Re: Ys IX: Monstrum Nox Gets A July Release On Nintendo Switch

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

Wow... another friggin July game?! Please, publishers, stagger releases more! This is nuts. Well, at least I'll have plenty to play this year. My prediction last year that the switch is on a star trek movie cycle appears to be accurate. Odd numbered years are great, even numbered years suck. Hopefully 2022 will break that trend with pokemon arceus, splatoon 3, and triangle strat.

Re: Feature: Developers Respond To The Recent Twitter Furore Over The Definition Of 'Game Dev'

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

Oh, social media platforms, will you ever not disappoint me?

Well, since we're here now I may as well weigh in on this argument. The way I see it, a game dev is a generic catch-all term for anyone working within game development. You can sub-divide these people into categories like coders, writers, artists, directors, QA testers, etc but they all fall under the umbrella of dev. The term "developer" is too nebulous of a descriptor so may as well have it apply to everyone involved in the process.

Re: Hands On: Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne Still Has The Power To Shake You Up

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

Cant wait to play this again. I don't think it will change my opinion that 4 is better, in fact I think it will only strengthen that resolve. Strangely, the limitations of the 3DS ended up working in that game's favor. The ugly muted visuals gave the game a tremendous sense of dread and despair. The game really made you feel like you were in a post apocalyptic hell scape with its dirty and bleak aesthetic.

Re: Soapbox: It's Time For Nintendo's Sonic Mania Moment

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

@Anti-Matter You've just described every single person ever. Yeah, not a single game is made for all people. Despite the popularity of mario kart and animal crossing there are plenty of people who hate them. Also niche genres and ideas are greatly appreciated by others. Astral chain is one of my favorite exclusives.

Additionally, I didn't mention you complaining about old IP, my whole post was arguing your logic that there is no new IP when there has been plenty of new IP. You literally said "I'm waiting for something completely new, not based on old IP"

Re: Soapbox: It's Time For Nintendo's Sonic Mania Moment

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

@Anti-Matter Not sure what you're even complaining about. I see this a lot, people want new IP but then when a new IP comes out they complain about not liking it. News flash, a new IP is untested and there is always a chance you may not personally like it but don't act like these new ideas don't exist.

Re: Talking Point: Capcom, Please Make Monster Hunter Snap

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

Normally I ignore photo features in games but for whatever reason I've gotten really addicted to taking photos of everything and cataloging all monsters and endemic life in MHR. Honestly, the new exploration options (wirebug and palamute) coupled with the relic treasure hunts and photo mode have made me spend a lot more time in exploration quests than I thought I would.

I can't believe it, but for once they added something to monster hunter that I enjoy as much as fighting big ass monsters!

Re: Feature: Nihon Falcom's Trails Of Cold Steel Rivals Game Of Thrones In The Worldbuilding Stakes

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

Hmm, it appears 1 and 2 are coming to switch this year in japan but licensing may prevent it from coming out in the west. As others have mentioned there is some legal red tape involving Xseed. However, if my research is correct, it appears as though xseed only owns the rights to the actual voiced dialog but not the script, if that is the case they could just have NIS publish 1 and 2 with japanese voices only and English subtitles... assuming this info is accurate.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo And The Industry Needs To Get Serious About Game Preservation

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

@AnnoyingFrenzy I was about to bring up the giga leak as well. Truth be told this is less an issue with preservation and more an issue with allowing consumers to have access to classic games (which they should and companies like nintendo need to stop being so greedy). Between rights holders' personal files, ROM sites and the public's own collections the vast majority of games are archived in some capacity. Even if a source code is lost and the game is completely reconstructed from scratch or the only surviving copy is a form of emulation based on original code it is still preservation. Not to get all "ship of theseus" but most original works of art dating back to antiquity could be argued as not genuine since most have had massive restoration efforts in order to preserve them. What matters more, the idea of the Mona Lisa or the paints originally used to create it?

Re: Soapbox: Monster Hunter Rise Is The Perfect Hybrid Game

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

Absolutely loving the game. As a long time monster hunter fan I will admit that the base game is too easy, but that will get fixed with updates as all MH games are. However, what really makes me happy with rise is that it's not ashamed to be a MH game. My biggest issue with world (despite liking it) was that they stripped the game of much of its identity to appeal to non japanese gamers. Why was there no "so tasty" after cooking, why were Palicos' roles in the game diminished, why were maps made ridiculously big other than to flex the power of the hardware and brag that it was open world without stopping to think about how annoying it would be to navigate these labyrinths after the first 100 hours when all you really want to do is fight friggin' monsters!? These may seem like minor grievances but these changes did kill the experience I had with World.

Re: Sega Tops Metacritic's 2020 Publisher Rankings, Nintendo Squeezes Into Top Ten

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

@Ralizah Thank you for pointing this out. Seems like a lot of people slept on 2019 when it was one of nintendos best years in history; not as good as 2017 but darn close.

The issue as you highlighted is that nintendo publishes a lot of games across many genres and this leaves many gamers who want your bog-standard AAA experiences feeling cold. Sony's recent strategy has been to dial in on games that hit the largest demographic possible, but for people like myself that enjoy variety its caused me to be less compelled to play my playstation.

Don't get me wrong, I still love playstation and spend a lot of time on that machine but Sony isn't exactly outputting the same kind of wacky release schedules like nintendo's summer 2019 which saw: mario maker 2, ultimate alliance 3, three houses, Astral chain and daemon ex machina; five games that couldn't be more different from one another.

Re: Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings Of Ruin Switch File Size Seemingly Revealed

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

@Silly_G What about dlc though? They fit the base game on a 32gb card but now you've set a standard for the music quality. Is nintendo gonna then make players buy a micro sd card just so that they can have all the dlc when everything is said and done after a few years? Also, I think nintendo has a policy in place that a game can't exceed 16gb for digital only buys, I doubt they want to make any first party title require buying additional storage. Imagine if the base game plus dlc ended up being 50gb, if you only buy digital thats a tall order for the switch, and I am willing to bet it would hurt sales.

Re: Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings Of Ruin Switch File Size Seemingly Revealed

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

@UltimateOtaku91 monster hunter rise will have a long string of free updates that will probably balloon that file size, I wouldn't worry. I suspect that covid plus the data breach meant they had more delays than they expected but still wanted to get the game out before the end of the fiscal year. Given the absurd length of MH games, waiting one month for more content probably won't be an issue as I don't see myself burning through over 100 hours in less than four weeks.
