Following on from a series of broadcasts last month, Capcom has announced it will now air another Monster Hunter digital event next week on 27th April. It will be live-streamed on Twitch and Youtube at 11:00 pm in Japan, 3 pm in the UK, 4 pm in Europe and 7 am PT / 10 am ET in the US.
According to Gematsu, Monster Hunter Rise fans will receive information about the game's first free title update - featuring new monsters such as Chameleos, Apex Rathalos. There'll also be an update about the upcoming release, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, which is due out this July.
If you've not tried out Monster Hunter Rise yet - it's well worth a look. In our Nintendo Life review, we awarded the game nine out of ten stars and said it was one of the strongest entries in the franchise and a great entry point for newcomers.
Are you looking forward to learning more about the new content coming to Monster Hunter Rise? Will you be checking out Stories 2 on release? Leave a comment down below.

Finally, more info on the next title update, and more looks into Stories 2!
Can’t wait for updates on this game (new armor, weapons, monsters...). I’d also really, really love new biomes.
@BaronMunchausen Maps probably won't come in the title updates for Rise. If we get new maps, it'll probably be in the G rank expansion.
Master or G rank would be nice. Maybe seeing one new biome would be cool too. Would help to bring some old and new monsters to the game.
@Shade_Koopa I think G rank won't be for a while. The news we're getting will probably be for this Title update happening at the end of the month, and then when to expect the next title update.
So we should have Gamestop preloaded on our browsers searching for amiibo ahead of the event right? So all we have to do is refresh when they unlock preorders for the MH Stories 2 amiibo? Otherwise the scalpers will take all of them like they did last time…
Not really interested in the showcase now that MH Rise is out anyway.
I am more interested in the Great AA chronicles so I am not interested in Stories 2 much
Welp, time to force my friend to watch this over the phone, so if there is a release date for the update, they can see when it’s getting an update, and buy the game to get sucked into the series to, haha.
Update will probably go live that day sometime after the event concludes. Can't wait.
Can't wait for story's 2.
While I'm looking forward to hearing more about Stories 2, what I really want is to know when its amiibo will finally be up for pre-order.
As an amiibo collector, I just wanna lock them in ASAP, and roll into July, stress-free!
I'll tune in but dunno if I'll get back into it. That 20 buck day 1 dlc kinda soured my mood to play Rise more. Really don't like when they do that.
I'm ready to see more of Stories 2. Game looks a lot more engaging than the 3DS original, honestly, just based on the previous trailers, but I'd love to know if they made any improvements to the first game's battle system.
Hell yeah, definitely excited, been really wanting some news for stories 2 after loving rise. Plus I really hope they'll make it a little easier to get the amiibo for stories 2
@Yosher I kind of agree, but it was just a bunch of skins, so I just take it for what it is - a way to make money out of those people who don't care about money. Or maybe more like a t-shirt or a coffee mug that I choose to not order. Either way, as long as it's no real content, I just forget it was even there in the first place. But in principle, you're not wrong.
@Yosher I don't see why it soured your mood, since it's entirely cosmetic, and doesn't change the game in any shape or form. I didn't buy the DLC, and I'm still having a blast with the game itself. There's enough content coming in these updates and in the base game itself to be worth it.
@Yosher I've been playing since launch and I didn't even know there was any paid DLC until your comment! They really don't push it, and it really is an excellent game.
@Yosher you know you don't have to buy those cosmetics huh? Because that's what it is: that day one 20 bucks pack is just cosmetics from the deluxe collection for people who want to get it.
🤦🏾♂️
Some gameplay of MH Stories 2 would be nice. I think that game will be awesome, Capcom is on fire lately!
@Strumpan @VoidofLight @ViewtifulJotun @Renart I knew I'd get comments on that.
I know very well I could simply not buy it and that it's simply cosmetic stuff, but that's not the point. Simply the fact that this is done here is enough to put me off, at least for now. Obvious cash grabs like this simply do that to me and it's just kind of sad when otherwise wonderful games do that.
I'll probably jump back in after a little while. Maybe the broadcast next week will pull me back in!
@Yosher I still fail to see why it is a problem. It's totally optional and doesn't give you any kind of advantages in game.
And if it can make it so we get more MH games in the future, I'd gladly give them a few bucks on cosmetics.
But hey, you do you my guy
Hoping for some gameplay on stories. I am kind of interested but still need learn more as if it too much like Pokémon or Nino kuni it is not my thing
Can’t wait! Loving MHR and definitely getting MHS2
This highly looks sick.. i think alot of people will enjoy this than RISE me included, not saying that RISE is bad infact rise is superb. Just that story wise the MHS2 will keep me glued. July 9 hurry up and come.
@Bliquid exactly this.
Looking forward to more monsters to hunt in Rise and more info about Stories 2.
@Yosher Seems like a personal issue you shouldn't have brought up in the first place if you knew you wouldn't like the replies. Simply.
@Bliquid @Renart Honestly, if this stuff released at least a month after the base games, then I wouldn't have minded as much. But them releasing it like this alongside the base game does make it feel like an obvious, greedy cash grab with stuff that was stripped from the game just to sell it separately, especially since this stuff doesn't come with the already more expensive collector's edition either. Regardless of it being purely cosmetic or not, that's entirely beside the point, it's content sold separately right at launch. Like I said though, the presentation may draw me back in. We'll see.
@Preposterous Never said I minded the comments. Just said I had a feeling people would comment on my dumb opinion.
Bought the game at release, but still haven't played it. Guess I'll probably just wait for the update at this point.
@Yosher something that may help you change your perspective (and ensure you don’t miss out on something that it sounds like you’d otherwise enjoy):
All games, ‘complete’, new, old, with DLC, GotY editions, whatever flavour they come in are essentially ‘cash grabs’. Someone, at some point, is looking to make money out of your enjoyment. They have no other interest in the industry or your business beyond making money.
Acknowledging this means it’s easier to accept that games are also a business as well as a hobby/past time and (certainly for me) allows you to push past any negative opinions you have on the matter and accept that as a business stuff like this simply needs to exist.
Someone else suggested voting with your wallet (and I assume not buying the game entirely). Realistically that doesn’t mean DLC won’t be produced, it just means those games won’t get made. The danger there is that plenty of people with less ‘interest’ in the gaming industry as a whole play games that are simple short attention filling games, filled with DLC or MTX (mobile games are an obvious example). It just means that the industry shifts that way and indie devs fill the void created by AA or AAA games that get cancelled. It leads to less variety.
My advice is to just buy games you think you’ll like. You don’t need to look at the DLC program that comes with it.
Just food for thought.
@Yosher Whatever.
Here's hoping they do an about face and say, "Alright training wheels are off we're removing the easy capture shortcut blue icon and introducing the 'Capture Guru' skill(s)." That is my one above all else changes I want. I understand its a hot debate among many (especially pre-World veterans like myself) but it might as well be a monster health bar. Just encourages the 'whack it till that blue icon appears and done' approach most players I encounter online do. We're monster hunters, not monster captors (unless the situation calls for it for various reasons other than the blue icon says so).
I'm also hoping they do more with the apexes. It's a shame they're locked to the rampages. Hopefully they allow them to be hunted as a normal like the Deviants in MHGU. Also give them they're own weapons and armor sets to make it more worth while.
I also wouldn't mind if they updated the multiplayer UI menus some. Compared to MHGU its so bland. Like MHGU would be nice to see if a quest is posted and what it is, if they're already on it and if there's room to join, and especially being able to name your lobby. Also I don't understand creating a lobby then going out on a 'Join Request' quest. There's a ton of lifeless lobbies of people doing that. I wonder if they don't know you don't have to create a lobby to do that. Picking that option offline will automatically put you online to join a quest already in session.
There's more little things here and there but I'll stop at that. Overall the game is really really good and I'm enjoying it the more I play. Took me a long time to 'unplug' my brain from MHGU's depth and complexity to appreciate and enjoy what Rise is. Its a total apples to oranges between the two so understanding that I'm having a even better time with Rise
@JaxonH Do you agree to any of this?
@Ajent It's good food for thought! But it's not quite that black and white for me. I totally understand that they need to make money and all that, and I'll gladly splurge on some DLC even if I don't really need it. But it's when it becomes TOO obvious of a cash grab that I don't like it, hence why I said (in my last comment) I wouldn't have minded as much if it released like a month later, and I even would've purchased it if that were the case. But releasing 20 dollar DLC (regardless of its actual contents) on day 1 is just a little too obvious of a "hey, give us more money for this 60 dollar game" moment.
I appreciate the input though! Thanks!
@Renart Whatever? I was just explaining myself. Apologies if I came off as rude or anything, that was never my intention.
Monster Hunter: Rise is quickly becoming my favorite Switch game. I'd gladly pay $20 for a substantial expansion although that may be too much to ask this early.
To all the Monster Hunter Rise players, I’ve been on the fence about purchasing it. I just downloaded the demo today. How similar is the full game to the demo? If I enjoy the demo, will I enjoy the full game?
@MrPavoPeacock imo the game is absolutely fantastic. I didnt play the demo much. I didnt like the wire bug mechanic and found myself trying to remember too many button commands etc. Purchased the retail version day one(as i couldnt resist) and its turned out to be my favorite switch game by a country mile. Its also the only game i play online out of all my consoles. Its just a joy to play.
Chameleos and Apex Rathalos, and hopefully Tetsucabra . They eluded that there's going to be at least 3 possibly more added to Rise AND a new feature.
@Ganner I have gotten every single thing I have needed without carving so I find it isn't an issue but you can also edit your callouts, I have one that asks everyone to carve instead.
@Yosher They didn't strip anything from the game, they will release more monsters over time until the expansion and then it will begin again. They have to keep people interested somehow with all of the market saturation.
@Jokerwolf Whether they did or not doesn't matter to me, releasing it on day 1 like this for extra payment makes it look like they did and that's enough to leave a bad taste in my mouth.
@Yosher That’s actually a fair comment. I really don’t mind DLC and MTX, but as you stated when I’ve purchased it in the past it’s normally been well past launch (except for the odd occasion where I’ve bought season pass stuff at launch - but that’s normally for proven franchises that I know I’m a fan off and I’m going to want the extra content).
@Yosher It is better than having to wait an extra 2 years for a localized version of their G-Rank version game like the old ones, much rather this approach because they can take feedback on which monsters people would like to see and more interesting additions.
@Jokerwolf I hear what you're saying and I agree. I've gotten plenty of goodies I needed from the obsessive capture peeps. When I'm in the process of building something specific it actually can come in handy sometimes. What I'm getting at though is being a hardcore Classic Style player I play MH games for the thrill of the hunt NOT just for the rewards. I really love working as a team using our various styles of play to take down the beast. Any beast. You lose that feeling when everything is stalled to a screeching halt as soon as that blue icon appears as it is now. For me the rewards at the end are a bonus to the hunt not just all I want and move on (unless of course as I said I'm in the process of building/needing something specific).
In the Classic Style (unless someone had a Capture Guru setup like in MHGU) you had to work as a team and proceed with caution when intending to capture. You could whale on the beast to a certain point. As the hunt progressed you had to tread carefully and study the monster's movements etc. Sometimes you'd swear its ready for capture, go for it and it doesn't work! When that would happen it would really intensify the thrill even more. It forced you to get back at it BUT still be careful. It's even more intense when the monster goes beast mode and team member(s) faint. Sometimes you needed to use flash bombs to interrupt that beast mode. All that was part of the overall fun of what I loved about MH games.
I've stated in a previous post it all depends on how you play the game. Where you started in the series, most importantly how far you went with it and how recent . I believe that is where the big divide shows its face among all of us. As you said I've created multiple shoutouts/stickers in regards to killing it. I'd say it works about 50/50 for me (50% oblige to 50% ignore). When I'm in someone else's quest I always follow the poster's lead. I see a lot when I'm a guest in others quest(s) they all go for the capture no matter what the poster said. As I play the game more and more its become a programmed clockwork in my head that when the blue icon appears its within 10 seconds everyone backs away and traps are dropped. Coming straight from 1300 plus hours of MHGU (and HR999) its a vastly different way of "hunting". Rise is very awesome of a game no doubt but that tiny detail really gets me unlike any of my previous MH experiences.
Once again @JaxonH like from my previous post up above (#32) am I completely off the mark here? I like to run things by you because I consider you the MH Guru of all things well understood and explained better than anyone.
@Ganner Monsters always limped away when weak as long as they weren't angry buy I get what you are saying haha.
@Ganner
I agree. I can appreciate captures but it takes the fun away when it's all people ever do. That's one of many reasons why I prefer to hunt with those I know as opposed to randoms. If I play with random it's because I'm farming, in which case I probably want to cap anyways for efficiency and higher plate/gem drop rates.
So while I do agree entirely, it hasn't really been an issue for me personally.
i can't wait to hunt the monsters Capcom is gonna add in the 2.0 update.
Do what I do and stop giving people that set down traps any likes. I'm sure it'll hurt their feelings enough that they stop doing it.
@Bliquid I apologise if you believe I've wasted your time but I can't help how I feel. When I found out about it I just felt kind of.. cheated I guess and that made me not want to play anymore. I do hope the steam next weak will change that though.
And I will be honest, yes I would probably feel better about it if they lied about it and sold it better. But, y'know, only if they never actually revealed they lied about it, because.. well, we wouldn't know about it in such a case. If we would know about it then I'd probably feel worse about it.
It's also kind of the price of entry combined with it being day one DLC though. If it was like, 5 bucks altogether, then I would've just said fudge it and bought it, because what's a fiver, really.
Again sorry for wasting your time if you really feel that way, but I simply cannot help feeling the way I do. Honestly I wish I didn't feel as strongly about it myself, but that's them apples unfortunately. Please don't let my dumb opinions stop you from enjoying the game!
@Yosher I can respect that, just because this is "normal" in gaming now, it doesn't mean that we have to like it. People nowadays have accepted microtransactions as just being part of gaming but it does put a sour taste in my mouth that it even exists. We've been bso conditioned to just accept and even buy it that people look at you as if you're the odd one now. It's kinda sad really, Capcom is killing it and doesn't need the cheap dirty money that they get from DLC like that, which could really have just been included in the game since it's so minimal.
@Bliquid
I disagree. I've been playing MH a long time. 600 hrs in MH3U, 400 hrs in MH4U, 400 hrs in MH Generations, 400 hrs in MHGU, 400 hrs in MH World, and 250 hrs so far in MH Rise.
While the village Quests are easier than past games, the Hub High Rank is no different than World high rank was. The game has never been Dark Souls anyways- it's hard for new players, but for any experienced veteran, the real challenge doesn't come until end game elder dragons in G rank expansion.
That doesn't mean there's no strategy needed though. There's plenty of skill needed. And that's obvious from watching a new player triple cart to Low Rank monsters. You've just gotten so good you're in the upper echelon, but most people aren't. If you're doing naked runs, I can say for sure 99% of people aren't that good. I was almost carting to high rank Zinogre with High Rank Royal Ludroth armor with Defense +7 skill and defense are 375. And I'm definitely an above average player with 2500 hrs in the series combined.
Truth is, you've never really needed to sleep bomb monsters. It's just an efficiency tactic, and that's still true now. There's just tons of noobs that World and Rise brought in who don't know etiquette and more nuanced strategies. It's still just as viable as it ever was though.
Glad to hear you're enjoying it though. It was hell trying to convince new players to jump into the series before World. Like pulling teeth from an alligator. So nice seeing all these people finally realize the brilliance of MH, and why it's MH favorite game of all time.
@Yosher
I've been playing this series for a long time. The DLC is all stuff above and beyond what would normally be in the game, which itself us already jam packed with more content than half a dozen AAA games combined, without being broken, with actual meaningful DLC being added for free for months and months. Not just a hairstyle or face paint, but actual monsters, actual Quests- tangible, valuable content.
So honestly, they have every right to ask for more money because they're giving us a game more content rich than 99% of other games, adding to that free content that would normally cost $20+, but then on the side saying hey, if you're a big fan and you want to support us doing you right like this, with tons of free DLC that even puts CD Projekt Red to shame, here's a few trinkets you can optionally buy. You don't have to. Its not part of the game cut out. It doesn't affect gameplay. It's just a few extra poses and stuff for those who want.
I don't see how a few optional poses and hairstyles above and beyond a game chock full of content already with more free DLC on the way than some $50 expansions offer... I just don't see how that's an issue. Even if it wasn't chock full of content and didn't have nearly a dozen new monsters of free DLC coming, I still don't see the problem. But the fact the game is giving you 10x back what you're paying WITH 10 additional monsters and story endings and Quests all for free... like, they've earned the right to sell face paint on the side for the fans such as myself who are so grateful to them for such an amazing game and free content structure I'll gladly pay for the extras. Nobody else has to though. There's already TONS of them in the game by default.
@Bliquid @JaxonH
Also because this game is very easy, and the only challenge i can get is by doing multiplayer missions alone.
Naked.
I sure hope you live alone cause that's gotta be awkward for anyone else in that household JK I know what you mean.
I've come to the conclusion that Rise is definitely a different style of MH play. You're absolutely correct what you mean of strategy. I've stated in a previous article Rise has a more straightforward 'whack till its dead/time to capture' approach as opposed the Classic Style. In classic style all the hunting tools & methods made a bigger difference. Flash bombs were good to not only ground air monsters but also to interrupt any monster momentum, sleep bombing was critical to get that extra damage while you could sharpen weapons, craft things, set up a 'booby' trap nearby, etc. Hell even the timing of using range weapons to paralyze and sleep would be critical with specific monsters. For example dung bombs were important to get rid of those invading monsters because they'd just target YOU and having 2 of them after you has not a good thing.
I do agree that its somewhat unfortunate to have all these tools (old and especially new like hunting helpers) and they're hardly utilized by anyone much less needed.
As for the challenge I agree its definitely a lot lower but I find myself carting here and there. I do like that they gave the monsters more attack combos that if you get caught up in one you're minced meat in seconds. Or maybe I'm just not as good as I thought LOL. Regardless I agree it's a lot lower but I understand why they did what they did to it. I've spent the last year plus dancing with all the EX Deviants in MHGU so going into Rise really felt like a massive step down from dealing with those [email protected] Talk about sweaty controller hand situations!
@ATaco Yeah, that's pretty much it. I'm admittedly a little surprised I seem to be the only one (or at least one of very, very few) with this point of view and that people seem to think I should just accept it. I really don't mind DLC though so long as it's done right, and this simply isn't done right in my opinion.
@JaxonH I'll be honest, I've yet to play games with 50 dollar DLC I think, aside from Smash Bros, which has been well worth the money to me so far and also wasn't day 1 to make it seem like it was all stripped from the game. Although I will say I was disappointed there too that the 3rd party Mii costumes were cut from Smash 4 to Ultimate to later be sold back to us.
But overall, I'm mostly used to Nintendo's way of doing DLC, which, IMO, has been really great value for the most part. Across games like Splatoon 2, Zelda Breath of the Wild, and Mario Kart 8 (Wii U), they all had expansions for a very reasonable price at a later date to expand on the game. Mobile microtransactions aside, I don't think I can name a Nintendo game that has done obvious cash grabs like this DLC in Monster Hunter.
You can say it's just their way of giving us a way to support them, you can put it any way you want, but at the end of the day it's still stuff they put out at launch on an already fully priced game, even more if you bought the collector's edition (which I did). I do appreciate the content that is in there already but unfortunately that doesn't change my stance here.
I'm also not sure about the content that will be added because they haven't shown any of it as of yet (I don't think so anyway), but I will say that if it's anything like you say then there is a pretty good chance that they'll win me back over. And I hope they do! You're the one who convinced me to really give this game a try and I have been able to enjoy this one quite a bit until I found out about the DLC, and I am kind of sad that stupid stuff like this is ruining the game for me, so I really hope to be won back over.
All that said, I think the amiibo fiasco also plays a part. As an avid amiibo collector, not being able to get the palico and palamute amiibo is really, really annoying. Over here, they're only available through the official My Nintendo store, which needs a credit card, which I don't have, and even if I did they're no longer available on there by now, so I'll need to pay scalper prices if I want them at this point. Capcom not ensuring these are properly available like all the Nintendo ones is really stupid. Heck, even the Shovel Knight amiibo were properly available and Yacht Club Games are indies, surely Capcom could make the amiibo properly available to fans. At least, more than they have been.
@Ganner
If you're referring to the village Quests, yes, those were made easier. The dev team said that before release. And I think it was the right move. I've seen countless new players get into the series without hitting a wall too high for them to climb. From Arlo to Beatemups, even Hey Jay! (Technically he started with World but he's still new and still carting to Low Rank village monsters). It's not like Low Rank village has ever been hard anyways.
If you're referring to the older games and comparing to Hub though, I'd have to disagree. The comparison you're making sounds more like a G rank to high rank comparison. But in High Rank, you didn't really need to do any of those things. Rise is no different. In MHGU, high rank with Valor style or adept gave free evasion basically, and I'd argue was actually easier if not for the more rigid, stilted mechanics and movement. So, it had more artificial difficulty.
But ya, you didn't really need to rely on any of that stuff until you got to G rank end game. Then it mattered (kind of- you could still fight any monster without any of that stuff, which I know first hand because I rarely use any other tactics besides "bash til it stops moving"). And I suspect that will hold true for Rise when it gets the Ultimate edition, just as it did for World with the Iceborne expansion.
But I'm comparing with World, since World was the game that already deviated from the older titles and brought us into the modern age of MH. And MH World base game felt no different than Rise. Perhaps the wirefall makes it a bit easier to get out of a jam, but even then, I've wirefalled into danger as much as away from. From a monster moveset and damage perspective, I don't see much difference, if any. In fact, I'm pretty sure I never carted in World base game, whereas I'm up to 4 or 5 carts in Rise. Granted, a couple were me being careless and/or too greedy. High Rank Zinogre though... he got me good. Love that monster.
@Yosher
See, everything is technically a cash grab though. Every game by its mere existence, has the purpose of grabbing your cash. The question is, is it worth it, and are you being screwed.
Monster Hunter Rise has more content and better value than most Nintendo games, and if you compare to Zelda BotW, which had a season pass for sale day one for $20, all or nothing, this is no different. Except you don't have to wait and it's all meaningless stuff that's clearly optional anyways.
And if the game wasn't offering more value than Splatoon, Mario, Zelda, etc, ok, but it is, and on top of that it's offering free DLC (GOOD, MEATY DLC with core content, not cheap hairstyle trinkets), way more than many full price expansions.
You're getting more free DLC in MH Rise than the entire expansion pass of Zelda BotW, or Splatoon's expansion pass, or Pikmin 3's DLC. You're getting like 25% of the entire game's worth of content tacked on... free of charge. For nothing. No game offers more value and content than MH, and no game offers more free DLC than MH.
To write all that off because they added a couple optional poses and stickers on the eShop for those who so desire to partake? That doesn't strike me as rational or well thought out.
I get being against predatory DLC practices. I do. I'm with you. But MH Rise even puts most Nintendo games to shame with how much value and content it offers, and the amount of free DLC that even Nintendo would be charging for. If they were selling monsters and maps? Ya, I'd be pissed. But hairstyles and stickers? When they're already giving us a MASSIVE line of expansion content free of charge? Who cares. Not only that, but it makes me want to buy the DLC just to support them, even if I don't actually have any interest. That's how good a deal gamers are getting when they purchase MH Rise.
It's the gold standard of value and free DLC that all other games should aspire to.
@JaxonH The difference with Zelda DLC was that it was DLC planned to be released later, being developed after the main game was released, and not released right alongside the game. I'm probably dumb for accepting this more than this here in Monster Hunter but that's simply how it is.
However like I said, if it really is anything like you say where they'll put out that much free good value content, then there's a good chance they'll win me back over. And if it really IS that substantial, I may even buy said DLC I've been complaining about for the same reason you mentioned just to show my support. But said DLC hasn't even really been announced yet I think? So you only have previous entries to go off of. Which, I guess, is a good thing to go off of, but you know.
But as it stands at the moment, I'm simply still not a fan of how this is done. I likely still won't be a fan of this day 1 20 buck DLC even after the free DLC is announced but it'll feel much more fair to me then and if it really is as substantial as you say I'll be happy to fork over the 20 for extra support.
@Yosher
Sure has. They already confirmed we're getting Chameleos and Apex Rathalos and unlocked HR cap in the 2.0 update which they also just revealed they're having a Direct for on Tuesday. And leaks confirm we're also getting Teostra and Kushala Daora. And that's just the first update next week. 4 additional monsters. There was only like 34 in the main game. So that's 1/8 of the entire roster being added in for free, with another 5 coming in the 3.0 update (leaked to be Bazelgeuse, Valstrax, All Mother Narwa final boss with cutscenes and additional story ending, Apex Zinogre and Apex Diablos). That's not even counting all the event Quests they always add, which they announced before release would be permanent downloads, not timed online Quests like in World. And they've already given several item packs out, with many more to come. It's nuts. It's absolutely nuts how much free DLC we get in MH games. And you can bet on crossover content too. They always do Nintendo crossover content. Samus Aran armor set, Marth armor set, Link armor set, etc.
On the topic of "day one" DLC though, that's because it required alot of extra time to develop the expansion for Zelda. This content is just a few stickers and hairstyles and thus doesn't need months of development. They're giving us 4 new monsters for free a month after release. So a few stickers and hairstyles? Easily done on the side, ready for release day. Doesn't mean it was "cut". There's no difference between paying Person A to do it after the game is finished, or paying a different Person B to do it on the side in between the game going gold and shipping to stores. The assumption of "day one DLC = cut content" is a false presupposition. It can be, but doesn't have to be. At the end of the day it shouldn't upset anyone unless it's overwhelmingly obvious the game isn't delivering on the amount of expected content $60 should deliver, and the DLC is suspiciously significant enough most people would expect it to fill that gap and feel it should have. Neither is true in this case.
And that is why automatically equaling all day one DLC as predatory is... well, kind of irresponsible. It's easy to become jaded and just assume any game with DLC on the store day one must be screwing people, but that's actually not the case in the majority of instances. Unless it's EA or Activision, in which case it usually is. But the MH team really does set the bar for delivering value, both in the base game and in free post-release DLC.
@JaxonH Yeah I was aware that the devs previously stated about the easier Village Quests. I agree it was the right move. For me though overall I say these monsters are easier because since I've been dancing with EX Deviants for over a year right up to Rise. Of course going from those spamming 1 hit kill intense fights (and some of those quests there was NO shortcut capture allowed being in specific battle areas) to Rise will give me a different perspective than the average MH player that didn't spend lots of time with those. I do enjoy Rise's fights though. Like I said I really like they gave the monsters more combos and better targeting to the hunter because if you get caught in it you're minced meat!
You're absolutely right about the extra hunting tools/tactics were not really needed. You're right again they got more use in G Rank. However I feel like no matter what type of quest you were on (Low, High, G) you saw the tools and tactics more often since the playerbase was a lot more filled with real understanding MH players. Not this "new" World/Rise class that have invaded. I welcome them with huge open arms but they definitely play way different than what I'm used to being hardcore Classic Style gameplay.
As for the wirefall LOL yes I've wirefalled many of times right into danger many a times I actually chuckle some when it happens and save the replay. It looks so funny to get whacked, wirefall back into the beast to get whacked again and/or carted from it. I see it as a "Thank you, sir! May I have another!?" moment
@Ganner
I think you’re spot on.
Back in the day, MH hadn’t yet become popularized in the west. So the player base was mostly the diehard community. Now, we have soooo many new players that have joined with World and now again with Rise, the old guard are now the minority. And, that’s fine. The series needs to grow, and I’m incredibly happy seeing so many new players finally realizing the brilliance of Monster Hunter. They’ll get there eventually. We just have to guide and mentor them.
And yes! Cant tell you how many times I wirefalled into a monster, got rejected, then wirefalled toward them again only to get swatted down again. Like, come on... for real?! Twice in a row?! Now I’m laying there stunned like an idiot lol... Gotta learn to stop being greedy and wirefall away from the monster.
Okay so
@Yosher
I know games these days can indeed be predatory and we must be careful to guard against that and not let companies get the better of us monetarily. I do appreciate people like you being on guard about this.
In my opinion though, I don't think this is very predatory. I've taken no more than a few minutes to look at the paid cosmetics and say "meh, not interested for now" and go on to complete 250+ hours of the game and counting. Them coming out with this on day one is a bit interesting, to your credit though, but (and here's where I disagree with you the most) I personally don't understand how this could sour a whole entire game for you. To me it's like going to the grand opening of an amusement park and being turned off by the fact that they sell souvenirs on day one. I'd be there just for the rides. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but that's how I'm reading this and I'm sure you feel the way you feel for a reason. I am glad you decided to share your opinion though.
@JaxonH for the most part I agree with what you're talking about, but one thing I do want to point out (to Yosher's credit, probably) is that since the game was announced in the Nintendo direct back last year, in that announcement trailer we had been informed on the deluxe edition and what was in it, and I assume they were still working on the game by this time, so this was probably pre-planned to have this sold alongside the game.
@treechenho Honestly, a lot of my dislike towards this is because Capcom has been notorious for doing on disc DLC. I don't know if they still do that but this practice here, I feel, really harkens back to that, which is why I'm so against it, and which is why it mostly sours my mood for the game so much. It really feels like a slap in the face to me.
Which is also why if the game really will receive all that free content like JaxonH is saying, I'll feel much better about it. Because the game really already has quite a lot of content and them adding more of that for free can certainly be applauded and I'd be happy to support that and pick up the game again, even if this day 1 DLC will remain rather disrespectful in my eyes, especially when combined with the price just for a couple of cosmetics. Each one loose isn't that big a deal but altogether it's really expensive for what's on offer.
I'll wait and see for now though on how I feel after the upcoming presentation. Thanks for the respectful comment though, I appreciate that! People could learn from you.
Can't wait for this. Really enjoying MHR. Just one question, I did almost everything and now I'm stuck at HR7, I don't even have HR quests yet in the village but I already beat the two elder dragons multiple times and saw most likely all the story cutscenes. Is that it so far? What else to do until the update?
@xxx128 I played the demo and didn’t like it - the game was too clunky for me. The controls felt off and strange, and even when using different weapons it still didn’t feel fun. Does the full game play similar to the demo?
@MrPavoPeacock the demo is like throwing u straight away to intermediate mobs u wont even meet til 5 hours into the game at least. And its not clunky, u are just not accustomed to the control yet. U can check the YouTube to see lots of crazy moves the MH community are capable of. My advice is, try it. U wont regret it. The actual game actually ease u up before starting to give u harder mission
@Scollurio farming mats for decos and talismans, crafting armor and weapons u like, do arena mission, or just take a break and wait for the update (27th)
@LeonAlistair Yeah I've figured that much about the crafting and farming. I'm alternating between bow and hammer setups, loving both playstyles. So it's really capped at HR 7 so far?
Weird because for newcomers it really seems like the game just stops. Yes sure I saw the credits roll and all (way too early, way too easy imho), but yeah.
Oh well then, I'm curious what the 27th will bring (besides a few new monsters). I'd love some sort of custom arena challenges with scaling rewards. Imagine playing in the arena with 5 monsters and all of them going onto each other's throats too. I'd even take some kind of "wyvern race", just imagine Mario Kart but with people riding monsters instead, haha.
@Yosher Are you completely new to the MH series? If so I can kind of appreciate why the day 1 paid dlc would leave a sour taste for you... But...
notice how not a single person commenting here, all of whom are clearly mh series veterans, has a problem with it? That's because they all know that we will be getting TONS of content added throughout the year. (First free update already confirmed for the end of this month, with a bunch of monsters added) And even if there weren't free updates, you can easily get hundreds of hours of enjoyment out of just the base game alone.
Listen to what everyone is telling you. MH games are easily the best value for money by far because of the endless replay value and the insane amount of content.
Why not just buy the physical game and see for yourself? If you really can't get into it, you can just resell it. If you enjoy it, you could spend hundreds if not thousands of hours on it. Trust me
@teko I already do have it! I already spent several hours on it and had a great time with it! And yes it is technically my first Monster Hunter game (I did try a few in the past but couldn't really get into them, falling out quickly in the beginning).
Unfortunately I can't help the way I feel about these kinds of things, though. It feels unfair. As already stated in my last comment, it harkens back to those moments Capcom did on disc DLC and that was definitely quite a scummy practice, this really reminds me of that. It's also available day 1, it's probably just not on the cart.
However like I also already said a few times before, if it really does roll out such grand free updates, then I'll likely be jumping back in after all and even buy the DLC I've been complaining about to show my support. Which, I guess if I'm to believe the people here is very likely to happen then.
@Yosher Well, in that case I don't really see what you have to lose by playing it, or what you have to gain by not playing it.
I do get where you're coming from. I can't stand obnoxious predatory practices in games, like loot boxes/microtransactions. I was actually annoyed too when I first saw that there was paid dlc day 1 for Rise. I was worried that all the content updates that had always been free in previous MH games would now be paid. Then I found out that the day 1 dlc is purely cosmetic, has zero effect on gameplay and they confirmed free dlc coming. My fears were completely laid to rest.
I hope you do come around and can get into the game. A lot of people consider MH the best action games because of the depth in the combat mechanics. Rise is probably the most accessible entry point for newcomers.
@teko Well, I think what I should really have been saying was more that my mood to play the game has just dropped a lot because of it and I felt more like playing other games instead, and that if this free DLC will really be as grand as people say then the mood to play MH again will probably rise again. Pun totally intended.
