Yesterday's UK charts shared a familiar story in the UK: Mojang's Switch port of the hugely popular Minecraft is once again in the top ten, let alone the top 40. The game has been in the charts for a staggering 193 weeks in the UK, but this week sees the Java-created game breaking a pretty huge UK sales milestone.
Minecraft on Switch is now the third biggest-selling game on the console, according to GfK's sales figures. This comes from Gamesindustry.biz's Chris Dring on Twitter, who reveals that the sandbox game has outsold some Nintendo titans in the process. While Dring is unable to share exact numbers, third place puts it behind the two usual suspects of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons — some hugely impressive company to be at the top with.
This means that Minecraft has outsold the likes of Super Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, along with every single Pokémon game on the system. No wonder Steve made it into Smash!
The game's success shouldn't be too surprising on Switch, as it's one of the biggest-selling video games of all time — if you ignore every version of Tetris, it's actually at the top! And its success is unlikely to stop there, of course. Minecraft is hugely popular online and with kids — it's the most popular game ever on YouTube, after all — and we're due a big update sometime this year with The Wild.
Let us know your thoughts on this Zelda and Mario killer in the UK down below!

Homestly I’m kinda surprised, I never liked playing minecraft on console
It's a great game, but I always get bored real quick with it. And I'm not that much into crafting, so I usually stop after a very short time.
This is not surprising at all! Minecraft is for everyone
I never like Minecraft.
I only like Portal Knights and Dragon Quest Builders 1 & 2 on PS4.
Trued it for a few hours and got bored, don't see what's so special about it.
Yet I played dragon quest builders 2 and loved it, so maybe it's the visuals or just the fact there's no story to it
Yes it's £19.99 and its simple of course its going to outsell £59.99 games lol, never liked the game tbh but hey ho others do so great stuff
@moodycat try pc. I haaaate console controls but keyboard and mouse is buttery smooth
@driftydrift Lol, name one game that's not a full price release in the top 10 seller of any system that's not Minecraft. Low price doesn't equate to top 10 levels of performance.
Minecraft is so chill to play on the Switch, cause of the portable aspect.
Minecraft prints money. And it's the perfect model, because as kids age out of it, new kids pick up and enjoy it, and that keeps going on and on. I also appreciate Microsoft allowing it to be platform agnostic.
With most of the random games that explode into popularity and seem to stick around for years, I never understand what makes them stand out from the crowd when so many others fade into obscurity or barely make an impression to begin with, but I've owned Minecraft on four different platforms, and I don't even like Minecraft that much. That game has some weird subliminal effect where every few years I suddenly get the urge to build a house, get a full set of iron equipment, and then never touch that world again.

Friendly emoji: „I am ok with this.“
No seriously, I don’t know what to make of Minecraft being the bestselling game ever, but I guess I am just old. It’s ok.
I have never played Minecraft, nor have I ever played GTA V. The UK charts will never take me alive!!
Might be wise to add an extra few million stock of those Minecraft amiibo.
You know, just in-case....
I don’t play it but my kids love it.
I bought it on the ps3. Ps4. Wii u. Switch. iPad and somewhere else probably
Yoooooooooo. Favourite game right here.
Gaming is dead.
I don't intend to offend people who like this game, this is just my natural reaction to the article.
Ehh… I’m not fan of it. I never cared for the crafting mechanics, and building in it just doesn’t seem as rewarding to me. I guess it could be a good time waster, but I like my games to actually have goals and a real ending.
I tired the 360 version when it released and hated it, but was talked into getting the switch Bedrock version. I was surprised how much it hooked me as I played through the “story” with a friend to defeat the End Dragon and the Wither. Initially the adventure of exploring was what initially hooked me as I packed my gear, got into a boat and just wandered the world. Then it was building things (mostly like Lego sets from others designs) and then riffing off them. Now it is trying to automate resource generation (again by imitating to learn). The challenge being doing these things in survival and snagging all the achievements legit.
The nice thing is that I set the agenda or the goals and I take however long I feel like to do it. For a $30 investment I feel like I’ve gotten my money out of it.
@OcarinaHolder52 Well that's just rude and unnecessary.
@JJsNeighborhood you’re right, I’m sorry @Anti-Matter
It's all good, homie. People just have different opinions, that's all. You just gotta accept their opinions whether you agree with them or not.
