We're sure the delay of the Super Mario animated movie has sent shockwaves around the world. Originally on course for a 22nd December release, the film — starring Chris Pratt as the Italian plumber — has been pushed back to April 2023. In the early hours of the morning (for many of us!), Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri put out statements to deliver this poison mushroom to eager fans.
Miyamoto's statement, in particular, has fired up the inspiration of many online, because of course it has. In case you missed it, here's the statement from Nintendo's Twitter account:
"This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait."
Seems like a pretty inconspicuous and harmless statement, right? Well, except the "This is Miyamoto" part. Many people saw the wording and thought it was a parody account — Illumination made a graphic and all that, after all! But soon people realised that, uh, Miyamoto's statement did in fact come from the official Nintendo of America account, verified and all that.
Given mixed reactions to the film and the casting announcements last year, perhaps Nintendo is truly messing with us.
Or maybe some of us just wanted to say hello to the man who created Mario.
There are also suggestions that something sinister might be going on at Nintendo.
Or perhaps Miyamoto is secretly hiding a grudge because of some misguided opinions on Wind Waker when the trailer first debuted.
Many have also co-opted the statement to create some pretty hilarious memes. We think there'll be enough of these to keep us busy over the next year.
There are already plenty of existing Nintendo memes, so many have adapted these to fit the movie's delay, including one of "Miyamoto's" famous quotes.
Maybe the delay is actually because of the speeding success of Sonic the Hedgehog 2?
And Crows Crows Crows — which is bringing The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe to Switch tomorrow — has leapt at the chance to promote its upcoming release off the back of this statement.
We don't think we'll get tired of this one for a while, and it's been a moment since a new Nintendo meme has swept up a storm.

This is Miyamoto. There are a number of false Miyamotos making inaccurate statements about me and Nintendo. Please do not believe them.
I really don't know why, but the "hello miyamoto" one gave me a fit of giggles.
Also, I wish that he had started off the message by saying "This is Shigsy."
Valtteri, this is Miyamoto.
@chapu2006 No Miyamoto, no, no Miyamoto, that was SO not right!

I hate meme culture sometimes.
I stayed up past my bedtime laughing at the responses last night, good times
I thought this was going to derail like FFXIV's "This is Thancred" meme. I'm glad I was wrong
This is Miyamoto. Keep up the good work Nintendolife.
This is Miyamoto. Star Fox Zero is actually a misunderstood hidden gem. In this essay I will…

This is not Miyamoto. Sorry for any misunderstanding.
Something must be wrong with my eyes, because I read it as Chris-chan first... Glad it wasn't. 😅
Miyamoto is a treasure. ❤
This is Miyamoto.
And so is this...
This is Miyamoto, their keeping me hostage until I finish the movie, I've been trapped here for days and I really need to go to the bathroom
This is Miyamoto.
We have replaced Chris Pratt with an actual Italian. That is all.
Wow, Stanley Parable is 60FPS in native resolution? I was already going to buy it but now I’m really impressed.
it's delayed because they changed the entire cast Chris Pratt will now be the voice of all the characters in the movie not just Mario
Is this Miyamoto?
It just comes across as disrespectful to Miyamoto, to me. Why would anyone be surprised that Miyamoto is making a public announcement, via Nintendo of America's Twitter? He's worked closely with them for years, during E3 and the like.
I didn’t réalisé the Mario movie had been delayed until I read this article LOL
I thought 'Chris-san' meant Chris Pratt at first
I'm surprised they didn't pull a MP4 or BOTW2 and have a video of him against a black background with the most stern expression possible.
But yeah, the memes are great. Not much more to say really.
I don’t understand why this is a meme. It’s a pretty standard opening for a Japanese person. He likely would have opened with “Miyamoto desu” on the Japanese language tweet.
Internet is weird.
This is Miyamoto. Please understand. This is Miyamoto. (Please understand!)
@Savage_Joe Hi Miyamoto. Martinet is great but doesn't do full voice acting like Pratt will be doing. Pratt effecting an Italian accent to ape Martinet's one liners while doing full voice acting would be pretty horrid.
If Pratt doesn't sound like Martinet's one-liners, then it doesn't seem like a Mario movie.
@Mando44646 FYI, I got the joke lmfao

This is Miyamoto. We developed a new F-zero for the Switch but we will never release it. I will keep it for myself and I will never allow anyone to play it.
"This is Miyamoto."

Good! If anyone deserve it, its him!
Yo yo yo, Mario's Dad here...
hello nintendolife-san
"A delayed movie is bad
A bad movie."

That was the best one.
I’m convinced his tweets start out life in his laser printer..
@TheCrabMan I think maybe the funny bit comes more from the inherent silliness of translation in general. I went to Germany recently and visited with my sister's mother-in-law, who only speaks German. We had a few laughs along the way about the clunkiness of trying to translate phrases and exclamations that had no direct parallel. If anything this meme displays to me how silly the English language is.
@Savage_Joe I met the voice of Bowser at Retropalooza here in hometown of Pasadena, TX last Summer. That was pretty awesome.
Too funny. It's like Miyamoto hijacked an account to type that update. Either that, or it's like he's reporting in from somewhere.
I also like the disrespect toward Chris by not saying his last name-san 😂
This is Miyamoto. I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career.
I know this is off topic, but they need to release Advance wars for Switch.
@Ryu_Niiyama You're just out of the loop. It does read exactly like how a parody account would open before stating something silly or outrageous, not to mention Miyamoto in particular has been the subject of plenty of those parodies over the years. Sure, for someone reading it at face value it's just a standard introduction - but for anyone who's been 'around the block' for any amount of time, it rings familiar in other ways.
I didn't know of the meme (or even the message itself) until I saw this article, and I immediately understood why it struck people's funny bone.
@TheCrabMan you ok buddy? You seem a bit…crabby
@TheCrabMan People aren’t being racist. It’s the cute twist of humor when understood from a Western perspective. Try not to be so earnest and offended on their behalf. I’d expect they’d do the same in good-natured fun, and I’d certainly get a kick out of it were the roles reversed. It’s an honor in a way.
And I think he’s doing just fine.
@LinkSword thank you for this response, you saved me a reply (at least a less friendly one), as elitism does bother me quite a bit
@Nancyboy it’s so mad to me the comments this article seems to be getting. Over the years I’ve found the Nintendolife community has managed to make itself quite toxic and able to make an issue out of absolutely anything. You could have an article titled ‘Breath of the Wild 2 to Shadow Drop TOMORROW!!!!!’ and there would be countless comments ‘they didn’t give me time to prepare!’ and ‘what, no OoT HD remake to tide us over then?!’
Glad to have people speaking sense in these otherwise baffling comment sections
I really loved the one about Miyamoto and Chris-san being so scared of the movie they deleted it. The idea became even more funny when I thought of how Chris Pratt as Mario is what really scared them.
This is Miyamoto. Welcome back to another video.
@BoostPower That's actually Pikmin 4
This is Miyamoto?
T-I-M?
Quick, someone find this Tim and start asking him questions!
@Mando44646 exactly, theres a huge difference to voice acting a few lines and sound clips to a whole 2 hour long movie
>This is Nintendo
>Nintendo?
>This
Is
Miyamoto!!!!
XD
You do know those accounts are usually run by an intern, right? The fact it was actually somebody important using a Twitter account is worth noting.
This is Miyamoto. You are live on Channel 4. Please do not swear.
