In a surprise announcement during today's Nintendo Direct, XSEED revealed the Warriors-style beat-em-up, Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star, which released on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita earlier this year will be heading to the Switch on 25th July in North America, and 21st July in Europe.
For those unfamiliar, Fate/Extella is based on the popular Fate/Stay Night anime, which revolves around famous historical figures battling it out. That's an extremely over-simplified version of the plot, but you get the gist. This humble scribe is a big fan of the series, but we'll reserve judgment of the game for a later date.
Whether you love these types of games or not, seeing surprise announcements like this certainly bodes well for Nintendo's third-party offerings on their latest console.

Day one. Did I mention Day one?! 3rd parties are starting to show up!!!
Like the anime but not this game.
Sold!
I'm going to buy the 💩 out of this.
@Equinox Japan is getting Nights of Azure 2 as well. I may import it to show support for the switch version.
getting this,senran kagura,bayonetta amiibos,and maybe payday 2.
This bodes extremely well for future Japanese gems coming to the Switch. If we can get something like Ys Viii or Trails of Cold Steel on Switch I will die a happy man!
Im glad i waited i was waiting on a sale for vita but now i will buy it on switch
Day 1 buy for me
i'll need to look for gameplay about this.
Not super interested. Need to check this out more.
Looks great!
Is this going to be download only?
I bought Exist Archive on Vita, and I was going to buy this too but I just forgot about it lol. I buy so many games I lose track of them.
But this is convenient because now I can get the quality of the home console version plus the portability of the handheld version, both in one version, and the graphical fidelity of the home console version in the portable version...
Gosh I love Switch
Got this on the Vita. Really fun musou game with a lot of characters. Worth it if you like these type of games.
Best announcement, possibly the only one, I cared for in the Direct. Give me my Rider!
This was honestly the biggest surprise for me in the Direct.
Kinda mad I got the Vita version at launch now. Should've waited xD. Haven't finished it yet, so I may double dip and just trade in the vita version.
Very mediocre game. Incredibly repetitive.
Don't like these types of games, so personally won't be buying, but good to see Switch has different 3rd party games for those who do like these games.
It's Dynasty Warriors but in anime style. As much as I love another Musou style game, the anime arts in this game seems too mediocre for me to be excited. I'll probably check it out but not sure if I would want to buy it since Fire Emblem Warriors and Dragon Quest Heroes are just around the corner.
Not sure I'll buy this, but woo-hoo, 3rd party games are coming!
Hell yeah! Nabbing this gem up!
Keep em coming. Adding this one to my list
Wow the switch is becoming a hack and slice paradise.
Still the game looks great and seems like a lot of fun
@Yasume Like your posts
having played this on the PS4, its a formatted in a way that's shows that it was meant as a Handheld game. think the overall size on ps4 is a whopping 2.7 gigs.
the plot is a bit more... confusing than most and a tad silly, buts a fun on the go hack n slash. might pick it it up again if it runs decently
Got on Vita but likely to rebuy for big screen experience and all the DLC.
Question is with Marvellous pick up for European release?
@BrokenskullZero
I'll admit I've been tempted to watch the anime, but the plot just seems too hard to follow.
P.S. Love the Emil icon
love this type game but how durable is the joycon x button to take the punishment
Reminds me of Hyrule Warriors. Definitely getting this.
Fate/stay Night actually started as an interactive visual novel in 2004, the anime didn't come out until two years later.
I'd buy it again but I don't have a Switch yet (got it on Vita).
Seen a lot of stuff from Fate/Stay Night and had no idea what it was actually about.
@EdFairway - OH BOY, Extella does not help.
this particular one follows the /Extra stories, which after the /Zero anime (takes place in the 80's), completely just goes off its own Assassins Creed alt history animus magic matrix timeline, but with persona school and dating sim elements.
@BrokenskullZero
Tried to make sense of the timeline earlier today; mind blown, but not in the good way.
@Tsurii
Considering /zero was written by Gen "the Butcher" Urobochi, that is a given. Thanks
