shock players that swearing.

This is Xenoblade. Had fanservice since XB1. Anyone actually thinking XB3 would turn away from that stuff after especially XB2 [biggest success in the series] was setting themselves up for failure.
Reminder the marketing trailers for XB2 for release didn’t even show even half the fanservice in that game.
Have a feeling the anti fanservice people are gonna be screeching again when XB3 drops and people dissect the game.
@Arawn93 As long as the fanservice is optional, I don't really have any qualms with 3 having it. I just rather not have it full force, ruining a very important cutscene or something.
@DSTG I mean, I have no qualms with fanservice if it's optional. I just rather not have the game zoom on a character's breasts during a really important cutscene. Yeah, it's true that Xenoblade 1's armor wasn't entirely optional, but then definitive edition introduced a system that made tons of people happy, since it let the fan service aspects be optional, instead of outright required.
Xenoblade 1 also didn't have cutscenes where the main focus was a character's chest or bottom, meanwhile Xenoblade 2 would pan the camera over towards that.
Well that’ll be a -1 point Con for the NLife review.
@Arawn93
Unfortunately I think VoidofLight is right about this; there might be a villain or two we haven't seen with some cleavage but I think that'll be about it. In my opinion any hope of significant alternate costumes went out the window once it was revealed that swapping around the Old Navy jackets was part of the class change mechanic.
@DSTG Yeah, that's a thing too. The alt costumes seem to be gone due to the class system. They could always do like what 2 did, bringing back the world of challenge and having skins that effect the space under the character's jackets, but I dunno.
@icomma Belated reply to your first comment, I agree wholeheartedly! I'm glad your perspective is in here, not quite the same approach I'd take but it's nice to at least see some dissent.
@VoidofLight
That's probably the thing I like the least about the game from what we've seen. Fanservice concerns aside I think these characters look super bland, and now we know that their designs were intentionally made super simple because they need to act as coat hangers for the dumb jackets. I'd rather classes not change their look at all if it meant we got more interesting designs.
@locky-mavo yeah I can see the con now
9/10
+Fun gameplay
+hours of fun
+good performance
-Has “problematic” fanservice
Can we have some nudity and drugs in this game too.
@DSTG Eh, I like their designs. They're far more simple than other Xenoblade games, but I kind of like the simplistic outfits. It's neat seeing more realistic jackets, shirts, pants, ad dresses in this world, given what Shulk invented in Future Connected.
This comment section is why the series continues to sell millions. People will buy it just to see beautiful men and women while constantly denying it on social media. Come for the anime people, stay for the emotional storytelling.
@JR150 Eh, I bought the series because I liked JRPGs and heard Xenoblade 1 had a good story. A lot of people joined the series this way too. With 2, a ton of people mainly joined because hot anime girls, and then ended up sticking around because of the story.
@JR150 Thats not a bad thing right? If they ended up staying for the story in the end? I know what got me interested was twos artstyle, then thats when I took a look at one, found out they are RPGs.
I just don't understand the headline? It just feels like its there to spark something TBH.
@Snatcher Well, it sparked something, so if that was the reason for it, it sure worked. We'll probably have over 200 posts on this one article before the day is over.
@VoidofLight It really did LOL. I just don't see the reason and pointing the game is gonna have skin, big surprise.
@Snatcher @VoidofLight
It's not a bad thing in the slightest because Xenoblade 2 has sold 2 million copies and is currently the best selling Xenoblade game (and best selling "Xeno" game as a whole).
While it's not perfect, characters like Jin, Zeke, Nia, and Malos made this game for me. I genuinely cried when I went back to rewatch the cutscenes. Pyra and Mythra also brought out my feels near the very end for spoiler reasons.
This headline is just here to stir things among people who don't wanna admit that Lanz and Taion are hotties lmao.
there is absolutely a subset of commenters guilty of this, and when people are so doggedly against something, so angrily defensive of this issue, it’s hard to do anything BUT go heavily on the offensive.
@icomma Thank you for replying, sincerely. I didn't notice that, but I think I'll take the time to reread the thread, including your comments, in that case. I'll try to be open-minded.
@River3636 if gta v can do it, why not xc3? 😂

XB2 has the main character making a sexbot that asks other characters for advice on how to get him to be romantically interested in her. If you ever saw the movie weird science it's like that but way worse, in weird science their sexbot doesn't want to screw them, she helps them act mature to get a real life girl.

@Not_Soos surprised you liked gravity falls regarding your religious standpoint, ending is satanic af lmao
@Arawn93
Regardless, that would be a total BS con.

@daveMcFlave theres alot of sensitive people on the right these days as well plus i agree with you theres problems on our side as well.
I just hope there is balance between beefcake and cheesecake. I doubt some sexualization is all that bad a thing as long as it isn't too often and shared between both sides of guys and gals.
@GinMiguel i agree and besides there was only a few scenes n the second one but not much that some of the sensitive people are making it out to be.
I regret that there will be adolescents as well as teenagers (not just adults), playing this and they wouldn't give a damn about their youngsters playing. And all I can think about them going "Mommy/daddy, they said a swear word!"
Granted it's Nintendo we're talking about. They don't give a rats a**. But if I ever had children, I would be extra careful with what my kids play (not counting Jr. of course) I'm just giving my two cents here. Not saying others can follow this approach. I don't even play games with these kind of obscenities. I strictly play E and E10+ games, with a slew few Teen games like Smash.
if this were a Sony game they would cover all the skin but thankfully it's not

@nowthisisepic
Nah, not really. I don't really like watching stuff with a lot of profanity, but I'm not one of those people who thinks Harry Potter is blasphemous or that Pokémon is demonic or anything like that. Bill Cypher was a cool villain, and he's also just fiction.
I'm not a fan of some of the comments Alex Hirsch has made about Christianity on his Twitter, but that doesn't really have any bearing on the show. Knowing his feelings about it, though, it does kinda make me grimace at Gideon sometimes. He's supposed to be a satire of TV evangelists ("I want y'all to rise up!" "Stanford Pines, you will pay recompense for your transgressions!") Don't get me wrong, there's TONS of crooked pastors out there, and I don't mind making fun of that, as long as they acknowledge not every person of faith is that way. But given Alex's views on religion, it almost feels a little malicious to me, I dunno.
Otherwise, there's not much else I would say I find problematic about the show.
Look...I don't care one way or another. I'm getting the game the second it releases.
@Mr_Fox If that's what you're looking for, try playing Voice of Cards on the Switch! It's a game with some VERY ripped and VERY almost-nude male figures, appearing both as playable party characters and as NPCs.
And for the record, I played both VoC and Xenoblade 2, and absolutely adored both games. But I'm also not bothered by a bit of skin. In fact, I find it hilarious!
I'm all for a little skin and some cursing.
@Mr_Fox Jokes on you I have already played games with unrealistic men lol.
They should do this for Lara Croft. Bring her back to her glory days.
Glad the culture of xenoblade is still intact
@CaptainCluck Nah, we don't need to go back to 'pointy boobs' Lara Croft.
Glad to hear the game has some fanservice atleast!
@Mr_Fox Why do you think people should be forced to play a game just because they defend ecchi character designs? Do you also think those who dismiss sexualized male characters as power fantasy should be obligated to play Senran Kagura? Do you think those who play otomoe games with fanservice should be forced to play galge games with fanservice or is it just a oneway street for you?
The only thing that bothered me about XC2 was how terrible the female characters were compared to the original. Pyra is almost a subordinate slave whereas Mythra is a petulant child. Their proportions then played off these sexist stereotypes.
Sharla and Meliá in the original are very strong, independent characters who are not defined by the men in their lives. You want to dress them in underwear or something tactical then it's entirely down to the player but you also crucially get to have Reyn show off his pecs for the whole game too. It has equality in the undressing.

@Mr_Fox No one said they wanted the game to turn into straight up porn lol, because if nudity is what your looking for, they have a variety of options. Did anyone even had big boobs in 3s trailer? Because I didn’t see it.
Btw which character are you talking about because it sounds like you have someone in mind?

@Mr_Fox Nah you're not forced to play XB2 and even then you're not forced to use the risque blades. Implying people can't be in to both male and female sexualisation is also kind of problematic dude
I want my robot cleavage and attractive cat girls in my Xenoblade game darn it. Don’t know why the big breasts are a big deal. Women are beautiful in all shapes and sizes. <3
Hey folks, just a friendly reminder to remain respectful while chatting to each other here.
Let's keep the conversation civil & on topic, thanks! ❤️
@BloodyMurder What game that got boobs patched out?
Honestly I felt embarrassed playing the last game in front of my family. Pyra/Mythra was just standing still but still bouncing up and down. It's just unnecessary. Feels like it's designed for horny teenagers/old men still in their parents basements. Aside from that and the horrible 'gacha-like' summoning mechanic it was a really good game. Bring on XC3

Good, leave the censoring to sony (and microsoft).
I'm part of the gang who thinks these kinds of outfits are stupid. Not necessarily because of the skin being revealed but because it just doesn't even make sense and it's way too obviously done for the sex appeal. And personally I think more clothing = better anyway (to a degree of course), I rather see characters in cool or cute outfits than see as much skin revealed as possible.
That said I'm fine with it if they do this kind of stuff. It's not for me but I can deal with it if it's present.
Good lord, looks like I've missed a bloodbath in here!
Big fan of the booba on a personal level, but with Xenoblade, I'm not quite a fan of the Path of Absolute Weebness the series has been on starting in 2. Maybe it'll at least be a step back from collecting Big Titty Anime Sword Waifus like Pokemon and the weird Jar Jar Binks Furby and his sex robot, but I was hoping for a true return to form.
Anyone stating that Xenoblade 2 was worse when it came to fanservice compared to the original... ummm Sharla and Seven's armour options would like a word. Did Xenoblade 2 pump up the anime inspiration? Oh yeah! But, it was not this embarrassing game to play in front of people. I think people really need to chill a bit. The costumes in Xenoblade 2 were no worse than what you'd see in American superhero comics.
PEGI 18 - contains deep cleavage, antagonist groin area bulges & scary looking beasts with a penchant for censored
It's good that descriptions are thorough for adults who may need to make purchasing decisions for the younger folk. So long as nothing gets censored, I'm game.
It's truly amazing how many posts have been edited out of the thread. It's just skin. You know... that stretchy layer of membranes that every vertebrate has, and needs to live?
Now you might guess, as I am a furry fan, I have some pretty uncommon ideas about the subject matter at hand (especially where Dahlia or Kora are concerned), but even outside of my own biases and proclivities, I recognize the problems that come from both sides of this coin - Too much nudity feels like disingenuous exploitation, too little feels like prudish overreaction. That's the GROSSLY oversimplified debate I largely see here, skimming through.
Truth is, the game makers and publishers will do what is culturally acceptable to them, and we, the gaming public, will invest or ignore as out personal tastes dictate. I was already looking forward to this game to begin with, and frankly, for me, personally, this revelation changes nothing. XC has always had a lot of flesh on display, but let's be honest here... if I want to, I can see all I want elsewhere. Naughties in video games are tame compared to what's readily available elsewhere in life (again, I'm a furry here, so I know what I'm talking about ), so honestly, what's the damage with some people?
As much as I didn't care for some of the sexualized blade designs (that includes the male blades as well btw), that's not what I'm most concerned about XB3.
No, what I'm more concerned about is the return of the field skill checks in XB2 making a return, mainly because it was nothing more than tedious padding that prevented you from proceeding further in the story and before someone points out the merc missions, keep in mind those were not available at launch which unfortunately I quit the game by then.
Welp. Won't be buying it, then. The lingering titty shots while characters were literally discussing death completely took me out of the experience of Xenoblade 2. I found it super distasteful and dropped the game after only a few hours. It bums me out because I loved the first game in the series. It's sad that they thought they had to add a bunch of sexual distraction to a perfectly good game series.
I'm honestly not surprised, though it is more than ironic in a time when so many folks are talking about the objectification of women that a lot of Japanese games/IPs get a pass for absolutely flagrant violations. Kitty ears and bunny ears galore, skimpy (or physically impossible) outfits, and let's not forget all those "waifus" that look suspiciously like eight year-olds. "Oh, it's just a Japanese thing", some folks might say as they try to laugh it off, but seriously, a lot of this stuff ranges from obnoxious to downright creepy to simply offensive. Funny that Nintendo delayed a cartoony strategy game like Advance Wars: Reboot Camp over concern for potential sensitivity regarding the war in Ukraine but they're fine with this stuff on a routine basis. Double standards is all I'm saying.
You know, my feelings wouldn't be hurt if they pushed this one back again to address some of this stuff. At least include an option for the ladies to be more tastefully attired, at any rate.
Omg, sex and violence aren't a part of the real world, what the hell were they thinking???
@WiltonRoots yes you did
@Savage_Joe one of those subjects that turns into carnage, just looking at the title I thought it would go off in here. I wasn’t wrong! Almost up there with Pokémon comment sections!
Well if it's given the appropriate certification then it can include skin.
@dew12333 I'm inclined to agree. Even if the game is rated T it's not like teenagers are not tech savvy enough to open Google and type in a little four-letter word and see as much as they want (before you say anything you too were 14 once and I'm sure you did it too) so it's not like they haven't see it before. I can understand if the characters in question are children or canonically underage, but then again I see what actual real-life teenagers wear on the daily basis so... yeah. If you're a parent and don't want your kids to see nudity or partial nudity that is cool check the back of the box. If you're an adult and a little too prudish to play a game because there could be a bit of skin... ummm... it's a Xeno game this has been a known thing about the franchise since 2002 where one of the lead characters was designed by an actual adult artist. Even Xenoblade 1 had the exact same scandalously clad characters.
If you don't like fanservice that's cool! We're all adults here. But, if you're openly acting as if Xenoblade 3 is ruined because there could be some skin... it's Xenoblade it's always been like this.
@RadioHedgeFund I dunno Morag was rather boss and Nia has a lot of pathos throughout the story. That and the Torna expansion had some amazing female characters like Lora. Though if you did not like Mythra and Pyra that is okay! But, I'd say Xenoblade 2 has a number of amazingly well thought-out female characters.
@TheMnassri
It was cleavage, and the game is the Pocky and Rocky Reshrined. The Japanese version is uncensored. The Western version is not.
Lines up with what I've heard from Japanese boards about them wanting to bring back "region locking" due to all the western censorship nonsense.
@Bret That game is like 300 hours, you barely even turned it on.
@SeantheDon29 To me it looks a lot like the Torna one. It had them too but they were way easier to get because there were no core crystals. Just the 9 characters.
@ArcticEcho Why would I want to subject myself to 300 hours of something that pissed me off in three?
Because getting pissed off with only 3 hours into such a long game is stupid.
I hope some of the main characters have ecchi costumes too. Will probably play the game, I enjoyed the other 3 Xenoblade games
The stupid amount of fan-service, the ridiculously long tutorials, and the overall pacing of these games are the reasons that this franchise just isn't for me. I have almost no tolerance for fan-service because it makes me so uncomfortable. Xenoblade is no exception.
@nowthisisepic
For real. I think the biggest thing that vibes differently outside of Japan is Poppie as a sex worker. It's minor, but because of some small changes to her dialog with the other female blades on side quests that heavily lean into questions about her free will and if she enjoys her programming (to which she always replies proudly that she loves what she is and would never want to be anything different) it's super clear she is an analogue for sex work in JP and not in other versions.
Sex work is legal in Japan (Effectively. There is one law that prohibits it but it's worded in such a way that actually stops nothing), and a modern push to "de-stigmatise" that type of work is pretty prevalent in all forms of media. A lot of localizations remove that completely, but at least in Xenoblade the parallels are still there is you look for them, it's just less in your face about it.
You see it in the Yakuza series as well, and even "puff puff" in DQ.
Pre-ordered and ready! Monolith is one of the very few studios I trust to deliver an amazing product from day one.
@Einherjar Well I don't fantasize running around shirtless, unless I were a wrestler maybe nor do I want to look like Arnold Shuartzinager. Why do some people try to deflect the whole male sexualization as a male fantasy when not all men care about that anymore then all women care about the body's they may or may not have.
I like beautiful and sexy female bodies. I don't think I am alone. I don't really need them in video games, but I also don't mind when they're there.
@ArcticEcho I do hope you're right. It's a shame to because I was enjoying the base game up until the skill check that appears after you fight the arachnid boss in the hollow in I think chapter 5? Seriously though, these need to be tied to chests and side quests and NOT story progression.
I like big boobs and I'm not going to apologise for that. If other people don't like that, then that's perfectly fine, but I do take issue with people saying it shouldn't be allowed. Society is weird.
There are real women with big boobs, and if you want to represent that, then go ahead. I don't like the idea of marginalising and ostracising them, and demanding things be changed just because some vocal people don't like it.
Now that doesn't mean that I'm comfortable with playing something like that in front of anyone, because personally I'm not, I'm insecure about that I guess.
People will always judge you no matter what you do, and think you're something that you're not based on one tiny interaction, such as how you look. This mentality is insidious, and we do it to each other all the time, even though we all know that we hate it when someone else does it to you. I wish we'd all be more aware of that.
@Wexter I wouldn't say that nudity would put me off a game, but in Xenoblades case it was the game that put me off the game. Although they did also do that Japanese thing of making one of the girls look far too young which I don't personally like.
Sheesh, this comment section was a warzone.
I enjoyed 2 but man it was one of those games where if you're a public living room tv player you'll feel uncomfortable with Rex looking like a preteen scoring 2 older girls and Tora being made a modern day otaku for some weird reason. I noticed the Torna dlc never had this vibe and revealing characters like Brighid never gave me a problem because it fit her character.
3 imo fixed this with a more mature looking cast like that of 1 so the only thing I hope they bring back is fashion gear which I dearly miss from 1 and X.
I thought we were over this, come on, Monolith 😐
@Juno335 agreed. 1 had its fair share of fanservice-y designs, but it was pretty toned down for the most part, and all of the characters in question were adults. 2 really pissed me off because it took the fanservice up to the max to appeal to gross “weebs” or whatever they call themselves, not to mention Rex being canonically 14?
I’m glad they’re going back to mature characters in 3 (from what I can see, at least) but this kinda sucked to learn about.
@Anachronism I honestly think that XC2 could have been so much better if they didn’t try to appeal to the weird part of the anime fanbase with the designs and innuendo
@BeefSanta first one had one or two questionable design choices, but for the most part, it was relatively tame. The second game is the one that completely screwed it up, honestly, especially since fanservice seemed to matter more than the actual story
@icomma wait hold up are you really that soft or you trolling?
@Kiz3000 The fact that you keep getting distracted by them shows where your priorities are.
And I can't believe women have breasts! I HATE women!
literally the only sexualized thing in the game is this... fake news guys... don't waste your time with this game if you hope they haven't bent their knees to the west.
