Update [Thu 8th Apr, 2021 00:30 BST]: Nintendo has finally released a translated version of this video. Here it is!
Original article [Thu 25th Mar, 2021 02:00 GMT]: To remind fans Miitopia for Switch is a thing, Nintendo's Japanese YouTube channel has released a brand new video that runs for more than five minutes. Although there are no subtitles, it's still worth viewing for the footage alone.
Miitopia, in case you forgot, will return on 21st May, and pre-orders are now available on the Switch eShop. This new version will feature "expanded customisation" as shown in the above clip, and horses - to lend a hoof in battle.
It appears the company behind this port is Grezzo - best known for its work on The Legend of Zelda remakes.
If we spot an English version of the above trailer, we'll be sure to let you know. Will you be adding this one to your collection when it arrives? Tell us down below.

This game looks ridiculous....
And I mean that in the best way possible.
I was terribly sad to miss out on this game, as I sold my 3DS to get my switch. Totally stoked that this is coming to Switch!
There is a date ?? 😲
With same gender Mii ?? 😀
Btw, how could they have a time to go to cinema when they have a serious duty to defeat Dark Lord ?? 😆
Also, the Mii make up feature was great.
I can make my Planetary Xaviors team more accurate with my actual character design. 😀
Honestly, the Makeup feature really makes them not look like Mii's anymore, and I'm eh on it, but it's still pretty cool that this remaster adds a bit more to it. I'm hoping for a few more post-game areas honestly. Also yes, I said "remaster" instead of port, since this is a remaster. The game has higher quality textures as well as better lighting.
In all honesty, I haven't seen anything that makes me want to get this over just...opening my 3DS and playing the copy I got on a birthday sale forever ago. Fun game, but not enough to pay 60 for when I already own it. cough Link's Awakening cough
@YinYangYoshi This is actually 50, not 60.
I’m just happy to see Nintendo acknowledge Mii’s again.
@E_Gadds_Garage I'm hoping this sells well so we could get a third tomodachi collection game.
Yeah but is it NINJA APPROVED???
The extra customization looks really nice, but besides that (and the horse) I don't see much added content over the original. I haven't finished mine on the 3DS yet.
Then again, I believe this is part of a plan to make Miis relevant again
That trailer music kinda sounds like the Wind Waker title screen haha nice.
Miitopia news is always great!
We need to encourage more wacky, eccentric Japanese games like this, Muscle March, Captain Rainbow, Samurai Pizza Cats etc. to continue to be made and come west.
i do like a lot of the new features coming to this game. can't wait to pick it up!
really enjoy the 3DS Version of the game!
This is just looking better and better. I absolutely loved it on 3DS and it looks even better here. The only downside is the lack of system-side Mii integration, but I've already got around 90 Miis transferred to my Switch and the online Mii sharing gallery is sure to be full of great designs.
Physical release? The game looks fun and charming!
@PBandSmelly
From a purely scientific vantage:
Pouring over the uncertainty and quantifiable errors in the experimental build, day and night reviewing the literature and including any archaic formalisms even if it means hand sourcing journals before 1946, weighing the need for data driven computation given stochastics and noise, sharpening every measure of the hypothesis, I’ve analyzed the data, used proprietary statistical regression methods so there is nothing left to chance. And... and ... and..
We ask together, we as united as those who may or may not have dreams of leaving our life as a stuffy Science Girl (why else play RPGs?) and becoming science Girl- the shinobi apprentice, dancer of the wind song...
So, OF COURSE, is it ninja approved?
That is the only question!
That cover photo do b having anime waifu mii
this makes me crave tomodachi on switch even more.
@bluetofu Same. I just hope they don't port life over and call it a day. If Miitopia succeeds, I hope collection 3 gets released, with more dreams and more new features as well.
When I played it on 3DS, Vladimir Lenin and Kim Kardashian ended up best of friends.
@PBandSmelly I'm afraid not, please don't kill me. It's not my cup of tea!
@BloodNinja
NINJA HATH SPOKEN
@PBandSmelly HAHAHAH
No no, if people are into this, it’s all good. I hope they enjoy it.
Still makes me question humanity, but hey!
NINJA APPROVED
Does anyone know how many Miis are featured in the game? I mean, how many Miis you have to create to fill all the roles.
Can you create all of them or will some of them be automatically created by the game if you can’t be bothered to design them all?
@PBandSmelly
~~~Nice!~~~ In your honor I’m having a PB and... oh umm...
@BloodNinja
Like you could fall at the hands of these...
And, surprised - I’d have thought if you’d question humanity it would be when you got grief for daring to not buy that game and subsequently lectured on financials. Don’t tell them I didn’t buy a switch. They might bulldoze my lab. Oh wait ive been overworking so... hm.
Similarly- hard to spend on this~~ the girl I watch sometimes likes to play “Wii-dolls“ together (aka mii maker) I think we logged 10 hrs on that RPG- better dialogue too.
Still dont understand what this game is about ? Talking to mii cpus in a town, make cpu friends and go on Adventure fighting som battles with mii cpus to earn some rewards ?
@echoplex
Oh no!
In a surprise bad turn for the port it’s going to be like that new paper Mario game where all the NPCs are the same Toad.
My son and I loved Miitopia.
Mii Maker on the Wii U (more detailed than the Wii one) was my most played app of all time so far. I collected dozens upon dozens upon dozens of Miis either by making them or using the QR codes (getting them off the internet). Loved how they popped up as NPCs on your runs in Wii Fit U.
Shame the Mii usage has been diminished down for Switch in general.
I’m hyped to play this gem again. I was getting the itch to play it, and then they announced a switch version, yay, I’m totally getting that!
@DennisNOR It’s a jrpg with a proper storyline. The party members act on their own, except your own mii.
@DennisNOR
I have played Miitopia until finished, basically Miitopia = Quirky RPG game where Miitopia island got terrorized by Dark Lord who stole Mii faces. You played as a hero to save the world from Dark Lord. As you continue your journey, you will meet with other Miis that you created by yourself. There was a story behind the malicious nature from Dark Lord, you will figure it out at the end of story.
I said Quirky RPG because your Mii relationship can support the battle or even ruin the battle (very unlikely happen).
Your Mii personality will determine their habits in battle. Cool Mii will easily avoid attack, Cautious Mii will take another turn to charge their skill into more damage / potential, Airheaded Mii can distract foes to not attack your team, etc.
You can fed your Mii with grubs from battle and their personality will determine what grubs they like and dislike. The grubs will boost specific parameter permanently. If your Mii like, it will gain more point, but if they don't like, it will lost a few points after boosted.
Better you try Miitopia.
You will never see Quirky RPG game like this.
I loved the repetitive relaxing RPG loop of Miitopia on the 3DS but I’m not paying again unless there’s substantial new content which it doesn’t look like there. Mii customisation and a horse is pretty lazy. Miitopia 2 is what would’ve got me to hand over my hard earned $
Can't wait to gaze upon those sexy Twerkeys again...
in HD!
@BloodNinja HA. He said it 😁
It's such a bummer to me that the best games mechanically are always so tongue in cheek. But eh, better than nothing.
This game finally gets the chance it deserves. EDIT: I'm officaliy coining the term "AniMii".
@Dr_G_Lemaitre I haven’t heard of Wii dolls, but even watching this 5 minute thing left me with more questions than answers!
I certainly time for Mii's get upgraded, lets drag that BOTW NPc engine over, or at least let games use it.
@bluetofu same, I miss Tomodachi so much! I'd love a full sequel with a couple new features.
@BloodNinja
~It is called mii maker right?~
The make-your-mii-app... that app was called “Wii-dolls” by the kid I mentioned.
If she saw that a mii could have all sorts of clothes and a Japanese monologue while adjusting eyebrows and doing its hair, goodbye barbies forever... and there’s your customer base! Oh wait, is that even more questions ?
Hmm. Maybe I should put non-dubbed anime on in the background when I’m doing my hair and adjusting my eyebrows...
@Daniel36
Interesting comment! ~could you expand on what stands out about it mechanically or the features you liked?
Even if it's just the same game but with extra customization, I'm planning on getting it. The original was a really fun time and the updated graphics look excellent!
I sold my copy of Miitopia on 3DS.
and preordered it for Switch.
@Dr_G_Lemaitre Hahaha yeah I didn’t own a Wii or a Wii U so I think the Mii games were on that, right? No clue.
@Dr_G_Lemaitre Do you mean with Miitopia specifically?
I think it's the way their interpersonal connections work. Also, combat wise, it isn't too complicated, and usually only over the top in a comical sense, not a mechanical one.
I guess I just have a very specific taste that unfortunately isn't catered to at all in the current gaming landscape.
Another port......
@Daniel36
Thanks- interesting parallel, even that final fantasy game on SNES has some silly bits and the series is know for popularizing elegant mechanics.
If you like elegant combat mechanics and this Miitopia looks good, there was a 3DS street pass mini game “monster manor” I’d recommend chec’in a let’s play vid of or even DL-ing it if you have a second system etc to feed passes.
@BloodNinja
Yes, mostly. 3ds too though.
Notably the street pass mini games and that tomodachi (“sims”). The mii people are in smash even on switch. Maybe? So maybe it’s like Nintendo couldn’t decide if they should ditch miis for new stuff or support the idea ~~~ like Konami with that vania-like game after we all thought cv was on the ~100yr Dracula cycle..
...oh how rude of me! I get it~~~Did you want to come over and play Wii Dolls with me? There’s a fab ninja star game too and I play it thinking of you and our crime fighting exploits or whatev... err I mean...wow look at the time. Gotta go BC Science is. The maths. What?
@Dr_G_Lemaitre
Hopefully, Tomodachi Life will get the HD treatment too.
This game looks fun and I can't wait to pick it up.
@BloodNinja The Mii shogun is sending his elite assassins as we speak.
Do your customizations carry over to other games? I'd like to look snazzy for when Mario Golf comes out.
Rewatching this just for the English version. Still super hyped for this game.
@Northwind You've absolutely nailed it. Add to that, the fact the online on Switch costs when you can still share Miis on 3DS for free, and why would anyone get this over the original?
Glad to see they're actually adding more new content other than the enhanced visuals (Which look stunning, might I add!). Haven't been legitimately "hyped" for a game in a while, and this is one I've already spent a lot of time with. If you missed out on the 3DS version, absolutely get this.
@Chowdaire LOL
Oh! It looks like they added something else new besides the horse and extended mii customization. Now the characters can go on outings. I might just end up double dipping on this game after all. I'm still hoping for a new Tomodachi game more though.
I'm looking forward to this one - passed up on it back on 3DS, but it looks like it'll be a fun little time. The port's looking nice too, looks like they put a bit more work in than just up-ressing the 3ds version
Sold! Can't wait to go on an epic adventure to stop Dark Lord Bobby Kotick from stealing everyones faces and jobs.
Any chance Miitopia will be featured in Smash Bros now?
And so, the 3DS ports begin. It had to hapen sooner or later... but it's too sad...
Ah, Miitopia! One of those games that is both really stupid and really fun all at once. Definitely looking forward to seeing this again on the Switch.
