Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for the week ending 25th April, revealing that Monster Hunter Rise has fallen from first place for the first time since its launch last month.
Rise's sales are understandably continuing to drop slightly week-on-week, with this week's 86,258 estimated physical sales leaving it just shy of two million in total. Those 86,000 sales weren't enough to match PS4 newcomer NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…, which debuted with a strong 108,838 physical sales.
Elsewhere, the new Atelier Mysterious Trilogy DX Premium Box also debuted in the top ten on Switch with 6,022 copies sold, and the usual Nintendo first-party suspects can be found making up the rest of the chart.
Here are the top ten (first numbers are this week's estimated sales, followed by total sales):
- [PS4] NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… (Square Enix, 04/22/21) – 108,838 (New)
- [NSW] Monster Hunter Rise (Capcom, 03/26/21) – 86,258 (1,970,371)

Switch remains on top in the hardware charts, too, with sales of the original model seeing a very decent boost this week. Here are this week's figures, followed by lifetime sales in brackets:
- Switch – 74,433 (1,581,422)

Im not surprised I think most of the series fans grabbed it on release and its not the sort of game that attracts more casual gamers.
Its only the Nintendo franchises like Mario Kart a Animal Crossing that tend to have high ongoing sales figures
Are Mario platformers not that popular
In Japan.. the 3D World sales look a bit underwhelming??
MH Rise is tracking above the MH world on PS4 (Japan only sales) not as mush as I thought. The ratio between world and PS4 was much higher I believe.
In any case this is a resounding debunk that top tier third party games cannot sell super well on switch. I’m very happy with my purchase
Switch Lite alone selling more than everything made by Sony.
Nintendo really took over Japan...
I think you are missing a digit from the Switch lifetime sales.
Don't worry, Monster Hunter Rise will rise again next week anyways. Chances are random PS4 game only had one time to shine on the top 10, after that they disappeared to the bottom.
@Shadowkiller97 Yeah no way that it's lower than Switch Lite.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi @Shadowkiller97 Switch was at 17mil in Japan last December, so it's probably really actually just missing a digit, add it to Lite to get 18mil.

And knowing how popular Monster Hunter is in Japan the physical number overall is probably meaningless as it's probably 4x that, 8mil, not 2mil. I'd be shocked if it weren't at least double, 4mil. It's 2021, and it's Japan, digital is the way to go.
Why are we even talking about physical numbers in Japan? US we still like our stuff, but even here it's probably getting closer to half. 🤷♂️
@Mr-Fuggles777 Actually, in Japan "everyone" plays Monster Hunter. It's not considered a game for hardcore players or anything like that. It'll probably keep coming back to the number one position for the next month or so.
Who put this PS4 game in my Nintendo top 10 best sellers list?!
Sony, get to the back of the line where you belong.
@Shadowkiller97 Yeah, otherwise they've sold more games than they have Switches
The regular switch has only sold 1.5 million in Japan? That seems off
Are the total lifetime sales for the Switch and Switch Lite shifted around? Last I checked, the Lite numbers were below the normal Switch model.
I still wish they had kept all the complicated things in Monster Hunter.
@Mr-Fuggles777 It’s different in Japan. Zelda doesn’t do as well there, but Monster Hunter and Pokémon bring in the big bucks, because everyone there plays them.
@NotPoliticallyCorrecc I don’t. I’ve been playing since Tri, and every change so far has only gutted the time wasting parts, while the hunts are just as solid as ever. Basically, they took a game about non-stop big boss battles, and made them more non-stop. Paint bombs were great in concept, but annoying in execution.
@-Juice- I've been playing since Freedom Unite and I love the grind TBH. Don't get me wrong though, I love a lot of the new additions.
It will be back on top next week!
Sorry monster hunter rise...... NIER REPLICANT LETS GO!!
@Lord Pokemon snap comes out this week. That will claim #1 next week, although I guarantee Rise will take second place and Nier will probably fall pretty hard given that its a niche game and Playstation games have a very bad habit of falling off a cliff after week one.
@Automated_Unit_4937 there was an error. Here is the correct sales- Switch – 74,433 (15,810,422)
@rjejr Digital sales have always been rather low in Japan. It's true that digital have become more popular in the Switch era, but I really doubt it's double the physical sales.
@abdias Specially since Sony has given up on Japan
@-Juice- I get what you're saying, but I believe some of those items brought a kind of immersion to the series. Just like you I'm a veteran since Tri (not 3U, most people think that's where I started) Paint balls were kinda annoying yeah but that's what brought immersion to the hunt. The monster "scape" so now you have to "find" it, good thing I put a tracking on it. or the use of cold/ hot drinks. It really makes it feel that you were in a snowy/ hot area. Granted, I love that you don't have to mine several times and the auto combine and no more mandatory harvest quest as an HR1
Holy crap the big N owns Japan
Incredible! So glad to see Nintendo on Top!
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Nier was highly anticipated, and the previous release did very well. It's a different audience maybe, but not so much "random" lol. I wouldn't surprised if MHRise will take top place again, due to added content. Nier doesn't have that path forward.
@abdias It's not that Sony abandoned Japan but Nintendo that pushed them out. Mario rules the japanese market with an iron fist.
@meeto_1 At least in Japan, the number 1, 3 and 6th most selling titles last week for the Switch were third party. All with around 2 million sales. That is pretty impressive.
Ah, ok everybody, the Game is officially dead.
Please, stop playing immediately!
I reccomend burning your Copy and all Devices it takes Space on.
(just joking )
Really glad to see the Mysterious trilogy crack the top ten!
A full day later and they haven't updated the Switch numbers...do they never read the comments? Honestly 🙃
Why can’t we get worldwide sales reported? Why does Nintendo only release Japanese (and UK?) sales? Some sort of law in Japan forcing them to?
@Kanbolara "Digital sales have always been rather low in Japan"
Really? I thought Japan was the land of smartphone addiction and apartments to small to put anything in, so I assumed digital, especially on a handheld like Switch, digital would be the way to go. I don't even take my Switch out of the dock and even I've bene buying a lot more digital lately, and I have plenty of space in my game room basement.
But admittedly I've never researched it, sounds like you know stuff, Google came up wanting (may need a better search query than "switch digital game sales japan"). Thanks for the info, I'll keep it in mind. But still, even if digital is the same as physical, that's still a LOT of copies not being listed. But you're right, IDK, just an assumption.
Ring Fit still rockin’ it!
@Shiro28 I’m at the very least with you there on hot and cold drinks. I was wondering why they hadn’t come up during my play though of rise yet. I just figured they were coming in new areas. That stinks.
@-Juice- I guess you were not aware when they said "no more hot drinks and cold drinks". Apparently, a good majority of people complained that the item they always forget to take with them are those drinks so they decided to removed them entirely. People complained for everything now. In MH3 I went with a party of 3 to the volcano to hunt Devil Jho and I forgot eat and to take my cold drink with me. I said screw it and power through it, I cart once and was running low on pots, max pots and herbs, I did carted once but in the end we go it. With one herb left and no pots I felt such a rewarding feeling of completion but of course I always made sure I had some ready every time before a quest.
@Shiro28 Reminds me of the recent interview where Capcom decided to make REVIII less “scary” because people found REVII “too scary”. Like, it’s a horror series, it’s meant to be like that. Casuals ruin franchises.
@-Juice- Funny you said that, because apparently now there are people who are saying RE8 is "not scary enough" and RETURNAL is scary than RE8. lol
